The Last of Us Non-Gamer REACTION | Get the fungicide and blow torches! Episode 5 Endure and Survive

  • I barely have words or emotions left at this point! As soon as we got to meet Henry and Sam, tragedy struck not soon after. We got to see more of Kathleen and her rebels, not to mention some of the worst killing vegetation to rise up from the ground since Little Shop of Horrors. Episode 5 was a LOT.
    I am a not a gamer (except a mean round of Mario Kart in '03), and I had never played nor ever heard of the game The Last of Us before HBO Max turned it into a show. We're over halfway through the season at this point, and I'm excited to see where the rest of the show goes. I hope that you'll come on the journey with me!

    For those who don't know. The big infected is called a Bloater. They are one of two stage 4 infected. (The other is called a Shambler, but require a more moist climate). As infected evolve they become slower, but stronger. In the game while it is possible to melee attack the first 3 stages, a Bloater is an instakill if you try going toe to toe with one. Their fungal growths have advanced to the point that they have become bullet resistant. They have also grown fungal growths that they can use as spore grenades. So they also have a ranged attack. They still use echolocation like the previous stage the Clicker, just at a lower range.

    The consistent deaths of amazing characters every episode is insane. Hats off to the writers for successfully establishing, developing, and making them all beloved in a matter of minutes. Then offing them lol.
    While I was anxiously waiting for an intense action scene like we got in this episode, I’m really happy to see a “zombie” show that isn’t heavily reliant on amping up the action each episode, and does a deeper dive into the dramatic side of things.
    Cheers, as always :)

    The 4 main infected stages are
    1. Runners
    Recently infected, fast, agressive, but sometimes still trying to resist the fungus, and often appear in groups.
    All the ones in the first half of episode 1 were runners as the outbreak had just begun.
    2. Stalkers
    Have been infected for a longer time, usually over a month, have worse eyesight and are less hyperagressive
    They stalk (duh) their prey and can be distinguished by slight fungal growths on their head, mainly around the eyes.
    These haven't really been shown in the series yet.
    3. Clickers
    Infected for over a year, the front of their head has been completely engulfed by fungus, forming a sort of armor there.
    They thus can't see anymore, and instead use clicking noises to echolocate victims, making them extremely sound-sensitive.
    Most infected we've seen in the show so far have been clickers.
    4. Bloaters
    Having been infected for many years, these are often infected that have been around since outbreak day.
    They are completely covered in fungus, giving them extreme strength and making them alot more resistant to bullets.
    However like all infected they are weak to fire, and their hearing has gotten worse again since their time as a Clicker.
    We've only seen one of these in the show so far, as they are very rare due to how long they take to form.

      Thank you so much- this is great info. I also liked how you said “they stalk (duh)..” lol. I can’t wait to see what’s next- I don’t watch the “next on” at the end, so I never know where we’re headed.

    • @TheToasterPirate
      @TheToasterPirate Год назад +6

      @@DavidvsFilm If you want to see a stalker, look at the one Ellie cut up in the basement of the Cumberland farms on the way to Bill and Frank's. The one that blew up in Bill's trap was also a stalker. The other thing is that we know the people are inside and they do feel pain at least as a runner. By bloater, that isn't true. The exact time when the person inside fades/is gone because of the level of fungal damage to the brain, that is debatable.
      This also means that as Sam felt himself turn, Sam faced the window on purpose. Two things: He knew he wouldn't see Ellie, which means he wouldn't attack her. He was protecting her. He knew he wouldn't hear her. So if Ellie never touched him, if no one ever touched him or got in his vision, he would be sitting there forever watching the sunset. He's deaf, so he wouldn't hear anything. Once he hit the clicker phase, and he could no longer see, then he would be sitting there in darkness and silence forever until his mind was eaten by the fungus.

      @phader83022 Год назад

      There are two more stages / alternative developments of the infection.
      5. Shamblers
      Shamblers are an alternate fourth stage of the infected, encountered in Seattle and Santa Barbara. They are believed to have developed from exposure to high amounts of water, compared to the typical dry environments bloaters develop in after infection.
      Shamblers are horrifying, walking pustule-clusters that spray gaseous acid and take massive damage before dying. They move slowly, but are capable of shifting into a sprint if noise alerts them. When feeling threatened, they instinctively fire bursts of their acidic spores from their body. The fungal growth is so immense that spores cover their entire body, leading to oversized heads and torsos with dozens of pus spores around them. In addition to this, their mouths have been stuck gaping wide by the fungus, preventing them from being able to bite. However, the growth has not consumed their arms and their eyes are still partially visible. Once defeated, these festering threats explode with violent force, emitting a cloud of spores that deal heavy damage to any nearby human.
      6. Rat King
      This infected anomaly, dubbed the rat king, is a super-organism composed of multiple stalkers, clickers, and a bloater that have been connected together by the Cordyceps fungus. That's all I wanna say since I'm still traumatised by it.

    Shows how hate can consume anyone, especially those intending good. Reminds me of how Nazi collaborators were treated. Yes, some were real POS, but a lot were just trying to survive.
    I would have beat them for making so much noise!
    "...scared all the time." Like Bruce's "always angry." Lol
    I was waiting for the reveal of one of them to be bit...wasn't expecting Ellie to try THAT, though.
    Kathleen, blinded by her hate, tries to kill a kid in the midst of the fighting only to be taken out by a kid while distracted. Couple that with the fact she was ignoring the moving ground to pursue vengeance, kinda poetic. The fact that Sam ends up dying too, fatalistic, and kinda proves her right, lol.
    GREAT ENDING. You can feel how Ellie and Joel are feeling inside. Ellie is becoming more single-minded, and Joel is starting to show cracks.
    I love that the acotor playing Sam is actually deaf, and the crew learned ASL for him. I never realized how different Bella's natural voice and acting voice are.

      what was it that she said?? "this is what happens when you mess with fate"??. Henry ended up being punished by having to kill his brother, making effectively pointless he becoming a rat (causing the death of someone good) and all the death after. And Sam, poor Sam, ended up dying horrible anyway. He became the monster, trapped inside himself, when all he wanted was to be a hero.
      Moral of the story? Dont fuck with fate or fate will fuck with you. Also: even acts done for someone you love can be evil, and revenge will make you blind.

    One thing you said about the difference but similarity between the show and the game. The show does not fill in the gaps of these characters. The game actually shows more of the characters and you spend more battle but also caring time with them. You grow attached in the game with the cinematics and then also the gameplay dialogue between all of them definitely makes you feel like you're a part of their story more. With the show only having 9 episodes they can only do so much. So there's still some deep, touching parts that they either have to skim through or skip. But they've done an immaculate job at maximizing the sentiment with the hugest parts of the game.

    • @DavidvsFilm
      @DavidvsFilm  Год назад +1

      Thanks, @Bone Cold! Yeah I just assumed because a few other folks have told me that characters like Frank and Bill, Kathleen, didn't get as much background in the game vs the show, so I was just going off that.

    • @bonecold4387
      @bonecold4387 Год назад

      @@DavidvsFilm that is correct as far as backstory. You don't get to see that in the game, but you do spend more time with Bill, Tess, Henry and Sam in the game. The backstory is actually a bright idea for the show because it shows you more of where these characters come from and makes you feel for them in such a short period of time. The game, you spend more screen time with them but don't exactly know all of their backstory outside of the time you spend with them and what they tell or hint off along the way. Both styles are uniquely effective for their median.

    Ellie and Joel switch sides at the end. That was the Tess moment from episode 2. Ellie runs ahead while Joel is still waiting at the grave. Tess gave Joel a mission he wanted to fulfill as her last wish. The relationship that Joel had with Tess was similar to Ellie and Sam. Ellie promised (unspoken hope) Sam the cure here and couldn't keep this promise. She now wants to make sure that this never happens again. As Tess said at the time "save who you can save".
    Ellie really has a mission now. Indirectly get through her feelings of guilt. She wants her blood to work. Before that, she was someone who had no control over anything. Others have determined where she grows up and where she has to go now. "I didn't ask for this" were her words in episode 2.
    Now that has changed. Now conviction plays a role and she takes control. She wants to save the world so that there are no more Sam's. And while Joel gradually finds his humanity again and lets people into his life again, Ellie loses a little more of herself and she takes the lead here in the end.
    I think the series showed that more clearly in this way than the game did.
    In addition, Ellie and Joel have reached a new level of connection with each other. Wordless understanding. Both wanted to save the brothers during the attack. That wasn't Joel's "don't do it Ellie" look. That was the look "I'll give you fire protection Ellie". And Ellie has absolute confidence in Joel.
    There was also a little joke about the game. The moment when the sniper shot and Henry and Sam senselessly ran out of cover, only to return immediately. This is how Ellie behaved very often in the game. She ran out of cover, right in front of the enemy and then back again.
    Kathleen kills traitors. This is not the point that makes her particularly malicious. That's what you do with traitors. The people who betray their own people are worse than the enemy himself. You see the enemy coming, traitors shoot you in the back. And you have to assume, if you let them live, that they will do it again at any time. In the history of all revolutions, very few have ended bloodlessly, and very few have left their enemies alive after their victory. They were lynched. So nothing happens here that hasn't happened 1000 times before. In addition, there are no more laws. The only thing Kathleen does differently here is that her focus is exclusively on revenge on Henry and unfortunately at the expense of everyone else in her group. She was a good leader for the revolution, but when that was done, someone else would have had to take over. And, of course, she was a deviant, reluctant person.
    In the end, unfortunately, she was right. You cannot "fuck with fate". Henry sold all his people and the revolution for medicines, killed indirect a good and important man and Sam died anyway. This by his own hand. It doesn't get any worse. On the other hand, if Sam hadn't betrayed the leader, the revolution had never come, because the leader lacked the radicalism his sister had. It's just a loose loose situation. Misfortune on all sides, no matter how you spin it.
    I felt Kathleen's death was fitting. I mean she made it clear beforehand that she didn't care about children (wtf) and was then killed by a child clicker.
    An interesting feature of the show so far is that real brutality is only shown to us when Ellie sees it. We see Joel beating the soldier to death in episode 1 because Ellie is there and sees it. Ellie tortures and kills the stalker in episode 3. We see Joel's sniper kills because Ellie sees them. We see Henry's death, Sam being shot and Kathleen's death. With all other killings (Old Sniper, Bryan) you only hear it because the camera is focused on Ellie while she doesn't see these killings herself.
    I found it really good to make Sam deaf. In the end, this opened the door for Sam to show Ellie the bite and then she could stay in the room with him without being attacked. He simply didn't hear her. Better than solved in the game and has given Ellie even more depth. She really hoped she could help Sam at that moment. In the game, Sam said nothing about his bite. Ellie entered his room the next morning and was attacked.

    This show is a masterful villain, making you fall in love with characters and then giving you depression by killing them.

    You asked why Ellie went into the car... She did what Joel told her when they lost the truck. You stay low, you squeeze through a small entrance and you wait for me to tell you it's ok to come out.
    I read somewhere that the little boy who plays sam is really deaf. Also, he was terrified of the bloater, so the actor took his teeth out and showed him it was just a costume and there was a human underneath.
    The little girl clicker is a gymnast, she's like 9. She's amazing
    One last thing. Do you have moderators that already know both games? Because the more non-gamers get into the show, there are people who go around spoiling what happens in the second game (rumored to be season 2 and 3) so you need someone who has played the game to moderate your comments... I'm offering my service should you need me

      First, I love that. He was amazing, truly. Second, I would be terrified too, and seeing him remove his teeth would not have helped me get over that lol. Third, the Clicker girl was great with the gymnastics, but again, also would have scared the sh out of me.

    No attachments in this show...beyond Joel and Little Bear Ellie....I have decided to not get my hopes up with any other living character!😳
