0:52 The horse does have a name! They never say it in the show, but I’m the game that horse’s name is Callus. Shimmer, the foal in episode 6, is Ellie’s horse in the second game
In the video game, The Last Of Us part 2, Ellie played the guitar and sang an accoustic version of "Take On Me" (the 80s song played during the escalator scene).
The brilliant thing about this part of the story being a flashback is that it recontextualizes a lot of earlier scenes: - In episode 2 when Tess asks Ellie, "no one is going to come after you right? mom, dad, boyfriend?" and Ellie responds with "I'm an orhpan, and uh.. no", it's reference to the fact that she had a girlfriend, not a boyfriend. - In episode 4 when Joel and Ellie talk about how it wasn't her first time she had to kill someone - now we know the "someone" was Riley, because they both waited to turn together, and Riley turned, but Ellie didn't, and so Ellie had to shoot Riley. This is why when Joel asks she says she didn't want to talk about it. - In episode 6 when Ellie and Joel have their big argument and Ellie pushes him and says, "everybody I have ever cared for has either died or left me" - it's another reference to Riley. There is this interesting dichotomy between Joel's daughter Sarah and Ellie. Joel tried to protect Sarah by keeping her sheltered from the violence around her, whereas he tries to protect Ellie by teaching her how to use a gun and be able to be violent back. That's because Ellie and Joel are actually more alike than they look at first glance - they are both survivors who have lost folks and closed themselves off and are paranoid as a result, and so tragically in a way, Joel is closer to Ellie in a way than he was with his own daughter, because Ellie is more like he is, which is tragic in it's own right. Regarding the every week is a movie thing, the game DOES play like that too. The game is made up of 13 chapters that take a combined total of around 15-18 hours or so to complete, and that got condensed into 9 episodes, so each episode of the show corresponds to 1-2 chapters in the game (more or less). When the game came out, it was praised for "playing like an interactive movie" which is partly why it's such a good fit for adapting to a show - the story and pacing of the game was already very cinematic in the way it was built. (it's also a great game for beginning gamers to try - the controls aren't too bad and there aren't a ton of options and the story progresses fairly linearly.) The game was originally just for the Sony PlayStation but they are releasing a version for Windows PCs in a month from now, which is SO brilliant to time that w/ the show's release. The game has already made around $2 billion since 2013 (putting it up in avengers level money) and after the show has been such the hit it has been, there's gonna be a huge wave of new players eager to try it out. Two more episodes for season 1, and oh man, hold on to your butts, that's all I'm saying, lol Cheers
And the Colonel comes through again with the breakdown!! We picked up on a few of the elements. Your take on Ellie vs Sarah's relationship to Joel was spot on! The surge will be ridiculous when the game is released on PC 🤯 We'll definitely give it a go!
You guys are actually amazing. Recently found you looking for reactions of people who didn’t play the game. Favorite game series by far. I exclusively only play narrative theme games, and I absolutely am stunned by the amount of things you guys pick up on. You guys don’t seem like huge gamers, but have you given thought to trying the 1st game out after the season finale to see all the differences (the changes are all great and add to the story l, not take away). Love that you catch a lot of the tiny things like the Ellie’s person she killed that she mentioned in KC is her first Love, Riley. Also, was scrolling through the comments and seeing you guys making a point to interact with every comment and reply, you guys deserve so many more subscribers! You’re content and effort is amazing!
Thanks for taking the time to write us Alec! You're right about us not being huge gamers 😂 We will definitely try it out though. The storyline is so amazing, we have to experience the original version. Our channel is fairly new so your feedback is greatly appreciated 🙏🏾
I love y'all. I wish you 20 million subscribers. Y'all are such a great, harmonic blend of appreciative, perceptive, entertaining, and infectious (especially with laughter). You don't overtalk especially over important parts where you miss it, and you're not silent through the reaction. You both are natural and come off very genuine, instead of putting on a "reactor" persona. Everything - love it. Again, keep up the great work. Here to watch y'all grow and grow!
Aww man thanks Austin!! We really appreciate you rooting for us and for the honest, positive feedback. We're reaction junkies at heart so this means alot. We just hit our 1st milestone yesterday 🙏🏾 On the road to 20M... let's go!!!
21:42 this is why the emotional parts hit so much harder. The context of the entire episode (backstory) + all the episodes leading up to the end makes it so friggin good. I started crying when Riley showed her bite, and then burst into tears when Joel held Ellie's hand. The desperation in her trying so hard to save someone she cares about hit me harder than it needed to... Lovin your reactions once again!
All these backstories are incredible and crucial. Really helps with understanding the development of each character. Without Riley's experience, Ellie wouldn't have the fight to save Joel. One thing was for sure...she was NOT leaving him behind. Thanks for tuning in Ashen!
Not many people know, but in Mortal Kombat II, Baraka and Mileena are lovers. It's just a coincidence that Ellie and Riley chose to fight as them at the arcade. Whether the creators knew it or not, their gameplay did showcase a grim foreshadowing.
Very interesting thoughts the both of you have there! I especially found it very interesting that you were able to think of "Take on Me" being an 80's song, which, as the show implied, meant trouble. I've rewatched this episode a few times now (as well as have watched other reactors' take on the episode) and you're the only one who mentioned that. Brilliant!
Thanks for taking the time to write us Daniel! We love to look out for the hidden gems...and this series is FULL of them! Glad you enjoyed our reaction 🙏🏾
In the game when you play as Joel or Ellie, when you're using your flashlight it flickers on and off. You have to shake your controller to get it to come on again and it makes the same sound as it did in the scene when Ellie is shaking her flashlight trying to get it to work again. I thought that was a cool addition. Great reaction, love you guys! :)
I just want to make a small correction to your commentary. That was not a "clicker" in the mall. That was a stalker. There are different stages of infected persons. #1) Runner #2) Stalker #3) Clicker #4) Bloater (Hulk one in Kansas City) #5) Shambler (have not seen yet) #6) The Rat King (not seen yet). Just FYI.. All infected under stalkers do not have use of their eyes. Instead they use echo location. Hence the clicking sounds👍👍
The moment where cut back to Joel and he’s shivering/his teeth are chattering broke my heart. He’s probably cold because they’re in that freezing basement, and I imagine you can feel cold from loss of blood/a fever from infection…wish Ellie had given Joel her winter hat or an extra blanket. I was thinking, “Can we please bundle Pedro up a little more…he’s chilly!” 😢🥶
Great reaction. Glad you enjoy them so much. Bella Ramsey is tiny. She is 5'1"and not getting any taller since she is already 19. It throws everything off. Her hand is so small in Pedro's. Everyone on this show are incredible actors.
I enjoy your thoughtful reactions! So many misdirections throughout this episode. For those of us who don't know the game, it was easy to imagine that Riley wasn't around because she was sent to the Altanta QZ. But, no. Last week's episode left us with Ellie telling an unconscious Joel that she doesn't know what to do. Twice in that episode, she tells Joel that she's f***ed without him. This week's theme is of Ellie repeatedly being offered two choices (Joel: stay and wait for me to die or leave me to die), two paths (Cpt Kwang: channel your frustrations toward work your way up or let them control you and keep you in the bottom rung); two options (Riley: easy way or ride it out). In the last scene with Riley, Ellie asks for an Option 3. When we return to the present, Ellie identifies Option 3: It's to stay with Joel and for the first time, really step up and take the lead. First by finding a way to nurse him back to health while providing food and shelter for them both. Haven't played or seen the games and the downloadable content (DLC) from which Ellie and Riley's story was taken. But when we think of what might have happened after Riley and Ellie's last scene, we're know that the Fireflies likely go to the mall to relieve Riley that morning (for her relocation to Atlanta). In episode 1, Marlene tells Ellie that she ordered her people not to shoot Ellie and that she knew Ellie's mother. Were it not for some yet unknown connection with Ellie's mother that I expect them to reveal before the season is over, Marlene probably wouldn't have considered waiting to see if Ellie might not turn-that is *very* interesting. So Marlene likely went to the mall with some of her people and walked into one of two scenarios: (1) a broken Ellie with a discharged gun (or her switchblade) in her hand and a deceased Riley who turned before the Fireflies arrived; or (2) Riley in the process of turning and Ellie standing in the middle to keep the FF from killing her, but in the end either she or the Fireflies have to do the inevitable. Heartwrenching!
Thanks for watching Amelia! Love your take on all the options presented to Ellie in the last episode. Haven't played the game either... but hearing that HBO is doing a great job staying true to the storyline while interjecting many unexpected twists & turns. Appreciate you taking the time to write us!
@Beauty and the Beard, 15:24 I got you covered! Q: What do you call an Alligator in a vest? A: An InVESTigator! investigator! 21:38 The Last of Us team don't miss! HBO assembled the perfect team and they chose the best actors for EVERY single role! Every actor they came on screen used their time well. Even Bryan! We have two episode left and you just know that this series is going to stick the landing. I can't recall a series that was this good from start to finish. A few reactions you go, you asked how good is this game, well, it as good as the series we're watching. The series has made changes, but they're mostly expansions of what we got in the game, well, things that are very much video game like, the leveling up aspect and what not, was cut from this story for sure, but this series has done an amazing job of telling the games story with very few deviations. It's weird, really, how is it that HBO can get a video this right while everyone else has missed the mark by a mile? We can't keep blaming the movie format since all games aren't as deep as this. I suppose part of it is HBO doing the right thing by brining the story creator on board and listening to him! I don't recall other adaptations doing that, but again other video game stories aren't really this deep--you'd think that Hollywood would be able to make a bad or mediocre story good or great, but that hasn't been the case.
Always appreciate you looking out for us! This landing HBO is about to stick...man is it going to shake the world!! Never felt this way about a show before. They definitely did themselves a huge favor by working with the game's story creator and also music director.
Beautiful episode. All the emotional nuances they can add with camera work and live action is making my heart swell. Every episode is crushing it. I still love game but this show is doing it good

It's so great to watch reactors who GET IT when it comes to backstory and how it directly impacts the current plot!
It can't be ALL action all the time...we need some context once in a while. This was a great episode for Ellie's backstory! Glad you enjoyed us Tommy!
So few do, but these 2 have really got everything so far :)
Man, The Beard picked up on so many intricacies of the story! I'm so glad you appreciate the non-action parts just as much!

Bro stop blowing my mind with your observations! You picking up on the 80s song on the escalator! I never caught that. The song also has a connection to the second game, but associating it with the radio codes never occurred to me. That's such a nice double layer by the show writers because the radio codes wasn't in the game, they added that to the show. So for me when I first saw that scene on the escalator I just saw it as a nod to the 2nd game.
Thanks man!! We're always looking out for subtle hints and this series was FULL of them...
They are not all clickers. This one was a runner. Thats stage one. They can still see, and hear. Clickers are the ones with the split open heads so their eyes are gone and they do the clicking noise to audio locate, like bats or sonar. A stage further in the infection then becomes the bloaters.
In the second game there is yet another evolution but i don't think we'll see this in season one, or at all in the series as its a bit far fetched. Think that one is called the rat king where the infection growth on several former humans grow together and the become one weird big infected creature.
But yeah, most of the infected that we have seen so far are just runners, or infected, but not clickers those are the fuckers we saw in that war museum where Tess was bit.
Thanks for clearing that up for us. We have a viewer mention a stalker also...ones that hide and lunge at you in the game.
In the game, Ellie names the horse "Callus"
Thanks Richie! Appreciate you!
The take on me song with the escalator is a bit of a tease to something with the 2nd game. But yes the song choices means alot to the show writers
