Interesting fact: Bluegill (and related species) will change their coloration when stressed! Those vertical lines on their body (like at 3:29) is actually a warning display, meant to deter predators! They are among the fish with the most specialized type of scales, known as ctenoid scales. While on the topic, gars (and others, of course) have ganoid scales, which are basically bone!
    Gotta love em!

Richard you are an amazing fishermen . I live on lake Moultrie in SC. I fish almost every day and thought I knew more than anyone about fishing but you got me beat. Your techniques goes to show what I have said for years. You don't need a fast fancy boat, sonar, or gear to put fish in the boat. I will say one thing. Them shellcrackers are small compared to the ones I catch here in lake Moultrie. It is easy to see how you have so many people watching your you tube videos. Keep up the good work.

I'm a devout Bluegill and Redear fisher myself but have not done much in winter except Ice Fishing in north regions of the country. But Alabama I haven't attempted. After watching you however I'm ready to try. I mainly Fly Fish in Spring but am also
experienced at Jig fishing. I've tossed a Jig to many a Redear or Bluegill on Beds in Spring as well. I like the Squirrel tail Jigs with a bit of worm on it. Caught many a one that way. But as I said Winter fishing Alabama for them isn't my strong suit. I'm going to change that now that I've seen you.

Richard, how much does the color of the jig matter when fishing this way, and will this still work without the jig, just using the nightcrawler? I've never used artificial baits. I've been using only live bait my whole life. I've gotten a lot of great information about using artificials from you, but I don't have much experience.

Color doesn't matter...and yes..just the night crawler will work...just my opinion..I've watched him do this many times..I like a tungsten ice fishing jig with the crawler..less hangups🤷
