    Awesome video and investigation!!!! I love how this crash is showing the best of the internet and how it can be used as a collaborative tool to solve a problem. Every day additional videos are release the build on others. For those who did not hear you list the suspected crash coordinates its 34 deg 48min 53.61s north, 119 deg 57min 40.37s west. There is a good chance I can fly there this week, find the crash site, and try and recreate the landing options he had available to him. Will depend on weather.

      I exchanged emails with the US forest service yesterday regarding the wreckage... I recieved a very generic/vague reply to the effect that they have lots plane crashes every year in the forest service system...UNTIL... I emailed back with gps location...
      They got right back with me saying that they are aware of it and investigation is going on now.

      @@scooby1961 Good question, I am knowledgeable about maps and hiking, but not so much about aviation but after playing around in Google Earth and looking at the viewpoints I think he was between 8000 and 11000 feet. There is another youtube video where someone did a Microsoft Flight sim recreation of the accident that might give more clues about the height.

      If you do fly the crash site, make a video! Also, there is a hiking trail along the ridge just above the crash site (Hurricane Deck Trail). A competent hiker could hike from the Manzana Schoolhouse Campsite at the end of the road and likely make it down to the plane and back within a day. I wonder if someone in the area will attempt this.

      After seeing the placement of the road, I assume he picked Bald Mountain as a waypoint to do the jump. It's a few miles from the wilderness border, so pretty safe for an aircraft trimmed to spiral as a single engine aircraft would be by default with no P-factor happening. Can guarantee he won't drop the plane on someone's property by mistake, but can be close enough to a riverbed leading to a road to minimize the risk of getting lost.

    At 5:48 the prop is windmilling, this would restart the engine! His pulling back on the yoke was to stall the prop, but not enough to send the plane into a stall/spin. What's with the apparent aux fuel tank on the left wing strut with a line going to the engine compartment? The loose hose inside the cabin suggests he had disconnected the wing tank. No electrical system yet he had a headset on? Did he have a handheld radio? and if so, did it depart the aircraft with him? What was the cylindrical thing inside his jacket just below his chest harness? What was his glide radius? and many more questions as well

      @@avocadoflight I heard that he had chartered one, not that it was successful... I'm looking for a primary source as well on that. My GA channels are bursting with fruit flavor on this but most is just the relative stupidity of bailing out of a classic aircraft with a great glide profile and stall speed around the blinding speed of your average moped. This is to GA what someone finding a well-maintained Model A Ford, loading it with Tannerite, and remote control driving it through traffic while shooting at it near a playground would be to car guys. According to the A&P mechanic who used to service it, he wasn't low on gas and it's not like California has issues with fires getting out of control
      ...
      The fact he didn't start a fire and/or kill someone is luck. I'm glad the only casualty was the plane. But, it was a really nice classic plane that was mechanically sound and airworthy at time of sale. It's not just horrible for GA's image, it's the loss of a perfectly good aircraft used by many people to train on in the years before this assbasket bought it.

    Nice video there, Davin! Great analysis. I think you've got it exactly right. Using your numbers of where the plane "landed," and plotting them on an FAA sectional chart, we can see that the crash site is about 13 miles north of the Santa Inez Airport (as Scooby pointed out), which is out in a big valley. From 8000 or 9000 feet, that little plane might not have been able to glide all the way to the runway, but it sure could have made it back to lower, flatter, more hospitable terrain. But ol' Trev didn't even try. Ah well...

I have looked at site on my satellite imagery account and unfortunately the pixel resolution is too low to make out any aircraft. I am not in USA and I have tried a few public aerial databases with no luck finding coverage around this time. I would suggest try asking your network if anyone knows a Surveyor or Engineer who may have a commercial provider account who can help out.

    You might be interested in this comment about how to determine the location and altitude of the plane: Ryan McGowan
    "If you have Photoshop or any image editor and Google Earth, you can do it. I'll give you some instructions, but first, the theory:
    If you stood at the intersection of lines on the ground radiating away from you like wheel spokes and took photos in any direction, every radial line would appear as vertical lines in the image. It seems counterintuitive that converging lines appear parallel, but if a line didn't appear vertical in an image, the camera is not directly over that line. Think of looking down the sights of a rifle. If you are inline with the sights, the rifle appears directly below and vertical in the image of your field of view. Inversely, if you drew vertical lines on an image, where they converge is the viewpoint of the camera. I drew the lines in Photoshop and mapped them out on Google Earth. All the lines intersected within 60 feet, and if you discard the outliers, you are less than 50 feet. There's some error due to lens distortion, and for that you need to model the camera with software, and get the real-world XYZ coordinates, etc. As for vertical, that's a little trickier, but already knowing the horizontal position, I can just use parallax and find the upper and lower limits to when middle ground ridges obscured background objects, and averaged the two. I could see clearly on Google Earth that 9,500 feet exposed background objects not available in the image, and 9,300 feet obscured them. So somewhere in the middle of that is the actual altitude of the camera. So:
    In Photoshop: Draw a line along the horizon. Draw a series of lines 90° to the horizon across the image.
    In Google Earth, using the line tool, draw lines on the ground that pass through the same points as the lines in the image. Extend them long enough to intersect. The lines that are at the furthest ends of the photograph have the worst distortion, so give them less weight. They will actually converge behind the camera.
    For the altitude in aerial images, the earth is relatively flat in most places, to it's a bit trickier using simple geometric rules. It's really easy on ground-level photos with buildings: The intersection of the horizon line with any point on the image is going to be at the same altitude. Horizon lines are where level parallel lines converge.
    Look for something in the image to give you parallax and raise or lower the viewpoint until the parallax matches. That's easy. Without two object to reference to for parallax, you could assume that the camera has about the same angle measurements per pixel horizontally as it does vertically and do some trig to derive your camera location, but without a calibrated camera, that won't be very accurate.
    If you want to get more accurate, you get a program like Photomodeler and take a few frames. Now you are using stereoscopy and getting very accurate locations."

    Where did he land his parachute ( in the video ).. the single strangest thing for me is him by sheer coincidence jumping directly over the most suitable place for miles to land a parachute for miles, but then choosing not only to land in a bush up a mountain, but also manages to find the supppsed wreck.
    My theory is he jumped directly above a perfect landing area becuase that is where he landed.
    The rest is a production. 2 pilots, one stays in plane. Possibly also the footage of the plane doing a fly-by below Trevor taken from either another jump on another day, or from a paramotor or drone

    • @devoidbmx1
      @devoidbmx1  2 года назад +2

      To me it seems likely he landed his parachute on the ridge near the plane which looks like quite a bad landing spot. It looks like he followed the plane down to the crash site. Landing in the flat river bed would have been easiest but climbing back up to the crash site would have been hard. Some people have noted he could have tried to also land his plane on the dry river bed.

    • @pylon500

      Pretty sure he was the only one onboard when he bailed out. The Taylorcraft is a very stable aircraft and quite capable of gliding along on it's own.
      In normal flight, the effects of the engine would tend to make the plane turn left, that plus his weight in the left seat would also create a slight left turn, as such the aircraft would have a slight right turn trim built into it so it would fly straight under normal circumstances. Now with the engine not running, and his weight missing from the left seat, the plane would set up a slow continuous turn to the right. Also as most of his body mass is slightly behind the centre of gravity, when he jumps out, the aircraft would tend to go slightly nose down. Once it gains speed from the dive it would level out a a bit and glide fairly quickly down, but not a screaming vertical dive.

    • @vlnow
      @vlnow 2 года назад +4

      @@pylon500 with zero weight on board a slow porpoising turning descent, assuming only one jump occured, how did this plane end up below Trevor after Trevor took a minimum 20 second delay ( maybe longer ) putting him at least 3000ft below the plane ( likey more if we add descent lost during parachute opening stage ) ? Not only did the plane end up catching up to be below him ( despite his parachute descending too ) but happened to land within his glide cone so that he supposedly saw it land and chose to kand fairly near it.
      Non of this adds up. Possible ? Nothing is impossible...but its alll just vert very very unlikely.
      Unless we assume a fully staged event with a team and a script and locations. And a second pilot.
