  • Are you experiencing thyroid-related hair loss? If so, you aren't alone! Hair loss is one of the most damaging and concerning symptoms caused by low thyroid function and it's what we are going to be discussing today!
I've talked previously about how to treat thyroid-related hair loss and today I want to expand on that.
But to recap, you need to know the basics. If you want to treat thyroid-related hair loss at the most basic level then you need to do 3 things:
#1. Optimize thyroid function with thyroid medication.
#2. Optimize iron status by looking at ferritin.
#3. Make sure you replace lost nutrients.
Doing this will help MOST people with hair loss related to their thyroid! If you haven't done these things then you should start there.
Today we are going to talk about additional or more advanced hair loss therapies that thyroid patients can use if they are suffering from hair loss or if those treatments listed above didn't work.
These therapies are very effective and help the different types of hair loss that thyroid patients experience including androgenetic alopecia, autoimmune alopecia, and diffuse alopecia.
    These treatments include:
    #1. Microneedling
    #2. Platelet-rich plasma
#3. Low-level light therapy (red laser & LED therapy)
    #4. Spironolactone (oral medication)
#5. Minoxidil (Rogaine) - FDA-approved for hair loss in women
#6. Caffeinated shampoo & topical zinc
    #7. Finasteride (oral medication)
These are thyroid hair loss treatments that can be used on top of whatever you are doing now.
They may not all work but as you pick and choose between them you will eventually find what works best for your body.

I am taking 10,000mcg of Biotin AND I have begun mixing cold pressed castor oil with natural ingredients shampoo. I've also begun plant based protein powder, 30 mgs per glass per day. After about 2-3 months, not only has my hair STOPPED falling out (2 days ago my brush had NO FALLEN HAIRS), but my forehead hairline is beginning to regrow!!!
I've tried and tried many things...THIS has worked for me!!!

I’m so frustrated with my hair and it really gets me down. I also have pcos and I’m taking Spironolactone (for 6yrs) and I absolutely love it!! No more cystic acne and horrendous periods but… I still have thin hair that I can’t grow long and leave down as it looks like strands! I use a Halo hair extension which doesn’t damage or pull hair. My thinning is mainly all around my hair line inc the nape and hair grows 2-3inches then falls out again and it’s been doing that for over 10yrs. Just had my testosterone tested and its bang in the middle of the reference range. I can’t tolerate levothyroxine and have been on T3 only meds for nearly 9yrs (I currently take 75 a day). I take high strength biotin and started zinc and selenium. I struggle to keep my folate and vit d up so I’m always tweaking my supplement dosages. I’ve tried Nanogen and and Nioxin for a few months each snd no difference. The two main problems that get me down are my weight and hair loss. Thank you for this video, I will see what other steps I can try x

I changed my diet, got off meds, upped my protein, added in a few vitamins and haven’t had a issue in 4 years. Lost 97 pounds without exercise. I just added in weight training and walking more this week. There is hope but sadly people don’t want to change their lifestyle to heal theirselves. (Not saying you in general but many just don’t and make excuses) I was that woman 4 years ago!

Before thyroid I could lose weight easily if I tried. But, AIP was sooooo hard but it worked. I think maybe starting slower like going gluten and dairy free will help. I anticipated my hairloss would improve once my Hashimotos was being treated properly but I discovered I had Alopecia Areata and Telogen Affluvium (which often run in parallel with Hashimotos) as well. I've embraced wig wearing. The wig community is fantastic and once you get used to the idea choosing and wearing wigs is great fun. All the hairloss treatments I tried were time consuming, expensive and didn't provide a permanent solution.

I've always had thin hair and had been on spiro for over 10 years to treat cystic acne, which it controlled beautifully, but it never helped increase hair growth. But, I've been taking Dr. Child's thyroid supplements for about 2 months and my hair is actually thicker!! I don't know if it's the amount of biotin or the selenium or zinc, but I don't care. Those supplements have helped my energy levels (which is why I bought them) but the hair growth is definitely a bonus. Even my boyfriend commented on how much thicker my hair has grown in. I love your supplements and all your videos, Dr. Childs, THANK YOU!!!!

    • @drwestinchilds

Yes, if it is significant then that would count as diffuse hair loss which could be related to your thyroid.

I have Hashimoto's and no one told me my hair would fall out. By the handful. Thankfully, I had thick hair to start with but it's noticeable. I don't have as many hairs and what I do have is wispy thin. I started dermarolling about a year ago and migrated to microneedling about six months ago and it's really made a difference. Yes, a quality pen is necessary. You can combine microneedling with topicals for greater success. microneedling improves the penetration of the minoxidil-like topicals. I buy a numbing cream off the 'Zon and apply that to more tender areas and leave it for 15 minutes or so and then the microneedling is much easier to do and I get it done much faster. My doctor treats me to my test results an not by symptoms and other signs. I had a good doctor but he died and I can't find another doctor like him.

Hello...what if you have a high ferritin level...due to inflamation...but a low serum iron. If you try and resolve the 'low iron' wont this iron just be 'locked up' along with the already high ferritin. I believe this can be a real problem caused by inflamation due to insulin resistance and a number of other issues related to thyroid disease

I’m 23 yrs old and starting losing hair about 9 years ago, it has been gradual. Now I can literally feel my scalp, I’m balding on my parietal scalp the most, then frontal and then also overall. It’s been affecting me to a point that it resulted in suicide attempts. I have hashimoto’s and recently my TSH was 6, which the doctor refused to treat me for. I’ve gained weight have had pretty bad hirsutism since I was 13. My testosterone was in the middle range. But my periods are normal so Idk if it’s pcos. My pelvic ultrasound had something which the doctor couldn’t tell but said “yeah it must be cysts then” just when i told her I’m looking for whether I’ve pcos. I’ve been on and off OCPs, metformin and spironolactone. I don’t want to take spiro bcz i realised it’s making my breast size increase, and isn’t really working for my hair. Nothing works. Everyone says androgenic alopecia can’t be reversed. Idk if i have telogen effluvium since it’s been too long. I’m starting on euthyrox (levo) to correct my hypothyroidism. I’ll also give spironolactone and metformin a chance. Take iron, vitC, omega3, glutathione, vitD, folic acid, selenium, zinc and B-complex vitamins. I’ll try dermarolling with minoxidil and reducing any physical stresses to my hair. I don’t know if i should hold on to hope. I feel terrible and helpless. Should I hold on to hope? Has anyone seen results?

Dermatologists recommend minoxidil or similar but you need to continue taking it for life otherwise you go back as things were...best to discuss with your doctor though.
Rosemary oil is a natural thing to try.
      Onion oil or juice...
Hairmax devices more expensive but seem to work for some.
Plenty of things to try at the moment.
People are suffering from Covid...thyroid...stress...menopause if older...lots of reasons.
You need to find what will work for you but nothing a quick fix.

I don’t understand I can’t tolerate Levo 75 mcg but can tolerate 50 in a compound, but I think the Dr needs to reduce the Levo in my compound, because of the increase doses of Liothyronine. I’ve read it and heard it from a few people. People just don’t understand how hard it is to struggle with Hashimotos and all the other deceases that come along with it. 16 years ago I lost my son, I have been ill ever since. I am tired.
