Problem with google translate is often dialects.. Have the same problem here in Thailand sometimes if i use it.
And nowadays it's more attractive to learn chinese and korean than english in vietnam

I was just trying to have a conversation with somebody using Google Translate and it went very badly. I think I offended them.

Troubleshooting google translate for the vietnamese language:
    1. regional differences in accent and pronunciations can really mess up the input into GT if youre using the speech function
    2. the gap between spoken and written Viet is larger than that of English so when you use the speech function it can confuse the writing-based nature of GT

There are different attitudes across regions too. Southerners are curious and accommodating. Northerners are more standoffish and reserved. Most are shy and unwilling to interact but once approached their curiosity comes out.

Vietnamese is a strange blend of Japanese and Philippines. By Japanese I mean they have their pride and is nobody's obedient servant (if you know VN's history of repeatedly fighting back foreign invasion, you'll know what I mean), which to some tourists think they are stand offish. By Philippines, I think they are funny and friendly and truly live a very "communal" life. Maybe this is came out of a history of difficulties so they had learned to rely on friendship and communal support to get through difficult times together.

You have an interesting take on this perspective. I don’t have much experience with the Japanese or the Filipinos and I’m hoping that changes soon.

I can’t never put a finger on it. I am ethically Chinese but never able to form any long sustainable friendship with Vietnamese in the States. We look similar but not very similar if it makes any sense 😅

The Vietnamese and the Chinese are " same same but different " like the Ukrainians and the Russians .
