So, no deck of cards, revolver, knife, etc? Oh, sorry, wrong Doc.
LOL!
No sonic either.
He probably carried a gun of some sort, the country doctor. It had far too many practical uses not to. Snakes, deer, two and four legged varmints- the usual suspects.
@@dr.froghopper6711 'DOC'on Gunsmoke carried a Colt pocket model in his bag, it came out in at least 2 episodes...
😃
Cowboy: Doc! I don’t feel so good *vomits*
Doctor: take some cocaine and whiskey and call me in the morning
Call him by telegraph. 😃
Probably happened.
From what I've read, there were so many addictive drugs being used like they were Tylenol that much of the time what the doctor was treating was actually the detox process from a drug, and he would often do it by giving them the drug they were addicted to. Sometimes that makes me wonder about modern medicine.
That little laugh at the end was sure therapeutic for him
Yes.
My wife won't play doctor and nurse anymore. She says we're to old, and claims the "Docs Tools" don't work anymore. She also told me not to even think about getting a new nurse!!! Oh boy!
LOL! Well....then play "Hospice Nurse and Patient"
@@ArizonaGhostriders Eeewwww. Ha ha ha ha ha 😂.
I really liked that you thanked the medical professionals here too! Great video!
Much appreciated.
I played Helen Keller's pediatrician on the stage presentation of The Miracle Worker.
Under the direction of Art Delvechio.
This was back in my time at Azle High School. Texas.
Our prop department was allowed a Gladstone bag from a local family.
Very cool!
One of the few characters that have become a staple of the western movie/TV genre, outlasting the "Sidekick" era. They became almost as important a character as the gunfighter or the lawman.
Yup. Someone has to patch up Matt Dillon's near fatal wounds.
@@ArizonaGhostriders, true. Doc Adams has almost as many lines in an episode as Festus.
and undertakers
Mail order houses of era sold actual medication kits with viles of common medications as complete set. Refills could be ordered as needed. A physician I know has tens of thousands of medical artifacts he's collected over years. He was scheduled to open his museum last spring before COVID situation blocked it. He has one such kit from 1880's, complete, and apparently never used, in his collection. Hopefully, one day, his museum will open.
I'd like to see that collection
@@ArizonaGhostriders I hope he eventually will open it. He has some corporate sponsorship, I was told. The physician is in his 80's and still works a full week and almost impossible to keep up with him while he's walking in hallways. He is doing a lot of telemedicine due to COVID thing. I will try to keep you informed when it opened.
Good morning Santee really enjoyed my little catch up here, always have fun watching and learning new things about these old times in the west, I couldn't imagine wearing old west clothes nowadays imagine how hot it must of been for them back then.. total respect to the forefathers and mothers of medicine,. And to all whom do it noe, have an amazing week ahead mate
Thanks 👍 You have an amazing week as well, Izeak!
Thanks again Santee & Co. My favorite medical scene in a Western is when Bambino extracted a slug out of the Meican that stabbed a guy for attacking his mujer . I roll laughing every time . See Y'all down the trail , and Merry Christmas !
HAHA!
that was the perfect reaction from Dirty Dog to that joke, he gave you the “seriously?” look kids and teens give to dad jokes 🤣
and i would say that the bill for seeing a surgeon costs an arm and a leg but back then it was frequently literal! 🤣
yes!
Santee, you finally got to do your own line! Lol... Beautiful dog, Dirty Dan! 😎🍻
You got that right!
@Arizona Ghostriders hahaha, looks like Christmas came early in Tucson
Wow, forgot it was Saturday! What a great surprise, a new ghost rider video!
Hope you enjoyed it!
The one thing I really like about your videos is not only the history because love the 1800s, but I also get to know the official names of things. That means a lot to me thank you Santee🤠🌵
You're welcome. I try.
I’m not too old to remember when doctors had the pharmacy in those wonderful roll top desks. Mine dispensed medicines in little round pill boxes with the directions handwritten on the lid. Cool!
Yeah that is!
Another great video. Full credit to Medical professionals then and now. I love the practical details on these Dressing the Part videos but also the history you include. In the post Civil War West, there was a chronic shortage of doctors.
Thank you!
Another superb episode Santee. I have no clue as to how much research, editing, or shooting goes into each weeks production but I for one am very grateful for the opportunity to view these every Saturday Morn'n.
And your availability to locations and talent is secondary to none.
Surely do wish that this format would have been available in the '70's. High school Western Expansions classes would have really made an impact in the educational system. I am certain that I would have pursued it myself.
And look, you actually got to close the episode uninterrupted.
👋 Hey Rita, Dan
Thank you so much, Rusty. Much appreciated.
Ya finally got to do the entire outgo and all you had to do was be in the middle of the desert. :D
LOL!
Loved the video, Santee. Looks like Dirty Dog has gotten huge. I have a few friends that portray Surgeons for the Confederate Army. They are all medically trained. They are either Paramedics or trained Army Medics or Navy Corpsman. We actually use them for real sometimes if one of us gets hurt or suffers heat exhaustion. The Confederate Surgeons had a high survival rate later in the war and was completely by accident. They ran out of cotton sutures and started using horse hair from the tail. They would boil the horse hair to make it more pliable. Bolling it ended up sterilizing it. They did not think about that at first, they just wanted it to be easier to see with.
Great extra info. I didn't know about boiling the horse hair. Coooool
Gotta watch those stray T-Rexs that walk through your filming locations. Cracked me up!
Rex does it all the time. We have to take him with us or he screams. Just let him wander...
I love your "Dressing the part" videos but they usually end up costing me money! Another great video Santee!
So true!
If I bought everything I liked in a Ghostriders episode I'd be devorced
@@jerseyred9554 you just have to say "This old thing? I've had it for years!" Lol

Exactly
List of video ideas 1. The history of The Oregon Trail (not the video game but I do like the original one) 2. Dressing the part Bounty hunter or hunter for wild game 3. The struggle of living in the Wild West times as a reality check of why what we have should be appreciated like *cough* indoor plumbing/toilet paper *cough* 4. Food storage. I ran out of ideas but if at the moment but hopefully I at least listed a topic you didn't cover yet
Very good ideas. Thanks!

LOL
Hi Santee! I remember well the episodes featuring Dr. Baker, the resident country physician on "Little House On The Prairie". He represented the type of doctor that is relatively rare in America today, the one who not only knew who you were ( he might have attended your birth) or when you went to pay him a visit he knew your parents and perhaps even your grandparents as well. I remember our local doctor use to make house calls back in the day when his patients were too sick to get to his office.
By the way, some of the doctors in the Old West also worked as dentists. I have seen some vintage dentistry kits on the Antiques Roadshow and the instruments used were absolutely gruesome looking! I guess "painless tooth surgery" involved drinking a whole lot of whiskey beforehand or being knocked out with ether if you were lucky! Lol! Thanks for another great video. Take care & God bless!
Good ol' Doc Baker.
Yeah, Veterinarian, Dentist, Surgeon, Barber...you name it.
We have some of those instruments in our prop Trailer and they are some scary stuff. Can you imagine the screaming coming out of that office? And the fact that Toothbrushes were shared with strangers is enough to test yur gag reflex. WOW! Kids this was fun
@@dannyray4116 LOL!
Paitent: Doctor i feel like a cowboy.
Doctor: How long have you felt like that?
Paitent: About a YEEEEHAH! 🤠
LOL!
Goodfellow is basically the founding father of modern trauma surgery.
You could say that.
Ay man love the vid
Thank you!
Amazing how most of the people of the town, regardless of the profession, just need period correct ( Victorian era) clothing with just different props. Kind of like today.
But the props are truly important! And I always enjoy the history lesson. Thanks for a fun and informative episode.
So true!
Sometimes the props make the costume!
Love the historical touch u put in videos like with the Dr satchel stethoscope an attire thank you for all you do.
My pleasure!
I'd say my favorite 2 Doctor characters from WW media would have to be Doc from Deadwood and the Doc from Bone Tomahawk. The prior is just such a fascinating and great character while the latter is a great costume and weapon choice with one of the only Merwin and Hulbert revolvers I've ever seen on screen and really signifies the status of the doc by owning one of the best quality revolvers for the time
Both good movies.
Great topic Santee, thank you. Good to see Dirty Dan and Dirty Dog. I guess you had go out in the middle of the desert to finish your ending but you got it done.
You got that right!
@@ArizonaGhostriders LOL!
If I'm not mistaken I saw animal surgeon and M.D. at the same ad in a wall. I imagine people in the waiting room to get checked sitting beside a big dog. lol. Wait! Dogs in the Old West is a good theme too, Santee.

Hey Santee!
Loved this video, just like all the other ones... though I was half expecting a Doctor Who joke in there when it came to dressing the park of The Doctor.
Hey, thanks!
Yeah no kidding! Though for what it's worth, Eight would be the closest to the Victorian era.
Awesome video as always. I wish I could film a wild west Reenactment for a short film
You should!

Cowboy: Doctor, how long do I have to live?
Doctor: Well, if you stop drinkin', smokin', and consortin' with ladies of the evening; then you'll live to be a ripe old age.
Cowboy: Doctor...I don't do any of that.

Thank you!
Good stuff Santee! I always wanted to depict the country doctor. I’d sure like to get a broad cross section of what all went into the bags of those doctors. WHICH herbs, spices, medicines, balms etc and how they were prepared to be effective medicines. And how often was cannabis used for medicines? Perspiring minds want to know! It’s in quite a few formularies but there’s very little information on its actual use and preparation that I’ve found. I know that it was very low THC but many of the other components were still quite high (no pun intended).
Doggone it, what went into the stuff that they prescribed and how was it prepared? Seems to me that there wasn’t a steady supply of medicines from back East and doctors had to make do with what was available.
Cannabis was not really used by your typical small town doctor back then from what I can tell.
@@ArizonaGhostriders that has been pretty much my finding as well. Laudenum (sp?)got some use, especially as the railroad made its way through. But I imagine that the doctors had a more thorough understanding of the herbal realm. Too many people make too much of cannabis because it’s popular. I enjoy hearing the real history. Lots of herbal medicines work and the doctors were some scientists. Thanks Santee! I’m digging the content!
Another great video 👌 as usual thanks guys 👍
Thanks again!
This came out two days ago and I didn't watch it yet. I was watching so many of your older videos that I completely forgot to check if you had any new ones up.

@@ArizonaGhostriders from an acting point of view it was a good comedic devise
Great job and well done on the awesome and fantastic informative video, I definitely needed this information for a scene in my book that I wrote, where one of my main characters gets a really bad head wound from being dropped in a creek, after he was almost drowned by a supernatural undead being that attacked him while he was gold panning in the creek with his brothers in the mountains.
This information really helped me out a lot

I broke the hand of my Original 1851 Colt Navy. 😭 I live in Germany, so it’s not easy to get share parts. No wait... it’s impossible to get them fore a Cap and ball revolver. Now 170 years of history can not longer cycle the drum.
Can you make a video of the 1851 Navy in honor of them?
I advice you to take it to a profesional gunsmith. Those DO exist on Germany, you know :-) and even if YOU would have great difficulty getting spare parts (customs wouldn't allow you to order them, due to you not being a licensed gunsmith), THEY would be able to with great ease (they BEING a licensed gunsmith, they could just order the spares overseas)
@@notfeedynotlazy Thanks man... didn’t thought in this direction. (I’m sometimes a little bit of an idiot.) It is still very sad, because every single part, even the wooden grip, was originally made by Colt in 1860. I’m surprised that the Grips survived the hand...
But still, big thank you, you’re the best. Wish you a nice day...
