Maria to Ellie: "Be careful who you put your faith in. The only people who can betray us are the one we trust." Probably the most important sentence of this episode if not of the whole series. Joel to Ellie: "Dream of sheep ranches on the moon." This sentence says so much. Joel already connects Ellie's dreams with his. Ellie drank from Joel's liquor and it was STILL grose. That was a callback to the DLC. Next episode Ashley Johnson (Game Ellie) will properly get an appearance in the Ellie Flashback (Game DLC). This episode was a feast for everyone who played Part 2. we met Dina, properly Jessie, Shimmer, Bison Bar, sheep, kids playing snowball, Astronauts, Jackson see from the inside. Simply fantastic. And it is also very conspicuous that we only see explicit violence when Ellie sees it. Otherwise, the camera is always switched to Ellie during killings and we don't see them, we only hear them. Makes it clear, at least for me, that the story is about Ellie and not Joel. This has been going on since episode 1. And even in the beginning of episode 1, Sarah was in focus. Small information about the game and spoiler for part 1 of the game. Originally, Druckman planned to kill Joel in Part 1. Not everyone knows that. This was prevented because a glimmer of hope was to remain (studio wish). Neil Druckman said about the series that he wants to show things that could not be shown in the game. The series gives him the freedom to do so. We have already seen this. The campfire scene was supposed to go into the game, but didn't make it. Here it was shown. So anyone who thinks Joel isn't going to die or might die shouldn't be so sure.
Fun fact: the girl singing at the end is the show runner Craig Mazin’s daughter. He told her to sing it as a sad song. Like a daughter who lost her father. Also Jackson was still a large community in the first game. We see it I believe twice from the outside. Whenever Joel and Ellie part ways with Tommy & at the end of the game.
Also, the song she’s singing is Depeche Mode’s “Never let me down again”, the 1980s song that came onto the radio, unheard, after Joel, Tess and Ellie had already left his apartment at the end of episode1 - meaning trouble, as per Bill and Frank’s code…
I've never played...or even heard of the game (100% not a gamer). However, I'm loving this show. The character of Ellie is wonderful and the young actress that plays her is phenomenal! I'm hooked.
Same here. Instead I watched the gameplay on youtube so I could see the story play out. Christopher Odd is one of the better channels to watch for gameplay because he provides non-annoying, intelligent commentary. haha
Did anyone else think that Pedro/Joel had a more pronounced southern twang in this ep? It was really noticeable. I don't know if it's because he spoke more or because he was around Tommy. Or is it just me?
Possibly a combination of being around Tommy and being in states of heightened emotion. My Philly accent gets thicker when I’m around others with the same accent and when I’m in my feelings, good or bad.
It's actually common for the live action version to be different. Walking Dead was based on a comic book. They overall story is the same but they change it enough that it will still be interesting to people who are already familiar with the original media so they will have sone surprises too.
I’m gonna take this moment to say in the games a really missable detail before anything goes down, so it’s not really spoilery! With a super zoomed in view on prescription bottles, you can see Joel has a bunch of anxiety medications and more(?) I don’t remember what’s all there
this show is absolutely amazing. and i'ma say it again, i'm so glad i have never played this game or even watched any gameplay videos b/c it is so good not knowing what is going to happen. when the show is done i'll have to get a PS and check out the game. but not till this show ends. great job guys.
This episode was so perfect!! The reunion with Joel and Tommy, Joel crying, seeing a girl that looks like Sarah, the ptsd Joel has the hug between Joel and Tommy the conversation too, the talk between Joel and Ellie and a lot of stuff I wanna talk about!!! Everything was great!!!!
The song at the end is the same 80s song that plays on the radio at the end of episode 1, that we are suppose to assume to be a message from Bill meaning trouble, he must have sent it before he committed suicide with Frank but it was by the original group..Depeche mode maybe, I'm not sure. It's interesting that they used it again at the end of this episode because it fits in both cases
Actress Rutina Wesley is really making the rounds on our shows, True Blood, TWD n now TLOU. Such a good episode tho. Ellie n Joel's relationship is growing so much n I'm loving it! And Joel's n Tommy's reunion.. 🥺

I watched the episode yesterday and i cried on 5 places.. and i was laughing when u said u wont cry this episode 🤣.. but really they just dont stop what is this no normal episode every episode is smth else .. im left speechless from this show im almost sure it will top GoT for me personally
Showing my age here but I was pleasantly surprised to see the quick clip of The Goodbye Girl as the movie for movie night. I’m sure there was a reason why they picked that movie.
loosing a child is the biggest fear of any parents ,there's not even a word for that. I would kill, betray, and steal from anyone to keep my child safe. So no wonder Joel is still destroyed about it
Watching this episode again, you notice the hints throughout regarding Joel’s demise. Right from the beginning, the native woman saying, “I scared him.” And the closeup on Joel’s face. Joel’s panic attacks. Joel pleading with Tommy to take Ellie because of his dreams. The man knows his time is coming. This episode was masterfully done. The only thing is, if you’ve played the game, you know how this episode progresses. Still entertaining. The other thing is, they’ve removed a lot of action from this episode. Thinking it over, this show is such a smaller truncated version of the last of us. There’s a grandeur and sense of awe to the LAST OF US game, that’s missing from the show. And that’s a shame. Did HBO just not have enough faith in this adaptation to spend more money on it??? Compared to GOT, or even HOUSE OF DRAGONS, this is so small. In episode 5, we missed out on a lot of the action with the waterfall and raging river, etc. That stuff was amazing and exciting! This just makes me nervous for season 2, as PART 2 is my favorite. Ellie’s journey is incredible.

I have a theory that one of the riders claimed Joel's rifle, Maria went to ask for it back and was told no by some law of the commune like "finders keepers" or w/e but in good faith was given Ellie's coat in trade. It's not 100% though because she was missing her own coat as well so don't know if that figures in somehow.

I also loved how they kept Joel the same in not telling people who knew Tess that she's dead. In the game he does the same with Frank tells her she's busy so she couldn't be there just like in this episode haha

You're telling me Tommy couldn't explain to Maria that Joel would think he's dead if he didn't check in? Maybe Tommy intentionally didn't radio Joel because he wants to be his own man and he found a new parental figure to coddle him in Maria.
I dont like what they did with tommy also their relationship kinda regressed at the start wich didnt make a lot of sense. I did like the colledge part. Sorry if im being too critical but i wasnt that big of a fan of the game either. Anyway fun fact the guy in the mask on the horse is the voice of joel in the game
