  • (Please Subscribe!) UPDATE HERE with an Aviation Attorney: • Does Trevor Jacob Need... Right before Christmas, Trevor Jacob released a video entitled “I Crashed my Plane” in which he claimed engine trouble while over the Las Padres mountains near the Los Angeles basin. Which was fine, because he was wearing a sport parachute. In the days since, Trevor has turned off comments on the video as the aviation community overwhelming are calling this a stunt Trevor pulled to garner views and attention.
    The FAA has confirmed an investigation is underway, and we’ve done some of our own investigation and have some new information-like who really owned the plane.

    As a pilot, even if I were wearing a chute, I would never leave an aircraft in flight unless it were on fire, breaking up or if a rattlesnake suddenly slithered over my shoulder. A gliding, pilot-less aircraft is a danger to other craft and those on the ground. What if the crashing plane had started a fire on the ground in the very dry Los Padres NF? I am a retired pilot (military and civilian) who has personal knowledge of a similar situation that occurred in the 80's. A former military instructor pilot was fiddling with the engines on Army helicopters with the apparent hope that the engine would fail in flight and that he would save the day by making an autorotative landing and then be given the Army's "Broken Wing" award. He went to jail instead. What I'm hinting at is that this wouldn't be the first time a stunt like this has been pulled.

    • @paulkainer269
      @paulkainer269 2 года назад

      @@beeble2003 look at the basics.
      The basics of a pilots training is not to abandon the plane as first thing. Its like the last thing pilots are suppose to do. Its a wandering missle unmanned. Secondly there is premeditated actions because pilots I know never wear a parachute. Especially this type of aircraft. And even in his own videos you look he does not have a parachute. Thirdly no pilots I know or met have fire extinguisher taped to their legs under their pant legs. This screams premeditated event planning. Someone else noted engine changes in the plane from a comparison of photos. All and all this prank was reckless and shines a very bad light on anyone that is a pilot or trying to become a pilot. It was calculated by other pilots that his elevation and his type of aircraft had ample ability to glide to a much safer landing for the plane and for him. The fact this guy basically left a vehicle non piloted and jumped showed no regard to his training as a pilot because you are NOT suppose to do that, and anyone else that could of been a victim of this crash. Pilot training is to carry the plane to the ground with least damage to anyone. Think of it this way, perhaps major airlines should make their pilots fly with parachute to their back and fire extinguisher taped to their legs and if there is anything wrong with the plane they just jump out and parachute to safety while the plane flies by itself and crashes into a moutain a building or perhaps the ocean with no regard to what damage the plane itself can cause or the people on board. Think about that. Would you want to board a plane knowing the pilots are wearing parachute and fire extinguisher for their safety in the situation they have to jump from their plane?
      I dont think I would board that plane and most people with any common sense would not board that plane. I do not want to be anywhere this so called pilot is flying because of this stunt. He is unsafe. And for quite some range. So nope not interested in his so called pilot skills. Or anyone that wants to copy cat his performance. This was a stunt. And it could of put others in jeopardy. Yes it was an area that is not commonly visited by people. But there are people that visit that area. He is reckless. He has disregard for others and his training as a pilot. They train you with engine out situations so you can pick the best options. He failed his pilot instructor with this actions. He did the opposite of what pilots are suppose to do in that situation. Plus that plane was not airworthy. So why was he flying it?? The more I dig up on this guy the more angry I get.

    My main issue with this crash is the duty of a pilot to minimize risk to people on the ground. A parachute is useful in GA for skydivers ONLY. If you're the pilot flying it is your duty to see to it that your aircraft makes it back on the ground with as little damage to persons or property as possible. This isn't a freak accident. Every pilot is trained to handle an engine-out. This pilot neglected that duty and should not be allowed the privilege to continue operating as PIC given his lack of decision making ability.

He acted recklessly by putting people on the ground at risk as well as a serious fire risk to an already compromised area. I was just entering a radar downwind in the pattern to land on 30R, at 10,000 ft. His initial radio call went something like,' Cessna xxxxx, we've had engine failure, and we are going down.' I turned to my First Officer and confirmed what I had just heard. Approach control was very, very professional and handled their required transmissions accordingly. Because the illumination that night was basically nil, I gave little hope for a successful outcome. Low and behold, a few minutes later we heard the 206 pilot calling us, asking if we could relay to approach that they had landed on a dirt road in the middle of an agricultural area, a farmer's field. I replied something like, 'Well done!' and relayed the fact that all occupants were safely on the ground. An amazing feat of flying and keeping your cool, to say the least.

    He changed the engine from a lycoming to a continental, and painted the valve covers red - if he did it himself he violated a FAR. You argue the airplane had sufficient fuel. However, the gas is measured with a float and a stick that rises out of the tank, which the pilot views through the windshield. Jacob could have "stuck" the fuel measuring rod in the full position - in fact, it looks like it never measures anything but "full". the FAA should immediately issue an evidence preservation letter and subpoena all videos, as well as interview anybody at the airport where Jacob kept the plane.

    Hey Dan, enjoy your channel. As a former pro certified jumpmaster with thousands of jumps, a (non-licensed) pilot, an action sport junky and a videographer, IMQO there is no doubt that this was a planned and reckless stunt. His quick exit with no attempt to restart and then all that time in freefall while videoing were the key tells for me. The other things (extinguishers, etc) were icing on the cake. I've been forced to jump from several planes due to emergency situations such as engine outs, engine fires and premature deployments, and there is nothing relaxed about it. The fact that he spotted (at 1:28 in your video) - spotting is where you look out your door straight down to be sure you are over your landing zone, then burned through precious altitude in freefall, altitude he (as you pointed out) would have wanted to find a safe place to land, were obvious clues. Also, in general a sport parachute rig is very different from a pilot rig (more like a BASE rig) and he was clearly wearing a sport rig. And while he could have certainly been using a sport rig as is bailout rig, they suck to fly in and If he "always wears a parachute now", he would have likely spent a little money and gotten a more comfortable, safer, task specific rig. It was 100% BS! and (again, IMO) he should be brought up on charges. Good to see the FAA involved and happy to see my tax dollars at work.

    About the "wrong chute" thing, it should also be mentioned that the rescue/emergency chute normally worn by pilots is 99.9% of the time of a type that uses a big spring to deploy the pilot chute, causing a much faster deployment of the main canopy once the ripcord is pulled, either by the handle or in some cases by a static line connected to the aircraft. Because of this they can be used at much lower altitudes than a standard skydiving rig, which is more built for a comfortable deployment from terminal velocity.
    I fly gliders in western Europe (NL and DE mostly) and here in glider flying wearing a parachute is much more common. Keep in mind that simply by the nature of glider flight we get a lot more "proximity" flying compared to motor planes and it's not unusual to be flying with 4 or more gliders under the same cloud. Mid-air collisions have happened unfortunately. And not having an engine means that sometimes the safest way down is under a canopy. However, even when flying with a chute, that is an option you should only ever use if there's no other way. You can get injured on trying to land a damaged plane, but you could just as easily get injured trying to land under a parachute.

    • @rajeke
      @rajeke 2 года назад +18

      You are correct about the chutes. I jump myself.
      The pilot chutes (funny name not related to actual pilot) are spring loaded. When you pull the cord, the sealed lead seal is removed from the pack and the spring is located in the pilot chute. It is usually located inside a free bag which is the outer bag containing the parachute.
      This was a full ass rig. This dude prepped for this because full rigs ARE EXTREMELY UNCOMFORTABLE. They’re chill to wear to jump, but to fly with one on. First off that’s insane. Your pin is exposed to rubbing by sitting against the seat.

      In the case of a static line, a spring isn't needed. The parachute is housed in a bag attached to the line attached to the aircraft (hence, "static line") so that when the jumper... err, jumps (hence, "jumper"), the parachute deploys immediately.

He jumped out at like 20 feet or something and the plane crashed and exploded. The guy was extremely fortunate to survive that shit and not hurt anyone or anything else in the process, and still be able to walk and talk about it and continue on. I am not a pilot but my dad is/was so I've followed some channels over the years like Trent Palmer and Mr. aviation101. Trevor's video set off so many red flags for me as a non-pilot I can only imagine what pilots see.
    I did a bit of research on that tcraft and then looked at maps. That tcraft has very very good gliding stats. The crash was less than 8 miles from farm land to the west and less than 12 to the east. The plane should have made it no problem. The dry riverbed below him was also perfect. I don't know the wind conditions on the datly of the crash but I'm doubting it was anything unusual. I hope they throw the book at him. He needs to be punished hard for this.
    The insight from Max is incredible. I had wondered if that had electric start or not. In no way am I defending Jacob here but he is one to panic easily. So him not knowing how to restart the plane in the air could have caused some panic. But everything else screams intentional.

      The only certified, non student Trevor Jacob I found on airmen search was a private pilot certified 2020 who had a 1st class medical too. Seems unnecessary and odd if it is him and he has that medical history.

    Yea, I only flew paragliders. And we have emergency chutes. Was in a couple of spirals, frontal collapses, and stalls. I never thought of pulling my reserve once in these situations. The only thing on my mind is to recover the main wing while keeping an eye on my attitude.
    Deploying a reserve chute is an extreme situation and the last course of action after you have tried everything else and there is not any more time for recovery. Even on ultralight paraglider types of aircraft.
    If my lift surfaces are intact, and I have any chances of doing so, I'm landing that thing.
    Landing > falling.

    First time watching this channel and I am quite impressed in your coverage. Thank you for the insight. As a low time pilot myself I find his apparent negligence incredibly disappointing. It looked like there were many possible landing points in the video. Watching another video covering this a comment was made that he may have purposefully not shown footage from behind the aircraft's flight path. Could there have been a field in gliding distance? It certainly looked like there might have been a field in the distance in one shot.
    I would be most interested to see if we get extended raw footage as you mentioned, because the released footage shows no attempt to restart the engine or assess landing areas. Another video I watched showed his previous plane with tundra tires and that makes me assume he has some experience in landing on unimproved runways or off field locations.
    Either way, I am very sad to see that poor Taylor craft destroyed.

    I’m not a pilot but I found your presentation extremely interesting, and I learned a few things. I hope the FAA gets to the bottom of the incident, one way or another. If it was staged he’s very fortunate there was no fire, and no one was injured. So many people would’ve appreciated that little plane. Now I’m thinking of Speedbird 009, the 747 that lost all engines after flying through volcanic ash, and which managed to glide to a safe landing. Seems that little plane could have glided somewhere and landed.

      Thanks for watching! The Speedbird case was really interesting (though they were able to restart some engines for a powered emergency landing). Of course, this T Craft might have been able to restart. 😉

      @@TakingOff I think that the best way to investigate intent in this incident may not be through his actions documented in the video, but through his acquisition of Ridge wallet as a sponsor. Mr Jacob's channel focuses on stunts, and garnering a sponsor to fly from point A to B while spreading his friends ashes wouldn't seem likely - the sponsor was probably looking for something that would gather a lot of views. Ridge wallet might have some information on this incident, where Mr. Jacob's clearly defined his intent to sell his video as an advertisement.

    Two updates that really don't help his case!
    1) In his original video that he uploaded, he showed the view from the wing seconds before the engine cut off. You could clearly see the door closed with the handle pointed straight down. A few seconds later he shows the camera in the back as the engine starts to cut off, and the door is already opened with the handle clearly turned towards the back of the plane. He literally opened the door to jump out before the engine was ever off. Likely making sure he could escape before he powered off his engine.
    2) He has cut about 4 minutes from the video he posted online. It used to be 16:41 long and is now 12:53 long. Part of this cut is his sponsorship, as well as the wing shot of his door being closed moments before the engine shut off. Good thing I already saved an offline version of the old version and forwarded it to the FAA :)

    One quick thing: Although I completely agree with everything you said and that this is almost certainly staged, he did mention bringing water on the plane, which he used as an excuse to hike back to the plane. Even though I think the main reason was recovering the footage.

    Also, in the previous owners pictures you can clearly see a radio antenna on the belly of the nose so this plane was most definitely fitted with a way for him to make radio contact. He just wanted people to think he relied on a portable radio but reality is he had his radio Jack neatly tucked into his parachute straps. So he very well could have went back to the plane crash and attempted to make radio communication to call for help.
