"CBT feels like fancy gaslighting"--oh my gosh, yes! That's how I've felt about it. Therapists in my past will be like 'tell yourself the thought is illogical' or 'remind yourself you're okay' when you feel pain. Like I know that already...doesn't take away the thoughts or the anxiety though, especially when it comes to pain management and trauma surrounding chronic pain. If you ever find a workbook (apart from the DBT workbook you used a couple years ago) that fits better with neuro-spicy peeps, please let us know!!! Wishing you all the best! from, a fellow spoonie
I don't know enough about CBT to know if it's fancy gaslighting, but this book sounds like it's 100% toxic positivity. Clearly, it's written by someone who doesn't have chronic pain or any actual neurospiciness. Thanks for letting us know about it so I didn't accidentally buy $25 worth of paper kindling for the campfire.
i’m a psych major and took a counseling class in undergrad. even just learning about CBT, i was like this seems like bs? i later learned that CBT can be super helpful for some people, but it often does nothing for people with autism and/or ADHD because the self awareness is too real. it’s been game changing for me to realize CBT doesn’t work for me and searching out therapists who will try different methodologies with me. on this same note, i absolutely can’t do mindfulness or meditation stuff because it literally makes zero sense to my brain, but i know people who it works for!
CBT did wonders for my spiraling thoughts. My therapists told me to focus on truths and really helped my social anxiety. But it makes no sense to me for her pain. Pain does not just go away. I can't think how CBT would help with that. 🤷♀️
Just popping in to say that myself and my 6yo son just finished Garlic and the Vampire and Garlic and the Witch on your recommendation, and we LOVED THEM. So stinkin’ cute
Hello! Fellow autistic training as a therapist here! I have been incredibly keen to stay the hell away from CBT for the exact reasons you said in this video. It takes the overthinking we do already and warps it in just not a fun time. I'm hoping to train in PCT (Person Centred / Client Centred Therapy) because the whole point is that the client chooses the direction and all of the literature focuses on helping the client find the way that works best for THEM regardless of whether you as the therapist agree. It's a really challenging way of working on the therapist end, but as I've experienced it as a client too, it's great. Bonus points that PCT therapists are discouraged from giving advice unless the client specifically asks for it, and even then you have to be careful, so no unsolicited chronic illness advice from therapists is a win
also autistic psych professional here! i’m not in the clinical field, but i did take a counseling class in undergrad. i remember being confused about why CBT was such a big deal. i’ve always been far more intrigued by PCT. i’ve been in therapy since i was 10. when i was 18, my therapist died. after that, i never really found one that worked for me again. until recently! my new therapist takes a PC approach and in her words “is a passenger in my car” she says she’ll “give direction if i get lost or ask for help, but i’m driving .” i’ve really made so many breakthroughs thanks for her! i say all of this because i respect and appreciate all that CBT does for some people, but it’s crucial for those in the field to explore other ways to treat neurodiverse brains.
PROJECT HAIL MARY IS MY FAVORITE BOOK OF ALL TIME!!!!!!! it's incredible ALSO I highlyyyy recommend the audio book, it makes the whole experience 20x better!!!!!
Sometimes I'll feel down on myself when I watch these vlogs because they're so high quality, and so well put together, but then I remember that I only started making content on RUclips two months ago and I'm already improving a lot, and comparison is the thief of joy!! Therefore I can enjoy Ally's vlogs, and still work on my own at the same time!!
I'm currently house sitting so I'm home alone, and I cannot even begin to explain how wonderful it is to pop this video on as I go about my daily chores. It feels like I'm listening to a friend. The atmosphere your videos bring is so lovely and puts me in a really good mindset, especially as someone who also suffers with chronic illness. Thank you for being you (and giving me so many amazing book recs!)❤
Omg im so excited for junior high!!!!! Tegan and sara went to my junior high and high school and idk ive always felt very akin to them, SO FOR TILLIE WALDEN TO WRITE WITH THEM? MY GUY I GOTTA READ
Crying whenever you have to imagine a life without your mother hits home so much. Mine sadly died 4 years ago and I'm regularly crying reading stories about mother-daughter relationships. Now I've added some new books to my TBR :D
my autistic only bookclub did project hail mary last january it was great! i'm normally scared of big books but i powered through it in like 3 days and it was so fun also i love the idea of reframing book buying as investing in your special interest bcause sometimes i feel silly about how much time/money/energy i spend on my silly little obsessions but it keeps us happy and living!!
“CBT to me is just very fancy gaslighting” is the realest thing ever as an autistic chronically ill person myself! Very very sadly had to break up w my therapist after she refused to pivot away from CBT😭 but it just doesn’t compute for my brain ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
fellow chronically ill girlie, wide awake since 2am from being in ✨pain✨ but feeling the littlest bit of joy and comfort getting to watch this vlog!!!! thank you for all that you do💓⭐️
the CBT book 🥲 alsoalso!! i forgot to mention (from another vid!!) that there’s non-magnetic metal piercing jewellery that’s completely chill with ur scans/MRIs, definitely check maybe with your dr bc it’s so annoying to take them out all the time and now i never have to pop my labret or my plugs out etc ☺️ (also yes i’m comfort watching the backlog in a duvet ball ok)
Girl! I have never related to anything more than what you were saying about cognitive overstimulation. I love that there’s a word to describe that feeling!
I love Mouse Guard! I was really happy to discover it last year, because it reminded me of the Redwall novels I read as a kid, but with the bonus of adorable illustrations. And as a fox, I feel like I'm now legally obligated to read Middlewest.
Ally, I think you’re winning at life. Your cats adore you and are two of the most affectionate cats I’ve ever seen, which tells me that you’re an amazing mother to them. Your husband loves you and you love him after many long years together. You are radiant and bringing joy and necessary messages to your audience, helping us, in turn, to be radiant as well. Thank you for existing ❤ Edit: I think your cooking content is beyond amazing
❤📚❤️...I cried with you..."And Every Morning the Way Home Gets Longer and Longer" by Fredrik Backman broke me! Laughed over the worm story and shared with my daughters...their favorite movie back in the day!
Migraines are definitely not a "one size fits all" with pain. I sometimes get vertigo and walking would not be good advice, but sometimes I also benefit from physical activity. Its definitely a personal journey with pain and what each individual can handle and what actually helps. For me, one migraine attack can be better after hydration or food, others I get to the end of my list of "helps" and just have to endure until its over.
omg, I love mouse guard! It has a RPG version you can play which is how I know it! THERE'S A BOOK THOUGH EXCUSE ME???!! Major Redwall vibes. I haven't been this happy since finding out there was a tea dragon society card game 😂
CBT /IS/ FANCY GASLIGHTING!!! I highly recommend DBT books (Dialectical Behavior Therapy.) I don't know if there's one for pain, but it's essentially a little bit of CBT but mostly mindfulness. CBT never worked for me and neither did regular therapy. The only thing with DBT is it's a lot of work and practice, but worth it imo. Hope you find a book that works
I'd never heard of cognitive overstimulation before SO interesting! Rumi headbutting you was heart melting 😭 Really excited to pick up the employees! I hope you love something in the water it was the perfect turn your brain off book for me :)
i’m so comforted by you saying “this requires a bigger brain than i possess” because i’m intellectual i’m very specific ways. and often intellectual/metaphorical what have you kind of prose just goes over my head and it makes me feel like an absolute idiot. i’m glad i’m not alone.
i totally agree with you’re feelings on CBT. i’ve always felt so gaslighted by the therapists that have used it with me. like “having bad thoughts and feelings, don’t 😊”
Hi Ally so happy you graced us with the most wholesome cozy bookish content once again! Heads up, the Ana Luisa link in your description needs to be edited! Hope you’re well, sending hugs 🌈🦋♥️
55 minutes and 55 seconds of bliss!!! Such a good time when the favorite youtuber uploads :) and the sims 2 music was so good!! a propos Tillie Walden: In the bookshop i work at, there is a tarot coloring book illustrated by her!! its really pretty :)
If you want another book about moms that will destroy you, I just finished Please Look After Mother by Kyung-Sook Shin and I sobbed at the ending. And I rarely cry while reading.
i watched this whole video, doing other things while watching and listening along and was absolutely astonished and betrayed when it ended despite it being almost an hour long😭 i could listen to you talk and watch you go about your week for hours. your videos feel like a warm hug and a safe space. please take good care of yourself, we all love and care about you
Hey Ally, hope you're doing well!! I recently finished Shady Hollow (just saw it on your shelf). It was super cozy but the murder mystery is super predicable. I still think it was worth the read bc it's relaxing and cute. Much love xx
the Just Dance hype is so REAL, my personal favorites from childhood are "Baby One More Time" and "Dynamite", my dad used to rent them for my sister and I on Redbox
Allie! Seeing you back and smiling, dancing, laughing is such a ray of sunshine! Seeing you smile, makes me smile and although it’s been a tough time recently, I’m so happy to see you back. Your presence on here is so valued and you make such a deep impact to all of us who love and care about you. Continue shining and striving, stay happy and healthy and never stop being the amazing person that you are! 😘❤️
I just can't thank you enough for your content, ally! it's been a terrible week -- health problems, sleep problems, pet death, lots of stress and disruption of my routine. I've been STRUGGLING and feeling so down. this video felt so comforting and lovely and again I really can't thank you enough for this cozy corner of the internet you have created.
so i’ve been recently diagnosed as autistic at age 28 & CBT didn’t help much in the past, but with my current therapist it’s soooo much better. i can’t imagine applying that philosophy to chronic pain 😭
Omg this video is the treat of the century!!!! A 55 minute vlog from my favourite comfort youtuber 🤯🥺❤️ I am savouring this video like good cheese, I watch 10 minutes every time I need it and boy it is good. 🥰
oh you're just like me. I can handle very dark, depressing themes in media without my eyes so much as watering but the moment a mother-daughter theme is shown, ESPECIALLY one where like you said, makes you imagine a world without your mother, I break down so quickly. literally bawling every time no matter what kind of media or if I even like the characters. I love my mom. it hurts too much to even think about that possibility ;___;
i felt the exact same way about my brilliant friend. didn't dnf it but also didn't enjoy it that much. i had such high expectations because lots of people seem to love it, but oh well, it happens. loved this long vlog so much, it was super fun to watch 🧡✨
I LOVEEEEE a long vlog, it gives yummy food inspiration, getting things done inspiration, reading books inspiration and all along self compassion and dealing with no so fun things that are definitely out of our control but life is still good- sort of inspiration. Thank you I love your videos and you make me feel not so alone in the world.
the distinction between sensory overwhelm and cognitive overwhelm is such a useful one, and I'd never heard of it before! So thanks for mentioning that!
Finally watching the Vlog since we got our internet back 🙌🏻 project hail Mary became one of my favourite books this year and I'm not a sci-fi girly myself 😂 I really recommend the audiobook it just elevates the experience SO much!
I just wanted to say how much I love your channel❤️ it’s so different and unique and gives me nostalgia vibes! Keep being you! Also like that you read books most booktubers dont.
I just added Expedition Backyard to my tbr, and I saw that the author also did a book called “A Pocketbook Guide to Pigeon Watching.” My husband LOVES pigeons, and I will totally be getting that for him; although we do not live near them.
YES! You've got Mouse Guard! I adore all of that series and had a chance to meet and chat with David Petersen this May at a con. I hope you love them. They are some of my most treasured graphic novels. The artwork is gorgeous.
Ally: “I feel great!!”
me: “yesss!”
Ally’s editing: “honey-“
me: “oh, NO!”
Big time “oh no” energy!
LITERALLY the same reaction every time i see that meme lady now, like NO LEAVE ALLY ALONE! 😅
Just going through the exact same thing! I have a chronic illness and every time I have a good day, I overdo it! 🙈
Loved the video! ❤
unfortunately I have been conditioned into HATING seeing that lady's face
Ally, you're like a rain of sunshine, warm, welcoming and joyful. It's so good to spend almost an hour with you!

PROJECT HAIL MARY IS MY FAVORITE BOOK OF ALL TIME!!!!!!! it's incredible ALSO I highlyyyy recommend the audio book, it makes the whole experience 20x better!!!!!
I loved the audiobook!! I used it in tandem with the physical book. The audio really set the tone of the book and helped me imagine certain parts!
The way I always scream “NOOOO” to myself whenever you insert the “honey…” clips 😂 I DO NOT WANT THIS FOR YOU!!!
just dropped everything i was doing for this!! thank you for blessing us with an hour long vid🫶
