  • Alice was a cigar and gun toting gambler in the Old West. She made a healthy living as a gambler after being widowed and broke. During her time playing poker she drew huge crowds and was really popular. Her story is an interesting one that is worth remembering.

      Technically people in a round about what are still doing crazy stuff in that area. All of that Badlands area was settled illegally. It was all Souix land and was not supposed to be settled by anyone. So every brothel, saloon, hotel, general store, blacksmith shop, church, home or any other business is technically illegal. It is still a hot debate and has even found it's way into court. I think people in those sorts of areas had to have a different mindset because they knew they weren't supposed to be there. The descendants have just grown accustomed to being there so it doesn't seem as noticeable. It is certainly different from anywhere else. Thank you for watching!

      Many people wonder if prostitution was legal in the Badlands since it went on for over 100 years even up to 1980. The answer is no it wasn't legal. But neither were the saloons, blacksmiths, general stores, or any other place of business, church or house. It was all Souix land and the people that settled there in the Badlands were all breaking the law whether they were ministers, preachers or whatever else. That is what I mean by a different mindset. It's still sort of a hot debated topic and one that has found its way in the courts.

      @@RhettyforHistory Very true Rhetty. Anglos definitely took over land that our government at the time had promised to the Natives! That was the cause of some Natives committing "depredations." It was a horrible, horrible vicious cycle 😢

    • @RhettyforHistory
      @RhettyforHistory  3 года назад +1

      You're right. It's one thing if they renegotiated a treaty but that never took place in the Badlands. Technically the land is still the Souix. We may see that go back. They have won some cases going back to the 70s and have taken some land back. It's truly a different case than anywhere else. The only place that remotely comes close is the Muscogee Creek here in Oklahoma.

But Bonnie didn't smoke the cigars, Clyde did. But I didn't know that Poker Alice was buried in South Dakota or where she was from. Just curious while you are in South Dakota are you going stop by Deadwood and visit Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane's gravesites? Also U.S. Marshall Seth Bullock is buried in the same cemetery. Hi Rhetty, I watched this twice in case I missed something, very interesting.I think she was a very savvy woman and led a interesting life. I love the photo of the jail, although I’m sure being in there today wouldn’t be fun, it wouldn’t be any where near as bad as being in that. I saw an episode of the American pickers once, with Mike and Frank, they went to Sturges for a really big motorcycle thing. Bet it’s busy at that time of year. Would love to see South Dakota, probably won’t make it from Australia now, is it as fascinating as I think it would be ? I know it as the Wild West but noticed in all your videos that you all say Old west, I’ve never mentioned it before, but was curious. Is there just two names for it, or has it been changed to Old West ? Thanks again, loved it 😊

    • @RhettyforHistory
      @RhettyforHistory  3 года назад +1

      No it hasn't been changed there are multiple names describing anything west of the Mississippi River. Some say Wild West or Old West while others say American West. Hollywood pretty much likes to show desert like areas with western movies but much of the West was not like that. Sturgis really swells up during that motorcycle rally. This was the first time I had ever been there but you could really get a grasp on that event based on some of the venues that were there. They were huge and empty. Thank you so much for watching!

    I have a question for you. Awhile back I remember seeing a video on RUclips where a guy visited the Old Spanish Fort Cemetery (near Saint Jo, Texas) and the guy showed some tombstones and one of them was broken pretty badly, and the guy said that someone should come and repair it. I realized that the guys last name was the same as my Grandmother's maiden name, so I looked up the name and found out it was one of my ancestors, and the cemetery is in a ghost town just south of the red River which is just about 40 mins from me.
    My question is, was that you that visited that graveyard? I have rewatched as many of your videos as I could but I can't find that particular video. Do you keep a list of which cemeteries you visit? Please let me know so I can save that video to watch again. I am researching how to repair his headstone and plan on my initial visit to see it in the Fall when it cools off here in north Texas. Thanks for any help you can give me with my question. The cemetery s name is: Old Spanish Fort, it's in Montague County Texas. Thanks again.

      I have a playlist on youtube of every cemetery that I have ever visited but that is definitely not one that I have ever visited. It does sound like an interesting one. What kind of repairs do you need to make on the headstone?

      @@RhettyforHistory I'm not entirely sure, from what I remember from the video it was a small one and was in 2 or 3 pieces. The one shown on find a grave does look damaged, but until I can physically get out there and survey the actual scene I'm not sure what it needs. I've been working on repairing my pickup so it will get me there safely, and as soon as it's working right I'm hitting the trail there. It's only about 40 mins away from me so it's killing me to not be able to just hit the road and visit the cemetery. So meanwhile, I'm watching videos on various repair techniques so I will have a better idea of what can be done. I'm excited to be able to *meet* him, and help with restoring his stone. He's been buried since 1877, and from the research I've already done he has either a Brother also there or some other family members. I also saw an old newspaper clipping that mentioned a medical Doctor that was there with the same name, so next I'll be buying some books that tell the history of the old Spanish Fort so maybe I will have more information as to why he was there and what other relatives there that can located. I've been working on my family tree for many years, so it's exciting to be able to find more ancestors in my general area. I know that that line of the family are scattered all over Texas and go back to Tennessee, Kentucky, Georgia, North Carolina and Virginia as well.
      When I get to actually go there I'll do the story and will post the video on my channel. I was so hopeing that was you who visited that cemetery and had the video that I watched. I an subscribed to about a dozen cemetery visit channels. I thought I remembered being surprised that the guy was at a Texas cemetery, who did the video I'm trying to find because he was based out of Oklahoma but traveled chasing a good story. So that's why I thought it was you. Thanks for all that you do, I really do enjoy your work. Stay safe,!

      I really am blanking on who that could be from Oklahoma filming cemeteries and also going into Texas. I haven't see a whole lot of people doing that. It certainly sounds like there is some interesting history there to tell.
