According to Wikipedia, Bowie was partially inspired to write this song after hearing of the Chernobyl disaster while in Switzerland shortly after the initial incident. Can't say I hear much of the resemblance outside the 2nd verse, but it's an interesting tidbit nonetheless. "I felt a warm warm breeze That melted metal and steel I got a bad migraine That lasted three long years And the pills that I took Made my fingers disappear"
I can hear some of it, yeah. The warm "breeze" that melted metal and steel, and being made to take pills. I think it's the third verse that most suits. The "talented child" that came to live in their town is the power of atomic energy. "We never bothered to scream when your mask fell off" = when the core exploded, the shield/mask fell off. Locals didn't scream/panic because they didn't know they were already dead.
Also the original line and also the one Bowie sang live was "you were a VOLATILE child" I'm not sure why it was changed on the released studio version but I think "volatile" suits much better
Anatoly Grischenko (an honoured test pilot) and Gurgen Karapetyan spent four days flying a helicopter dropping sand and wet cement though the hole in the roof of the reactor . Wonder if that is the top gun ace flying throw a hole , just a thought
Huge Bowie fan, but this is the only song I like on that album. And I love it and the video. Never Let Me Down was the album that made me feel like Bowie had quit making music for me and moved on to a different audience. The music was good, but it wasn't for me. Lucky for me, he came back to me later. Unlucky for me, I didn't realize it until much, much later
I love how the great David Bowie adapted himself very well to the trends of the MTVs 80s music videos, his taste for the visual and the espectacle were a perfect match for the aesthetics of that era. Here he seems to say "Do you want a 80s Bowie's video? I'LL give you an 80s Bowie's music video!!!
This was always one of my favorite songs and video. I loved these clever lyrics and he was physically so demonstrative. Some of these moves in the choreography were breath taking. He really trusted his dancers. But, the BEST part of all is that incredibly sexy hair and smile.

@theresa right back at you! Luckily there's a massive supply of Bowie while we're stuck at home! It does have me wondering what he'd have to say about these times we're living in. Life's only gotten weirder since he left Earth.
Technically not a mullet, his hair is just long layed feathered cut. A mullet was when guys had the top to the ears feathered like a short hair cut and the back was long and mostly one length. If Bowie's hair was all over a bit longer and fuller it would be a shag, mostly worn by women at the time. Women like Joan Jet wore a short spiky shag usually black was the color of choice.
I've been a lifelong Bowie fan. I bought this album when it came out in 1987. I was 15. I always had thought this song was about the Chernobyl accident. Now, I know it was. It's clear.
This is his best video. I know that’s a controversial statement but it just is. He is so hot, the best hair, the best outfit, I love him and he is just incredible
He looks so small and fragile in this video, even though he was really tall! Maybe it’s because the male dancers are all muscle and the way they toss him around like he weights nothing. One of my favourite songs and videos without a doubt! And his hair, fabulous as ever ❤️
I saw an interview with him not long ago where he said that the dance routines on glass spider left him with bruises. I also read somewhere that a fan saw him throw up at the edge of the stage after a gruelling dance workout.
One of my favorite Bowie tracks of the time, and perhaps even all time. Nice beat, interesting lyrics, and, as always, well performed by the man himself. We'll forever miss you, David.
Those lyrics are coming true. You were a talented child You came to live in our town We never bothered to scream When your mask went on We only smelt the gas As we lay down to sleep Definitely true to what industry is doing to our cities and towns today. From Nestle stealing water out form under us, to industry creating places so toxic, no one can live in many places these days.
@@qwipperty My favorite track form this album, and, unfortunately, I think you are right about its coming true. “We’ll give every life for the crackpot notion”-whether or not the notion emanates from Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin, Victor Orban, Assad, Donald Trump, or Vladimir Putin. (The past is the best predictor of the future.)
Kristina A , quipperty had it correct. I have the original l.p. and "went on" is how the lyrics are written in the sleeve. And that is what Bowie is singing. Never expect the expected when listening to Bowie
There'll never be another one like him and I swear I get tears every time I remember he's gone. His music was something extraordinary. Even the most popy songs had this sensitivity no one else could imitate
Fun fact: Peter Frampton can be seen at 1:04, 2:21, 2:26, 3:08, 3:16, and various other points in the background of this music video. He actually played lead guitar on most of the songs on the album this song is from, Never Let Me Down, and the subsequent Glass Spider tour. Many of the theatrics done in shows on that tour were similar to those done in this video, even including Peter not really being involved and just playing guitar to the side. He _did,_ however, sing lead vocals on the chorus of "Sons of the Silent Age" from Bowie's _Heroes_ album, and he played an absolutely killer solo during "Loving the Alien".
I was there in Tampa and I remember when Peter Frampton broke in and sang, "Baby, I'll never let you go All I see is all I know Let's take another way down (sons of sound and sons of sound) Baby, baby, I'll never let you down I can't stand another sound Let's fin another way in (sons of sound and sons of sound)" I was wondering if Bowie was going to hit those notes. I heard this for the first time recently on a radio show called 'Forgotten 80s' and really liked it. I don't know why it's obscure/forgotten when it's so catchy with a great dance beat. The only 80s Bowie songs played on standard radio are 'Let's Dance' (which seems to be on a loop) or occasionally 'Ashes to Ashes'. I like uncovering 80s gems, but it's surprising that even someone as iconic as Bowie has songs that you rarely hear anymore.
Ann White Is it me, or did he actually look "gayer" in the 80s with that blonde hair than he ever did as Ziggy Stardust? He looks like the guy from Seigfried & Roy here. lol
Ann White Yeah. I put it together pretty quickly after the first few listens. :) But I guess I know more about the culture of that era. What surprises me is that a lot of younger gay men don't even know what things like "clone" and "flagging" mean! Going the way of Judy Garland...
I actually don't think ' pretty ' is the right word. He has a very distinctive and chiselled face. His ears stick out, note the way he often used profile shots on album covers.
aussiefaraday Yea it's great. Day in Day out is truly wonderful the way the drums crash in on the last chorus after the last verse. Man I love how loud that is. Never Let Me Down the remix version that was released as a single and added a saxophone in the remix is absolutely awesom Just another genius interpretation from David changing the arrangement.
big indian boy - It's overlooked because it's on Never Let Me Down. I prefer the 2008 remix on Nothing Has Changed though. It strips the 80s production and improves it IMO.
Considering that the Scary Monsters album is, strictly, an 80s album. That's quite a statement. It's good, but it doesn't come close to most of the tracks on Scary.
I'm willing to talk about how underrated the actual song is (especially in the later non-80s mix) but this recording, with all the vile sound and arrangement style from the putrid sounding 'Never Let me Down' album should be *more* underrated. I know it's probable that disliked stuff can take on some kind of perverse charm for some but when its creator - Bowie himself - spits on it very publicly, please take notice.

David mi manchi tantissimo sei stato un mio mito già dall' età di 9_10 anni ed ora che ne ho 52 sei sempre un mito per me e lo sarai per sempre con tutta la tua musica che ci hai lasciato! David I love yuo rip.in pace
57... been with Bowie since 1974... know almost every single thing... never sure why this 1987 LP is always on the periphery... Everyone in the 80's used the new studio machinery of the day; these drum machines sounding quite muscular... Thought not only were the songs quite good but that the overall sound was contemporary for the times, infused with all that is Bowie... Can we stop the madness
This video still gets to me... not just the lyrics, but how beautiful and young he looks, the trust it had to take on his part to be tossed around, to drop and expect others to catch him. I still remember the first time I saw it. Once he climbed up the scaffolding I thought he's safe, but then he leapt down and I was screaming NO!😂😂😂
He had a good hairdresser. And used good hairstyling producs and i think easy hair. I have the same hairdo. But no good hairdresser like Teddy Antolin.
Absolutely brilliant song and video. One of my favourites. I believe the song was on about the Chernobyl disaster, that happened in Russia in the 1980s
Toni Basil's choreography. Saw this video when it first premiered on MTV and/or Friday Night Videos. Yes, I'm dating myself. At 53 with former performance / dance experience, this video still does it for me. Everything from David's itchy nose to the dance/fight/confrontation pieces. Beautiful piece of work.
The first time I saw this video on MTV, I couldn't believe it when he came down from the scaffolding. I was thinking "No, Bowie, don't go down there. They'll just going to beat you up again."
BOWIE was a rock god . He was the best and reinvented himself many times. I loved him so much that the day he died I woke up surrounded by people waiting for my reaction when I heard he was gone. How do you react when a star falls from the sky, never bright again? He was BOWIE and they'll never be another like him.
Cool fact: Bowie never liked how the final song came out. He stated that he felt that they rushed it in the studio and that it didn't come out the way he heard it in his head. Also, he always wanted to go back into the studio and redo it but, never did. There's a whole video on RUclips with the actual producers and engineers who explain it.
All REAL Bowie fans agree, Never let Me Down is a great album. The only ones who don't like it are "hipsters" who aren't even Bowie fans who say the only albums you're suppose to like are Ziggy Stardust or Aladdin Sane b/c some website/ magazine told them so. Real Bowie fans think for themselves !
Hmmm Bowie himself didn't think so apparently. He disowned the album shortly after its release and never performed any of the tunes on it again after 1987.
I'm a "real" Bowie fan and it's the only Bowie album I've never liked. I bought it when first released and I haven't changed my opinion. Having said that, I'm not here to judge others who enjoy it.
bullshit. i bought when it came out. Massive Bowie fan. It's bad. He had a run of three stinkers until Outside (3/5) and Earthling (4/5) then went shit again with Hours and Reality etc.
Mosh, yes Zeroes of course! A great closer for side one and the title track is lovely 👍 like most i found the album very 'empty' & terribly over-produced. I don't like to compare DB either, one in a zillion..! ✌
Here's my legend. The bit when the guy goes off dancing 2:21 was an improvisation caught on camera. After Bowie reviewed it he decided to include in the video.
I remember reading that this was the song that Bowie wanted to release as the first single off the album, but he was overruled/outvoted/persuaded by the record execs to issue 'Day In Day Out' first. I believe the latter got to #17 in the UK charts, and 'Time Will Crawl' subsequently struggled, somewhere in the 30s, if memory serves me correct. We'll never know whether, if TWC had been released first, it would have been top 10. He thought it had a better chance of being a hit than DI, DO.
True...and I love Day In, Day Out. Over 35 years later and most of us are still living in that world. In fact, many of us have 'faded out' the past two years.....
This song is amazing, so underrated!! I love David Bowie, he's such a genius, simply gorgeous in every field of art; extremely talented, intelligent, charismatic and hot af !!
I think 🤔 this is one of the best tours Bowie ever did, he was never afraid to push the boundaries; a lot of people slated it, but I think 🤔 it was amazing and he looked gorgeous, as usual! :) ;)
The physicality Bowie demonstrates from beginning to end, combined with those gorgeous locks, masterful voice, and that boyish smile,.....oooooh, THIS is what I call foreplay!
I still had not seen this mv until now, despite having the vinyl as soon as it came out. This song is one of my all time favorites, and still holds up today. I miss his music.
It’s sad that I tear up watching this video, when I was younger (oh god) I thought they were actually harming him. I was so naive and so young, to realize this would later be one of my many favorites in video style and in general. I don’t think I’d be the person I am today if it weren’t for my mum who told me my first song was China girl and how I’d dance around the house. I honestly don’t think I’d be alive today if it weren’t for Bowie, he was more on the father figure side but also more like my overall obsession but music soulmate. I don’t know what I’d do honestly if I did listen to 64+ songs I enjoy from him.

0:22 this scene really didn't need to be this hot...
Yeah, it did
You can admire the man's or woman's presence, image, style/ Of course, it excites you, but don't sexualize it/ Hedonism is the sin/
This video still gets to me... not just the lyrics, but how beautiful and young he looks, the trust it had to take on his part to be tossed around, to drop and expect others to catch him. I still remember the first time I saw it. Once he climbed up the scaffolding I thought he's safe, but then he leapt down and I was screaming NO!😂😂😂
Heard it first time in the great movie Les Amants Du Pont-Neuf, never realised it was a David Bowie song until now
He had a good hairdresser.
While I know that he wasn't happy with that album for the reasons you mention, I really think this song is special in terms of sound/vibe.
Man, this guy never ceases to be the all time greatest artist.
@ Saiint Martins not true, and it's not up to you to gatekeep.
Iconic af
This one of David Bowie’s music videos along with the music video for Ashes To Ashes must’ve been Fantastic to watch on MTV back the day!😃
No matter the style, David Bowie will rock it
this song is so underrated. i love it one of my fave songs and music videos of all time
Excellent! Easily the best track on the album, gr8 tour rehearsal vid too... ★★★
Scary Stardust
Zeroes is SO good too. I don't even like to compare Bowie's stuff, it's too good!
Mosh, yes Zeroes of course! A great closer for side one and the title track is lovely 👍 like most i found the album very 'empty' & terribly over-produced. I don't like to compare DB either, one in a zillion..! ✌
When I was twenty years old I bought a watch and later saw in this video David had the same one. That made my day! Always remembered that.
That's pretty cool!
Nice to see this video in this quality! Thank you for uploading all of these. Gives me the Bowie fix
zoe palmer exactly. It’s also interesting to see how fast views happen. I wonder what else is being analyzed with these repostings.
What a great performance & it never got shown on TOTP . He really was a fantastic artist & person . I miss him ⚡️
The song is literally fantastic. We can only pity the fools who ever hated on it...
Growing up a dancer, and a fan of Bowie, he is just such a musical and talented in all elements visionary. ❤❤❤❤
WE MISS YOU
3:45 Oh, that little smile upon his lips.............. Guaranteed, people, THESE were the best of times.......
Because it's Bowie, I'll have to let this one slide. He's the man.
Nunca teremos no mundo um artista como ele David Bowie era único
This song is amazing, so underrated!! I love David Bowie, he's such a genius, simply gorgeous in every field of art; extremely talented, intelligent, charismatic and hot af !!
I think 🤔 this is one of the best tours Bowie ever did, he was never afraid to push the boundaries; a lot of people slated it, but I think 🤔 it was amazing and he looked gorgeous, as usual! :) ;)
My fave Bowie album ever! The glass spider tour was amazing and this album is a masterpiece! Love this song, first time seeing the video today!
That smile at the end...I absolutely adore this track. The coolest man.Iconic Bowie.
You were one of the greatest...
Really love the way David bowie sings this song as he sounds like Mark Owen from Take That on this song
He is having a ball being thrown around by these guys! Viva Bowie!
気合の入ったすごくすごくいい曲!もっと評価されてほしい。
one of my favourite songs and oh my god David is absolutely stunning in this video ❤
The lord of the music...legendary Bowie...love
So. What are you famous for?
Well, I was in a Bowie video and they laid him on top of me. My shoes smelled fabulous after.
where i couldnt find it T.T i dont know what yer talkin abt
nevermind i found it lmaoo
One of my favourites, so underrated. Even the video is epic.
At 3:00 his hair part actually switches sides & then goes back again at 3:46. Fabulous both ways
So 80s, it hurts... And still my absolute favorite
By far my favorite music video of all time. I love dance fights. Every time I watch this, I see something I've not seen before. Legend.
....choreographed by....TONI BASIL....the video got an article in DANCE MAGAZINE...for her brilliance....
@@corneliuswashington-gp1we niceeee!!!! as it should! she's fantastic! the dances are amazing.
The Guitar tone is amazing on this track
I just really like how this song sounds.
I am seeing this for the first time now. Terrific choreography!
Damn, I love his music videos! Those are always so creative and cool! I love his music too!
Bowie sempre a frente do seu tempo
The way this is employed in Leos Carax’s The Lovers on the Bridge (1991) always stuns me
I love love love his hair
Thank you.
Everything is first class PopArt in this clip! Forever David Bowie!
