The Gargoyle has a cult following considering it a masterpiece. This author only wrote this book and lives in Canada. I was intrigued so I bought it. It is not about a gargoyle but a haunting story about a burn victim who is cared for by a stranger who claims she has gone through many past lives with him for 700 years! It is a great read so give it a try.

I loved watching you read books by Irish authors/ about Ireland and I’m from Ireland myself! I’ve been wanting to recommend All The Bad Apples by Moira Fowley Doyle for years now. The ideal exemplary "Irish reading experience" would be, in my own opinion, Milkman by Anna Burns. The book is a hectic feminist stream of consciousness set during the troubles filled with the typical Irish bleak dark humour and I think you might actually love it.
The Water Cure was objectively a bad book made worse by misleading marketing. I read loads of lit fiction and this book failed on every level from writing to characterisation, and I urge you not to belittle your insight as a voracious reader who has been reading across genres for a long time xx

I'm pretty sure that Senecal books don't translate good. Quebec writing style and conversation in french are so different than english. I read most of his books, My favorite being: ''Aliss'', ''Sur le seuil'' and ''5150 rue des ormes'' and I'm pretty sure none of them would be great in english. I don't know why they chose Seven days to be translated first... it's far away from the best one.
Some of his books have also been made into movies. But, most of his stories are dark and can be gore.
Sometimes I'm wondering about his sanity, lol!

Organically, a reading goal emerged at the start of the year to read an Irish author or Irish history each month, mainly inspired by my love of Colm Toibin. Part of this was reading a Sally Rooney, although I had no interest, but you can’t deny her importance in contemporary Irish literature. So I started hate reading Normal People and shockingly I really liked it and was impressed. What I most enjoyed was having two protagonists who were smart, maybe brilliant and how despite that they didn’t know themselves.
I will say one of the most important books I’ve read since as I wanted to understand Irish history was We Don’t Know Ourselves, which doubles as a memoir with his life paralleling what went on during the second half of 20th century in Ireland and how it was dragged into the modern world. Im also excited to read Say Nothing, which has nothing less then stellar reviewers and love by readers and is by the same author as Empire of Pain.

If you want to read more Patrick Senecal books, I recommend "Sur le Seuil" it's about a psychologist who gets assigned to an author who cut off his fingers and "Le Passager" about a literature professor who picks up a hitchhiker after driving home late and picks him up every time thereafter. Not sur if there's an English translation for either of these books, but I remember the twist endings being really good.

Patrick Senecal is very big here in Québec. Many of my friends LOVED his books in high school, but I never could read more than a chapter because of how graphic and gore it gets. Just hearing my friends discuss some plot twists and topics made my stomach turn, but I also avoid depiction of violence in most of the media I consume cause I'm very sensitive to it.
Sidenote: Could be fun for you to do a TBR based on the natural elements! I see you have a lot of books about water, so I don't think it would be difficult to find. And another criteria for rating could be how related to the element (in title or cover) the story actually is 😊

I see Hide! I read that book in two days. Would have been one day if I had nothing else to do. Fun and kinda creepy book 👍🏻

I did the 23 and Me a while back too. (It was probably inspired by your video) I am 90.2% British & Irish. My top British location is the greater London, and my top Irish location is County Cork, but County Mayo is number 4 on that list.
