    Mattie’s demise :
When Mattie was 77 years old she married Handsome Jack so she might have someone to care for her in her declining years. In 1926 she suffered a broken hip, and thereafter spent most of her time in a wheel chair. At a Christmas party in 1928 she rose from her chair to drink a champagne toast, fell again and once more incurred a fracture of the same hip.
At the Denver General hospital the following day she made out a holographic will on a hospital letterhead. She died Jan. 7, 1929, at the age of 83.
Funeral services were held without benefit of clergy. The pallbearers were informed it was a Quaker service. At Fairmount cemetery, without prayers, Mattie was buried beside the unmarked grave of Cort Thompson. He was her man.

@@RhettyforHistory I can’t get over Quaker burial. But the champagne fit lol. I thought it was semi appropriate, not the falling and lingering on, just the drink part out having a good time still at 83

The photo that appears at 2:38 is actually that of Elizabeth McCourt Tabor or Baby Doe Tabor. She is another notable figure in Colorado history. She was listed incorrectly as Silks in a source I used. A big thank you goes out to the John who noticed it and informed me.

Where Nelson Mandela wife & Daughter & Grandaughter are buried. It's such a shame & no one is doing anything to stop the squatters. I remember when we were in Cairo a few years back, we saw the city of the dead. A huge cemetery with Mausoleum's & people were living in them. The guide would. not tell us much. But we knew about it. There were so many people living there. It was unreal. We don't have a problem here in Johannesburg , but out in the old small towns it's a problem. Such a shame. Cheers Rhett. 😃💝

There are some beautiful monuments and mausoleums in this massive cemetery - but tHE mausoleum takes the cake! I would hate to be shoved in a wall to turn into soup .. Ewwww!! The chapel with the flying buttresses is amaaaazing too. But I hope you enjoyed your trip to Denver!
This story reminds me of two very famous female brothel madams, both murderers and Queens of Vice from early 20th century Sydney, Australia - Kate Leigh and Tilly Devine. Their feud lasted for A SOLID THIRTY YEARS!!!! They once posed for a photograph shaking hands ... but the feud continued unabated. You can easily Google either name for more about their stories - including their business dealings, crimes, and their ongoing feud which makes for very interesting reading indeed.
So it's nice to learn about what happened on your side of the globe, Rhetty. As always, a great video. I'm having a wonderful time catching up on your vidz that I've missed out on - including allowing all of the ads to run all the way through and smashing the Like button - it's the least I can do for the amount of enjoyment I get from all of your vidz. Yes, 30 years sounds quite ridiculous - but Leigh & Devine were feuding over supremacy of Sydney's criminal underworld - from around 1928 to 1960, and both made a lucrative living off it. Both were very wealthy women - clearly there was enough VICE to go around, but they both wanted it ALL.
I would love to see more of that cemetery also! I could spend a week there just looking at the monuments and private mausoleums. And I'd LOVE to see inside that magnificent Mausoleum!
As far as I'm aware, Australia doesn't have any large Mausoleums of any kind. Cemeteries here aren't privately run or owned - to be best of my knowledge. They are all owned by the city councils and you pay for a burial plot but unkeep is paid for by the land taxes on our properties. So.. No expensive Mausoleums here. And I don't agree with Mausoleums based on the number I've seen going broke in the US. It's a strange concept anyway as I'm unaccustomed to it - but it does make sense that 'eternal perpetual care' is a false concept. Sooner or later the money runs out once all of the vaults are sold. By law, they're only required to set aside 5% of the sale price of each vault for perpetual care and upkeep of the building. It's bad enough with many cemeteries we see, but Mausoleums are currently failing all over the US. Owners die, and leave the property to people who don't want to be Mausoleum owners - money is often misappropriated over time, and there goes the concept of 'perpetual care'.
I've been keeping a close eye on the sheer number of Mausoleums in the US which have gone broke, been left to rot - and then been vandalised...it's Disgraceful! Some of the biggest Mausoleum 'fails' weren't even 60 years old before the vandals and grave robbers had a field day with their caskets, selling off the skulls and long bones on the black market for use in the occult.
But I'd still love to see inside that Mausoleum!!
Thanks for a great vid, Rhetty - you do awesome edits on all your vidz, BTW! The old pictures at the start were awesome!

I'm curious if the two feuding ladies have graves? I ask just because many of these criminals like that have graves that are well visited or people even chip off pieces from their markers. I was curious if that happens in Australia too or if it was an American thing?

Excellent video as always Rhetty. I had heard of Mattie Silks through a documentary about the Wild West. First time I had heard of 2 women having a duel. Didn't know that it happened inside the saloon. Can't help but wonder if Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid and The Wild Bunch were frequent visitors to her brothel or not since The Hole In The Wall hideout was just up in Wyoming. I think that mainly they went to Fannie Porters brothel in San Antonio but I can't help but wonder if they stopped in at her place too.

@@RhettyforHistory that’s understandable Rhetty, can’t say out of respect for the families who don’t want the fans to know. I was looking at a sight years ago that showed, or told of where celebrities graves were (I don’t remember the sight it was, it was when I first got into the u tube thing).
The person was saying there is one celebrity, they would like to know where they were buried but they didn’t know. The person asked if anyone knew, and if so to message the sight. Well by a huge coincidence, I not only knew but I also buried them. Of course I never messaged the sight, and to this day I have never said where they are buried.

There are some that do wish to remain anonymous. Most of what I see is that the family just wants to maintain the memorial on findagrave though. Once it gets marked as famous then findagrave has control and anything can be said true or not.

Pronunciation please! The Iliff family had a profound impact on Colorado, and you could have asked almost any local how to say it, as it is the name of a large street nearby. It's cool that you have these documentaries, but part of the respect for the deceased and their families is proper pronunciation of their names.

Is this the Denver cemetery where the headstones were moved but the majority of bodies were not? The story is that the men hired to dig up the bodies were too lazy to do so. They just wanted the cash. The cemetery is now a huge public park. A similar situation happened in Tucson when the cemetery was moved. To this day it’s not uncommon to find old graves downtown when the city is doing roadwork.
