  • With the release of the new Netflix film, Montford: The Chickasaw Rancher, I thought we would pay the old Silver City Cemetery another visit. This is a well maintained cemetery that is worth the visit if you get the opportunity to do so.

    Thanks Rhetty. I walked what seemed like a long way to this cemetery about 25 years ago. There was a gate up back then. A great book about Mr. Johnson is called The Chickasaw rancher. It was written by one of his descendants. It explains in detail how he built his ranch. Before and after allotment. Back in the 80’s his descendants still owned the Bar P Kidd and the Giles ranches near Blanchard. They also owned the Johnson ranch south of Norman at Ladd and Johnson roads along I-35. The African American man that ran his ranch during the free range days is buried on a hill south of Washington Ok. Overlooking Walnut Creek. It’s the only grave surrounded by a metal fence. The original ranch headquarters was in the Washington area. Look forward to watching the movie. I think the tribe made it. The book was excellent. Published by Oklahoma university press. Thanks again!

    Rhetty, I just finished watching the movie Montford . Oh my goodness, it should become a classic. I actually got tears in my eyes when the father and son hugged after the fire down in Florida. Guaranteed one of the best movies I have ever seen in my lifetime. And at the end when they showed the map....the part in orange is where I I last lived in Oklahoma before moving to Arkansas. That was a very special surprise. Thank you, thank you for introducing me to this movie. It certainly is a part of history that I knew nothing about. 😍

    I worked on the movie, it was filmed in Sulfpher OK. I'm happy to hear all the positive comments. The crew worked really hard under extreme weather and production challenges. We filmed more scenes that didn't make it into the movie, one example is a young Montford learning to hunt with bow and arrow. Supposedly the cabin we built for the movie was moved to the Chickasaw Cultural Center. This is a great video and channel.

    I had trouble understanding how white settlers we able to live in Comancheria during the times our family settled until recognition of our family’s history was documented into the area historical society.
    My ancestors are Comanche. It was forbidden from discussion in that area for many reasons I did not understand until it was explained.
    The other side of my family was from Oklahoma. They are Choctaw.
    My wife and married 32 years ago in Jacksboro Texas. (Ft.Richardson) Our Texas history taught us some “different” history than we have learned here in Oklahoma and it’s understandable.

    Wow, I visited this cemetery in Sept. Great little well kept cemetery. I did a video on it as well. I wish I had known the Montford story when I was there. Since I'm in Alabama, it will be a while before I get back to that part of the country. But my Brother lives in Mustang , so I will go back and do a video on Montford. And because imitation is the most sincere form of flattery , please take it as a compliment. Great stuff as always.

    The more I see you feature Oklahomans who had a big part in making our state, I feel I didn't learn my OK History in school. A lot of holes in my education when OK history should be featured in a much bigger way! One semester isn't enough time to learn all there is to learn. We have a very interesting history! Thanks for filling in some of those gaps!

      You're right Leslie. I've always had a question for learning more no matter where I am. I love the old west and I'm fortunate to live in a state where we have a ton of it to see and experience. One semester is not enough and I personally feel it should be a year at the bare minimum. We really do have a lot of fascinating history in this state and I feel that I'm no where near being done. Another great video Rhetty. I had heard of this man before but didn't know anything about him. I kinda feel bad saying that since me and him share the same last name. Definitely gonna check out that movie. It's kinda sad in a way to me that western movies have lost popularity over the years. I'm only 30 years old but I grew up watching John Wayne movies and western shows like Gunsmoke and Bonanza and The Life And Legand of Wyatt Earp just to name a few. My Grandpa had a hard time getting interested in a movie or TV show if wasn't a western.

    • @RhettyforHistory
      @RhettyforHistory  2 года назад +1

      You're right they have lost their popularity but I believe they could make a comeback especially with shows like Yellowstone which sort of gives a nod to old westerns. It seems to go in cycles. I really don't think Montford was well known outside of the Chickasaw nation and the town's where he had an influence. I'm glad that the Chickasaws chose to make this one. Thank you for watching!

      @@RhettyforHistory we have Netflix, so I hope so.
      Just a heads up, I haven’t done my usual catching up on the channel for a while, because my dad is getting worse now. Still not sick, but they have decided to stop his lung treatment as it isn’t working, he is just getting more tumours after a year and a half of treatment.
      He is getting headaches now from the 3 brain tumours, and latest scan shows brain bleed.
      He is still at home and walking unaided even though he is down to 35 kilos. They told him, they may have to admit him soon as he has stopped eating in the last few days.
      So busy helping my parents right now, but hopefully back to my catch up soon.

      @@RhettyforHistory my dad has now finished all treatment, throat, lungs and brain. They have told him he doesn’t have much time. We all just wish he would pass away over night at home, so he doesn’t end up in hospital because it’s very hard to see him then. This bloody COVID, they don’t allow you to go in, and none of us want him to die in there alone. I don't blame you and if you are able to go to sleep you should. I think it's horrible for someone to pass alone so I can understand where you are coming from. That friend of mine that just passed spent 26 days in the hospital and she never was able to see him that whole time. They wouldn't even let her face time to see him. And after 26 years of marriage I just couldn't imagine. So I hope your father doesn't have to go to the hospital either. Just continue being there for him. Thats what is important and you will never regret that.
