If it was really was what happened then he should post his evidence, but the lack of any response is just incriminating in itself.

I've been a flight instructor for 37 years and I owned a 1940 Taylorcraft BC-65, the same model as this except with a Continental 65 instead of the Lycoming. It looks extremely staged to me. During engine failure drill I always teach aviate..get to the best glide, navigate..find someplace to land, communicate..declare a mayday (although he may not have any more than a hand held radio since he probably doesn't have an electrical system) then try for a restart. Not a lot to do on the Taylorcraft other than make sure the fuel is on, carb heat is on and the mags are hot. The only time I've ever worn a chute is when teaching aerobatics or soaring and they are very uncomfortable in my opinion and it looks like he just barely fit in the plane while wearing a skydiving rig. Also, it looks like the top of the mountain to the left of the plane just before it crashes would be very landable. The whole scenario just looks fake to me.

It's not just one thing though. When you look at the totality of the incident and add up all the coincidences and errors, you can only come to one conclusion. 1. He buys a really cheap plane and tells the seller "I am going to do something special with this". 2. He has or has previously owned a bush plane, but ignored the numerous landing options open to an experienced bush plane pilot. 3. He has a go pro with a good view of the controls and panel but does not show any footage. 4. At the moment the engine quits, his first priority is to grab a selfie stick and camera and start recording. 5. Manages to video everything quite clearly but has no video of the car or people that rescue him. 6. Why is his door open BEFORE the engine quits. 7. Constantly mentions "I always wear a parachute, I always wear a parachute", it seems to be an alibi as to why he happened to have one on despite previous videos showing he doesn't usually wear them. 8. He seemed to be in an awful hurry to open the silk, despite having the altitude to try a mayday call on his cell? at the same time attempting an airstart. .Occams razor, or in simple terms, If quacks like a duck, walks like a duck and looks like a duck......it's probably a duck.

Well said my new RUclips friend. I am 30 hours into getting my PPL and my CFI is always drilling the mantra into my head. Aviate, navigate and then communicate. While flying he will all the sudden say “okay, the engine just blew up and the prop has stopped. What are you going to do?” And he’s listening for “…I feather the prop, establish my best glide, find a place I can land, head for it, then call in a mayday…” He’s always ambushing me like that. But he has me thinking of that stuff as I am flying. I found myself flying straight over a highway and was thinking if I had to there’s the perfect runway. Watch out for those power lines and the upcoming bridge… my CFI had a meltdown when we watched the Trevor video. Like you he called out all the red flags. And he used it as a training tool for me! Surprised he didn’t bill me. He kept pausing it and asking what I would have done each step. Anyways, loved your take on this and liked and subbed

  • @whoever6458

So I'm a biologist and I grew up locally in this general area. I'm not a pilot because I'm broke but I've loved aviation all my life and even I saw the absolutely negligence in his decisions as the pilot of this aircraft. Anyway, once he lands, he has literally jumped into my area of professional knowledge so that I can tell you that the supposed hike out videos are taken in at least two different locations, both based on the vegetation in the area and based on the fact that I've actually personally hiked in some of those same areas and those areas are painfully close to Cajon pass.
GPS also works in those areas and I know from personal experience because I've used it to track my workouts. Cell service comes from towers and can be disrupted if you find yourself in an area that doesn't have a direct line of sight to any cell tower (it's any cell tower that will transmit your 911 call even if your own carrier doesn't have service in that area). GPS comes from space so one can get it pretty damn well in areas where one can still see the sky (and very often everywhere else too). GPS was specifically developed for the military in situations where they wouldn't be able to connect with an antenna for line of sight communication and information. I have literally be talking on my phone and had it cut out due to lack of signal and checked my GPS, which was still showing where I was. If you have a phone with a charge, you have your way out of the wilderness.
Then, don't drink stagnant water no matter what sorts of lifeforms you see living in the water. Tadpoles find some water-borne human pathogens to be gourmet delights and there's no guarantee that they've eaten all those microbes just because you see some tadpoles. If you have to drink wild water, drink from the fastest flowing water you can find and absolute do not drink from a stagnant pool of water or even at the edge of a fast-flowing water way. Literally try to get the water that is itself flowing the fastest but you still might get sick (and I kind of hope this guy did get sick, simply because his video is so very fucked up in so many ways). He claimed to be some kind of safety first, survivalist type in that he had a parachute, but he didn't have helmet (not much to protect?) and something that would have been much smaller than all that crap would have been to have some kind of water purification. You can get little vials of chlorinating tablets that would have fit in his pocket better than his phone. There are these things that I think are called Life Straws that you can use to drink wild water through because they have filters in them. There are water bottles like that too (note that one should not just buy the cheap Brita ones but ones from the camping section designed for drinking water out of a stream or other source of wild water). Also, please realize that you ought to start finding and/or making a shelter long before it even starts to get dark because all the predatory animals can see much better in low light than you can. It's not super likely that a wild animal would attack you for the purposes of eating you but, if you happened to stumble your dumb ass in the relative darkness into a place that they see as threatening to them, they will attack you to protect their home just like any other kind of animal including humans.
This guy's supposed plane emergency is such bullshit and I hope they revoke his license. He was too high to know if there was anyone hiking below on the mountain that could have been killed by his plane which, once he left it, he really didn't even know where it would end up crashing. Then there's the insensitivity of crashing a perfectly good airplane whose engine seems to have restarted again after its painfully stupid pilot bailed out of it. A lot of us have lost damn near everything, almost including our own lives for some of us, during this pandemic. There are enough Americans who know what I'm talking about that I shouldn't have to go into it in detail but probably more than half of us are struggling to just get enough of these stupid green pieces of paper to survive. These green pieces of paper for which one can be exchanged for another and a person breaks even but lives lost can never be replaced. To see someone who is both too rich and too stupid to appreciate that it's insensitive for someone who could first afford to become a pilot without going to the military, could afford not one but two airplanes, and then to see such a rich chucklefuck waste the airplane for sure and hopefully also his pilot's license??? Well, it's just hard to take that level of bullshit, particularly at this time in history. I'm not one to condemn people really but I'm also not one to keep my mouth shut about unnecessary stupidity, especially when it's dangerous (if it's not dangerous, I might laugh under other historical circumstances).
That riverbed right under where he chicken out of flying a plane looks big enough to land a fucking 747 on (although I'm sure its landing gear would have at least some objection to the softness of what is almost certainly a pretty sandy terrain). If he wants to jump out of planes, that's great, but leave the piloting to someone else in that case. Everything about his video is completely and senselessly stupid. If the dude is reading this, sorry bro, but you should at least learn some more shit about things if you're going to try to do a video like this for clicks. This could have been done so that it wasn't an obvious fake, even though it still would have been egregious considering how many of your fellow citizens are struggling to afford to feed themselves, pay their rent/mortgage (and maybe that's why you needed clicks but, still, the rest of us are told to just get another job and no compassion is given to us).

As a student pilot on a solo night flight I had the fortunate experience of discovering that a plane will absolutely nearly land itself. Being night in my area the air was totally calm. In this particular case I was instructed to make a straight in approach. Once I intersected the glidepath and trimmed for approach I realized that the plane was staying dead on the PAPI with no control or power inputs from me whatsoever. I had two fingers lightly on the yoke and my feet were hovering over the pedals and the plane literally flew itself to the runway until i had to flare. I think if i was rendered unconscious during the approach I would have walked (or limped) away from the plane landing itself. It was a 152 by the way.

Based on that alone, I think he was trying to prevent the aircraft from gliding off into somewhere with people. So, why?
Had he trimmed for best glide, gone though some emergency procedures but nothing was successful, and then trimmed it into the ground to minimize the crash radius, I would think it was an actual accident.
Instead, he pulled it way back with the trim fighting him hard while slowing down over a soccer field sized drop zone.
It also sounds like the engine restarted on its own during the no-pilot (if there ever was one) segment.

Simple, no airmanship whatsoever. If I were the insurance carrier, I would not pay this out. Thanks John for your bringing this to the forefront. You do not have to be a pilot to see the errors committed. He should be having a talk with a lot of federal and state authorities.

It is interesting that he conveniently had a GoPro turned on attached to his hand to capture him opening the door before he jumped and views of him below the plane. If you are flying to Mammoth why would you have the GoPro on your hand already. The camera wouldn't be needed until you were about to the paragliding to spread the ashes. This is obviously a staged crash and I hope the FAA grounds him forever and throws the book at him. He is extremely luck a fire wasn't started.

As someone who can't qualify for a medical or afford pilot training but would love to do so it makes me so mad to see someone throw away an aircraft and his pilot privileges just to get a bunch of views on RUclips. That was a thing I think I remember my flight instructor telling me (a very long time ago), 'If you're having trouble controlling the aircraft, lighten up on the controls and let the airplane stabilize itself. Anyway, I'm not going to be nice to this guy, he murdered a beautiful antique airplane for a stupid stunt. He made no attempt to save the aircraft. Now that I've seen this video (like 20 times or so), if I found him dangling from a cliff, without a parachute, I think I'd turn and walk away.

One important thing I’d like to add which I haven’t seen elsewhere is he actually tries to recommend pilots do this as well. As in wear a parachute and be ready to flee the plane. IMO this is incredibly irresponsible as a pilot as we have to ensure the safety of ourselves and our passengers but also innocent people on the ground. Abandoning the airplane in my opinion is incredibly selfish as where it eventually crashes is all up to luck. Less likely for anyone to get hurt in this situation as it looks very isolated but to broadly recommend it makes me sick to my stomach (not that any true pilot would be dumb enough to listen I’d hope)

  • @nick.simmer

I've been tuning up my skills with a commercial checkride eminent. I would have embraced the challenge of landing that aircraft. I strongly feel like everyone; even at the private pilot level, should spend time gliding their airplanes all the way to the ground. The power off 180 accuracy landings are a real skill and confidence builder with regard to energy management and engine out operations. In the case of this pilot, my judgement is that he stopped flying the aircraft even while the engine was still running and then when he jumped out, the lives of anyone and anything down below were suddenly in danger. As pilots, we must be better about where we take these airplanes. I truly wish I would have been in the right seat of that aircraft when he jumped out, because I would have loved the chance to keep everyone on the ground and the aircraft safe. Nice video! No complaints here. By the way, did you ever get your wind indicators sorted out on your 275's?

Still waiting to hear from Garmin about a software update. They have watched the video and aren't happy about it. I used to require my students take an engine failure from altitude all the way down to a landing on grass before I soloed them (they would most likely not be landing on concrete in an emergency). They always seemed to appreciate that maneuver. It gave them a sense of accomplishment (and some added confidence). Good luck on your Commercial check ride!

    • @coldstreams

True. When I was a student we practiced, practiced, practiced and practiced engine out procedures some more - did numerous simulated approaches to farmer's fields, clearings in the woods, and even had one unintentional engine outage on take off. These lessons were valuable as I once lost an engine while on final approach. I'd been taught to keep my approaches slightly high - just in case - and made an uneventful engine out landing and coasted off the runway to keep it clear. Re-started the engine after clear of the runway. Maintenance later found a defect in the carburetor. The point is - this is a skill drilled into student pilots; Trevor showed little evidence he'd learned anything. (And yes, I just subscribed - good content here!)

Yeah, my take on his behavior with the elevator after the engine stopped producing power is that he wanted to stop the prop to make a more compelling video for non-aviators, so he was slowing down as much as he could to get it to stop windmilling. (Also, note I don't call it an "engine failure", but I refer to it as "the engine stopped producing power," which is likely to be a more accurate description.)

Good video for anyone who is a non-pilot. However, you go far too light on this scammer. This is obviously a stunt and was dangerous for many, many reasons. The valley below has a roadway in it, as well as the river. The risk of fire, of the aircraft hitting someone or damaging property. The bad effect on those who fear flying. The criminal and legal aspects. The more than obvious omissions in good piloting proceedures. Do not appologize for being critical of this hoax. Disgusting abuse of the privilege of piloting an aircraft.

I'm not a pilot, just an enthusiast with a few hours at the controls of Cessnas. But even I know this guy didn't do anything I've seen countless other pilots do when their engine quits. He made no restart attempts or checks. Just went into GTFO mode.
Also, pay attention to his door! It is closed for take off and cruise, but before the engine stops, you can see it's been cranked open. To me, this is clue the bail out was pre-planned.
Also, he says he's going to go paraglide. Where is the paraglider? The plane is empty apart from himself. And lastly, he's not wearing a chute in ANY of his videos when flying.
