At 2:27 he checks the height of the ceiling beam. In the end, he intentionally sticks his sword in the ceiling and tricks the twilight samurai into killing him, as revenge for taking him lightly, as he knows the twilight samurai never wanted to kill in the first place.

You're the only one besides me to notice that. He wanted Seibei to kill him, in a seemingly honorable way. It was calculated. He wanted a way out of his miserable existence. What better way to die, than by the sword of a good honest man like Seibei? I think most Japanese, like myself, intuitively understand this. Based on other comments, I'm surprised how so many non-japanese viewer don't get that. The only part you got wrong, was that he let Seibei kill him as a revenge. Yogo may be insane, but he's not evil. For him, being put out of misery by a good natured (and skilled) swordsman like Seibei is a salvation.
Just so you know, the guy was offended that sebei was going to fight him with a short sword because, at that time, anybody could carry a short sword; you didn't have to be a samurai to have one, whereas the long sword was for samurai only.
Ahh I see. That explains why he was so offended and was prideful. Sebei even offered him to escape while they were fighting but the villain pride got in the way and wanted to conintue to cut down Sebei. I think it's still an even match since the villain barely ate anything, look like he hadn't slept, and was starting to get tunnel vision.
He sold the long sword to fund her wife funeral. Do you see when her younger daughter carry the long sword effortlessly? Because it was made of stick, not a real one. Only the scabbard is real.
Apparently he was a professional/traditional dancer in Japan, and the death scene that immediately follows is an incredible example of physical acting. Having that kind of background with an expanded motion vocabulary seems to really elevate the storytelling .
This is the best samurai sword fight I've ever seen. Very realistic except for the bleeding. People usually bleed more but I would expect they lessened it for the ratings. Also, I don't hear the music in this clip. I remmeber a very soft and low key shakuhachi soundtrack during this fight in the movie.
Yea this is one of the most realistic samurai movie out there. About the music, I never recall hearing it when I watch it for the first time and also when I bought it on blue ray disc, never heard it either.
@@carlosluismendez7392 Harakiri is awesome just watched it few months ago it’s a masterpiece. Haven’t seen Sword of Doom but I will definitely add it to my watch list ;)
It could be one of the best. That's because it is more realistic than the much more common one.s where the opponent is quickly and cleanly vanquished, the victor not bothering to wipe his sword . In truth, it was more likely a struggle of mutual wounding
2:27 he looked up and saw the low ceiling beam which would block his strike and he took a step forward to avoid it. Always mind your surroundings, what great detail!!!
I don't think the scene where he hit the ceiling was intentional or a mistake. Even if you witness that scene, you cannot see people's hearts. There is no way to know what that man was thinking when he hit the ceiling. Especially if he dies. I think this scene expresses that impermanence and reality.

Couldn't it been by accident? The guy hadn't slept or ate for many days and he was getting tunnel vision as well.
I think your are wrong. He forgets about it because he had the upper hand.
It's a brilliant fight scene.
@@digitaljimmy123 He lost because of his ego. The information is already there, you don't have to speculate about it.

I like Fighting scenes like this: little to no Camera Cuts, no shaking camera or Blur, and constant Fighting using fairly realístic moves
unlike chinese swordsmanship lots of flying and body contortion. .
Most realistic cinema sword play...

seibei was also recruited because indoors a katana will get stuck in beams and the like, whereas a short sword is more manageable.
Yeah, although for a short sword, Sebei's is slightly shorter than the average one.

Its similar to nowadays where civilians can Walk with a Handgun(Revolver/Pistol) but not with a .50 cal
The katana guy should have known better than to pick a fight with Scorpion.
Great film.
He don't want to be doshonored and be ronin again, when family have died, that's why he loose. Seibei was just perfect enemy.
Exactly! So many other viewers don't get that. Good on ya!

Yes very realistic.

I came from shogos video. After watching this I got to see the movie, i was at the edge of my seat, great action scene!

There is a soft music at the end

It's there the music..
And the incessant buzzing of the flies on the corpse outside.
This is precisely what the Wakizashi was designed for: close quarter combat in confined spaces.
i remember stumbling across this movie by mistake many years ago... was such a great film! it needs to be remastered!
I agree. If there is ever a remaster version, I would watch/buy in a heart beat.
This movie is already perfect as it is.
4:19 and it was at this moment he knew he f##### up
Yup... It happened so fast.
Great movie since Ghost of Tsushima I can’t get enough of Samurai movies.
This one is one of my favourites together with Ran and Seven Samurai.
That is awesome, glad you found this video :) Ghost of Tsushima is such an awesome game and Seven samurai is like the king of all samurai movies.
I recommend Harakiri and Sword of Doom.

not long before that he had been keeping aware of the ceiling so its weird that he didnt notice this last time
He was lacking energy from sleep. I think the fight until the end exhausted him that he was starting to get tunnel vision.

That stopped his farting in church...
