the second i saw you pick assistant to the villain i knew it was all over for us
😂😂😂
Same!
@@BooksandLala I thought that too try reading it because of goodreads and I dnf it so slow not much happening plot wise and what did happen was lame 😒
Yes the writing was not for me! I love a good romance and romantasy but this seemed so YA to me in not a good way😂
@@hardbackadventures9644 yup that’s what I thought like Disney but not good 😂
Assistant to the Villain? We never stood a chance.
kayla’s in her eyeball era ✨
She wishes she wasn't.
@@BooksandLala just wait until the first story in Out There Screaming. 👀👀👀👀
@@user-qg7to1uk9i That was my first thought too when I read it this week 😂
Eye 👀 see what you did there
Everyone’s collective dismay over Assistant to the Villain is so funny 😭🤣
You should read the most mentioned books that you haven't read out of the 1000 entries (not for this series but just for fun/us/content!)❤
(Not just top 10 most mentioned)
I knew there was no universe where you would have liked assistant to the villain just based on other booktubers who reviewed it but lol
The amount of people who told me I would *love* it when I was trying to select a book in the romantasy category for my Goodreads video were really setting me up 🥹😂
@@BooksandLalathis is honestly shocking because even without having read it i knew you would hate it 😂
This series was so fun
Thanks so much!! 🤗💕
Assistant to the Villain was a Shrek and Donkey fanfiction. I cannot be convinced otherwise
Kayla’s is the only channel that I’m a channel member of. If you are at all in doubt as to whether becoming a channel member is worth it, let me clear that up: the amount of work, time, dedication, and creativity that goes into Kayla’s content is nothing short of brilliant. The price point is incredibly reasonable especially for the amount of quality bonus content. I’m a huge fan. 💜
i think this shows how entertaining you are bc we don’t have to have the same taste and we still are members🥰
i’d say you and i have similar taste about 15% of the time but you’re 1 of 2 booktubers i still watch after 10 years in the community💙
As soon as I saw the choices for this video vs the choices for extra video for the channel members, I knew the channel members lost. Lol. Sweet Vengence & Master of Djinn is so good! Im sure youll enjoy them more vs the choices here.
Your discussion of the fear and the baby powder made me remember that my son would put stuffed animals and things on his bed to make sure he could tell if a "robber" came into the house and then every morning when he woke up, the things would be moved on his bed and he was convinced someone was coming into the house every night and moving things around on his bed. He never even thought that it was him moving around while he was asleep. He also never told me about it... just quietly freaked out everyday that a "robber" was practically living in our house.
Look at you, fancy gurl with the double camera angle in the car!! It took me by such surprise I audibly laughed. 😂
The bit in the book 4 review about how people who are already anxious and paranoid listening to true crime would freak them out more is exactly why I don't engage with true crime. My anxiety already has me cataloguing who is standing around me at any given point in time and paranoid that someone was going to break in and hurt me. I cant put myself through listening to all of the thousands of ways that other women have been excruciatingly hurt without causing myself a nervous breakdown. I appreciate you talking about it because people never acknowledge it.
The funny thing is... you are by far the best booktuber I have found. I'm just drawn to all your videos, so creative, so relatable. I love your content. But. We have pretty opposite taste lol. There are a couple of your 5 stars that I've loved, but typically we don't read or like the same things lol.
The best way to end my last day of my bachelor's program! ❤
Omg congrats on your completion!! 🎉
i've been following you for so long and never commenting (weird youtube anxiety moment i suppose?), but watching this series while im cramming for bar prep has been so soothing
six deaths of the Saint was one of my top reads from last year, I'm SO glad you liked it
I wonder if you would like Simon Jimenez's second book better, The Spear Cuts Through Water. That book was unbelievably beautiful, and it's fantasy rather than sci-fi. Some of the most gorgeous writing and innovative structure I've ever seen in a fantasy novel. Also, it got pretty weird at points!
Cosigning this. It's beautiful and not as straightforward as The Vanished Birds.
yess but its quite action packed and gorey, still, the prose oh my goodness, one of my top fav fantasy standalone
Yes! This book is absolutely phenomenal and one of my favorite reading experiences of all time!
I read The Spear Cuts Through Water last month and loved it! wow what an intricately woven tapestry of a story. and stunning cover too!
Oh absolutely agree!! I enjoyed The Vanished Birds, but The Spear Cuts Through Water went immediately into my list of all-time favorite books. I still haven't recovered.
If you ever make an exception to graphic novels, Uzumaki is such a horror classic that deserves its cult following.
I loved this video series so much this year! It was so fun to watch the different social media apps and members compete against each other 😊
Loved this seriessss so much! 💗💗 I have jotted down a few books for my yearly TBR!
Excellent series Kayla, you had me invested the whole way through 😊
The Alix E. Harrow short story was in the Best American Sci Fi and Fantasy 2023 collection!! They are edited by John Joseph Adams who I think you've enjoyed other anthologies by and I really think you'd enjoy BASFF!
I am obsessed with your videos. Books, data, and stats. LOVE!
I caaaan't wait for the Besties Exclusive! A Dangerous Collaboration was my favorite of last year and is in my top 3 of all time favs!
I’m looking forward to the besties video because you’ll be reading Veronica Speedwell, so I’m like 90% confident it’ll be a good time for all of us 🙌
21:50 Assistant to the Villain works well as a 1-3 minute TikTok skit, but as a book it fell flat. I rarely DNF a book, but I didn't even get to chapter 4 in that one!
i’m really excited for Interesting Facts About Space but also nervous because i loved Everyone In This Room Will Someday be Dead SO much. i thought the MC in her debut was the most relatable character ever so i hope that keeps up in this book!
ETA: i was just as paranoid about being kidnapped or killed as a child. i’m so glad to hear i wasn’t alone 😂 wtf was wrong with us? (i do still struggle with this a little bit).
So glad you liked The Sixth Deaths of the Saint. It was a 5 star read for me and I still think about it. It also made me cry.
Just started watching and I'm so nervous for the besties!!
I’ve never heard anyone give a positive review of Assistant to the Villain.
Watch Katie Coleson, she loved it!
I loved it! I hate how people are being so cruel about it
Oh no! Please read As Long as the Lemon Tree Grows. It’s YA and I feel it should be required reading-it’s so beautiful.
I actually think she'd love it from what I've heard people say about it
This video is so validating to me because you're actually my favorite Booktuber. But most of the time we have like...zero books in common that we both like. So I have a whole TBR of books specifically that you have given like 1-3 stars that I know I will probably love haha
Loved the car transition shots!
Fun video!
Gorgeous mountains! 😍
Oh I hate second person narrative. 😒
School trip skiing sounds amazing! 😃
This was great!
I have to know how many hours these lanyard graphics took to make
loved this!! maybe sometime you could read books from booktubers you have the least in common with.. as an experiment lol
as someone who is currently in treatment for OCD your description of interesting facts about space sounded a lot like that to me!
"For you math lovers, I did do the percentage"
Makes my math heart really happy haha ❤
Loved the video as always!
Good morning Kayla happy new year to you and your loved ones and I hope that 2024 brings you a lot of love and happiness
I personally love assistant to the villain!! But that’s my personal opinion! I’m just glad that you or no one in the comments are fully hating on the book or the people who read it. I get how different the books for some people
My cousin has ocd and is always sharing those tiktok videos with me you refer to about women’s safety. I really like how you bring up the fact that this may be more harmful than beneficial to some.
what the heck am i supposed to do with my free time now that this series is over!? love your videos, can't wait for the next!
The way I tried to catch my name when you scrolled through the list hahaha
Hahaha same!!
I read Simon Jimenez's other book "The Spear Cuts Through Water" last year and was sooo good and a fantasy.
It was also sooo weird to get into because he uses a mix of 1st, 2nd and 3rd person views which takes a bit to get used to but makes sense once you figure it out.
Okay so I have to know if you had two cameras in the car or if you were moving the camera everytime you had a reaction 😂 great video! ❤️
some of these picks.. idk. justice 4 the members! 😅
this was a very fun way of doing the favorites video and I can't wait for the members one ^_^
feeling very smug that you choose the thumbnail that i also liked best ahaha 🤭💗
Maybe you should do the books that are the most read by besties that you didn’t read yet??? Like the ones that show up the most in the spreadsheet that are unread by you- that may have better results 😝
We will never have overlapping tastes, but A Treacherous Curse was a top 3 of the year for me, so I can't wait to see Veronica Speedwell in the besties bonus video!
Speaking of short stories, I would love to hear more about your favourite ones!
Ooh you went with pink
Ill actually watch this tomorrow since its past midnight
“Under the light of the Chevron” killed me 😂
In case it hasn't been mentioned yet, Six Lives of the Saint is very loosely based on Joan of Arc (who was basically thrown under the bus by the man she helped make king once he no longer needed her, so I ate Six Lives of the Saint UP. So good.).
You should do a follow up ep where you read the most commonly read / liked books by the besties
Yes, represent Indiana!!
What lipstick are you wearing 29:20 in when you are talking about Interesting Facts About Space ? Looks so good on you!
They Were Here Before Us is a WILD book 🤣 i liked some of the short stories more than others.
I don't know why but the "MORE EYEBALLS?!" took me out HAHAHA
I've been watching all the episodes of this series, it's so fun! I can't wait to read Interesting Facts about Space, I'm one of those girlies that loves everything Emily Austin writes 😆😇
it’s sanremo week here in italy (biggest music event in the country, a bit of a fever dream), but you can bet i am watching this at 2am because i cant wait until tomorrow
Sorry besties 😭 but I ate up Assistant to the Villain. Ill do better this year I swear!
ilysm bestie and I'm so happy you and this book have each other 😂💕
Me too!!!
Oh good! I bought the physical book so I’ll glad someone liked it haha x
not me being your exact demographic- a 29-year-old named Jessica lol
I love it!!
So proud of BookTok making second place. 🥺
I am glad to see you trying to give Uzumaki a chance even though it's not your thing. Also, happy to see that some of the books in this video were also mentioned in the book tube one! So I think you chose the right books but some of them didn't align to your taste 😊 😊
28:07 Your doors didn't lock? Thats the most Canadian thing I've ever heard 😄
not Canadian so much as my parents just wouldn't fix anything once it broke in the house lol
Great video!
Joined too late to participate in this, but still excited for your thoughts on A Master of Djinn 💖
Thank you for including me!! 🥰 I’m so interested to see what you think of a Master of Djinn in the spin off video!
I’m so happy you liked The Six Deaths of the Saint! It was my first 5 star of the year, so beautiful 😊
I have really enjoyed Alix E. Harrow's novels and I didn't even know about this novella. I immediately went and bought it for my Kindle.
that's a collection of seven different authors. The Six Deaths Of The Saint is the only story written by Alix in that collection
@@wiktoriagrochola3256 Ohhhhh okay. Thank you so much! I didn’t look too closely at the others in that specific series 😭 but I can’t lie, I wish they were all by Alix because of how much I loved this short story
@@FaeryLaume When I read this short story, I didn’t even notice I own another one of her books. I was so excited when I realized 😂
New Mexico bringing the first star makes my dinky little heart happy.
Well now i cant go to sleep, like legally
I'm gutted you didn't like Uzumaki as I think it is one of the greatest horror stories of all time. Definitely understand it's not for everyone though! It jas some intense imagery that will live in my head forever lol.
Omgggg I love this ❤
Besties! It's our moment to ✨shine.✨
I don't know if I'd say y'all shined here 😂
@@adventureswithmadison 😂😂😂
@@adventureswithmadison I may have been a bit eager in my comment before finishing the video. Let's pretend I said nothing.
I love that you have a bestie from NM...that's where I'm watching from.
🙌🏽
Assistant to the Villain gave me those Ali Hazelwood vibes so I dnfd at 10%
lala 😭 manga can be fun, i swear
edit: thank you for trying!
I think you should give Kingdom of the Wicked a go for Romantasy. It’s a murder mystery plot set in province Italy where the FMC and Wrath the sin personified have to work together. The world is based of the seven circles of hell and the story is actually really interesting
I think she also read and liked another book by Kerri Maniscalco
KAYLA! Reccommending you read How the Word is Passed by Clint Smith on audio - he's Hanif's poet bestie and his books are all 5 stars!!!!
Assistant to the Villain is on my tvr because my sister in law loved it but I am so nervous about romantasy. Just not sure it will work for me
this was so much fuuuun i can't wait for next year's race already, it coincides very nicely with awards season 😂
I feel like this video is the perfect example to show us your experience with the besties/members tbr jar 😂 (pls continue with the jar, love it)
I'm so crushed you couldn't get into Uzumaki. I love Junji Ito's work so so much~ but I know he's not for everyone.
I think you could like Beautyland by Marie-Helene Bertino. Light sci-fi that’s not fully explained, it’s a story about being human and life and love
I loved Assistant to the Villain and I was sure you would hate it.
I would love to see what you would think about Simon Jimenez’s other book, it’s one of my favorite books of all time and I just want everyone to read it. Haven’t read The Vanished Birds yet, though, so I couldn’t say with confidence if it would go differently, but man, The Spear Cuts Through Wanter literally changed my life. The writing and the structure are quite literally out of this world, and the themes of the book are so beautifully talked about, it's like a love letter to all of those who are excluded of the quote on quote "official" lore, history or mythology of the country or culture they come from, like queer people, or the children of immigrants, and how those people have always existed and found their place and loved, even when people refuse to talk about it. so so good, i'll be annoying about it until everyone has read it.
I love ‘the six deaths of the saint’! I actually just listened to it yesterday. I am loving the whole ‘Into Shadows’ collection. I am scared to read assistant to the villain now 😂 I’m supposed to start it for a February book club pick.
Glad to see the video but sad that I don't get to see you read any of the fantasy books I'm interested in
Unreconciled by Jesse Wente is worth a read!
Choosing Assistsnt to the Villain over Uzumaki is wild 😭
I LOVE Assistant to the Villain but I also love how you're not swayed by things you have seen and heard before reading a book! 😊
I find myself wondering if you have read Hench. Not a romance but villains and superheroes. I loved it.
I hated Hench 😭😭😭
Add another one to the Christina column bc that's what chris is short for lmao
I’m so excited that you chose my pick!! I’m sorry you didn’t love it but I’m glad it wasn’t a total bomb bc I know Eric LaRocca can be a risk 😅
Buddy the elf energy😂 I’ve thought of picking up that book a few times and I’m so glad I didn’t
omg shout to besties named sarah/sara we are UNITED
this series was so fun!! its so cute how many of us had emily wilde in our top picks lololol
Let's go besties
another eyeball 🤣
