Always happy to hợp tác with you, pal! Video hay quá, and it really puts an interesting perspective on getting around in VN without knowing Vietnamese.
@@WhatThePho --Sorry, but after watching Phuc Map speaking Vietnamese, I just can't stop saying to myself: "What the Phuc!" He should have changed his name...kkk.
I’ve visited Vietnam at least a dozen times. Never really had a language problem and I tried and failed miserably to learn Vietnamese. Saigon has 2 very good bus lines and there is an app to plan your routes. I was almost always the only “gringo” on the bus and made several wonderful friends! Vietnamese people top my list of favorite “furiners”!😀
I'm going to Vietnam very soon for the first time. Spending three weeks in Saigon. As I start learning Vietnames on this channel, I realise it's extremely simple to learn, especially when it's matched correctly to body language and eye contact.
This video is great, had a smile on my face the whole time. Been back and forth to Vietnam many times because my wife is Vietnamese and I love it there. Hope to be there more when I retire. Both you and Phuc Map are fun to watch. Thank you for this
Living here in Vietnam for over 1 year in Thu Duc City. My Wife is Vietnamese and speaks English. I am trying to understand the language and Vietnamese are kind in helping me but many want to learn English and so strike up a conversation with me and like my accent since I am from the US. They just want to improve their English language skill and I totally understand. In my case my Wife takes care of things here in Vietnam with the money and the language barrier I have. I find Vietnamese are generally very helpful. I do think and I do speak some Vietnamese and I feel it to be helpful in living in Vietnam. One should not live in Vietnam as a foreigner and totally disregard the language and culture and live separately from the Vietnamese populace .
I’m half Vietnamese and my wife is Vietnamese and I still suck at speaking Vietnamese.😂😂. I guess I never felt like I needed to learn the language because my parents spoke English to each other at home (mom is Filipino) and since I was born here in the US English was my first language and it never bothered me that I didn’t know Vietnamese until now.
It depends where you live, this video is filmed in HCMC I think? Which has more people that speak English than some other cities in Vietnam. But totally agree with you and Phúc Mập, yes it is possible to "get by" living in Vietnam without learning Vietnamese, but you are not really LIVING here. The language has a reputation for being difficult but honestly if you really apply yourself and you are fully immersed (don't just hang out with other foreigners) it does not take that long. I moved to Hanoi last April and within 2 months could hold basic conversations with sellers, in cafes and restaurants etc. Obviously I have kept learning in the months since I moved here, yes it's difficult but you just have to keep going. You are really limiting yourself and you are missing out on so many great interactions if you don't at least try!
Yes, you can survive in Vietnam if you could speak English well and MONEY is the key. You can use your fingers to do the job. Vietnamese are very friendly and helpful.
hi van im in Vietnam right now there is no language barrier at all the locals helps us using google translate and some people even speak english. soo good experience
Van, Hi. I am frequent guest in Hanoi and sometimes in Tp.HCM. In respect of GRAB, it is very annoying for the driver to ring you when you cannot speak Vietnamese. This only happens in Vietnam and not other ASEAN countries. But what I learnt is to say if the driver the rings you is to say "một phút" (one minute) or "một phút, cảm ơn bạn" (one minute, thank you) and then hang up. It works every time. Of course be at the address you are supposed to be. I hope this is useful for your viewers! Cheers, Scott
Thank you for this tip, I have basic Vietnamese skills and get nervous when I do not understand a quick question on the phone, this tip will be useful to me very soon
This guy was awesome, great information and his Vietnamese is smooth like a local.your last 2 guest were very helpful for myself as I prepare for a trip in April. Thanks van. now I need to check this guys channel.
I’m flying to Southeast Asia next week, and I will spend a month in Vietnam. I’m in shock after watching this video. 😂 I can’t even say ‘Thank You’ in Vietnamese yet. My first language is Portuguese, and I’m totally relying on Google Translator. It will be a fun experience!
You are such an angel to share what you do. Things seem a little different for me as I go out to enjoy the day... so being able to watch your presentations seems like much more than the message delivery here & the simple entertainment it is. I'm grateful for the help me be smart please / thankyou aspect. The social skills and behavior you've developed really shine... there must be a lot of others that would agree you have a lot goin' for you. thanks, gracias, enjoy
I like your videos a lot,you looks like you having fun creating the content. As a vietnamese adoptee i hope i can have the chance to revisit Vietnam soon, have already been there 6-7 times.Usually icame a long way using sign language and a few words.
Your experience sounds very similar to mine when I visited Germany having studied German for only 1 year in high school. I used to draw pictures in a pocket book to explain many things.
I noticed that when you asked for directions to the pharmacy, the older gentleman and the young girl both responded in pretty good English. That's because they are educated people. English is a required subject in the Vietnamese high school system grade 6 to 12,
Fun video! Hope to see more like this. I have to say I made many friends on Italki in 2018 when I was trying to learn Vietnamese. I ended up meeting my wife on Italki so I can definitely recommend. It’s great for learning and making friends all around the world.
I did not know that about 4 and 13 being unlucky in Vietnam. It is interesting that buildings there do not have the 4th floor in them. Here where I live, buildings do not have the 13th floor. May you and your family have a healthy and prosperous year.
Hi Vun were currently here in HCMC there's evidently struggle to communicate and thanks for your other videos about scams amd how to avoid theme. Cheers
This video was so enjoyable to watch! I hope to return to Vietnam. I went for the first and only time last February. Learning even just a dozen phrases was so helpful and the Vietnamese people responded so positively to me. (I actually learned a few phrases from a language video you did about a year ago.) 👍🏼
I was in Vietnam last year and used Grab frequently. I would get calls often, respond in English and they would hang up. They always showed up anyway except for one time Hanoi when there was confusion (on my part) about the pickup location. I would guess that Americans tip a little better due to our tipping culture.
Just like your friend, my in laws are Vietnamese, but I’m a different type of asian. Mother in law doesn’t know English at all and I should learn some basic phrases to be able to communicate a little with her lol.. for many years I only say hi and bye, but my wife does tell me how to greet. This video does inspire me to learn so thanks Van.. Cam On 😄
We are living in the tech era. You could use google translate from the beginning then when you have blending in the culture, you could start to learn some phase or slang for smooth transition lol
Van Vu , I've been to DaNang, Hue, and Hoi An had no problems getting Grab thru the app . We only speak English and love Vietnam 🇻🇳 obtw we use ride share alover the world
Van, your English is quite excellent overall, but now you really need a brutal coach to move you to higher fluency. I did this for English teachers in Korea and it was a great experience for everyone.
I love Vietnam ❤ very deep ❤from my heart❤.. I can talk in 8 languages but not Vietnamese..... and yes Vietnamese language is very very Hard Hard Hard to learn 😂🎉😅😢🎉😅😢🎉
I dont speak Vietnamese and get by well by texting. Or using google translate. If youre here for a few years can work out but if youre here longer definitely need it.
I would generally use Vasco translator V4 for vietnam as it can handle vietnamese in addition to the 108 languages. And with the SIM card, translation is free for life worldwide. If you then have a 2, everyone can talk in their own language and direct the translator to the other person who understands that language best. Communication can be so easy.
My wife came to the U.S. when she was 6 and only spoke Viet with her parents so she is always nervous that her Viet is not advanced enough to carry on a conversation with say someone on a street about current events or whatever. I don't speak any Vietnamese but I can always pick out when someone else is speaking it in public as I recognize the vowel sounds and cadences of the language.

I love Vietnam. I love the Vietnamese. Wish to go and live there even for a short time, maybe 3 to 6 months. Why i love the Vietnam and the Vietnamese? I live in Morong, Bataan-- where the boat people ( Indo- Chinese refugees- Cambonians, Laotians, and Vietnamese) were settled and camped here from 1980 to 1990's , sponsored by UNHCR. We've/ i've got so many Vietnamese (refugees) friends. In fact i almost, ALMOST, had been married a beautiful Vietnamese lady.❤❤❤
depends what area of the city you are in I suppose.. first time I lived in vn for a yr I couldn't speak a word and got along fine but I lived in D7, Phu My Hung.. I suppose if you live in other areas it would be a good idea to speak some Vietnamese at least.. if someone is gonna live in another country it is always wise and respectful to at least TRY to learn some of the language.. its just common sense really!
I will add this to my to-do list. I live in California, I want to sponsor English books to Vietnamese kids. WHAT THE PHO, let me know if you can help me do that.
