...and their wives
O.k. Thanks, but were these guys like some sort of gang( I ask cause the name sounds like as if it were gang related)?, Sorry if my questions sometimes might sound silly but its that i from Spain and over the last three and a half years ive been really into knowing things about the old west and all this since once after many times after watching one of my favourite Spaghetti western The good the bad and the ugly. Once again cheers from Spain.
I ain't one o' em, so yer guess is as good as mine.
On a warm summer's evenin' on a train bound for nowhere
I met up with a gambler, we were both too tired to sleep
So we took turns a-starin' out the window at the darkness
'Til boredom overtook us and he began to speak
He said, "Son, I've made a life out of readin' people's faces
And knowin' what their cards were
By the way they held their eyes
So if you don't mind my sayin', I can see you're out of aces
For a taste of your whiskey I'll give you some advice"
He said, "Son, I've made a life
Out of readin' people's faces
Knowin' what the cards were
By the way they held their eyes
So if you don't mind me sayin'
I can see you're out of aces
For a taste of your whiskey
I'll give you some advice"
So I handed him my bottle
And he drank down my last swallow
Then he bummed a cigarette
And asked me for a light
And the night got deathly quiet
And his faced lost all expression
He said, "If you're gonna play the game, boy
You gotta learn to play it right
You've got to know when to hold 'em
Know when to fold 'em
Know when to walk away
And know when to run
You never count your money
When you're sittin' at the table
There'll be time enough for countin'
When the dealin's done.
Every gambler knows that the secret to survivin'
Is knowin' what to throw away and knowing what to keep
'Cause every hand's a winner and every hand's a loser
And the best that you can hope for is to die in your sleep
And when he finished speakin'
He turned back towards the window
Crushed out his cigarette and faded off to sleep
And somewhere in the darkness the gambler, he broke even
But in his final words I found an ace that I could keep
I had that song going through my head the whole time I was watching the video.
This needs more Likes...R.I.P Kenny Rogers..the eternal Gambler.
Great song great singer great movie.
Hey guys used to start gambling young! Arnold Rothstein started gambling as a child growing up in 1880s NYC, eventually growing up to fix the 1919 world series!
Interesting!
Santee how about a dressing the part on trappers or hunters
I would love that!
Alright!
Ooh yes!
Yes!! mountain men, trappers, hunters
I like this idea!
I'd probably dress the Gambler part..my mother loved westerns, my grandma loved Val as Doc Holliday in Tombstone...my mother also had a particular love of Blackjack and Poker..I've dabbled a bit in both and some roulette as well myself. My mom, stepdad, and I used to play blackjack as a family thing when I was growing up..round about 9 or so, poker was also fairly popular as a family game night thing too...my aunt competes in pool tournaments with prize money and trips to Vegas as prizes. Gambling is in the blood I suppose.
Then you should rock the gambler look!
Very cool question Justin!! Nice to see kids engaged in history!
He's really interested in it.
What santee said i love the old west history
Great Video Santee! Reminds me of a song by Charlie Daniels.
"Midnight Train"
Midnight train, roll on
Midnight train, roll on
Clear them tracks and keep that whistle blowin
Take this stranger on to Santa Fe
It seems like romance and danger
Follow this here tall dark stranger all along the way
Well the train was rumblin through the night heading south to Santa Fe
And in a fancy car, with a private bar, and a personal valet
There was a bunch of cold eyed men a sittin at a poker table
Bettin hot stakes all around
Ole Louisiana Lou had a knife in his shoe, was dealin' a hand of cards
And ole Stagger Lee Crocket had a gun in his pocket, was sweatin bettin hard
And over in the corner this Mexican guy with two gold teeth and a patch on his eye
Took a long hard look around
And then the door flew open, the stranger walked in and said don't ya'll get excited
I know this here's a private game, and I know I wasn't invited
But I got a roll that'd choke a mule
I'm just about a big enough fool to lay it all right down
And everybody nodded as the stranger took his seat
He knew this bunch of cutthroat's would be mighty hard to beat
As the stranger knew then the toughest two by far were where he sat
Was a pot belly fellow from south Alabama, and a dude in a black felt hat
Midnight Train, roll on
Midnight Train, roll on
Well clear them tracks and keep that whistle blowin
Take this stranger on to Santa Fe
It seems like romance and danger
Follow this here tall dark stranger all along the way
Well the stranger sat down he looked around at all them evil faces
And the pot-belly fellow drew a pair of queens, but the stranger he drew aces
And he kept on raising and pushin his luck, kept on winning like a run away truck
He was giving them a beating
And the stakes got higher than a Chinese kite, the stranger kept getting hot
Till every cent everybody had was lying out in that pot
Then the stranger threw down a royal flush,
Somebody said "Hey Man, that's enough friend I think you've been cheatin"
And then the stranger picked the money up and said "Boys I better run"
And then the bot-bellyed fella pulled a razor out and somebody pulled a gun
They said "You may think you're a sly old fox,
you're gonna leave here in a long pine box
if you don't leave that money alone"
Just about then the lights went out, and they all started fussin
And the lights came on, the stranger was gone, they all started cussin
And they searched that train from front to rear
The stranger he done disappeared, and all their money was gone
When the train pulled in the station, with the whistle blowin loud
A telegram was waitin, from the stranger for the crowd
Said "Thank you for the money boys, but don't feel too outdone
Cause It takes a dog to know a dog
I'm a howlin son of a gun."
Midnight Train, roll on
Midnight Train, roll on
Well clear them tracks and keep that whistle blowin
Take this stranger on to Santa Fe
It seems like romance and danger
Follow this here tall dark stranger all along the way
👍👍👍😎 Miss Kitty on Gunsmoke would play cards every now and then. LOL
I was told she was modeled after a famous card player....maybe Lottie Deno?
I have watched your "Dressing the Part" videos over and over and over, I now have an assortment of "Western Costumes". Great video as always Santee and, you got to say the line!!
Everyone is on vacation and can't interrupt me! Mwaahahah!
@@ArizonaGhostriders What is this "Vacation" thing of which you speak?
Speaking of hideout guns
I remember a return to Mavrick episode of the old TV show. And the lawdog collected all Mavrick's guns. I forget how many he had, but I'd bet he had more arms than fingers, LOL
YEAH!
Gamblers & lawmen; dapper dressers. You gotta look good doin' whatever it is you do. LoL
Do-be-do-be-do.
Five aces is one heck of a hand and one very difficult to beat!
In the days of ocean liners, professional gamblers would find a mark, usually someone travelling alone. On the voyage from New York to Britain, for example they would let the mark win big. On the ships arrival in Southampton, they would find the mark on the boat train up to London and suggest a friendly game. You know the rest.
I do. Thanks.
No wonder I look forward to Saturdays, another great lesson.
Thank you!

Awfully sporting of him to do so. *:)*
Interesting video Santee! I watch the old western series "Maverick" occasionally and it' s rare to find Brett or Bart or Beau without their fine dress coats on each episode. They often have run-ins with some really weird characters, shady women, and dangerous situations at times but it never stops them from finding a new card game starting up somewhere further down the trail! Thanks for posting!
Thank you!
Always a pleasure, Santee! I look forward to you videos. Best wishes!!
Much appreciated. You have a good New Year's celebration!
Santee you never ceases to make me want to spend the rest of my day drinking whisky and watching old westerners. Great vid my friend!
Thank you! Drink up.
Hey Santee! Another fine video. Happy Saturday.
Thank you!
some of them were addicted to gambling, with one saying the infamous “it’s the only game in town”

Bill hand is always aces and eights "Deadman's hand". On an episode of the Real Ghostbusters when they went to deal with ghosts at Tombstone. Several ghosts were playing cards and all of them had aces and eights. That alot of aces.
A lot of aces!
It's cool to see kid reenactors. There is hope for the youth yet.
A few of them are so into it. Love that!

Glad you like it.
I'm watching you guys on TV right now love it
Awesome
Great video! My favorite will always be Doc Holliday. The hidden gambling device shown was also used in the film Solo. Lando used one to cheat Han in a Sabbacc game.
In the original TV series Mission Impossible a hidden card device was shown by Martin Landau character Rollin Hand.
Thank you!
Lol ballad of buster Scruggs reference I liked it lol
Much appreciated.
Another great video. It's great that Justin is getting into it so young. We need to pass our heritage on to the next generation so it's not lost to the dust bin of time and faded memories.
Absolutely! Thank you!
@@ArizonaGhostriders I always get confirmation its Saturday morning because there is a new AG video ready to watch. Its the perfect way to start a Saturday.
Great video as always santee, still waiting for one on drifters
Happy new year to all of you

Great job Santee. Always fun and informative.

I like the idea of old school gambling. 👍
don't forget the video about jewelry in the old west my friend ^^
btw hope you had a Wonderfull Christmas Eve

I once made the mistake of brining french fries to a poker game. They told me I had to bring my own chips.
Sounds like you got a bad deal.

Great channel, really enjoy it !!!

American society has changed greatly since the days of the "old west". Many jobs that were common then simply no long exist. Social practices have also changed. Sure the West was wild, but the larger towns did have the air of a Victorian upper middle class in many of the cities such as Chicago, and Kansas City to name two.Perhaps an episode or two could be taken on this.
I mention it in episodes. I probably will do on on the classes at some point.
You do know how to keep me laughing Mr. Santee. Kid Tumbleweed
Fantastic video, happy new year fellers
Thank you!
The buster Scruggs edit😂
Thank you for noticing it. Lotta work on my part!
Happy New Year Santee!
You as well!
Great video Santee smashed the thumbs up
Thank you!
Great episode, i'm thinking that the gamblers that were really good at their trade could drink the really good bourbon!
You would hope!
I have people ask me a lot if I gamble, because of my name !
I just tell them that I've always been on the wrong side of the luck thing so I stay away from it!
Will go ahead and say it now, HAPPY NEW YEAR ! 😊
Thanks for sharing and take care. 👍
Thank you!
Bat Masterson' outfit in that photo looks fairly working class; sack suit, shirt sleeves too long(unlike nowadays it was usually desirable to how very little cuff) and no tie. It doesn't look very clean, but that could jut be the photo aging. I do believe he was wealthy enough to look the part if he wished.
Yes.
Glad to see a bit more silliness in a video! Not sure what to make of the “Luck Be A Lady Tomight” part though hehehehe. Thank you Santee! Seems like gamblers don’t get ballyhooed like gunslingers do, hm?
You're welcome!
Love it. 7 come 11.

Santee, have you done an episode on derringers, boot knives, folding dirks and other hideaway weapons gamblers and others may have been carrying on the riverboats and gambling halls.
Hideout guns, but not one on folding dirks...yet
I really do hope you do that types horses video I mentioned, you replied yes and I’m very excited.
Gotta get out to a ranch and get some footage and interviews.
@@ArizonaGhostriders Get in touch with Jesse Bell He'll help yah on that one!
You should history videos, first settlers, indian wars and such!
That's what I do on this channel already.
Very good
Im from Brasil.
Welcome!
People played cards because there is no such thing as a friendly game of Dominoes. Its you against the other team and mostly despite your partner. And no those aint all gun shots...... they be dominoes slapped on a table in victory. Gunshots may follow. To my knowledge no one slapped a card down that loud. A friend of mine from up Guthrie way told how Pistol Pete Learned him how to play Dominoes and cards. The most important thing Old Bob had learnt from Pistol Pete was that if you tell a story... make it interesting! And hopefully distracting to the other players.
Doc Holliday was amazing at gambling 1 time he got $40,000 in winnings!
I didn't know that.
Dont know if you remember me,(u got about 50k subs, i know...) but i have commented on some of ur other video’s. AND IM A HUUUUUUUUGE FAN!!!!!!

@@ArizonaGhostriders It is a darn fine hat.
What about the rambler and the back-biter?
So that ACE holster DID exist?

Hey Santa you should do a video on rangers in the old west
Don't y'all forget your sleeve derringer.
I'm still looking for that cowboy hat mounted derringer from one of the 1960s western tv shows.
Never!

@@motorcyclemikel711 it was a toy but idk who marketed it. Maybe wild wild west
Makes a video about the gloves you wore in the old west
I can.
Enjoyed the video!!!! I really found an interest in the old west after playing the game Red Dead Redemption 2. I am wanting to be an actor in western reenactments I was wondering how you got your start as an actor in these old west town reenactments.
I was a Cowboy Action shooter and wanted more. Shooting at targets wasn't enough for me.
@@ArizonaGhostriders Yeah, I got my first revolver after I completed Red Dead. I have targets in my backyard that I shoot at. Heck I even shoot at old glass bottles. Sometimes I shoot at trees. I recently bought a $250 gun belt. Everyday I am out back shooting but I don't dare try to quick draw while it is loaded.
I wear a black gambler hat
That works
It would be interesting to do a video on cheating and how gamblers would cheat or how saloons would rig their roulette games and things for the house to win. Even though this is 2022 I don't know if you still do videos or not.
I've got one in the works with a fellow who cheats...uh...professionally.
If you lose a game you can bet everything you own until you run out of things to bet. And if you cheat you die that's very strange btw I never seen someone take a game so seriously
Well, there was a code of conduct back then. Cheaters were low. Nowadays we laugh at it...unless it's YOUR money he's taking. Then it's serious...right?
A whole video of Gamblers in the old west and not one mention of Kenny Rogers. I'm not sure if I'm impressed or depressed. And the scene with Bill Bixby and Harry Morgan, all I could think was dont make him angry, you wouldn't like him when he's angry.
If he is too lucky in cards check to see if anyone else in the room has an antenna sticking out of there head.
Well, I had planned on putting in Kenny Rogers, but there wasn't a high def version of any of his series I could copy.
@@ArizonaGhostriders My favorite when Kenny was on the Muppet Show.
@@alvinsanchez967 My favorite Muppet Show episode was all of them!
@@ArizonaGhostriders That makes Total sense. When is the last time Kenny made any sort of movie/tv show? The mid-80s is my guess. Still a great video even if you couldn't squeeze old Kenny in it.
Hello, Santee!
I was wondering if the kind of riverboat poker tournament you see in the 1994 film Maverick actually happened in real life, and if cheaters really were thrown overboard, if not worse. Thanks!
There were tournaments or long games like that. Not sure about chucking people off riverboats, though!
Play your cards right go big or go home
