Lyrics
Watching them come and go
The Templars and the Saracens
They're travelling the holy land
Opening telegrams
Torture comes and torture goes
Knights who'd give you anything
They bear the cross of Coeur de Leon
Salvation for the mirror blind
But if you pray
All your sins are hooked upon the sky
Pray and the heathen lie will disappear
Prayers they hide the saddest view
(Believing the strangest things, loving the alien)
And your prayers, they break the sky in two
(Believing the strangest things, loving the alien)
Thinking of a different time
Palestine a modern problem
Bounty and your wealth in land
Terror in a best laid plan
Watching them come and go
Tomorrows and the yesterdays
Christians and the unbelievers
Hanging by the cross and nail
But if you pray
All your sins are hooked upon the sky
Pray and the heathen lie will disappear
Prayers the hide the saddest view
(Believing the strangest things, loving the alien)
And your prayers will break the sky in two
(Believing the strangest things, loving the alien)
About David Bowie:
David Bowie redefined musical genres and the potential of live performance for generations of music lovers. Creating and discarding a variety of personae and restlessly challenging musical boundaries, Bowie released timeless albums including Space Oddity, Hunky Dory, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust…, Aladdin Sane, Diamond Dogs, Young Americans, Station to Station, "Heroes,” Let's Dance, Heathen, The Next Day and many more. Blackstar, Bowie’s 28th and final studio album, was released on his 69th birthday, January 8, 2016. David Bowie died on January 10, 2016, two days after the release of Blackstar. His body of work, his influence on the worlds of music, art, fashion, film, theatre and beyond, and his legacy of innovation and reinvention will live forever. 2022 kicks off with Bowie at 75, a celebration of his 75th birthday with the Brilliant Adventure box set, the previously unreleased Toy, the 50th anniversary of Ziggy Stardust and a series of special events.

This might be Bowie's most underrated song. I definitely think this should've been a bigger hit than "Blue Jean"
Yeah, blue jean is not the greatest song in my opinion.
I agree. Blue Jean is a fun song but this is poetry.
Oh you pretty things is a nice gem as well
He looks really sexy in both though.
I love this and Blue Jean, but I've loved this longer.
David Bowie was indeed an alien. I submit as proof: he was the only "human" who could make 80s dance moves look hot af.
Out of this world fosho.
Album David
David Bowie was a musical genius. His music was out of this world awesome.
he was in the beginning... the more he got attached to life on earth the more he became a human... but that's another story
I think he more or less did something with the ubermensch concept. Almost supernatural in some sense. A bit difficult to put into words. But, certainly revolutionized art itself.
Underrated Masterpiece!
Tonight is honestly my favorite Bowie album..
Yup.
Underrated? This is one of the most remembered Bowie's pieces!
I agree 100%
But this version is sub par. It has to be the album version with the magnificent extended synth/guitar outro.
Funny thing, I was at karaoke a couple of days ago and was talking to a guy while another singer's song started. The guy I was talking to jaw dropped and just started saying "no way, no way" I'm like what bro? He's all, "This is a rare deep Bowie cut"(by karaoke standards)And then I realized, I'd never heard the song before. I'm in my 60's and hearing a Bowie song for the 1st time is something I can't truly can't describe. I've listened to the song maybe 50 times now lol
What do your neighbours think about that?
D Rock lovely moment mate
I wanna hang out w y'all
Loving The Alien's an amazing song, I don't think your neighbours mind lol
Worry devil
No screen ever seems big or complex enough for bowie visuals.
So true
Bedrest is the best cure for a blue head.
His movements make him seem very tall. At least in this one.
Completely agree ... I play DB Cover songs on YT ... GENIUS ARTIST ... just finishing Station to Station ... what a delight.
Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence ... film/movie
One of the best Bowie songs for ever.
Thank you, David .
He kind of nicked it from psychedelic furs love my way but far less good
his voice is amazing on this amazing song !!

just kidnäp $€ pöpp ^ ^
I saw the genius perform as the thin white Duke in Sydney Australia, must have been 40 plus years ago, I was 30 feet from him. Amazing
I remember as a teen waiting for this video to premiere. Loved the song - especially the chorus - the melancholy cryptic vibe. Bowie constantly redefining himself never attempting to replicate a previous album; to me this is what made him a true artist.
LOVE THE SONG LOVE HIS VOICE DO NOT LOVE THE VIDEO sorry i felt he never needed all the ''stuff'' around him.
it inspired one of the best series in the world... Stranger Things
The sensuality of his voice, the melody , the class of this music, a chosen one, one of a kind.. etc etc..
best ending to a music video I've ever seen
Hahaha scary...
We miss you 💚💚💚
Yes We Do immensely⚘
Very much
He is so beautiful, never will there be a man as beautiful on the outside as inside as he.
not sure that makes sense
Kurt Cobain!!! Don't forget Kurt! And now Sam Smith!!!!
@@annettespizuoco7524 And don’t forget Huw Edwards

Only me , remember
The masses will never understand what they had and lost in David Bowie. That's truly sad.
And in many other artists that people do not generally listen to! From Peter Gabriel (and Genesis hehe) and Gentle Giants, to Kate Bush and Björk. HOW could someone live without such music??
No, but we know, don't we, the enlightened ones. We're not the masses, we're different, oh yeah . . .
It is the perrogative to expect them to one day all reach the next paradigm/level/type-civilization.

DAVID BOWIE - THE CHAMELEON OF POP ROCK
David Robert Jones (8 January 1947 - 10 January 2016), known professionally as David Bowie (/ˈboʊi/ BOH-ee), was an English singer-songwriter and actor. A leading figure in the music industry, he is regarded as one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century. Bowie was acclaimed by critics and musicians, particularly for his innovative work during the 1970s. His career was marked by reinvention and visual presentation, and his music and stagecraft had a significant impact on popular music. Bowie developed an interest in music from an early age. He studied art, music and design before embarking on a professional career as a musician in 1963. "Space Oddity", released in 1969, was his first top-five entry on the UK Singles Chart. After a period of experimentation, he re-emerged in 1972 during the glam rock era with his flamboyant and androgynous alter ego Ziggy Stardust. The character was spearheaded by the success of Bowie's single "Starman" and album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, which won him widespread popularity. In 1975, Bowie's style shifted towards a sound he characterised as "plastic soul", initially alienating many of his UK fans but garnering him his first major US crossover success with the number-one single "Fame" and the album Young Americans. In 1976, Bowie starred in the cult film The Man Who Fell to Earth and released Station to Station. In 1977, he again changed direction with the electronic-inflected album Low, the first of three collaborations with Brian Eno that came to be known as the "Berlin Trilogy". "Heroes" (1977) and Lodger (1979) followed; each album reached the UK top five and received lasting critical praise. After uneven commercial success in the late 1970s, Bowie had three number-one hits: the 1980 single "Ashes to Ashes", its album Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps), and "Under Pressure" (a 1981 collaboration with Queen). He achieved massive commercial success in the 1980s starting with Let's Dance (1983). Between 1988 and 1992, he fronted the hard rock band Tin Machine before resuming his solo career in 1993. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Bowie continued to experiment with musical styles, including industrial and jungle. He also continued acting; his roles included Major Jack Celliers in Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence (1983), Jareth the Goblin King in Labyrinth (1986), Pontius Pilate in The Last Temptation of Christ (1988), and Nikola Tesla in The Prestige (2006), among other film and television appearances and cameos. He stopped touring after 2004 and his last live performance was at a charity event in 2006. In 2013, Bowie returned from a decade-long recording hiatus with The Next Day. He remained musically active until his death from liver cancer at his home in New York City. He died two days after both his 69th birthday and the release of his final album, Blackstar (2016). During his lifetime, his record sales, estimated at over 100 million records worldwide, made him one of the best-selling musicians of all time. In the UK, he was awarded ten platinum, eleven gold and eight silver album certifications, and released 11 number-one albums. In the US, he received five platinum and nine gold certifications. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996. Rolling Stone ranked him among the greatest artists in history. As of 2022, Bowie was the best-selling vinyl artist of the 21st century. 👑💯‼️♥️💯‼️And I have the great, great honor of having in my discography eight CD-albums by this great artist, who inspired many other great artists who came after him. From the great chameleon of Pop Rock. I have three copies of the CD-Album LET'S DANCE (REMASTER), whose original edition dates from 1983. And until now it was the biggest commercial success, surpassing ten million units sold worldwide! This is followed by a single copy, also remastered, of the CD-Album TONIGHT (1984), and two units also remastered from the CD-Album BLACK TIE WHITE NOISE, originally published in 1993. And, finally, until now, the fourth CD-Album, and last record work by David Bowie, released one day after his death, in January 2016, BLACKSTAR, two copies for the collection of eight magnificent discographic works, only masterpieces that remained for the history of British and world Pop Rock. And the only number one on the US Billboard 200! Rest in peace, David Bowie! I sincerely miss you so much in this world! You were a great chameleonic artist, and you left an enviable legacy for other artists, and fans until the present day, until forever! Congratulations on your work in music! Thank you very much for inspiration! Thank you very much for your great music!
👑💯‼️♥️💯‼️
Tonight is the 16th studio album by the English singer-songwriter David Bowie, released on 24 September 1984 through EMI America Records. The follow-up to his most commercially successful album Let's Dance, it was written and recorded in mid-1984 at Le Studio in Morin-Heights, Canada, following the conclusion of the Serious Moonlight Tour. Bowie, Derek Bramble and Hugh Padgham co-produced the album. Many of the same personnel from Let's Dance and the accompanying tour returned for Tonight, with a few additions. Much of Bowie's creative process was the same as he used on Let's Dance, similarly playing no instruments and offering little creative input to the musicians. The music on Tonight has been characterised as pop, blue-eyed soul, dance and rock. Much of the album's sound is the same as its predecessor's, due to Bowie's effort to retain the new audience that he had recently attracted, although some tracks contain R&B and reggae influences. Devoid of new ideas from touring, Bowie wrote only two new songs himself. Three songs, including the title track, were covers of Iggy Pop songs, who was present during most of the sessions and co-wrote multiple tracks. The title track is a duet with singer Tina Turner. The artwork, featuring Bowie blue-painted against an oil painting backdrop, was designed by Mick Haggerty. Supported by the singles "Blue Jean", "Tonight" and "Loving the Alien", Tonight was a commercial success, reaching number one on the UK Albums Chart. Critical reception was poor, with most finding a lack of creativity. Following the critical dismissal of his next studio album Never Let Me Down (1987), Bowie expressed dissatisfaction with this period, calling Tonight not one of his stronger efforts, a sentiment echoed by later commentators. He did not tour to support the album and only performed "Loving the Alien" and "Blue Jean" on subsequent tours. The album was remastered in 2018 as part of the box set Loving the Alien (1983-1988). 👑💯‼️♥️💯‼️

[Verse 1]
Watching them come and go
The Templars and the Saracens
They're travelling the holy land
Opening telegrams
Torture comes and torture goes
Knights who'd give you anything
They bear the cross of Coeur de Lion
Salvation for the mirror blind
[Pre-Chorus]

All your sins are hooked upon the sky

And your prayers, they break the sky in two
(Believing the strangest things, loving the alien)
[Interlude]
[Verse 2]
Thinking of a different time
Palestine a modern problem
Bounty and your wealth in land
Terror in a best laid plan
Watching them come and go
Tomorrows and the yesterdays
Christians and the unbelievers
Hanging by the cross and nail
[Pre-Chorus]
But if you pray
All your sins are hooked upon the sky
Pray and the heathen lie will disappear
[Chorus 1]
Prayers they hide the saddest view

@@waynenorthspacebuoy3529 I only play Bowie music on my keyboard for myself.
Thanks for the lyrics. I started video over to follow the lyrics. Such an odd song. Wonderful.
Thank you, I finally know all the words. In this case the alien has more than one meaning! He let us know over and over didn't he?
@Khurram Aziz oh my...well then this song is for you, obviously
Definitely one of his most underrated tracks. I prefer the full seven-minutes album version though
Completely agree ... I play DB Cover songs on YT ... GENIUS ARTIST ... just finishing Station to Station ... what a delight.
This is definitely one of his most underrated songs, at least for the 80's, with a very strong, truthful and powerful message that has literally been relevant for centuries and still is today. Miss you everyday David.
Completely agree ... I play DB Cover songs on YT ... GENIUS ARTIST ... just finishing Station to Station ... what a delight.
But the bit that makes it, musically - the magnificent extended synth / guitar outro - is missing.
I think my late Dad knew how much I loved this song, I played it enough!
Totally agree ... I've had a wonderful time playing Station to Station as a YT one man band ... it was such fun.
@@MAZE4 Totally agree ... I've had a wonderful time playing Station to Station as a YT one man band ... it was such fun.
The music blends minors, majors and diminished chords in just the right places... to add that hint of doubt, cynicism, and hope. Add to that the lyrics and you'll spend months digesting the many ways they can be taken. Add in this video and thy brain explodeth.
I saw this at first on MTV, a few times. Then spent years trying to find the CD. Once I did it all came back again. Very nice, superb!
“When an alien resides with you in your land, you shall not oppress the alien. The alien who resides with you shall be to you as the native-born among you; you shall love the alien as yourself, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God.”

Again great music that's decades old, yet still carry a message for today.😊❤❤ You were a genius, David, and are sorely missed...
David Bowie, made great sound all the way to the end. Now he's making music where ever he is now
"are" a genius. no past tense with BOWIE. missed and loved beyond measure.
@@noahbach2211 The message that humanity is sick - they belive in strangest things, loving the alien. And that tommorow are the same as yesterdays in that regard. Palestine now and at the times of crusades, pointless fight on the basis of belifs. Get it?
I dreamt I talked to a beautiful blue alien. Now I think it might of been him, lol. I don't think we used verbal words. ( I asked him a question. ) This was after Bowie's death.
I’m just here for his fashion sense

Possibly my favourite record by Bowie. I remember hearing it as a teenager in the 80s. I didn't know what it was about, but I remember I liked the title because I was very into science fiction then. After having a bad experience with religion in my adult years, this song has great meaning to me.
Completely agree ... I play DB Cover songs on YT ... GENIUS ARTIST ... just finishing Station to Station ... what a delight.
THIS SONG IS
SOME AND MANY KINDS OF "GENIUS"
BECAUSE,
WHEN HE PLAYED THE MOVIE
"THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH" ,
THE ALIEN WAS HIM...
BUT IN "LOVING THE ALIEN",
THE ALIEN WAS NOT A SUBJECT BUT AN OBJECT WHICH IS THE "ALTER-EGO" OF A SUBJECT, OF COURSE INTHE MATTER WE'RE DEALING, THAT IS
"PRAYER" IS THE ALIEN...
A GREAT LESSON OF PHILOSOPHY MATCHED TO THE MUSIC...
"TRACK" REALLY UNDER RATED
BUT FAR AHEAD OUR TIMES

80's music had such a classy sound and loads of style, sophistication and elegance. I would love to see this style of music make a comeback.
When Bowie died, I went to a makeshift memorial outside his NY home, full of records, music and flowers. His fans were there; it was raining that night like God himself was crying. It was so tremendously sad and beautiful. There will never be another.
I'd make a clone of him if I could.
Peter Framptom's instrumental version of this song is just gorgeous and a fitting tribute to his childhood friend.
I'll have to check that out right now!
RIP David Bowie (a.k.a. David Robert Jones)! It’s been only two years since you’ve been gone, but I still love you. I still love you and will always keep loving the alien. ❤️♥️❤️♥️❤️♥️❤️♥️❤️♥️
To be safe and sane, listen to DAVID BOWIE!
he had so many brilliant tunes that id totally forgotten about this one ..
Possibly the Bowie's most underrated song and i love the video with the reference to the work of painter Giorgio DeChirico.
In my humble opinion, being so ahead of it time , has to be one of the best songs ever made. ❤
He was a force for good in this world...
We love you❤😭😭😭❤❤❤
México 🇲🇽 present !!! I love Bowie !! I need you :(
2:23 relevant all the more right now. Perhaps forever.
This song is one of my favorites. Love Bowie, always have, always will.
2021 - I love this song and I loved David Bowie ('Rock God' as faxed to Ricky Gervais in reply to his Birthday message) with his diversity, always trying new things, interested to keep his mind occupied. And his extremely British sense of humor! Nobody should try to understand the meanings of his music, as much as you can... if you are massively interested... watch documentaries... you'll be surprised that a fair bit of the time, he was taking the pi$$!
If _Labyrinth_ had got a sequel in the 80s, this would have been a great soundtrack.
man i miss this guy:( he brought an energy that doesn’t exist anymore
People saying that this song is underrated
I agree, with one exception
The WHOLE Tonight album is underrated
The alien gone but not forgotten
Tonight will always have a special place in my heart because it was the first Bowie album I had heard in full. I had heard his earlier album, but only a selection of songs. I later went back and picked up his earlier albums and his later ones as well. Bowie will forever be one of my favorite artists ever.

Along with several others here, this has to be one of Bowie's finest. Tackles religion - specifically Abrahamic religions - mysticism in general, cultural appropriation and empiricism. All in a set co-opted from Dali and Picasso, with Bowie channeling Sinatra. And if that doesn't do it for you, consider: Who else would think "I know, I'll paint me face blue and put a big bright light in me gob so me teeth glow"? Absolutely barking crazy and brilliant, all at the same time.
I think a converse could be made it is a critique of Zionism, xenophilia, miscegenation, and sentimentalism/romanticism.
Cultural appropriation?
Completely agree ... I play DB Cover songs on YT ... GENIUS ARTIST ... just finishing Station to Station ... what a delight.
The set is referring specifically to Giorgio de Chirico. And the light inside the teeth comes from Laurie Anderson's United States I-IV performance.
This man was advocating for the freedom of palestine from the nazi zionist occupation since the 80s! A true activist
Never tire of the “ white duke” for so long made music for everyone to enjoy !!!
03:53 - David gets burnt by the flame. Kinda fitting considering the deep lyrical content, and more than likely why he left it in (either that or he said "sod that, i'm not doing it again - it was a one take deal boys!") LOL. One of my absolute favorite Bowie tracks. Still as relevant today as it was then. Profound and it is hauntingly beautiful.
PS: Anyone else wish that RUclips wouldn't ruin videos with those awful overlays at the tail end of every video? Awful. Really spoils the moment.
Somehow I never noticed that part, interesting footage yet I do not see any direct relation to the lyrics as those are mainly about religious wars. On the other hand, it is reminiscent of a later song Slow Burn . :)
Bowie usually does these in one take or two anyway, a lot of his producers and band players say that about him
x

I know he didn't like this rendition of the song but I'll always love it just the way it is.
Maybe he didn't want to be part of the 80's pop scene but the thing is that HIS take on 80's pop is so amazing!
That guitar solo would never been featured if he done it stripped back or acoustically. It’s a masterpiece. The way the instruments all blend together, the vocals and to top it off, the guitar solo!
This is one of those Bowie moments, where I can see him through the eyes of someone who might have never seen him before. When he runs out in that opening and starts in, I can easily hear someone saying, "Who is this weird guy!" The man is something from another world.

I don't know why this song is underrated. This song might be in my top 10 Bowie songs. I actually love how he sings in this version. Which of course he could never do live 🤗
But there is a stripped down acoustic version he did live! It's fantastic and up on RUclips.
I think the song is underrated partly because it was from a weak album which even Bowie himself was later very dismissive of. Also, as has been mentioned by others on here, the production is very '80s and that's not to everyone's taste.
I remember finding this at the tape store, I didn't know Bowie had released a new album at the time. I was happily surprised by what I heard when I bought it.

"Loving the Alien" is not "loving an extraterrestrial", a phrase that destroys the depth of the lyrics. "Alien" in English means not only "extraterrestrial" but also "unknown", "hidden" or "strange". Not "strange" as "stranger" but strange in the sense of the profane or arcane. The explanation is mine and I take as a reference what the guitarist Carlos Alomar explained about the song, who makes the guitars on this album: Loving strange things to support a belief system.
‘Alien’ is something that does not belong. It does not have to be hidden, strange or unknown.
@@dreadpiratetjoris Search in the British "encyclopedia britannica" the term "alien". David Bowie was british. Period. Read again my post.
@@pablo.romero I was not disagreeing with you, merely expanding on the interpretation and trying to further clarify that alien does not mean ET.
Anyway, the use of ‘alien’ for something that does not belong is very common.
‘Illegal alien’ or ‘alien to the body’ for instance.
I haven't heard Carlos Alomar's explanation. To me, It seems Bowie says something like : "loving that invention someone told you, loving a man (or a god) you haven't even met"
The alien is his schizophrenic brother
Love the way he's constantly unsettling the viewer throughout this video, talented is an understatement for the man. I also admire how Red Dwarf brazenly copied the chorus for part of their theme tune. Gotcha ;-)

David has created very different works ... a truly valuable legacy
Many have tried, all have failed. There will never be one like him again. Also, took me 30 years to recognize that the opening titles from "Labyrinth" are actually a rendition of this song.
Loving the Alien and Absolute Beginners were panned by the music critics back then. I loved both songs. I was 12 when Ashes to Ashes came out, loved him right away.
Thank U 4 this, definitely in my top 5! Such a prophetic song/video...Missing U so very much ★.
David was a beautiful creature of mystic qualities an amazing highly intelligent mind...he was also a sexy fella!
Love it! David is so alive in this video. Interesting to note that this song was also sampled in 'Red Dwarf,' which makes it even more special to me. x
the music at the beginning is so haunting that its not left my mind since i heard it.........and when he makes his entrance at the beginning its like elvis never left the building...............
"Thinking of a different time
Palestine a modern problem
Bounty and your wealth in land
Terror in a best-laid plan"
This is fantastic. Love these new uploads. Still hurts, we miss you David :-(

I guess I am not the only one watching these videos with a tear in my eye, then?
Totally agree ... I play DB Cover songs on YT ... GENIUS ARTIST ... just finishing Station to Station ... what a delight.
So sad, even today...(
Steve Shilkin
I know.
I still wish we could have him back in return for Justin Bieber....
Here for the early celebration of what would be David's 75th birthday. A legend, the black star. Loving the 👽 always
Agree ... I hope my YT Bowie songs as a one man band makes him smile ... Im lucky to be able to make the connection with his spirit.
No one but Bowie would have dared dancing with a tambourine in front of a chocolate fountain somehow placed in a Chirico painting on such an effortless majestic song.
I am so honored to share a birthday with him.
I had a verse of this song stuck in my head for over a week, but couldn't remember where I heard it. I had a light bulb moment when watching the video today and feel ashamed that I'd forgotten the name. I used to listen to his music all the time as a teen, but now it's like I only get rare moments to do so. My car's cd player is broken, so I can't use that. Sometimes I do get lucky and a classic station will play Under Pressure or Fame. That's when I do my own take on carpool karaoke.
This was & still is such an underrated song. It's so in tune with what's happening now in 2021. Stay safe & know you are loved y'all. 💯🎶🙏💞
truth. finding faith in oneself is the hardest thing to do but only you can do it. bowie was quite a tormented soul until he found love
@@33wanwan I recently rewatched The Man Who Fell To Earth & was stunned at how his innocence came thru. Iman & David were a couple who looked like they where two kids. Heaps cute.
If you ever want this style of David’s music to make a return, it won’t happen as no musician has the depth, spirituality, and love for humanity that he had You can however, do what I do and pull up these Bowie gems and enjoy the heck out of his timeless and beautiful music
I'm in love with this video and this song 💙🌟
We all miss you
4:28 I can imagine some kid watching MTV shitting their pants and having nightmares the next night from this
I never saw this video before, such a good one!
Omg what a time to be alive!
David, ritorna dalla tua stella, la musica e noi ne abbiamo bisogno 😔
Best song of all time
Happy birthday mr, we still miss you!!
Un genio. todavia se le extraña.
underrated masterpiece, there is so much into it
Agree ... I hope my YT Bowie songs as a one man band makes him smile ... Im lucky to be able to make the connection with his spirit.
God, how I miss Bowie.
