    The PCIe bifurcation has nothing to do with the m2 slots build in on the mainbord. It is relevant for an additionally sold Hyper m.2 pcie 16x card which can hold up to 4 additional SSDs. You don’t sacrifice your PCIe 16x gen 5 slot when using more than 1 internal m2 ssd as you state, only when you add the Hyper m.2 pcie 16x card. Furthermore this is a chipset limitation and not specific to this board, I am really confused about this “review”.

    To be fair, this board has been selling for cheaper than mentioned during the review for the past week @$205 on Amazon. The other board at the same price point i was considering was the MSI PRO Z790-A or P version for $210 which didnt have a thunderbolt 4 expandability which was the determining factor that swayed me to the Asus. As far as gigabyte as a potential alternative, i believe hardware unboxed revealed their VRM cooling solution was much worse than Asus or MSI, at least in their z690 lineup, don't know if they fixed it for their z790s. Asrock has been known to be shady af in the past so that was a no for me too. Just wanted to put that out there, for $205 this Asus may rank better, comparatively. The Tomahawk is a good board but cost a good deal more putting it in a different tier bracket, at least as far as my wallet is concerned and has a concerning percentage of 1 start reviews on Amazon comparatively to the others.

      Looking for a similar board? So it looks like you’re recommending the Tuf board?
      Reason I’m looking for a new z790 mobo even though I have a gigabyte z790 is because my gigabyte mobo keeps producing an extremely high pitch ringing sound like the one you hear in the ear doctor which sucks since sitting next to it for 8 hours

    • @Sprinkles-BtE
      @Sprinkles-BtE 7 месяцев назад +2

      @@Alex-jb8wr I think I know what you're talking about, Alex. That super high-pitched whining sound some electronics make? Like so high pitched you'd think only dogs could hear it? 😄Sorry, I know - it's not a laughing matter if you have to listen to it all day. I've once returned a self-lit artificial x-mas tree to Costco specifically because of that - I could hear the damn thing every time I stayed in the living room. Wife thought I was crazy. 😄I feel your pain!
      So you had me curious to see if the Asus Tuf board does something similar. I happen to have a noisy 6700xt video card (coil whine) - it's not too bad but it's enough to annoy me so I stick my PC under my desk which seems to mute the noise well enough. But I went ahead and pulled that noisy videocard out and just used the onboard video of my processor (another reason not to get an "F" version of a modern intel cpu if it's close in price - so convenient for stuff like this), just to test it... and I can happily report there's no such noise! Just the soothing sounds of my low speed case fans, nothing more, even under a CPU stress test. 👍
      Now whether I recommend it... Well I've been quite satisfied with it so far. But I've only had it up and operational for a few days. Did my first stream with it last night with my favorite game. Extremely satisfied, actually... but that's because I haven't upgraded my motherboard in nearly 15 years! From an Asus p6t Deluxe X58 platform (first gen i7 and Xeon 5690) to a 12th gen i7-12700k! Of course I'm going to be satisfied with the results. 😄 No similar issues as the negative reviews stated on Amazon - it was relatively painless build actually, sans a bit of a windows 8.1 key to windows 11 pain-point that I eventually resolved.
      If you're OK with the valid criticism that Laurent mentioned during this video, namely the relatively smaller, but still good VRMs... and upper slot M.2 PCI-E lane sharing (which this Asus board isn't the only board suffers from this), then... yeah! I do actually. But just be realistic about my recommendation. It's generally better to hear from someone who regularly test several recent motherboards vs one anecdotal good experience such as mine.
      And there's just the electronic lottery. It's probably not all Gigabyte boards what yours is doing. You may have just got unlucky. Just like my noisy graphics card. Prior to keeping my current one 6700xt, I had another 6700xt that *didn't* exhibit coil whine. Not even a peep! But I ended up returning that one instead and kept the noisy one (kind of had to - long story) but thankfully it isn't super bad or as annoying as some other people's coil whine that I've heard described (some say just scrolling a webpage would make it whine, yikes!). 😅

    i ordered this board yesterday on dec 31 2023. (DDR4 version) . Its for a home multi task server (firewall / IPS, networking Vlans, fileserver, router, VM virtualization, media server). I bought 64gb ddr4 3600mhz for cheap $125us. I will add 3x2tb nvme ssd in Raid. Also 3 expansion card (intel i350-t4). Windows Server with Hyper-V running all virtual machines linux and windows (isolated for each others). This board is perfect for me, 3 pcie slot with at least X4. Also 4 nvme (x4 is fast enough). Choice of cpu is I5-13500 (65w) 14 cores (6p+8e). For my needs (3 slot with x4) the pci lane distrubution is perfect.

    Hi Laurent, is there a technically correct answer to the problem of the two 8-pin connectors?
    The manual says nothing, the Asus forum says nothing, every owner of a TUF Z-790-plus is confused.
    Does this board need you to connect both connectors or not? Some say the board is unstable or won't even boot unless you connect both, others says it's fine with just one connector.
    I'm talking about people who report stability issues even with a 65W CPU. But is that really related to connecting just one connector??

  • @wagyubeef6321
    @wagyubeef6321 7 месяцев назад

    Do you have any references/data for your claim that using 2 m.2 slots takes bandwidth away from the PCIE lane? All I could find from the motherboard manual related to bifurcation is about the Hyper M.2 X16 series cards.

    • @Laurentschoice
      @Laurentschoice  7 месяцев назад +1

      It's not a claim I tested it for you.
      Just for your information, 13 and 14th gen Intel core CPUs come with ONLY 16 PCIe 5.0 lanes in total. The chipset has none.
      So you can't have a 16 lanes on the GPU + 4 on the m.2 SSD simultaneously (at PCIe 5.0 standard).
      On every single Z790 powered motherboards in existence today, if you are going to use a PCIe 5.0 enable m.2 SSD... You will have a PCIe bifurcation which, at least, will divide the GPU bandwidth by 2.
      I hope this helps

    Hey Laurent, bit suppriced that you are the only reviewer that don't like this board, I just bought this board, ddr 4 version, (ddr5 way too expensive to be a value atm) cs my 5900x system went dark. Do I buy a new B550? Checked around benchmarks and even a 13gen I5 is way faster then a 5900x these days, For me the ASUS Tuf has the gen 5 pci for gpu, still runing 3060ti and by far enought got the games I play. For me the back plate con rules on this board, 8 high speed and 4 M.2, for me this is the perfect fit for my needs. BTW the B550 Gigabyte you recommended and I bought died after 18 mounths. Going back to Intel and Asus. For the last 30 years 4-5 MB has broken, non of them was ASUS, still have WS Asus pre iCore with x48 chip and it still works, that one I overclocked silly from 2,86 to 4GHz. Not your fault that my Gigabyte b550 MB failed, you look at how it's looks from an engineers point of view, you're funny and smart. I also bought a 13700kf, best bang for the buck atm is the 13600kf
    Maybe this MB will have 14900kf and a next gen gpu, who knows? just looked like a winner for my needs

      I got this board for about 230EUR, some prices for this in Sweden is over 400EUR!!!, insane, but there it is, the alternative was Gibabyte UD for about 210EUR. I see my self having it for 3-4 years. I have option to upgrade Gpu to 5th gen pci, and Cpu to a 14900kf if prices drop. I had a pair of DDR4 4000, cl18, Gskill 32Gb laying around and DDR 5 is super expensive atm. I'm pairing this with a 13700kf atm, about 100 EUR less then a 14700kf where I live. This is my thoughts about why I bought this MB. And for the first time in about 10 years I',m doing a water cooling of the cpu, the artic 280 2d gen, alrady have 2 140 pwm Noctua so it going to be a puch pull. Silent pwr, I hope@@Laurentschoice

      All installed and working perfect, not mind-blowing performance, but all working as expected, except from the cooling. The cooling is rly mind-blowing, the Artic 280 is by far better than I expected. The push pull with my 2 140 Nocua PWM, that I previously used as case fans is just amazing. It idle at 28c.
      Did a short stress test with CPU-Z, CPU temp is 65c and fans going about 60%. When I game I don’t even hear that the PC is on. Very happy😊
      What I don't like is BIOS upgrade, I had to goggle it to figure out how it's done and it's not at all user friendly.
      Not having a option of upgrade BIOS with usb pre build is rly crappy.
      I have build my own systems for 30years and this is a key functions for the MB to work properly
      For those who are intrested, I use a Fractal Design Define 7 Compact case, best sound dampning and easy to build in case you can find, also not expensive, and like Köningsegg, it's Swedish. Sorry Laurent, but Bugatti spells Volkswagen these days, though I am a big Bugatti fan as well.

    Alert ! Despite being Taiwanese Asus have decided to act a bit like the Chinese. They have a so called "support app". This app gives itself permissions to literally everything on your pc, including your personal contacts, registry, etc. No limits. This is spyware like I haven't seen before.
    All I wanted to know is whether to connect 1 out of 2 8-pin CPU connectors, or both. The manual has no information whatsoever on it, it seems to suggest to connect both, but I think it needs only 1, and I have no intention of getting my privacy invaded in order to send a simple question to Asus. Shame on you, Asus.

    Thank you so much for mentioning the m2 slot taking bandwidth from the x16 slot on some ASUS boards! ASUS really should stop doing this, it exists purely as stats padding and making a worse end user experience.

      I agree, but by the time a real board that need PCIE5 arrives, we would be at 16th gen? ... there is no real competition to the 4090 at the moment and any card that claim to have PCIE5 (but performs worst than 4090 or even 7900xtx) is probably just stat padding their product.

      The PCIe bifurcation has nothing to do with the m2 slots build in on the mainbord. It is relevant for an additionally sold Hyper m.2 pcie 16x card which can hold up to 4 additional SSDs. You don’t sacrifice your PCIe 16x gen 5 slot when using more than 1 internal m2 ssd as wrongly stated in the video, only when you add the Hyper m.2 pcie 16x card. Furthermore this is a chipset limitation and not specific to this board, lots of wrong information…

    Asus no more... I hate to say it my TUF Z790 broke down after 3 mouths, both Jay and Gamers Nexus told me so but it's hard to believe, My favorite brand of the last 20 years is shit. Military grade componests... right...I still have ASUS WS MB with a x48 chip that works and I put that one through hell.

    So I am confused. Is it good or bad? Because all I saw were compliments, with some nitpicking that most people would never care about... JFC. i think he just has a hate boner for ASUS...
