The ending is the best. An old forgotten graveyard. None of this mattered in the end
Spot on mate.
Love this take
@CougarClan In gang warfare it never does. Once the last person who remembers the battle dies. It is almost like it never happened.
It did matter. It mattered to them. Just because history forgets doesn’t mean it’s all pointless.
@arthur5dent Allow me to clarify. The battles will always matter to the gangs in question. Although for the irish this was primarily a matter of self defense. In real life the so called Natives were notorious for assaulting irish immigrants. Even as they were getting off the boats. The real Bill Cunning was very racist and confrontational. Fast forward to the present and gangs in the U.S. are fighting either for control of the local illegal drug trade. Or for territory which they frankly do not own. So it is what it is.

I love this movie. Absolutely adore it. I only noticed watching this time that the Butcher throws a rando at Priest Vallon to distract him and then stabs him under the arm. All his talk of honor and nobility and he defeats his greatest adversary with a cheap trick. LAYERS, I TELL YOU.
Ehhh, i mean if were gonna call that a dirty or cheap trick then ya gotta call everyone fighting dirty, not like its a 1 on 1 compeition, these dudes came to rumble, they know what they getting into. Might find youself against someone 3 times your size, or 4 people at once, or fighting off the ground, with your back against a wall nowhere to move, getting hit from behind etc. Etc. Plenty of situations where your skill or talents in a numbers battle can be reduced to nothing outside of a true 1 vs 1 affair, sometimes in one of them as well.

Bill the butchers skills are extra ordinary 😂😂😂
This makes me want to not complain about any of the “hardships” in my life ever again
One of master-piece role of Daniel Day Lewis.. Unbelievable.
Such an incredible movie. One of my all time favorites. Maybe the greatest example of a man who was absolutely supposed to have been a villain who I just couldn't find a single shred of actual proof was truly villainous by the end. The real William Poole was a different story, but Daniel Day Lewis made him a complete icon and legend. This movie tears me up for almost every character in it to this day. Except the Scammerhorns, Tweed, McGloin, Happy Jack, and the 300 Dollar Man, lol.
Uh oh, gangs of new york has once again popped up in my recommendations. Time to binge watch Daniel Day Lewis scenes again! 😅
This was quite an opening. Brutal, visceral, unflinching. You want to look away but can't. As Priest Vallon stated. I like the mutual warriors respect both Bill and Priest shared, and how Bill essentially went into mourning commemorating his fallen foe thereafter on the anniversary. They were no different as he himself pointed out.
Did the leader of the Shark Tails really get fish hooked? 😂 2:42
Daniel Day-Lewis commands every single scene he shows up in.
The very moment you realize that right up until the 1880s, transportation, lighting, and the mindset of people were still the same as that of the Imperial Roman period and the Middle Ages. Everything and every technological innovation we have today came from 1880s onward. At the time of this legendary gang battle, homes were still lit and heated with the same implements that a farmer in Anglo Saxon England would be familiar with. But 20 years later, the D-cell flashlight was invented and was available to purchase at one of the very stores on that same street.
Pure nonsense.

That's why it cracks me up that some people don't view Bill as the villain. One of his first acts in this film was to throw one of his fellow "natives" under the bus for his own benefit. The guy was an awful human, and even Daniel Day Lewis would probably resent anyone who was sympathetic to that absolute soulless human being he portrayed.

@0:20 Native Americans: wat?
Yea anyone born in any country in native?
Native of the United States, not the Americas.
@@gamevidz8763
That's not true. If I, a white guy, was born in Africa, I wouldn't be a native African, would I? To be a native of a country you must belong to an ethnic group that is native to that particular country.
But Anglo-Americans have been in the Americas for 400 years at this point, so it's kind of up for debate as to whether or not they're native or not. 400 years is a long time. Maori are considered native to New Zealand despite only being their for 800 years.

Fun fact:
Liam Neeson did indeed die during the filming of this scene. All the reactions from the cast members were genuine. Director Martin Scorsese switched the prop knife used during rehearsal with a real one to achieve the desired effect.
In an interview with Vanity Fair in 2023, Daniel Day-Lewis confessed that Scorsese didn’t need to switch the prop knife since Day-Lewis had also prepared a real knife to kill Liam Neeson during the shoot as part of his method acting.
Bravo!
Now it is rumored that Neeson actually is alive and lives on Madagascar island together with Michael Jackson, Napoleon and Adolf.

i dont get it why one cant understand this. Everything makes perfect sense
It's mostly ritualized combat. Europe really domesticated warfare before the world wars.
Lol it cause both leaders know they are the same guy. They fought many times in hand to hand combat with honor which is how they earn each other respect even though they hated each other.
You should watch the movie. He explains his respect for the priest
The reason they become leaders of those groups is because they know how to treat people to earn the respect of everyone around them.
They're enemies because they're competing for something, not because they don't like each other.

I like how pointless this movie was. They all fought for control but in the end, the government took over. It's as if they thought it would always be like this. I always hated this movie.
That was the entire point. ALL OF THAT, for absolutely nothing. Fast forward 140+ years, and no one remembers any of it, and it’s not even taught in schools. All that violence & bloodshed, but the end, it was all pointless. That WAS the point.
@@JohnDoe-zr8pc That's always what happens. Give it enough time, and hardly anyone will remember most stuff that happened this year as well. Might take 200 years, might take 500 years, might take 1000 years, but there will be a time where any of the current wars will be remembered.

Theirs a reason it wasn't taught it schools. The old order are the protestants and new order were the catholics.
