MSI MAG Z790 TOMAHAWK D4 : MSI getting lazy (again).

  • Buy the MSI MAG Z790 TOMAHAWK D4: amzn.to/3gljL5X
The Z790 Chipset doesn’t bring much new to the plate, so it is up to MSI to make us WANT their new TOMAHAWK variant.
Despite being an excellent board in every aspect, its differences between its predecessor, the MAG Z690 TOMAHAWK D4, are too minute, the upgrade too incremental to motivate an upgrade.
I would rather advice you buy the cheaper Z690 variant of this motherboard, which will cost you quite a bit less and deliver identical performances and features.
    Enjoy!

These couple of months later this board turned out to be a little bit better in price/performance. It dropped almost to the Pro-A price level while still offering a little extra (looking at you CMOS button). I also feel it may get BIOS updates more often since it's (gaming) Tomahawk board over Pro-A model - I had that with ASUS where their gaming boards had more BIOS updates over the course compared to "regular" models. I picked DDR5 version. RAM prices also going down continuously so there is no reason to consider DDR4 anymore. Looked like a nice fit for my 13600k.

Was not the case before! Also many more controllers for the USB ports. The old design with the x4 slot in the middle was carried over to the PRO Z790-A and it's a pity!

Hmmm, you have problems reading I suppose.
    GPU mosfet is a 75A RAA220075, not 90A :)

Probably going to say something very controversial.... doesn't make the board any better :)

@@Laurentschoice Nope, but makes your reporting accurate. I don't care for 90, 105 or 110A myself, because u can not run any SPS with that current anyways, except you use LN2 to cool the phases. So to calculate 90x16 is stupid as well. The peak of such an SPS should be around 30A and 30x16 is plenty for any CPU.

Snagged a refurbished model that works perfect for $120 along with a 12600KF for $140 US. Added a 7800XT, makes for some reasonably priced 1440p builds (finally!)

Unfortunately nobody did what you are proposing. The mobos with pcie-5 m2 have x8 pcie-5 for the graphic card (which would also limit current cards to run at 8x pcie4).

Hi Guido :) thanks for your comments :)
You'll find that x670 powered motherboard does exactly that.
Pcie 4 on the gpu slot and m.2 ssds are the only components supporting pcie 5.0
On this motherboard, the gpu slot enjoy 16 lanes.
      I hope this helps

It's ridiculous how expensive motherboards are these days. Only 2.5 years ago this board would be 160euro...

we dont even need 5.0 lol, we still are far away from utitilizing the full potential of 4.0. Ive been looking over z790 motherboards around this price point and this is the best. (ddr5)

I'm (also) looking at the Z690. No real improvement this generation. Just more $$$ (to hide overpricing on B650??). Thanks for the review.

I simply love your reviews mate, especially the small dick jokes crack me up every time.
Could you review B650 TUF and/or B650-E Strix? I'm itching to upgrade my good old 8700k which i feel is bottlenecking my 6900XT in some games.
