The Nevada Army National Guard has an updated M1897A4 as a salute gun at their state academy located at the Stead Airport north of Reno.

How ironic that gun would be there. Some of those men probably got gas burns and lung damage from that war. The squeaky voice that the actor Walter Brenan had was from being gassed in the war.

As a veteran buddy of mine use to joke "Me Too, Also" You make these little stories as interesting as The Alamo or the Battle of the Greasy Grass ( Little Bighorn)

The artillery weapon's barrel in that plot is from what is commonly referred to as a "French 75" , a breachloading 75mm rifled field gun. Used in both WWI & WWII.
Thank you for helping out on that. I really had no idea. Any idea what the A.BS stands for? My guess was American Battleship?
@@RhettyforHistory That was a field gun. Not used aboard ship. Often the lettering was from the foundry that cast and machined. And at times ordinance depots. My history upon this is limited really. US artillery from 1840 thru 1885 is where my studies are the best.😬
I was really convinced that it must have been Navy because of the gray. Thanks again for the help on that.
@@RhettyforHistory Not a battleship. The French 75 was a field artillery weapon. President Truman was an artillery officer in WW1 commanding a battery of French 75s. The US did not have a good artillery gun, so we used the French 75. BTW there is also a cocktail named “French 75” :)
@@RhettyforHistory The correct color paint would be Olive Drab Green. Noticed the entire breach mechanism along with the mounting base is removed and the breach filled with cement. Fully "de-milled" and very safe.😀
You made my day. I knew Nate Champion but had forgotten Joseph LeFors. There's a lot of American history that has been forgotten. The Johnson County war was a rich syndicate taking on large numbers of lower-class business competitors and "the Law" wasn't quite in the rich syndicate's pockets. There was enough power to keep the mercenaries from being convicted at trial--after being saved from getting hung by "the competition."
It is certainly an interesting time of history. A couple videos ago I did a story on Tom Horn. Sort of shows the law floating back and forth. Thank you for watching Alan!

Rhett, I enjoyed this Old West feature about these two men, they both were very interesting and yet different backgrounds. Thank you! I had never heard of either man before and now I will be looking for reading materials about them. As for the moths, some Native American cultures considered them to be messengers from the spirit world. I will just think that in this video Joseph LeFors attempted to communicate with you.

I loved seeing those seeds floating in the air and the moths and the deer. What a beautiful cemetery. Seems weird though that he would be writing about all of this while he's surrounded and everyone is shooting at him. And how did the journal survive if the house was burned? I wonder how many of these stories and legends were written by others after the fact? Either way, very interesting.
I have the same questions that you have. I can explain away the writing by thinking that there is no way there was constant shooting the whole 7 hours. I have tried my hardest to locate the actual diary but i have not seem anything. I'm not sure where the diary placard comes from. I know that many of these old west stories become difficult to decifer truth from fiction. Perhaps the journal was him but that seems odd that it would be or that those men would allow that to survive. Thank you for watching my friend!
Louis LaMore said in an interview he had seen it. I heard it was placed under a Flagstone and was found by friends cleaning up. I understand he had told them he would hide a statement there if attacked. It has been almost 40 years. That is as clear as I remember him talking about it. It was on a Sunday show on WRC-TV channel 4 Washington DC
That is interesting to be able to do that since he was in the cabin and when he came out he was guns blazing!

Any idea on where that diary is? I searched hoping it was in a museum because I wanted to film it.

I remember the Le Fors name, but had long lost the story to it. Good to have some reminders of the stories behind the names. What a break to have his diary, giving further proof of what was happening. Thanks Rhetty.

No he didn't. His gunfight is legendary and I actually covered it in the top gunfights of the old west video. He was definitely one of the ones I wanted to see on this trip. Thank you for watching Kirk!

Hi Rhetty 🤗 Nate must of been one tough nut to sit there and write in a journal while people were trying to kill him, they were definitely a different breed back then I think.
All those trees🌲in that cemetery with the mountains in the back ground, just made that cemetery look gorgeous.
I once watched a tv show that showed a little bit of Montana, and it looked beautiful, from the look of that cemetery, I’m wondering if Wyoming is similar.

I have no idea how he wrote like that. I know it had to be in between shooting when it stopped but then how did it survive? Those are questions I have. He was sure doomed from the start but he put up a good fight. Thank you so much for watching!

Great video as always Rhetty. I had never heard of Joe Lefors until I watched Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. There's a RUclips channel that I believe that I already mentioned called Wild West Extravaganza. The host done a episode on Nate Champion. I believe it was about a hour long.
That's quite a video with that length. I will have to see if I can watch that one. Do they always do long episodes?
@@RhettyforHistory usually 30 to 50 minutes on average. There's some thT only 10 to 20 minutes. There's one on what Frank James done for the rest of his life after Jesse passed away. I believe that one was 10 or 15 minutes.
I know he was here in Oklahoma. Rumor is he was looking for buried treasure they hid. There is a story I will be doing on that. Sarah and I saw his house and we have photos of it on the outside on her channel. It's literally rotting away with Quannah Parker's Star House.
@@RhettyforHistory if your ever in the Wilberton Oklahoma area there is a place called Robbers Cave, that Frank and Jesse and the Younger brothers hid out at, Belle Starr and the Starr family hid out there as well.
I have been there before but I haven't made a video on it. I still have a lot to cover in Oklahoma.

The gun barrel appears to be a WW1 field cannon, possibly a 4 inch.
It would certainly make sense for it to be from that era. A few people in the comments harvested it is a French 75. Thank you for watching!

Spent a little over a year in my youth cowboying on large cattle ranch near Miles City ( LeFors photo @ 7:28 ). - P.S., in Montana we pronounce "Helena" as helen-ah. - P.P.S., Judging by his headstone inscription, PFC Ernest E. Taylor died at the Battle of Ia Drang South Vietnam. - P.P.P.S., ( 11:55 ) Buffer assembly from a WWI 75mm field gun.

When you where at Navy boot camp, did you learn about Douglas Hegdhal?
I just got thru watching a video on him and his remarkable way of gathering intelligence on the NVA at Hanoi Hilton.
He was one of three prisoners released and spelt the beans on the Vietnamese for their mistreatment of American pows.
Really interesting, I must say.
I remember him being released, but had no clue how he did what he did.

No I have actually never heard of him at least that I can recall. If I have learned about him before I have sure forgotten the name. I can certainly tell you we never learned about anyone from Korea or Vietnam. Everything was pretty well WW2 and before. Sort of sad really. Thanks for watching and telling me about him.

@@RhettyforHistory, Mom use to work as a waitress at a restaurant back home. Vets from the Spanish American War all the way up to Nam would come in to eat.
Had an uncle in WW1 born in 1888 and passed in 1983. Been trying to find info on his unit (U.S. Army - 225 MP 28th Battalion.) but cannot find any info on it.
I'm not sure who you could contact on that either. Record keeping gets tricky that far back in some areas.
Thanks for video. I still think Tom Horn was framed. Not that he was innocent, just not guilty of that murder. You make me want to go back to Buffalo and ride out the Big Horn mountains with these videos. I missed them on my first trip. The highway to Ten Sleep is some pretty country.

I am positive that Horn was framed I don't really believe he was guilty of any murder he was drunk when he confessed, he was a talking to a employer so he bragged. A skunk listening in another room wrote it down. Today legally everything that convicted him would be ruled as Fruit of the Poison Tree.
@@kirkmorrison6131 The neighbor that the boy's father was feuding with were cousins of Bill Miller. He was hanged by a mob in Ada Oklahoma before his trial. Before he kicked his chair out from under him he told them he had killed 43 men. I think Pat Garrett was one of them.
I did not know about a family connection. Like that will Jim the Killer Miller.

5 inch naval gun,possibly from a submarine.
The gray made me think it was from a naval vessel as well. Someone else in the comments mentioned it was a field artillery gun. Either way I really wouldn't know. Thank you for watching and weighing in on it.
