You just HAVE to read Emily Wilde’s Encyclopedia of Faeries ! The main character is clearly clearly autistic, it’s on the cozy fantasy side of fantasy with low stakes and a big focus on characters and folktales and it’s set in winter. Also we read her journal entries and get to see how she thinks and I’ve never felt so seen as a late diagnosed woman 😅 you will love it
There was a loss in my family this week and I haven't picked up any books since then because my attention span is shot, so comfort youtubers (like you 💞) have been all I'm taking in right now- thank you so much for creating such a cozy corner of the internet that people can turn to when life gets hard ❤
Hi! Maybe when time has passed and you're ready, if you want to learn more about grief, I really recommend The Grieving Brain. It helped me understand why everything was so confusing and painful when my parents passed away.

If you get an itch at trying fantasy again, I think reading The Girl Who Drank the Moon would be a good choice for you. I have the same issue with some high fantasy novels being a little over my head. I thought it was such a fun and easy read!

the way Amina Al Sirafi is def in my top books of the year! There’s so many great YA fantasy books to read as well, it’s a great place to get into fantasy!!
I just finished reading Crying in H-Mart bc I know it’s a book you’ve recommended (I sobbed) and now I’m moving on to another Ali recommendation, A Psalm for the Wild Built! I’m so excited! I hope I enjoy it as much as you did!
Also I’m so close to finishing my reading goal! I’ve now read 46/50 books for the year and I’m trying to go easy on myself and enjoy the books I’m reading and not fly through them. If I reach my goal I’ll feel ecstatic, but if I don’t reach it I still read more than I’ve ever read in a single year and that’s SO worth celebrating! I’ve taken on your mantra of “if you’re reading, you’re winning” so no matter the number that’ll be what I tell myself on new years! 🎉
12:33 cozy murder mysteries or 'cozies' are actually a huge genre! there's SO many niches interwoven with murder mysteries. baking is a popular one but there's also ones surrounding bookshops, knitting, cheese making, soup shops, gardening, candle making, etc. it's kind of a strange genre but I love it
I feel the same about Fantasy books. When I got back into reading a few years ago I thought I’d be a high fantasy girlie but every book I picked up was so boring or too difficult to understand. My favourite fantasy series to this day is the one I read when I was 8 😭 (Skulduggery Pleasant). I kept comparing these very high stakes, detailed, beautifully written books to my silly little middle grade series and I kept preferring the latter. I eventually realised it’s because these books take themselves too seriously. I like my stories to really be about the characters and for them to have fun or be silly or quirky. And it’s annoyingly hard to find series like that. Murderbot is my other favourite series now and it only took me 14 years to find it. But it solidified that theory for me because even though the Murderbot books are high stakes, Murderbot itself has such a strong sarcastic narration style that it’s just a lot of fun to be inside its head.
HOWEVER! I recently picked up a serious fantasy story which was a massive success, it even became one of my favourite books this year. And the reason I picked it up was because it was about one of my interests (angels!). And I picked up another fantasy book that had angels as a theme and I also loved it! And then I developed an interest in robot characters after reading Murderbot and I’m also having a really high success rate focusing on books about that. SO I think you too could actually be a fantasy reader, maybe you just need to find something more specific to what you’re already interested in. Then it’s a lot less work :D

Thank you for sharing a lot of your life and hobbies and the things you’ve loved with us! Your channel has become such a sweet source of comfort for me this past year, especially when I started struggling with chronic pain and my mental health dipped.
You should really know that the positive energy and mindsets you reinforce in your videos, even on your bad days, really stick and that you’ve at the very least touched my life in a very positive way. Thanks to you I started getting up more, I started to celebrate the small victories and that encouraged me to continue those habits, I’ve learned (and am honestly still learning) how to be okay with the fact that there are days where I just can’t do as much as I once could but that’s OKAY and there’s so much I can still do from my home to enrich my life. These are all positive mindsets that YOU have encouraged into me through countless videos and me, my parents, and my therapist (lol) all say thank you!! I hope you and Laurens have a wonderful Christmas with your cattos (if you celebrate!) and that you continue to keep the positive and healing mindsets you’ve taught to me. Children Book REC: Momo by Michael Ende
It is originally German, though it is set in an unnamed Italian city. It is about this young girl who lives in an abandoned amphitheatre and invents game with all her friends, the local children. There is a plot about "the grey man" who run a "time bank" and basically get all the chill living their calm lives people into having to feel more productive until noone has time to play or look after the children anymore and so. Momo is the only one who seems to be more or less resistant to this. There also is a tortoise who's name is Cassiopeia, who can talk by writing short letters on her back. So what's not to love.
I won't spoil more of the plot, but its great theme is the value of time and taking things slow (There's No Rush Snail Shirt vibes), the value of children's perspectives, these simple but deep thoughts about life, friendship and the value of play and importance of really listening to someone. It has a few scenes that wouldn't have been super necessary imo, so it ends up not being the thinnest / MOST time-respecting book, but it is by no means super long or boring and the themes are right up your ally (ha). Would love to see what you think of it!
OMG, highly recommend the Swedish (original) A Man Called Ove film!
I really loved Remarkably Bright Creatures recently. I have to admit I mostly picked it up because of the cover (I have the white version). But it was such a heartwarming story!
My favourite children's/middle grade books are the Kingdoms and Empires series by Jaclyn Moriarty. So cozy, atmospheric and low stakes adventure. I love it so much!
Allison, I've been following your channel since the begining of the year and you mentioned a graphic novel series so many times it actually stuck with me in a good way. So, I'm glad to say that I took your advice and I read The Tea Dragon Society last night before bed and got absolutely emotional, cryied plenty of happy tears. I wasn't expecting to be this moved by a graphic novel since I'm not used to the genre but I've been trying it out for a few months and finally I found the perfect book for me, THANK YOU!

i wanted to recommend you my favourite childhood series - it’s Pettson and Findus by Sven Nordqvist and is about an old man who adopts a cat, who learns how to speak. it’s a picture book, so it’s definitely for a very young audience, but whenever I remember it, i feel warmth. It could be hard to find, because it’s not that popular, but the most famous one is “Pancakes for Findus” and it’s about the cat’s birthday :) love you!!

If you want to try some more YA fantasy I would recommend the Raybearer duology by Jordan Ifueko! I think it does a good job of introducing characters/plot to intrigue you and to make sure you don't get too lost! It's also just an absolutely incredible story. Love the video, the vibes are lovely as always!

i picked up sheets, the graphic novel and absolutely devoured it!! the next day i got the other two and finished them after i got home from the book store. they were such heartwarming stories about vital topics for young people that i could enjoy at 23 years old.

Rocky absolutely rocks…I listened to the audio and the way Rocky was voiced was fantastic.
I ended up more interested in the grieving woman and what her personality was; I didn’t care about X or her mind messing.
We just picked up ‘The Myth of Normal’ and my partner is really into it. Very encouraging to hear your enthusiasm for it as well.

I’m in my second year of single mom hood and dealing with issues with my chronic illnesses and every time I’m having a rough day I watch you and it truly brightens my day. You’re wonderful thank you for sharing 😊 I wanted to recommend a very old YA book I read as a teen that I still think about today it’s called How It Ends by Laura Weiss. On the back it says it’s about a teen girl named Hannah who is fretting over awful teen love…but who cares about her, it’s really the super wonderful story of her grandmothers life and it’s so amazing! On Amazon it’s says the book is about how love ends, and how it’s starts, and how it endures. Yes perfect description! Total before the coffee gets cold vibes!

When you talked about the type of fantasy you enjoy, it made me think of the series Rangers, it’s a YA and an easy going story that doesn’t have huge info drops on how its world works, you learn in stages as the books go on, and the plot is not super complex, it flows slowly and nicely while presenting the universe. Don’t know if you have read it already or ever heard of it, but I just thought of leaving the recommendation here :)
It’s a very wholesome but adventurous journey with one of the best character developments I’ve ever read, and I think you could like it if you ever wanna give it a try ❤
If you like Abby Jimenez you will love 'On Rotation' by Shirlene Obuobi. So good! Themes of self respect, nurturing your friendships, and a smart cabable main character figuring out what kind of doctor to be while falling in love with a sweet guy who volunteers at the hospital.🇬🇭
Ally, it is always such a joy spending time with you! I've had my nose in too many contemporary books of late and felt the need to return to Victorian England, most especially London. My first George Gissing, "The Odd Women" is not disappointing! It's funny how a certain genre of literature can feel like home. If you ever feel like visiting "us", me and the Victorians, I highly recommend Wilkie Collins, "The Woman in White." Three of my bookish friends are getting a copy this year as it makes for a great winter read. Merry Christmas and all the best to you and your wee family in the coming year! ❤🎄🎉

My all time favourite children books were all by Annie M.G. Schmidt, who was a Dutch author. The best ones (imo) are Pluk van de Petteflet, Floddertje and anything Jip & Janneke!

My absolute favorite children's book (and the book that made me love reading) is Ruby Holler by Sharon Creech!!
I love that book too!! It absolutely ruins me on every single reread
First, I’d looove an anticipated releases video. I’m terrible at following what books are coming out when and definitely rely on booktube. I do have some middle grade recs. The Penderwicks is such a wholesome series about sisters and friends they make. I also love The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate, there’s a sequel too but the grandfather/granddaughter relationship made me cry it was so sweet. And this year I started a middle grade horror series called Small Spaces. It’s definitely creepy but the unlikely friendship trio and the protagonist’s dad made it oddly cozy.
I read The House at the Bottom of the Lake by Josh Mallerman and it creeped me out!! I was covering my eyes while reading like I was watching a scary movie 🙈 also I TOTALLY agree about My Best Friend’s Exorcism, the best thing about it was the cool cover.
ALSO some of my favorite middle grade books are The Mysterious Benedict Society series by Trenton Lee Stewart, and Greenglass House by Kate Milford (kinda a cozy mystery), and also the Gail Carson Levine fairy tales (The Princess Test was my favorite when I was younger but I’m not sure how it holds up nowadays!)
i finally read the monk and the robot duology this month and loved it!! i don’t think i’ve ever read anything so low-stakes in my life and it was a very pleasant experience for me :) i also spent almost two whole months working my way through foster dade explores the cosmos by nash jenkins. it reallyyyy made me put my thinking cap on but i ended up liking it a lot.
"Maame" by Jessica George was my favorite in December. It's beautiful and I think you might like it. 👍

in terms of children’s books i can highly recommend Momo by Michael Ende! It deals with time/ how we spend/ use it, the act of listening, human connection and has an absolutely loveable cast of characters. (and has some good criticism of consumerism on top) Its one of my all time favourite books and seems like something that’d be up your alley as well! (I can equally recommend the cartoon thats based on it, i have lovely memories of watching it as a child
Please read Women Talking by Miriam Toews! Heavy subject/content warnings, but so beautifully written! Great character study on women in traumatic times.
I loved the Shadow of the Fox trilogy this year, it's a YA fantasy inspired by Japanese mythology and the cast of characters was so fun and diverse, would recommend :)
For fantasy, I want to recommend the 'His Dark Materials' trilogy.
I love fantasy but have focus issues and I always loved reading these, starting in high school and still now. A lot of great themes to mull over!

For middle grade/youth lit, definitely do The Wee Free Men by Terry Pratchett. I've mentioned it before, but oof it's so good. Talk about great life lessons and easy-to-access fantasy!

Yeeeessss I love middle grade/YA series !!! I think you would absolutely devour both the Mysterious Benedict Society series and the A Series of Unfortunate events series if you haven't read either one yet and they both have TV series too!!!! Also The Penderwicks is a book that I know could potentially become a fave for you. Super cozy story about 4 sisters on vacation with their widowed dad in a cute cottage on little adventures. Love your videos and I'm happy to see you feeling better.

I highly recommend, The Thing About Jellyfish by Ali Benjamin. Its a middle grade about how children process grief. I cried so many times reading it and I'll never forget that book.

I can't remember if I've mentioned these before, but the Lady Astronaut series from Mary Robinette Kowal is a great sci-fi trilogy that I highly recommend!
