Marlon and Florence are another example of how this show is so good at getting you to care about characters in only a few seconds of screen time. Their dynamic was instantly palpable. Florence was such a delight to watch. She’s the best. Nobody is changing my mind.
Pedro Pascal’s monologue was such a masterclass in acting. He was able to convey such strong emotion where you felt the fear of losing another child and how broken he felt. Showing that vulnerability fleshes out the emotional violence that the show is going for. It really helps to bring their internal struggles more to the forefront.
And Joel and Ellie’s confrontation was the culmination of their relationship building since the first episode. All of their emotions just came bubbling to the surface and delivered such an emotionally powerful scene. This was one of the moments that they had to get right and I think they pulled it off. They made the right choice to keep it close to the game for the most part as it is such a pivotal scene. Pascal and Ramsey were able to pull that off, which is so important for their relationship.
Also wise choice making Tommy a father. Helps to compare and contrast him with Joel, and points back to the thesis statement of the show.

I think Joel's anxiety attacks are a symptom of his growing feelings for Ellie and are making him relive those feelings of failure for not saving his daughter. He wanted Tommy to take Ellie because he's terrified of failing to protect her and he knows he wont cope with losing her, it'll destroy him. But he's conflicted, he also knows he will fail her if he doesn't take her and that sense of obligation either to Ellie herself, or to the memory of Sarah, made him relent. I think it's a pivotal moment for him. He's accepted his duty towards Ellie as a human being ...that's why it's so tragic ...a broken bat handle in the guts ...damn. In the game he fell of a balcony while fighting and got pierced by a spike and the player stops playing Joel and starts playing Ellie.
...note you specifically asked not to be told Joel's fate, so I have not done that. I have just pointed out the differences between the game and the show up to this exact episode ending.
Jackson is a damned close rendition of the game. Ellie's bedroom is in a slightly different location in the game, but it's perfect right down to the wallpaper. The dam looks a little different and some gameplay takes part inside it, but it's pretty close. We don't see the old folks in the cabin. That's a show only addition. There are quite a few locations and scenes that are not in the show also.

If he's doing everything for her she remains cargo, if he's teaching her it feels too familial for him. Which is why it felt so significant every time he taught her something, like holding a gun in epsiode 4, or shooting a rifle in this episode - particularly after the "You're not my daughter" speech; then proceeding to open up about other things, like being a contractor, or even just teaching her how sportsball worked. I personally can't imagine how anyone can think this, the game version was objectively better. The acting, writing, tension, everything really. The one thing I'd say is better in the show from that scene is the fact that it's not bookended by fight scenes so you actually get to stay in that headspace longer.
I'm just so disappointed that it wasn't nearly as good. Bella's performance felt extremely forced and Pedro did fine but he certainly doesn't have the same growl and drawl that Troy Baker's Joel had. Even just the line "You have no idea what loss is" was way better in the game.
Pedro and Bella even said that they struggled for a long time with that scene and they were super nervous for it and lost sleep, etc. To me, unfortunately, it shows.

It's the same way the live version of a song is often times not as good as the studio version because the band plays it slightly differently.

Moments like that are really difficult to recreate. Another moment like that for me is the scene where Joel and Ellie meet Bill for the first time, where Joel says "Are you done?" to which Bill responds with "Am I do-cough-?", the cough was actually a mistake, but it just worked so well in the scene.

Great reaction! I really like how they're adding layers to the characters in the show. The scene with Tommy and Joel at night was incredible. What a performance by Pedro Pascal. We're getting a more grounded, vulnerable, human version of Joel. Given that you control him in the game, if you're skilled at it, he kinda turns into the Terminator, taking on dozens of infected and raiders like it's nothing.
Here we see a man who is getting old, his knees hurt, he's lived a harsh life in an even harsher world and it's taking it's toll. He's not made out of stone and he is haunted by his failures, the things he's done and seen and he is absolutely terrified that he is gonna fail Ellie the way he feels he failed Sarah.
The scene with Ellie and Joel in the bedroom was also amazing. It's one of the best scenes in the game and they recreated it almost one to one. Bella Ramsey's performance was also incredible here. Joel is so scared to fail he's not really thinking how all of this is actually impacting Ellie and it's great to see her tell him right to his face how she feels about all this. I dunno if he said those mean things to her to make her mad so she would push him away or if he's just trying to convince himself. I love that he decided to let her choose in the end and the way she picks him in like half a second flat haha talk about a vote of confidence! A great bonding moment for sure.
You said "there's not that much that's great (as a person) about him but I still care" and yeah that's Joel in a nutshell. They make us care deeply about a character who could just as well be the villain in another story.

They're doing such a good job with this show. I can see lots of subtleties they've adding and I love them for it. It was really interesting what they've done with the changes and can't wait for next week to hurt us again. I'm also really glad that you're uploading these reactions so quickly. The thing with teaching her and that, I think he's been trying really hard not to get attached to her. He probably doesn't want to get hurt again and he maybe feels like he's betraying Sarah's memory. Mind is weird like that. And Joel's it's been quite damaged.

I'm right beside you with the happy tears of their reunion and the shock of Joel getting stabbed and then pulling that out. He's a survivor and should have known better.
Sarah and Ellie seem to be opposites and that's something that stands out to Joel.
I believe that there is a bond between Joel and Ellie that doesn't need a label. What they've been through together has naturally brought them closer to each other. It doesn't need to be spoken aloud beside Ellie asking, "Do you give a **** about me?"
The next episode seems like months away right now.
    Take care, Angela

in the podcast for episode 5, the director mentioned something about the parallels between sam and henry and ellie and joel, that sam and henry showed joel the path he was headed towards. not in a literal sense, but that joel is reaching a point with ellie where he would not survive losing her. He already lost his daughter, and until ellie he had refused to care that much for anyone else so he wouldnt have to know the pain of losing them. But now ellie has begun to fill that void that sarah left, and ellie is becoming his daughter. and in this episode we see that joel has already long passed the point of no return. his anxiety attacks at the mere thought of losing his daughter all over again are almost too much. his attempt to separate himself from ellie was his last ditch effort to build up that wall again, but even that feel through in less than a day. He cares about her so much, more than he even knows, that if were to ever lose her it would destroy him fundamentally and he would not be able to survive it, like henry was unable to survive sams death.

And you’ve played as other characters already, so Joel’s being dead is a real possibility. when Winter opens and the brown-orange-blood-red color palette gives way to blinding white snow and you’re controlling Ellie and she actually plays different, it really feels like a fresh start

that's probably true too, but when the show creators talked about it in the podcast they mentioned it's because she wants a sense of power, she wants to not feel vulnerable in that world. @@YukonBloamie It’s just a couple of really subtle moments in her interaction with him. The one I remember (although I don’t think it’s the only one) is right after they find out Ellie’s immune and deciding whether they still want to take her to the fireflies or give up and go back to Boston. Tess argues for the possibility that it may be true and Joel is arguing against it. Tess looks at Joel, then looks at Ellie for a minute, then looks back at him and says “I get it” and there’s this implication of “I understand you don’t want to risk getting close to this girl who’s the same age as your daughter was.” It’s kind of hard to describe, but the way they acted it made it clear what she was thinking.

  • @lovechafes
    @lovechafes Год назад +2

Idk if it’s the same in the show but it is actually implied that both Tess and Bill knew about Sarah. Bill makes a comment about how normal people scare him more than infected, and that Joel should know that better than anybody. During an argument with tess about whether or not to take Ellie to the fireflies tess gives Ellie a very pointed look and turns to Joel and says “look…I get it.” Implying she understands why it’s hard for him to be responsible for a teenage girls life.

What the game does to great effect is a big emotional cutscene then either cut to black (Sarah's, Sam and Henry's deaths), or you immediately have to spend the next hour or two fighting your way to the next story points. The iconic cabin scene is one from the game that does the latter because you gotta fight to escape the cabin when all you can think about is finishing the conversation with Ellie.

    To answer your question:
The target shooting scene was not in the game.
Everything about Tommy was fairly accurate even if the dialogue was different. The only major difference I can think of was that he was not expecting a child. But Joel is very different in those scenes. He's much more vulnerable here, and not dealing with issues like panic attacks or loss of hearing.
Jackson was only seen from above and at a distance; you only got to see the actual town in the second game. What you saw was extremely close to the game, including electricity, movies, etc.

37:41 They did make changes in the show although the overall outcome is the same. In the game when you arrive at Jackson they are actually out of electricity although they eventually get it back on and you fight off bandits that try to sabotage things. There is overall a lot more fighting (both humans and infected) in the game which makes sense for a game in context of gameplay. There is no scene where they go watch movies in the game but Tommy does say "kids be watching movies tonight" as Joel and Ellie leave Jackson so in the game they leave right before the kids were about to watch the movies. Tommy also has wife Maria in the game but shes not pregnant and she also didnt lose a child like Joel did. At least its not mentioned.

Great reaction! I've been doing rounds of TLoU reactions but of all the new people I've tried out thanks to this show you're the only one that picked up a sub from me.
You had questions, hmmm, how to answer carefully so as not to spoil. You said Joel could not survive such a wound without help, and you're absolutely right, he cannot. But there is someone there, Ellie is there. Her protector needs HER now. Does she have it in her to step up to that task?
This section is very similar to the game. Although in the game all the interactions with Tommy and Maria happen at the dam, not in Jackson. We only see the town from a distance. The game creator admitted in the podcast on this episode that was purely for budgetary reasons trying to model and build a whole town you could walk around in for purely dramatic scenes was just too much, so they kept it at the dam which was simpler. In the game they're actively trying to get the dam working again, in the show it's something they accomplished already and they just go straight to town.
The talk between Joel and Tommy in the workshop is very similar although because Pedro is a BOSS, and Craig Mazin is an amazing writer, it's even more emotionally charged and powerful. The scene with Ellie in the windowsill looking at the diary where they confront each other about loss and abandonment is very nearly shot for shot and line for line from the game.
At this point Joel is having panic attacks and coming apart at the seams because he has accepted Ellie into his heart, but he can't admit it to her or even himself. His fear is overwhelming him cause he cannot face being in that place again when he lost his daughter, and he feels that attachment and caring and love taking him over as surely and inexorably as the infection spreads. Infected by love, as it were, and it is scaring him out of his mind. It's why he's so desperate for Tommy to take her, cause he feels he'll fail her just like he failed Sarah. The fear of that is paralyzing him with indecision.
But once he commits in the stables to going all the way, he's not fighting it anymore, the panic is gone, he still won't say it aloud but she is now his daughter, and he will die, or kill, without hesitation, to protect her. He doesn't even feel the stab from the broken baseball bat, he's in protect mode then and ends that guy with his bare hands in moments. That is the old Joel, the beast Joel, the one that killed innocent people to make sure Tommy made it through. The one who will do anything, ANYTHING, to protect family.
If Joel makes it or not, is up to Ellie and the next episode. But if he lives, the beast is awakened, and his drive to protect will not be stopped by anything but death.
    See you next week! :)
