Lyrics:
There's a brand new dance
But I don't know its name
That people from bad homes
Do again and again
It's big and it's bland
Full of tension and fear
They do it over there but we don't do it here
Fashion! Turn to the left
Fashion! Turn to the right
Oooh, fashion!
We are the goon squad
And we're coming to town
Beep-beep
Beep-beep
Listen to me - don't listen to me
Talk to me - don't talk to me
Dance with me - don't dance with me, no
Beep-beep
There's a brand new talk
But it's not very clear
That people from good homes
Are talking this year
It's loud and tasteless
And I've heard it before
You shout it while you're dancing
On the whole dance floor
Oh bop, fashion
Fashion! Turn to the left
Fashion! Turn to the right
Oooh, fashion!
We are the goon squad
And we're coming to town
Beep-beep
Beep-beep
Listen to me - don't listen to me
Talk to me - don't talk to me
Dance with me - don't dance with me, no
Beep-beep
Oh, bop, do do do do do do do do
Fa-fa-fa-fa-fashion
Oh, bop, do do do do do do do do
Fa-fa-fa-fa-fashion
La-la la la la la la-la
About David Bowie:
David Bowie redefined musical genres and the potential of live performance for generations of music lovers. Creating and discarding a variety of personae and restlessly challenging musical boundaries, Bowie released timeless albums including Space Oddity, Hunky Dory, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust…, Aladdin Sane, Diamond Dogs, Young Americans, Station to Station, "Heroes,” Let's Dance, Heathen, The Next Day and many more. Blackstar, Bowie’s 28th and final studio album, was released on his 69th birthday, January 8, 2016. David Bowie died on January 10, 2016, two days after the release of Blackstar. His body of work, his influence on the worlds of music, art, fashion, film, theatre and beyond, and his legacy of innovation and reinvention will live forever. 2022 kicks off with Bowie at 75, a celebration of his 75th birthday with the Brilliant Adventure box set, the previously unreleased Toy, the 50th anniversary of Ziggy Stardust and a series of special events.

He had best cheekbones in entire world
@Unicorns are my best friends
It's a Capricorn thing. Before you dismiss me, i'm quoting BOWIE: "I love the hills, I'm like a goat, I AM a Capricorn, so I love to hike up on the mountain." Capricorns have marvelous bone structure, so they age backward 'til about 65/70. i watch his 80s videos & can't tell if he's 20 or 40. 😍✌💞
That's true
His cheekbones could cut a bitch.

😂😂 He knew it! His good friend Gary Oldman said of DB's cancer diagnosis, that "David called me & said: Well, I have Good News & Bad News: The Bad News is, i've been on drugs bc I've been fighting Liver Cancer. The Good News is: My Cheekbones are back!" 😅

Got to see him a few times, and on the last tour. Great stuff!!
@@stephenzanichkowsky4434 epic stuff, man. My Mum saw Bowie around 1983 and she said he was epic. My Dad also saw Bowie in 1977 and he, too, said that Bowie was epic. Bowie was one talented man.

Is that really so hard to believe?
Bowie was the most stylish guy through the 70s and 80s my dude. This is no surprise.
@burteriksson Looks like coke nose.
As a teen in the 80's, the Bowie videos were already "old" but we were always excited when they came on MTV. All of them.
Je suis français et je partage ton avis
I literally had two heroes in my very young life in the seventies and eighties and they were Mr. Rodgers and David Bowie.

As a Bowie fan, I'm asking myself, watching this video for the first time in years, if how he looks in it is not... the COOLEST LOOK EVER FOR HIM ?!!!!! @@NormAppleton That's what I thought, I didn't see Mr. Eno😔, but I am a Robert Fripp fan
Robert Fripp's gonzo guitar track is genius. Bowie, the visionary, gave him license to do what he wanted. It sets the emotional tone for the whole song.
Yes I love the way the guitar is sort of doing its own thing over the rest of the song.
Robert Fripp’s guitarwork in this Classic Bowie song is superb. BUT it is not Fripp in the video playing, it is a young G.E. Smith standing on that small stage playing the Telecaster.
He was in the Saturday Night Live band for many years, played with Darryl Hall&John Oates and for some years even in Bob Dylan’s band.
@@Ideagent also plays guitar on Heroes
This guitar is completly out, absurd, out of this world. Love it
Frippertronics, so clearly evident, now that I just read a Fripp interview mentioning it lol. Subconsciously I always knew it was him on this track, and _Heroes_ also. Very _Discipline_ -ish sounding... 🎸🎼👍
Fun fact: Many of the "dance moves" used in this video are re-used in later Bowie videos. The 'piano-playing' move at 1:02 and 2:51 is used in the "Blackstar" video at 2:10 and various other points throughout. The move where he suddenly touches the ground at 0:32 is used in the "Ashes to Ashes" video at 1:11, while Bowie and a couple of women are walking in front of a bulldozer. (Yes, you're missing context.) I'd love to hear other examples of moves in this video used in other ones if anyone knows of some.
MattCraftDotDerp 0:39 Bowie doing the Blackstar move, It would be great if someone transformed it into a gif
MattCraftDotDerp Was just thinking the same thing too.
Wow, I had no idea Slow Burn was connected to Space Oddity & Ashes since I haven't seen the video. Hopefully that one gets uploaded soon, since it has yet to be on an official channel. The lyrics in the Pet Shop Boys remix of Hallo Spaceboy also have connections to Major Tom, and the 'clown' from Ashes appears in the shortened video for "Love is Lost". Bowie really liked keeping his characters intertwined.
I had no idea about the meaning of those moves, but I noticed that coincidences. LOVING THE ALIEN too.
I assume you know, LOVING THE ALIEN is the title of one of his songs.
This song just doesn't age, it's so perfect.
Brilliant
The bass is badass. And so is the drumming.
I agree!! First comment that I had to say something. Deep Groove!! Great ideas!!
Merci 👏👏😁
What about the hysteria on lead guitar by Mr. Fripp ? :)
This song is literally the anthem of my entire extended family. We sing it whenever we see an opportunity and nobody even knows why.
That's very interesting to me.
You have a very cool family my friend.
Lol! That's amazing. I especially love that nobody even knows why 😂
This was a favorite of mine and some college friends back in the 90s... My one friend who had a car would drive us around and we'd listen to this and we'd yell out "BEEP BEEP!" while she beeped the horn... It was a ritual at the time 😂

Its not avant garde really is it! Its mainstream pop music. Still great but ag bands dont play arenas n sell millions or go in top of the pops….. bowie created the illusion of being A.G but was really a mainstream artist with a huge machine promoting publicity etc and huge record labels pushing his product. 😮
The best comment in town. So much sweet sarcasm here...
Very well said
I almost forgot that David Bowie did this classic.
Some say he was ahead of his time. I say he was right on time. In a generation that needed to see what versatility, creativity, and originality should look and sound like. Both he and Prince personified images that people probably felt made them different. In their cases, different was cool.
You Shadow get a like for also mentioning Prince.
Bowie was a musical genius.
So far ahead of his time we still haven't caught up to him. Forever missed.

This is my favourite Bowie video. Kind of grungey too and I noticed that there's a correlation between the dance moves in this video and Blackstar.
True. 10 years earlier than Nirvana. Hadn't noticed that element before.
@ciao214Z y
Maybe not typical grunge but there's a nonchalant garage band feel to some of it
It is a very loud song, a lot of groups from the 90s tried to replicate this sound, especially blur
0:15 = Oooh, Lord have mercy. He was just 🔥 🔥 🔥 🔥 🔥 🔥 !
It is funny how Bowie talk about fashion while he looks half asleep
Beginning of The New Yorker Bowie phase which would be him til his untimely death.AT that time it was the height of the fashion world (at least the country). And it was becoming rather stale. By 80 the glam of Studio 54, and Fire Island parties became boring and drab. Meanwhile Antifashion chic became the rage in areas like the Bowery.
You people are ignorant of what he's even singing about. This is about the "New Romantic Movement" in Britain. A dead give away should be "They do it over there but they don't do it here." Meaning how British pop fans dressed going to the clubs. The New Romantic movement was a pop culture movement that originated in Britain in the late 70s (This song was 1980) involving fans and their style of fashion.
@@BK-yb3qd I don't think Bowie was that badly down on the New Romantics: he hired several of them to appear in the "Ashes to Ashes" video. (The New Romantics were in turn infatuated with Bowie, it seems.) The song is really (at least partly) about something whose name sounds like 'fashion', but isn't...
I think he's meant to look strung out not simply tired. In the first segment he and the bass player (see the blinking at 0:25) both do things which suggest that they're on cocaine.
That's...um...kind of the point of the song.
Bowie's music is like a narcotic. It's strange & off somehow but that's why you can't stop. You get addicted.
Bowie has the best face in profile that has ever existed and ever will. Talk about photogenic, I've rarely seen a bad one out of millions
There will never be anyone like Bowie on this earth again. His voice, music and style was unique.I miss him.
One of the most beautiful men in the world ❤️ 😔
I think the best album cover he did is the one for "Young Americans" (another great song I love).
bowie was a gooner confirmed

Shit goes hard, idk wtf is so funny Goofy...
You trippin, shit goes hard... Sucka motha fucka!
Bowie's haircut in this actually aged pretty well, impressive considering how distinctive fashion was at the time

MTV’s Alan Hunter at 2:15. For those who don’t know who that is, he was part of the original cast of VJ’s for MTV when the network first launched in 1981.
Cool never caught onto that back in the day 😮
I had no idea Robert Fripp is responsible for the alien guitar drill sounds on this track...but it makes such perfect sonic sense now...you can hear the signature "Frippertronic" sounds, similar to many of the guitar effects on King Crimsons iconic _Discipline_ album. 🎸🎼👍

Teenage Wildlife is... not an angst ridden diss track? There is literally like 2 lines in the entire song possibly interpretable as that. If you'd ever

@@kaymuldoon3575 I can honestly say I have never heard a woman say Bowie was attractive. Where I'm from he was usually considered borderline butt ugly.
@port nut Why are you making shit up? My sister is a few months older than Bowie and she thought he was ugly as fuck. The man was just not good looking with his mouth full of typical English rotten teeth.
@@ngc-fo5te He wasn't good looking in a usual sense, that's for sure. I think the reason why so many people were attracted to him anyway is because they found him 'interesting' rather than 'handsome'. The eyes and the androgynous look, and his fashion style. He stood out and was unashamed of his weirdness. Confidence always draws people people in. Also, he had a beautiful voice, charming personality and a unique sense of humour.
I love how this song has two choruses.
Bowie 2023 and forever 💯!
He was so cute in this video🥰 I miss him😔
David Bowie was a Genius🎶🎼🎵🎤🎸🎹
Non ci sono parole!!! Illumina forever fashion!!!
He broke a lot of boundaries
Bowie was supposedly fascinated by G.E.'s "weird" face. G.E.'s also in the "Station to Station" concert scene of the German _Christiane F._ movie. Plus, Bowie had planned to tour in 1981 for this album, after his run with _The Elephant Man_ on Broadway ended. He went on the Tonight Show to perform "Life On Mars" and "Ashes To Ashes" with what would have been the touring band (including G.E.).
Of course, that tour didn't happen because of David freaking out about Lennon's murder (David was, by some accounts, Target #2), so G.E. went on to work with Hall & Oates in 1981 while David calmed down in Switzerland.
Isn't that something? If Lennon hadn't been killed, there probably wouldn't've been "Under Pressure", because David would've been on tour promoting the "Scary Monsters" album. I think he would've rather had his good friend John back over a hit song any day of the week.
I was 15 when this jam came out. It was one of the first music videos I had ever seen. I thought it was a weird video and wack song. Now that I'm older I love it!
Shredding that guitar!!! It went through me like a lightning bolt!!!
Robert Fripp's guitar playing in this song is phenomenal!
Amazing how David Bowie went from this in 1980 to Let's Dance in 1983. You couldn't have two more different styles of music.
Andy JS part of his genius is how he was always reinventing himself...and his music.
His music was all different. I am listening to his seventies stuff. Diamond Dogs is brilliant, but very differnt to Station to Station, which is also brilliant and The Lodger, which is different again.
even more amazing was the homage rendition of _Lets Dance_ that Rob Thomas performed Live at Red Rocks...his powerhouse band really did it justice, check it out! 🎼🎸👍
Modern rock 지금 들어도 전혀 촌스럽지 않은 음악.

He was a trendsetting, groundbreaking artist. One of the all time greats in music.
He is missed.
For those of you who remember who MTV's original VJs were, Alan Hunter is one of the students shown one minute into the video and a few times later on.
I only learned this fun fact yesterday when /hunter was talking about it on his Sirius XM show. The video was shot a few months before he got the VJ gig.
@@erichighsmith He's talked about it several times over the years. He came to NYC to become an actor and this scene showed one of his acting classes. But then, as you point out, he was hired by MTV and the rest, as they say, is history.
