  • How Can I Afford To Live In Thailand, is a question i get a lot and how i earn money to be living in Thailand. I thought we could have a chat about that today and maybe it can help someone how to afford to travel to Chiang Mai, Thailand in the future. My situation is nothing special and i'm just the same as many people back home. I know everybody's situation is different then mine and it's not always easy leaving jobs to travel to Thailand and then going home to find another job.
    I just wanted to share my story of how i do my travel and long stay stints in Thailand. I do have some business income back home but most of my income is from hard work and saving money for travel.
    How to save money for travel.

    This is just my way and i totally understand how hard it is to save in the western world, with family's and rent to pay. I was lucky i could save and do this. Keep that Thailand dream alive, even if it's coming here for a short holiday. Take it easy guys and see you in the next one. 🙏

      @@RM-_ Thanks RM. I wouldn't say the prices have change a lot mate. What did change was the money exchange rates. I'm paying the same rent as i did 6 years a go. Some places have put the food up slightly because of the pandemic.

    Good decision to live now and not later! 13 years ago I sold everything, packed a bag and left to travel. It still is one of the greatest moments of my life and I don't regret one moment of that decision. May the times be challenging now, but I know I gave it a shot and made memories for life. And even though a lot seems bleak right now, my plans are still to save up money and book a ticket to Chiang Mai. I've never felt so free and relaxed anywhere else. And as it turns out now with slowly reaching my 50th; not everyone is made for the regular life. I enjoy my freedom very much. So keep on enjoying the good life today. Looks like you're doing everything right :)

    One of the biggest regrets people have at the end of their lives is that they lived their lives how other people expected them too and not how they wanted.

    I agree that it sounds great to live 6 months there, then 6 months back at home to earn money, to keep everything fresh! I was going to move to Thailand in January 2020 after retirement, then decided to stay only 3 months and travel the world for 4 months before coming back to California to earn more for another trip. I delayed retirement until December 2021 because of the virus because I couldn't travel anyway, and unfortunately Thailand isn't ready for me to come back in January. So I'm traveling to Europe in 2022 instead and my Chiang Mai dream will need to wait until probably 2023, but that's okay.

    • @WalkAboutWayne
      @WalkAboutWayne  3 года назад +2

      I think that is the perfect way of coming here. 6 months in either or come for 3 months a year. I know it can be hard leaving jobs and going back to find a new job also, so i know it's not easy for everyone. Covid is a great example of doing things while you can. Hope you can get back to Chiang Mai soon.

    The only way someone can find their dreams is to bust ass without any regrets. Always live below your means, save, plan and stay focused on the dream. Expect hiccups and challenges, but they can be overcome if you stick with the plan. Do not pull the trigger until you have things properly set up, but once the stars are aligned then go for it, don't hold back. If you don't go for it all that work will be for naught.
    Follow your dreams, but be prepared to put in the work required in order to achieve those dreams. Always be prepared to live below your means, and enjoy the simple things in life. Treat yourself once in a while, but be realistic and reasonable with your expectations. Help others when you can, but always protect yourself. Always keep your options open and have a plan B. But, make no mistake.... in order to get to the promise land there is no escaping the payment of hard work upfront.

    • @WalkAboutWayne
      @WalkAboutWayne  2 года назад +1

      Spot on mate, a man that's got his head screwed on. Be prepared is the way to do it. Get your life in order and leave no stone unturned. There will always be hiccups and problems along the way but that just makes you stronger. One thing is for sure, no one gets anywhere without putting in some graft.
      Great comment Bradly mate. You know the drill buddy.

    Hey, Wayne! I binge-watch your videos for a while and as you said... I was really curious about how you can live there, what you do for work, and so on. Now I know, thank you so much for sharing. Another hard question(s) would be: How do you live your life there? What does a totally regular day look like from start to finish? Now you have this youtube channel to focus on, but before when you didn't have any 'work' (not necessarily in the traditional way) to focus on... how did you feel fulfilled? Do you feel fulfilled now? I hope my questions make sense. I'm planning to come to Chiang Mai as well for the coming cold season in Europe. @@WalkAboutWayne I love my way of life too. I've been traveling thirteen years now, I am early retired and I've heard everybody's "great advice". People tell me," you're too young to be retired" (I won't give my age for a couple reasons), and I have heard as often, "you cannot be single forever" Really? Who's self esteem says that's a fact? Not mine. 😄. I'm thinking these people with such advice have diamonds, girls, businesses or properties ...or they have bills to sell. I don't buy anything if I don't have to and so I think that makes me more prudent than anything else.
      Some people will then try to find something wrong with you to meet the motives behind their reasons for questioning how someone could possibly be happy in life...without their advice. The"best way to do something" is the way that makes you happy if it doesn't hurt others. I'm in no way with sickness or disease. I have no strange predilections. You might even hear, "don't be afraid to succeed". 😄. "Succeed at what?! " Is what I usually ask. I'm successful already. I'm early retired and a freelance ghostwriter on the side. People sometimes are not happy with this answer. Also, some people are never happy.
      I will tell you that my father always says the same thing you did... If you have your health you have everything. Very true! He also has told me for a long time that, "ultimately" friends just want something. The longer I live the more clear his advice becomes.
      Am I in need of a woman at times? Yes, but it's not my style to pay for it. Is there perhaps a woman out there who would be happier in life with me than without me? Definitely there are many! Still, when it comes to the game of "what's in it for me?" ... I'm very easy to please. If a woman I am attracted to is the same way...we can hang out forever. If not, all this advice just makes me laugh 😄
      Words from the wise, those who are more often by themselves are most often wiser. It's lonely at the top. And finally, when someone is of the opinion that there should be more of what you have to offer on the table that what they have to offer on the table, the likelihood they would enjoy doing what it takes to make you happy is almost nil...no matter how simple it is. That makes for "nothing in it for you"
      Have a great day, my friend. Like I said, I'll visit there when the psychopaths are finished trying to run their Marxist plans into being.

    Yeah, couldnt agree more with you about the UK and people being pigeon holed and down right judgemental - been saying it myself for many years, and pretty much do what you do by working hard in England thus funding my own regular five month trips in Thailand, usually December to May and working in the odd Visa Run. Unlike yourself I'm not so much a blogger, instead though a writer of stories about Thailand trips in general and surrounding countries in the form of Travel Guide books as well as taking part in many gigs within Pattaya City with a number of Thai bands. If it wasn't for Thailand I wouldn't have wrote and published ten books, certainly one or two would have been achieved, but as a whole I find the entire country very colourful, inspiring, and ambient and fascinated by its' people (khon Thai) and hope to carry on visiting once this Pandemic starts to loose its' grip if that's possible. Wayne...The Thaiger reported that the Thai Govt. said it could be 8 to 10 years before normal travel returns. It said economy travel would be too risky because of the crowding. But business class would be available. Very disturbing. It is like they had that "elite tourist" plan from the start, as many have suspected. And were willing to destroy millions of lives in the meantime. But most other vlogs think that normal travel can be in one or two years. If ten years then I will need a nurse and wheelchair. But I am in excellent health and condition now. Better shape than many much younger guys. 4-5 days/week at weight and boxing gyms. So hope that govt. guy is wrong. Guess I could save for business class and then stay in a hostel. Actually, I could still afford a nice place . But would need you to body block me from Loi Kroh. Anyway, I have met tourists there 80 or close to it. And doing what you youngsters enjoy. (Different rpms?). I still remember a old guy waiting for his favorite bar girl on Loi Kroh. Then rushing off with her. And I met a 78 year old on Loi Kroh who told me where to go for the soapies. ("You have to go Bob, you have to go"). And remember my 85 year old body builder friend? He was locked down in the Phillipines for 9 months. Gyms were closed. "So I just f... d. What I went there for", he said. So Wayne, stay in good shape, fluent in the language, ed. visa. and other options. Then why not just live in Thailand and Asia forever? You could be another bold, old guy and still a "handsome young man", like me. Ok? We know what it is like to grow old in the west. Everybody just gives up. Not in Thailand.

    You seem like such a wise person. A lot of my personal experiences are similar to yours. I actually bought a van 6 years ago and lived all over the US (mainly west coast) for about a year. It was the greatest time of my life. I think the best time to have fun and travel is when you're young. You never know what tomorrow brings. I gave up a 9-5 crappy job about 6 years ago. Now, I'm just a glorified junk man, and much happier because of the freedom. It's almost spiritual freeing yourself from the idea that you HAVE to work hard every day. Good video, friend. kind thoughts from the US.

      Thanks man, it's all about being happy and doing what you want. I live a simple life but i'm ok with that. To many people wait until tomorrow but tomorrow might never come. Thanks again buddy.

    Good vlog Wayne & IMO your right! We did the same...worked hard then moved to Chiang Mai for 6 years renting out our home in US which let them pay off our mortgage. Then we moved back to US & wow it is now super cheap with no housing costs/mortgage etc Next if we want we can rent again for income & move back to CM etc...BUT also as you said you do not need to do as everyone else with a daily drudge & also you cannot be a full time party animal in Thailand or it will waste you & your health too. But yes live for today because tomorrow is not guaranteed Yes you can have a bit of planning but Life is for Living & doing it while you can still run, bike, hike etc is IMPORTANT! I see so many old tourist whizzing around in tour buses no longer able to swim at beaches ride bikes up mountains etc. So yes you have your head on straight in my humble opinion! Enjoy !!

      Thanks Mike , great to hear your story mate. Sounds like you have some freedom with the mortgage payed off, happy living! Yep, this place can finish you if you fall into the wrong trap. Like you mentioned , keeping healthy , fit and focused is the was of staying here long term i think. So many foreigners have let themselves go here. Thanks Mike.

    Hey Wayne,
    Cool vid, one question I have is how do you stay there in regards to the visa?
    I am making my plans to come over to SE Asia early next year, I've sold my business, car, motorbike and everything I own, no ties now and can't wait! What you say makes total sense and live your life to live!

      Hi Ian, you have a few options mate but Covid has made it a little more difficult for people now. Look to get the Education visa mate, then you can extend that or go on to a volunteer visa. Or, if you have the money, you can get the Elite visa. Live that life mate, good luck Ian. 👌

    I met I guy in Udon in 2018 who did landscaping/gardening for 5-6 months in the UK in the summer (pay not much tax!) and had the winter in Thailand. Suited his employer as well. His wife and kid stayed in Thailand. Made enough dough to keep them all year in the UK.

      That sounds like the perfect job for living this life Craig. I know it's not easy with jobs, doing 6 months here and 6 months work. Sounds like that guy had the perfect way. Thanks.

    After my first trip to Thailand I picked up a second job the week I got home. I payed off my 30 year mortgage in 16 years. Now I'm just waiting for the boarders to open and I'll be back in the land of smiles ASAP.

    this is how I think about it. live now, not chasing dreams till you're 65.that's what they learn you growing up, work hard till you're pension.
    I'm in the same situation, I have no responsibilities to anyone. I am dreaming about this for 2 years now. I see how it goes, maybe I leave after 3 months maybe after 2 years. most people back home will never understand it. if it doesn't work out, then that's my problem at least
    I tried it.

      Hey Piet, hope things are going well man. Spot on what you mentioned mate, just go with the flow and see what happens. you took the chance and followed the dream, that's the main thing.

    don't worry, you've got it right. Living & working in the west to your 70's is a losing proposition as cost of living steadily increases and quality of life steadily decreases. Western governments can't pay off the debt nor support obligations like pensions 100%. Don't be the loser working to retirement late in life and expect income from gov.
