- Ask any hardcore panfish angler and they'll tell you that they love catching redear sunfish. Shellcrackers get bigger and fight harder than any other sunfish and they're getting more and more prolific in the Mid-Atlantic region. Don't miss these great techniques for getting the biggest and strongest fish out of the mill ponds and lakes of the Chesapeake Watershed.

I just finished your first book and want to simply say thank you. First book I’ve read in 20 years ! Can’t stop reading now! I’m on “ The Right Stuff” now!
Thanks, Chris!
For so long, I have mispronounced the name of this fish. As shell-crappie, but I got it now. But let me tell you, I catch these fish using redworms fishing on the bottomand they kill it. These are my favorite fish.
I love them. I had a big one mounted as a kid, caught it when I was 9 or 10. While a small flylike jig that you use is good, for me they prefer live bait more than any other panfish. Also, the spinning rod version to the hopper and dropper is get the smallest floating jerk bait and tying a dropper with a woolly buggers. I had a shit day at work tonight, about 45 minutes of light left. I'd seen them in shallow, limestone areas around a local boat ramp. I caught a couple to cheer me up in as many casts and wrapped it up as I'd like to come back. And yes they're amazing to eat, but like any big panfish I try to let the very biggest go, and keep the female to male ratio close as possible as they're both important
Been catching em in the strip pits in SE Kansas when Crappie fishing lately. Theyre fighters and good eating too.
Caught a 9 inch .6 pound shellcracker at my goto lake on a Rebel Crawfish crankbait. That thing took some line with him too.
We fish for them different in alabama red worms or crickets
How can I get your book on Shellcrackers Benjamin Stewart Sr and Milwaukee, WI 🎣🎣☀️
We catch these in the Florida Panhandle at Howard’s Creek in Wewahitchka, Fl down where Tupelo Honey also comes from. Tupelo Honey extraction is a lovely read also. It can be found only in this area. 😊
Some of the best Shellcracker fishing in the country down there. I was just there a couple months ago.
Hello Hapen, have you ever been to Merritt's Mill Pond in Jackson County? That lake held the world record Shellcracker and currently holds the Florida state record.
I'll check out Howards Creek as it's not too far from me. BTW the Honey Festival in Wewa is cool!
And they absolutely love grass shrimp.
Nice Information!!!
Lake Havasu is the place for monster shellcrackers

Do you know if Shell Crackers are in the Midwest or southeast in Milwaukee, WI
Yes, I have caught some in the Jackson area. I don’t think they get quite as big however.
