  • Welcome to The Last of us episode 6 reaction! This episode titled Kin was such an emotional rollercoaster. On one hand we got some amazing performances from Pedro Pascal as Joel and Bella Ramsey as Ellie. They both had time to shine with their own monologues! "You have no idea what loss is" The return of Gabriel Luna as Tommy was an incredible performance as well. This guy has Tommy's voice down to a T. This episode also introduces us to Rutina Wesley as Maria.

Everything in this comment is so true. They've done such an impeccable job of adding a nostalgic level of forlornness to the story, and then acting with these two... Couldn't have asked for a better Joel and Ellie for this!

Are Tommy and Maria both insane or what!? Having a kid when you have no access to professional healthcare, midwifes, and doctors who can perform a C section if necessary. How stupid can you be. And having a child is just another mouth to feed. They sure are selfish, mindless, and primal instinct driven, they might as well be infected...

I loved that they softened the scene where Joel asks Tommy to take Ellie off his hands. I feel like in the game there was a lot more animosity between them in that moment, but in the show Tommy actually takes the time to sit down and listen to his brother.

One thing you notice too is that Joel is surrounded by people living their full lives all around this episode. The couple in the beginning then the people/his brother in the commune. Then there is Joel who is still haunted by what happened to Sarah 20 years ago, his shoes are falling apart, he’s not sleeping everything is getting to him. I think Pedro did such an amazing job portraying Joel’s emotional side, i think it enhances Joel. You clearly see he’s flawed but you’re still rooting for him to get a happy ending like everyone else.

Such a great comment, thank you so much! Everything you're saying also gets amplified when we think of how Tommy tells Joel that they did what they did to survive the only way they knew how - but there were other ways. We've seen it with Bill and Frank, the couple at the beginning of this episode and finally the people in Jackson. It's also interesting to see how Marie handled her loss of a child so differently from Joel. This show really does an amazing job expanding on and fleshing out the characters! On top of that the stellar acting we got just rips our hearts out and makes us smile in a single episode, every time!

They’re leaving the door open for her being (spoiler), but stopped short of officially saying it was her. They acknowledged it’s similar to the story of how the two characters meet, but I think they want to keep it ambiguous until they actually figure out what they want to do in season 2 and write it. The character is listed on the casting as “Staring Girl” for now

Was looking forward to your reactions! This episode is one of the most powerful episodes they've done and the subtle changes they made with Joel's character from the beginning is blooming in this episode. Some people argued that the writers broke Joel's character in this episode, I feel otherwise.
    - Joel cried out for Tommy's help shows his trust in Tommy and that he is open to Tommy (as opposed to the game where he only looked at Tommy, which means he needed his help but can't even say it).
    - Joel is much more depressed because of his grief, the only way you can be this way is if you have a deep emotions within.
    - Joel is physically vulnerable (as opposed to the game where here is invincible)....physical vulnerability can lead you feeling helpless at times.
    - Tess's death made him felt that he failed again to protect his loved ones, intensified his helplessness.
    - He started to let Ellie in, which means he started to get emotionally vulnerable.
    - He saw the death of Henry & Sam, which reflected what could happen to him and Ellie.
    - Everyone has a breaking point, and Joel bottled up everything, when he ailed to protect Tess, and almost lose Ellie, he felt helpless and finally broke, and he can only break down to the one person he trusts the most.
Joel's character in the show nailed it, it has depth much more than in the game, it applies to real life human psychology.
Idk why those people still complain that Joel's character deviated. If anything, it's because the game's character lacks depth that they're surprised by real human psychology.
And man Joel and Ellie's argument scene had me teared up (I didn't in the game). Powerful performances from Pedro and Ellie.
    Can't wait for "Left Behind"!

Absolutely loved your breakdown as well - the subtle changes they made, I feel, make Joel a more rounded and real character. Seeing him actually open up to tell us his fears, his pain helped us get to know him even better and that is just irreplaceable! His vulnerability was painful, but also wonderful to see - he is still in there. He's not just a hardened smuggler shell of a man, there is so much more to him and that's why we love him! His scene with Ellie broke our hearts, and the context they provided definitely helped build that psychological and emotional tension!

Joel's presenting with a classic panic/anxiety attack. It almost presents as a heart attack. Happened to my brother a couple years ago and they rushed him to the ER and it was, thankfully, a panic attack.

    • @OfficialMediaKnights
      @OfficialMediaKnights  Год назад +11

Yeah... We're actually uncomfortably familiar with those as I (Denise) experience bouts of panic attacks. A lot of the physical symptoms of a panic attack resemble that of a heart attack - which is why I appreciated the depiction so much in the show. You see Joel experiencing them anytime he's confronted with a trigger of losing someone and failing to protect them. The tightness in the chest, the loss of breath, ringing in the ears.. It almost felt a little too close to home, but it's also comforting when it's depicted this accurately. Also we're sorry about your brother, panic attacks are no joke. But the fact that it wasn't a heart attack is a good thing! Hopefully he feels better now!

Yes, the whole show is shot around Alberta even studio work. Plus some filming in Kansas City in US for establishing shots. Jackson is Canmore, AB just outside Banff National Park. Businesses were paid $1000+ a day for filming which was probably welcomed for a tourist town in the pandemic with no tourists. They Frankensteined the University.. it's a combo of SAIT (a tech college) and Mount Royal U for the buildings with sandbags and some interiors - both schools are in Calgary. I do film permitting for the city of Toronto so it's been interesting to see what's been allowed and not allowed in another province

So glad I found your channel, you all have quickly become one of my favorites.
Something I didn’t notice until this video was what Joel said when he was opening up to Tommy. He said he watched a man kill his own brother to save Ellie because he was frozen from fear. I knew what happened with Sam & Henry would have affected Joel but from what he said it seems he felt bad that Henry had to be the one to kill Sam and that if Joel had been able to protect her then, even though Henry would have been devastated, things might have had a different outcome. They might have been able to keep Henry from doing that to himself, and he could’ve stayed with Joel and Ellie. Makes it even more heartbreaking for me.

That monologue was so powerful, because it helped us understand what Joel was going through. And knowing that that was the guilt he carried with himself just makes it utterly devastating. Joel isn't weak. He's suffering from 20 years of PTSD. When he was at the Boston QZ he was self medicating with booze and pills. He's been without these coping mechanisms for months. So his trauma is coming to the forefront since he does not have drugs and alcohol to numb the pain. That's why he's getting those panic attacks. First when the couple said his brother wouldn't have survived out there. And then when he saw someone who looks like Sarah. We been knew he wasn't sleeping well. You've got to imagine most of the population born before the pandemic are suffering some form of mental health issue. In the game, Joel is a superhero. I'm glad they didn't have him fall out the university' window. That's unrealistic for a man his age to survive. Pedro and Bella better win all the awards. They're putting on a master class on acting.

It makes sense for Joel to remove the bat from his chest. The only reason to keep it in would be to avoid bleeding out until he ould get to a hospital but there are none around. Leaving a dirty/old wooden bat embedded in his chest for a prolonged period could cause sepsis which would also be fatal without medical treatment. So in the apocalypse, it's kind of a catch-22 situation about what to do in these circumstances.

I really love how they’re really diving into Joel’s PTSD/panic attacks, and allowing him to be vulnerable with Tommy in that way. It’s refreshing and important to see in media. I also think Bella and Pedro are both so natural together on screen, and they seem to have a very sweet friendship. They ARE Joel and Ellie. Between this and the Mandalorian, Pedro is really in his “disgruntled man turned reluctant babysitter/surrogate dad” era-we love to see it! ❤ (Side note: I read an interview with Bella talking about how they’re non-binary and felt more comfortable wearing a chest-binder while filming the show and they said Pedro was super supportive, and that warmed my heart so much…he’s a huge ally for the LGBTQIA community…it’s so nice to see!)

That was one of the things that gave the game its signature tone and vibe: the fact that humans still manage to find humor even in the darkest of scenarios. I have so much joy when you get excited about seeing a recognizable place or voice actor.
I’m also right there with you when things get emotional or stressful. 🤧
The best part about the show/game is that when there’s a quiet, vulnerable moment, it’s allowed to develop and continue until everything that needs to be said is said.
There’s no worrying about clickers or bad guys jumping out and interrupting.
We the viewers are allowed to be vulnerable and fully invested in the conversation and bonding moments.
This particular episode, Joel is so stressed about his “responsibility” to Ellie. I think he just needed to hear Ellie say “I choose you” to lighten his emotional burden.
    It’s sooooo good! 😂

I'm not a gamer, but I have watched the playthrough of the first game twice because I loved the story so much, so now - with this show - I'm so bloody happy because they have taken everything I loved about the game and brought it even more forward. Yes, they have the action still there, but this story is not about fighting the infected, so I'm seriously thinking this might become one of my favourite series of all time. In top 5 even. They do the character stuff so well. For example just the way they told the story of Tommy and Joel from ep 1 to here is phenomenal storytelling (from ep 1 Joel being the protective practical big brother who would do anything to keep his brother out of trouble, to here where Tommy is questioning whether Joel would take a girl across the country without payment (!!!!), having just seen how Joel has come to find him like a needle in a haystack and once again keep him safe.... Just wow.). I really wanted to punch Tommy so bad, he doesn't see Joel for what he is and damn I want to scream.

Joel had to get out the piece of the baseball bat out, it was dirty and would’ve get infected really fast and he wouldn’t have been able to get on the horse and even if he could the movement of the horse wouldn’t be good with that piece in there so it’s a lose/lose situation. I’ve seen people criticize this scene and that the game did it much better and I disagree, sure the game scene is more dramatic but Joel in the game is superhuman. He is an old man that has unlimited stamina, can crouch forever, is stronger and faster than every man in their prime and in that scene he falls from a second or third floor, hit his head, gets impaled and that could’ve hit some vital organs and even if it didn’t he lost so much blood he would’ve need a blood transfusion, like there’s no way someone can survived that. This show is trying to be as realistic as possible so this scene is way better written in my opinion, sure they could’ve made it more dramatic by having Joel and Ellie kill more but this show is taking each death to be more meaningful like Bryan scene.
And I am so tired of people asking for more action and saying that this show isn’t good because it doesn’t have action. The big difference is video games are an active experience. Players are making the action happen themselves and they’d much rather fight a infected than walk down a street. In a show characters would avoid confrontation as much as possible, especially how difficult the infected are.
Television, is a passive experience as the viewers let the story happen as they watch and, in that case, characters and story is more important.
Games have healing mechanic, unlimited resources unless you play on grounded, etc, in the show Joel breaks his hand and has to deal with that pain, we don’t have to deal with any of that in a vide game. In the vide game Joel is an old man that has unlimited stamina, is stronger and faster than every man in his prime, that is obviously unrealistic. In the show they make emphasis on the characters age, loss of hearing because shooting without protection, etc.
“It’s just, we can’t crouch, bandage, you know, and be fine. So, violence has a different impact. Smaller bits of violence do a lot more damage, and the damage lasts much, much longer or permanently”
“When you have an action sequence, it should be singular,” Mazin added. “So, one of the things we talked about was the role of action in the show and our belief that we would appreciate the action moments more if they were each unique, separate and apart from each other, each one of them impacting the story directly in a very clear way and either being very small or very big.” co-showrunner Craig Mazin
There’s action but not pointless action just for the sake of action, every action scene has a purpose and it’s impactful to the story.
I take amazing writing, acting and well filmed content over pointless action any day.

    • @OfficialMediaKnights
      @OfficialMediaKnights  Год назад +2

Absolutely agreed with you on that! Disliking the show merely because it's not action packed honestly feels like a disservice to the story that is being told.
We love the fact that Joel, a middle aged man, actually carries his battle scars - psychologically and physically. It makes sense - the people in this world don't have access to unlimited and solid healthcare. Wounds won't heal right, some injuries one won't even recover from at all.
That being said, we can sort of relate to those feeling a sting of disappointment of not being able to see the complete badass Joel we saw in the games. Realism aside, it was a huge part of his character in the game and it was utterly satisfying to see a man tear through those infected and raiders . However, this is indeed a different medium, as you said. Certain changes must be made for entertainment but also for realism purposes. TV Joel's knees hurt from climbing stairs, he gets out of breath and misses a few shots because that's life. They've grounded the story this way and it makes the world so much more lived in.
The writing in this is so incredible that each change they make are so easy to take in stride for us!

    • @reynaldolorenzo8409

@@OfficialMediaKnights He is still badass in my opinion. In the first episode he beat someone to death, in the second episode he killed two Clickers and like Henry said “And you still alive?” Joel even dodge Clickers attacks and killed both of them, in episode 4 he killed the raiders except one, in episode 5 he was hitting headshots to every infected and in this episode even with a surprise attack Joel was able to dodge the cannibal baseball bat attack, headbutt it him and broke his neck…and we still haven’t gotten the hospital section. He is still bad ass, it’s just that in here is more realistic and there’s less action for obvious reasons.

There are 300 people including children in Jackson. They built this community before Tommy got there. Every one of them may have someone they would want to contact on the radio, even if its' just to say that they are okay. They all agreed on the rules to keep them all safe. We are watching the story of Joel and Tommy, so they are special to us, but they aren't more special or important than anyone else there. Just one time for them would be just one time for everyone and just one time turns into the thing that leads to disaster. Tommy does not have the right to break the rules for the sake of his brother that's just the cold fact.
As Maria knows, Tommy had to leave Joel so he could find a life for himself, and he did. Joel could have had a life like Tommy has or Bill and Frank did with Tess, but he didn't even try. He chose to be a smuggler, a drug dealer, muscle for hire acting like it was all he could do. But Frank, Bill and Tommy put the lie to that.
Now Joel comes into Tommy's life and demands that he leave his wife and child to risk his life for something Joel doesn't want to do himself. Joel isn't an evil person, but he also isn't a good person. He is selfish and it's that selfishness that determines his decisions and the consequences that follow which affect everyone around him as well as potentially everyone in the world.

    • @OfficialMediaKnights
      @OfficialMediaKnights  Год назад +1

Joel certainly carries a selfishness to himself that is present in both the show and the game. It's his inherent flaws, combined with the good parts of him that make him such a riveting character. However after reviewing Joel's monologue to Tommy, I don't think it's as simple as 'he doesn't want to do it' - but more of a question if he 'can' protect Ellie. He acknowledges body beginning to fail him, as well as his (likely) PTSD causing him panic/anxiety attacks, which in his eyes makes him a liability. In the end of this episode he is proven right - he gets injured so severely that Ellie is now crouching beside his passed out from blood loss. Additionally, there is the fear of losing someone he cares for all over again - which is a very relatable fear to have.

@The Media Knights honestly if I make TLOU tv series I would of made ep 5 a lot differently like:
For the battle I would of made the Bloater come out of the ground on the back of a Moler as his mount carrying a cordyseps fungus covered staff with freshly severed human heads hanging from the top of it and the infected line up behind him and when he pointed his staff the infected take off.
for the ending when Sam turns I would of made Joel tell Ellie to go outside the room while he shoots infected Sam dead and snaps Henry’s neck offscreen and burns both bodies on a pyre which Ellie and Joel stands in front of until it’s a pile of embers charred skeletons.
I would made Perry’s death different instead of the bloater tearing his head off the bloater’s Moler mount would pick him up in it’s clawed hands and eat him whole.

    Game spoiler-ish……
So like I’ve said I haven’t played the games but there is one part I kinda know about, don’t know the details of the scene, but it sounds cool. There was at least 2 more references to it this episode. When Ellie was in that room where Joel & her were talking, there was a stuffed animal and also a picture on the wall of one. Hopefully they’ll include it in the show cuz I’m betting that part from the game was cool.

This episode was amazing with all the little references. But more
Importantly! Those performances man! What an episode for Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsay. They absolutely nailed one of the most iconic scenes in the game 👏

    But i think not.
Wiee, I'm a bit late. I just want to say that I appreciate how they demonstrated the part where Joel got impaled, y'now we gotta stick to reality. It was more realistic than the game, I remember how worried I am if Joel's gonna survive his injury from the game without real medical care, but yeah, the introduction of anxiety/panic attacks, things happening in his chest.. I think them hinting that Joel is also getting older and weaker as the day goes by kinda adds severity to the injury he got from the show. I also kinda wished that we got a few more melees at the hospital, I feel like they got past the antagonists pretty quickly, but at the same time it really felt well-paced because we got to see plenty of Jackson and a few cameos from Part II. Overall, I loved the episode ♥️

You are so right on that one! It did feel so much more life threatening in the game, but this is a different medium so changes are to be expected. Absolutely loved that they added Joel's physical and psychological deterring health - him experiencing panic attacks after living through so many traumatic situations so close to home, it makes sense for him to get triggered. We love the depth this added to his character and the show.
Maaaan that hospital sequence with the raiders was so badass in the game!! Kinda wished to see that part too, but best guess is that they're saving themselves for a more epic action sequence in the near future. Overall the show indeed is fantastic and an incredible adaptation of this beloved game!!
