This episode wrecked me. Joel is such a broken person, physically and emotionally. He's so scared of getting another young girl killed under his care, and he's bottling everything in and with no one to talk to about it, nobody he can trust. He's having constant nightmares and his body is failing him; even the fracture in his hand that was supposed to heal quickly is still bothering him. His frustration when he can't get the boot sole off with the pliers and then he has to suddenly pretend he's fine. It's all just so impossibly sad, the weight this man has put on his own shoulders, that he's willing to break Ellie's heart if it means he won't have to lose another daughter figure. His pain is just so raw, it really cuts me deeply to see him suffer.
Marlon and Florence are another example of how this show is so good at getting you to care about characters in only a few seconds of screen time. Their dynamic was instantly palpable. Florence was such a delight to watch. She’s the best. Nobody is changing my mind. Pedro Pascal’s monologue was such a masterclass in acting. He was able to convey such strong emotion where you felt the fear of losing another child and how broken he felt. And Joel and Ellie’s confrontation was the culmination of their relationship building since the first episode. All of their emotions just came bubbling to the surface and delivered such an emotionally powerful scene. This was one of the moments that they had to get right and I think they pulled it off. They made the right choice to keep it close to the game for the most part as it is such a pivotal scene. Pascal and Ramsey were able to pull that off, which is so important for their relationship moving forward. Also wise choice making Tommy a father. Helps to compare and contrast him with Joel, and points back to the thesis statement of the show.
I love how realistic are the fights between humans in the show because in the game you could legit just throw hands against 10 guys with guns but in the series you see how much work it takes for Joel to handle 1 person, yeah he's a badass but he's 56

This is the most vulnerable we’ve seen from both Joel and Ellie yet. We know watching from Joel the desperation to close himself off to preserve whatever humanity he doesn’t want to lose yet and him breaking down in front of Tommy is indicative of how much he’s barely keeping it together, how this dam he built up for himself is breaking apart the more he gets closer to his new surrogate daughter…… Ellie, on the other hand, is a whole different kettle of fish. This is where her abandonment issues begin to boil over the more she loses her innocence; between being orphaned by her parents, being pawned off by Marlene, losing Riley, Tess, Henry and Sam, now she has to watch her father figure pawn her off and abandon her too? This girl can’t catch a damn break; it breaks my heart when she repeatedly tells him “Don’t leave me alone”.

This is by far my favorite episode as a person who has not played the games and is watching the show before playing it. This was amazing I know of some of the things that they changed like how they added joel giving a pyshical reaction to the worry and stress he has of losing his new daughter like figure. This episode made me cry because of how amazing they displayed Joel finally opening out of his shell and talking about how he is feeling and what is going on in his mind a bit. It was a amazing performance from Pedro which really made me feel for his character and feel sympathy for this man that just keeps losing and losing over and over again. Due to Joel's old age he wasn't that fast or reactive to everything which made me so worried for him and this is mostly just me talking about how much I love Joel because I love his character and how they have showed so much of him and finally allowing us to see what he is feeling and what he is seeing in his mind. When Joel was seeing Sarah when he just walked out on Tommy saying how he was going to leave at dawn I was already crying again because he saw a women that looked like Sarah with a little girl that looked like her to and he would probably think about how that could have been him if he had just moved faster or tooken the shot himself and kept her alive. It hurts me seeing him like that but i'm exicted for next week when we can see if this amazing man will make it through it. Moving onto Ellie: I loved Ellie in this episode she truly was just amazingly written to show how she was afraid of ending up alone when she heard that Joel was going to leave her or when she saw that he got stabbed and when he fell off the horse. This is a amazing display of that kind of phobia. Especially when she is the only immuned person in the world which probably has her fear of ending up alone even higher than it should because people around her could get infected and turn into these mindless things that only want to kill. _____ This was a amazing episode I enjoyed watching it along side with you guys it is always so fun to see you guys watch the shows that i'm currently watching and know nothing about. Its funny how you guys are like "this is a great settlement, nice way to live" and then take it back after Maria say that they're communists 🧐 Why are americans so afraid of this word? hahaha
It's mainly because how things happened in history. The government's of Russia and China are classified as that, so many connect communism with the dictators Stalin and Mao that started out as communist.
A point you guys made here makes me rethink the game a bit. The fact that they are always sent to different places constantly and never finding a meeting point that is quite right. There is always something wrong, there is always another place to go to. It makes you think about (SPOILERS) The theory of the incompetent fireflies. The one that says that they aren't really anything special in comparison to any other group and only have a vague moral highground on fedra. We won't know if that is the direction the show is taking until we see how the ending is handled and even how they handle season 2. But it's interesting none the less.
The movie the community was watching was 1977's The Goodbye Girl, starring Richard Dreyfus. A great Neil Simon movie that won Best Actor and was nominated for Best Picture.
Joel to Ellie: "Dream of sheep ranches on the moon." This sentence says so much. Joel already connects Ellie's dreams with his. Next episode Ashley Johnson (Game Ellie) will get an appearance in the Ellie Flashback. We probably already met Dina in this episode. Ellie yelled at someone during the meal. I think this is Dina. If I'm not mistaken, she also sat next to Ellie in the cinema.
Very good episode! They contrast the difference between the two brothers! One has been living a somewhat normal life while Joel has been going through hell and back! Joel was trying to break from Ellie because he thinks about his daughter that suffered and how he could not save her! Joel doesn't want to go through that type of pain again but I think he has no choice. Joel has a new child/daughter in his life!

She is infected. She just hasn’t “turned”. Remember the end of episode 1. Ellie stabbed that guard when he scanned her. Then Tess showed Joel the red screen of the scanning machine.
That depends on what the scanner is actually detecting. Lots of medical tests don't detect the actual thing they're testing for, they detect antibodies or by-products of the infection. If the scanner is detecting immune system antibodies to the fungus then all it's really detecting is exposure, not an active infection. We saw that with Covid - an rtPCR test is the gold standard because it detects actual virus, indicating an active infection. A lot of early population studies of Covid were done with antibody tests that showed that people had had Covid at some point, but couldn't differentiate between a previous infection and an active one. It's one of the ways we realized that a lot of people with Covid were actually asymptomatic. Ellie has definitely been exposed to the fungus, but I'd say it's an open question as to whether she has any active fungus still in her body. The dog's reaction would tend to argue no. The implication of them using an antibody test is pretty awful though - how many other people were out there who were immune but got immediately executed because they'd been exposed? (PS: I haven't played either of the games, so if this gets explained more in depth later on, don't tell me).
Remember that black lady with the dreads was from an episode of the walking dead . She played a friend of michonnes that she knew before the apocalypse & ended up turning on her & she burned michonne & daryls backs & had those kids try to tell them .
Was a little disappointed by the Kansas City plotline doing the whole "the revolutionaries are worse than the fascists" trope, but it was nice to see the ppl running the ideal survivor community just unabashedly like "yeah, we're communists." That's the only way for a community to survive in a world so isolated, either cooperative, democratic and socialist or authoritarian and oppressive.
yeah, that trope of "the revolutionaries are worse than the fascists" is _so_ ubiquitous, wrong and tiring. but i think i expect that from a liberal like Druckmann, his games are great but he has a really black and white understanding of history, historical conflicts and revolutions, it is much more noticeable in TLoU 2 tho. but yeah, the KC arc was disappointing, they could've made Kathleen character so much better and complex without even changing the plot, but they made her the typical "absolute power corrupts absolutely" or whatever. that "didn't you think that maybe he (Sam) was supposed to die" came so out of nowhere that i was like almost face palming at that scene.
Nothing is wrong with communism. Everyone believes that their way is the right way, based on their life experience and past history. Be open to everything and be happy.
Also in the game idk if I remember correctly bc I may be wrong but I think animals used to be a experiment bc I think there was dialogs or something I'm not 100% sure

But my god, I didn’t think anything could make me cry more than I did in episode 3 with Bill and Frank, and yet they did it! The scenes of Joel clutching his heart and looking up to see a young woman who almost looks like Sarah, and when he was telling Tommy the truth that he believed that he was going to fail Ellie and get her killed. Very strong episode. Awesome seeing Tommy and Maria in live-action. If idiots have a problem with Maria being race-swapped, screw off. Also, I believe I saw Dina from Last of Us 2 in the dining hall. If you don't know who Dina is, look her up, since she's an important character. I also loved seeing the live-action version of the famous argument scene between Joel and Ellie ("You have no idea what loss is"). It was just as beautiful and sad as it is from the game. Also, Joel's breakdown over failing to save Sarah was heartbreaking. I know hardcore fans will cry foul at that, because "that's not Joel is about". If you truly understood Joel, you would love that aspect of the character even more. I bet you Pedro Pascal wins an Emmy for his acting here. Also also, if you truly know Last of Us, Joel ain't dead. I promise you. I'm excited for the live-action Left Behind DLC next week, especially finally seeing Riley. I also hope to see Ashley Johnson, aka the original Ellie, appear in the episode. Again, I love this damn show!
It's a fairly low probability to get pregnant at that age, but it's not impossible especially if they don't have easy access to birth control. It's also pretty dangerous for both mother and child, but it's survivable even without modern hospitals if she's lucky enough to avoid any major complications. My grandfather had an aunt who was actually younger than him because she was born when her mother was 46. And that was in 1906, so she was born at home (though I'm pretty sure she had a doctor make a house call).
Still think they are going to fast. Its should have been build over 2 seasons before last of us part 1 ends. In this tempo it will end in 1 episode which would be a bummer because it could easy be made a 2 season story. Same goes for this episode. Once again an very good episode. For me personally i missed a couple of things that would make things better. - Ellie running away. Should have been in there. It would have just make more sense and it would show here scaredness. -the giraf scène was suchs an epic and beautifull part in the game.
I agree with you but the giraffe scene is after she kills David, just before the fireflies scoop them up. That’ll probably happen in the last episode. I’m guessing it’ll go like next episode for the Ellie mall flashback, The David episode after that, and then giraffe to the final scene in the last episode
you think it should be stretched out but also that they should have included a scene from the game before those events have even happened in the show huh?

The reason Joel loss is so much worse is because he’s like the punisher His daughter died, and he blames himself If he would’ve reacted sooner, he could’ve stopped it Nothing to Eli has experienced has been her fault That’s the difference
Do you know if Maria was the assistant district attorney? She must’ve been at least 30. Which means now she’s in her late 40s or 50 Kind of strange she would be pregnant
Chronologically i think we're getting Left Behind next episode and I'm so excited for it! IYKYK AND Troy Baker was credited in this episode, did you catch him?
I haven't played the game and don't intend to. The only thing I take from the game is the plot and characterization. This was a good episode and I was angry at Tommy for not letting his brother know where he had settled and that he was alright. Also Maria's first action was to try to tell Ellie how bad Joel was which she doesn't even know and is just reflecting Tommy's conversation with her and the assumptions she has made ignoring Tommy's violent background and blaming it all on Joel.
If you missed it guys, when ellie and joel are eating at the restaurant, youll notice that a girl is watching ellie and joel. That ladies and gentlemen, is Dina the girl that appeares on the second game, so is confirm that we will have a season 2, i hope.
Everyone Who’s Played Part 2 Knows Exactly Who That Is And You Just Spoiled It For Anyone Who Hasn’t Played Part 2 Cuz How The Hell Would They Know Who Dina Is
Nope, that just happens in the game, though a bit differently. In the game Joel fell a couple stories onto some rebar and it completely pierced his body.
I actually thought this was a very disappointing episode. Trying to condense this portion of the game and not including pretty integral action that had such a build up of tension. Felt like such a wasted opportunity and it just fell very flat to me.

Ellie, on the other hand, is a whole different kettle of fish.
Tara was a lawyer in the walking dead too. Best friend and students together. Feels like the same world at a different time
Tommy's realization that he is a commie was hilarious

Moving onto Ellie:
I loved Ellie in this episode she truly was just amazingly written to show how she was afraid of ending up alone when she heard that Joel was going to leave her or when she saw that he got stabbed and when he fell off the horse. This is a amazing display of that kind of phobia. Especially when she is the only immuned person in the world which probably has her fear of ending up alone even higher than it should because people around her could get infected and turn into these mindless things that only want to kill.

I promise you.

tommy"s wife has to be atleast 45-50 years old, if the the start of fungal infection was 20 years ago. its almost a miracle that she's pregnant.
Is it just me or that horse in the ending scene froze? 🤣. Good episode tho

The giraffe scene doesn't happen yet? Its probably going to be at the end of episode 8.
