    I'm 100% reliant on the pomodoro technique to get anything done, and my top tip for when you're having trouble getting started is to *start* with the 5-minute break. It can be easy to endlessly put off starting that first 25-minute timer, but if you set the *five* minute timer you still get to chill for another five minutes, so there's less of a hurdle ... and then you get a cue to start the 25-minute one as soon as it finishes.

    • @quickdudley
      @quickdudley 10 месяцев назад +38

      Definitely going to try this! My own trick is that I use the first 25 minute timer of the day to figure out roughly what each of the other ones will be for (which involves checking email, notes from the previous day, etc)

    I love this. I actually was directed to an app while I was in college (at age 40). The app is called forest. You set a timer for X min and set how long your breaks are. When you start the timer it plants a virtual tree. You get an alert when the time is up and break time starts, as well as when break time is over and it's time to get back to work. As long as you stay on task your tree grows. If you get distracted early and start texting or checking media, your tree dies. It helped knowing I had a break coming soon that I could let my mind wander and then I could come back and feel more focused.

    Love the pomodoro. I combine it with my bullet journal. I draw in an outline of a tomato when I’m setting up the task. Then I fill in how much time it actually takes. If it takes longer, I note it and then mark my (usually really) misjudged time. I also mark any particular enemies or impediments, like forgetting a part of the process. It’s really helping for me to connect realistically time to task because usually I forget some of the associated tasks.

      i know this comment is kind of old, but for me this problem is a mental framing problem. When you have lots of tasks to do and you can't decide which one to start, then your actual real first official task is "Decide What To Do Next". it even helps to set a timer for it and everything, even if the decision-making only takes about 10 seconds!

    • @Tonisuperfly
      @Tonisuperfly 4 года назад +55

      Raidell I totally get how that might help you. For me, decisions are really, really hard, even tiny ones. I can tell myself I have to make a decision in a timeframe but I still won’t do it. Believe me, I’ve tried!

  • @sudeshna2983

    My major issue with procrastination is that I don’t know how to choose the task or how to actually do the task. If things don’t go perfect, I panic and leave.
    Most of the times I’m just so overwhelmed that I don’t start at all. I just can’t make myself do it. It’s really hard.

    • @toris5605
      @toris5605 2 года назад +218

      a little fast talking,
      small eye-catching jumps in or out on the video - to pull focus back if you were pulling away.

    Because I constantly underestimate how much time everything will take (on my gravestone, directly under my name and birth and death dates, will be the legend "That took longer than I expected"), I've started timing myself doing everyday tasks, from brushing and flossing to taking a shower to getting dressed to making the bed. I now know that no, I can't actually get dressed in five minutes. Armed with this knowledge, I'm much more likely to arrive at appointments and such on time because I can set reasonable, experience-based goals for preparation and transit times.

    Ma'am you are so sweet. That was a really calm and helpful video.
    I had always struggled with symptoms of ADHD. No one seems to understand this.
    I've always had problem in reaching anywhere on time, even to this very day.
    I often have problem in starting things, even if I know how to do it.
    (Example- I can do a front roll but when I have to do it, I just can't. But if I just try doing it one time, then there's no stopping me. I can try over and over. Same goes with pull-ups, studying or doing any other task/activity)
    I am in first year of college. I often struggle to explain to my friends why I need continuous slots of 3 to 6 hours to study but they do not seem to understand it. They just think I'm simply procrastinating and not even trying. I literally have different voices in my head telling me to do this or that. My thoughts seldom come to a stop. It feels like my brain is working overtime.
    If I say to someone that maybe I have adhd, they say "everybody has it nowadays".
    My condition and habits are worsened by the use of mobile phone, specially social media.
    I just want to do things normally and build discipline. I will start taking pomodoro technique seriously because it has worked for me when I tried it a year ago. And thanks for putting out these helpful videos.

    My own solution, at least for school work is to do everything at school. I stay late in the media center, work during lunch, and sometimes during a boring bit of class. This is the first time i feel like I'm being heard. 😢.. I have wonderful people in my life, i used to be a topper in school, but now im such a mess.. because of my school records, everyone have high expectations from me. But deep down i know, i cant achieve anything, because i plan things, it takes 4 to 5 days to start something, then i hyper focus on that day. Then after 5 or 10 days i get back on that project. I procrastinate more if i get more time. I feel like i can do this easily and actually took days to complete the task. Simpler tasks like washing clothes etc are getting procrastinated, i dont know i mindlessly wander in some world. I thought phone was my problem, but even without phone it was still the same. I start something, i do it religiously for some time then i quit it. You have to see my journal, to know how many routines i have created to suit myself. But i didn't even last for a month. I tried pomodoro app and ended up switching it off.. i think im hopeless😢😢

    Omg, I can't believe there is someone like me 😭😭😭, finally I don't have to feel lonely. I am always depressed because of this brain that led me not wanting to live anymore. It continued for my whole life while being pressurized with high expectations to perform, which led me to be successful. Well, I was terrified of getting punished and letting people down, so I had to. The fact I always hid from people was that I was only functioning under crisis/pressure/anxiety. I was never ever able to perform during the rest of the time. Most of the time ( actually almost all the time), I was just trying to hide my procrastination/anxiety and lack of focus instead of actually working. Because of this "death trap" ( at least thats how I feel) I am pretty sure I only know how to unhappy. I don't know how to feel good. Fortunately, I have been trying really hard lately to spend my time feeling good by allowing myself to find the goodness in moments and simply learn to enjoy small stuff. The only problem I have is that I still can't get things done which is who I am. But, I am kind of happy that I am learning not to hate myself for not getting things done. This makes my life much better and gives me small little hopes to I can keep progressing on actually doing the work. Fingers x-ed

    I really like your channel, it started giving me some clue about my brain, and I started a formal assessment of Autism/ADHD and this is in part thanks to you. Now I don't necessary agree that the Pomodoro technique will work for everything. Professionally I work with computers a lot (I'm a data scientist) and part of my job is to write computer code, for anything non-trivial the Pomodoro technique goes again productivity, because (in general) to do good coding you need to get into the flow and that takes time, and then you don't want to interrupt the flow because then by the time you get at the end of the day you have hardly done anything. In my case there is a double whammy because I not only spend time coding but I spend time analyzing data which involves exploration, discovery, and often making hypothesis and testing them, again for anything non-trivial being in the flow makes me very productive. But them I have a triple whammy: I suspect having autism and ADHD so by the time I get out of the flow it might be past midnight, useful to have hyper focus as a super power but obviously you know the draw back... So what's your advice, is there any alternative to the Pomodoro technique that would fit better the type of work I do?

      Hi there, i am experimenting with Pomodoro myself lately and discovered, that a 25/5 rhythm not always fits best for me. Depending on the tasktyp and my energylevel of the day, other rhythms help better. 50/10, 50/5, 25/3. I've never tried stuff like 120/10 or even longer pomodoros. Have you?

  • @bluesdealer
    @bluesdealer 7 лет назад +44

    Adult ADD'er here and why am I just now finding this channel?! I started using pomodoro intervals about a month ago and they have been transformative. The hardest part is being a taskmaster with yourself and sticking to the "no distraction" rule without compromise, but the 5 minute "light at the end of the tunnel" makes this less excruciating. The frequent 5 minute breaks also help prevent hyperfocusing on just one component of a project (i.e., me every time I do a project!) because they force you to "surface for air" and reflect from a higher perspective on the entire work.
    Thanks for the video - you just gained another subscriber! :)

      Think that's bad, I was absolutely tripping on the orange coloring at the corners of her mouth through the whole beginning. I thought there was something wrong with the color of the video.... then she took the bite of pizza and all was explained. Tomato sauce doesn't wipe off of makeup as cleanly as it does bare skin. lol

    I was using pomodoro sessions before I was diagnosed with adhd in 2019. They always helped me out and now I see why!
    Lately I've been struggling with my tasks and such and getting things done. I've been putting myself under a lot of stress. But I'm going to trying using pomodoro sessions again and see if that solves it!
    Thank you so much! Much love

    I VERY RARELY, and I mean almost NEVER, post comments to ANY videos from ANYONE. Now, with that being said, the fact that I'm posting a comment on your video right now shows just how INCREDIBLY MUCH I LOVE AND SINCERELY APPRECIATE YOU, and NOT AT ALL in ANY type of creepy way whatsoever! I've watched MANY of your videos, and I TRULY LOVE THEM ALL!! I have to say, I've searched and searched for videos and articles that could help me in making positive changes to how I do things while navigating through life, but I never could find anything for ME that could help ME... At least, that was until I found YOU and YOUR VIDEOS! Idk of ANYONE else who is posting videos like the ones you make and post. What I mean by that is your videos hit SO DAMN CLOSE TO HOME that we're like roommates now... Again, NOT in a creepy way AT ALL! Lol Anyway, Idk if you'll ever even see this comment or not, but if you do and are willing to, I would TRULY LOVE AND APPRECIATE IT if I could have a one on one conversation with you sometime, whether that be over the phone or just messaging back and forth privately on RUclips! Either way, I just ABSOLUTELY NEEDED to tell YOU how INCREDIBLY AMAZING you and your videos are! I SINCERELY HOPE I end up randomly getting a private message from you sometime, but I DO understand COMPLETELY if that never happens! I would apologize for the long-winded comment, but something tells me that you TOTALLY UNDERSTAND and don't need an apology from me for it! Lol I'm done adding to this comment now! Lol God Bless you for ALL you're trying to accomplish/do with these videos, and I hope to see MANY MORE in the future!!

    I don't like the timer. tried it. not a fan. but, I like to listen to listen to music - it drowns out noise distractions and seems to keep me energized.
    enter the smart Playlist.
    I made a smart Playlist that runs for 30 minutes and then stops...
    5 minute break!
    to wit: if using a timer doesn't work for you, for whatever reason, you might try a set length Playlist that cyles in new music (so it doesn't become repetitive) to meet the same goal. I started using this as a coping strategy for studying before I was diagnosed.

      Music works for me too, but only with headphones that are also noise canceling. It's like I'm magically in a bubble that gets rid of outside distraction and the music helps minimize the noise in my own head.

    • @KevinS265
      @KevinS265 4 года назад

      @@PokeyStix Long time Pomodoro and Pandora user. Pandora premium to get rid of the ads since that would defeat the purpose. I like their product because I choose a song or group and it builds the playlist with similar songs. Also, the song list changes over time so it isn't always the same songs. It took a bit to create the right "channels", but I now have three that I use exclusively for working. They have minimal lyrics (or none), one is "peppy" but not intrusive with the others being softer styles. These two apps have been the near-perfect mix for me for years. Hope this helps! [I am not paid by, nor affiliated with either product].

    That is hitting the nail on the head in terms of why I used to start projects late I ended up getting to be on it realize it wasn't so hard and I should have started sooner but once I started I really had trouble stopping cuz I was so focused on it that's why I didn't want to start sooner in the first place. Quite right.
