California man admits to deliberately crashing plane to get YouTube views

- With multiple camera shots and slick editing, Trevor Jacob documented the dramatic moments when his small plane crashed into a Santa Barbara County hillside as he parachuted to safety.
The 2021 video titled, "I Crashed My Airplane," quickly amassed hundreds of thousands of views on RUclips, but it was all staged.

I remember watching the breakdown video video on Trent Palmer's channel. I didn't buy it for a second. His whole demeanor throughout the whole thing was off. He never declared an emergency landing, it was radio silence the whole way and he filmed the entire thing! I'm sorry, but if I'm in an emergency like, all my focus is on surviving. He's reckless and a complete narcissist. it's comforting knowing he'll never fly again.

Watch the original video, and the professional pilots out there who have commented about this.
1) You'll see objects under his pants behind his calves that look like fire extinguishers.
2) The door was propped open.
3) Amount of GoPro cameras setup on his plane to capture everything.
4) In all of his other videos on his channel he does not wear a parachute while piloting, only this one.
5) There are literal flight simulators that have this area mapped out already that show many areas where he can land safely.
6) He did not make any emergency calls when his plane "failed".
7) He had 7 miles to glide his plane to safety.
8) Other pilots flown the same path in their RUclips channels and show where he could have landed instead.
9) The way he wobbles the plane was to purposely slow it down so it would eventually just nose dive.
10) He carried his friends ashes in a sandwich bag.
It was #10 that gave it away.

i thought the same. The first thing i wondered was how he managed to get so many different camera angles for something that looked "Accidental".
He just happened to have a parachute already on and he didn't even try to restart the engine.
Any experienced pilot will know, if the engine really had failed, that particular aircraft could have been glided to a safe landing - 15 minutes of fame, 15 years of jail.
yeah, engine outs are common (buddy landed in the bay and other friends have landed off and on airport with little damage), but control system failures are so few and far between that I don't know anyone other than aerobatic pilots that wear parachutes in small planes (they really do have issues with wings folding up or control surfaces tearing off occasionally; even so, my pitts driver instructor had glided one in twice rather than bailing).
an airplane is a really good controlled way of gliding to the ground. it's very steerable + crash protection. wearing a parachute is like wearing a full nomex suit and helmet for taking your kids to school.
I hope he spends atleast some time in prison and doesn't just get a plea deal.

There's some good videos by other pilots busting his story... pointing out the small fire extinguisher strapped to his leg under his trousers, and someone else took a similar plane to the same place and altitude and was able to easily glide it to Santa Ynez airstrip to the south.
Aviation community basicly did all the investigation for the prosecution. Trevor really chose the wrong community to do the stunt.
It would have been better for everyone if his chute failed.

Knew this was deliberate from the very beginning. Almost any one should have seen this from the start. Faked the engine out, wore a massive parachute when he never did previously, used a different plane than he normally does, all the setup cameras. Just ridiculous. He should never fly again, and he should see some prison time for his lying to federal prosecutors.

I dont hold a pilots license but know enough about aviation that he could’ve glided to a safe landing 🛬 zone. Plus he makes no communication except to the camera. It’s a sloppy video; the selfie stick was just way overboard.

I don’t know the area very well. Depending on his altitude and current location gliding to a possible landing zone may not have been a suitable option.
Some pilots will carry a parachute just in case.

The sad thing about this is the guy had a great Channel, I used to watch him all the time. Long before the plane crash. And when it happened, he seems like such an upstanding guy had a hard time believing he would be that Reckless. But you can't deny it when you see the video.

Like Brock turner, judge said prison wouldn't be good for him. So for his rape conviction judge only gave him 6mos in jail.
20 years is the maximum, he hasn't been sentenced... that will happen in about 3 weeks. The judge will see the plea deal, and although the DA didn't put a sentencing recommendation, one can read between the lines where it says the DA's office can appeal anything less than 18 months, and the perp can appeal a sentence over 30 months.
Lmao, I just started flying lessons in a similar plane and wondered what happened to this guy. It’s so easy to land that plane. If the engine dies, it basically turns into a glider.

As soon as anyone with any knowledge of small planes and aviation saw this video, there were comments to the effect that it seemed staged. Views from the plane showed lots of places in the valley to land well within gliding range. And NOBODY "always flies with a parachute." Such a pity destroying an old classic aircraft. I hope RUclips demonetizes his "crash".
