tbh I probably could have edited out a lot of this video, but I was tired of looking at my face so I just uploaded it. You're welcome or I'm sorry, depending how you feel about an hour long vlog. Hahahahaha I'm off to take a nap now.
Your explanation of 3 star reads is spot on! It’s my least favorite rating to give because at least a 1 or 2 star book makes me feel something, even if that emotion is negative. With a 3 star book, I feel like I won’t even remember its existence in 6 months, which is such a bummer.
As an autistic person I do really appreciate the warning about Miracle Creek. It was on my list before watching this video but as soon as you starting discussing the overview of the plot I immediately opened Goodreads and removed it from my shelves because I know that it would've been an extremely upsetting book. For mystery/thrillers I'm always trying to find that balance between not knowing much about the plot going in but also not accidentally getting myself into something with deeply upsetting content (for me), so having someone give a warning alongside their basic discussion of a book is something I always really appreciate.
just what i needed today! also had a feeling you’d not like the whisper man, i dnf’d that one so quickly... detective stories are just not it for me either
The problem with the GR awards is they aren’t actually the “best of the best”, they’re the “most popular of the most popular”, which are not necessarily the same thing. I shouldn’t be surprised at this point, but it does still surprise me when I see books on these lists that I gave 1-2 stars just because those happened to be the more talked about books that year. 😂 And i get that my opinion on a book isn’t the final say, but it just goes to show that they aren’t necessarily choosing books for quality. Anywhoooo... the way I see it, someone should have to have read at least 60-70% of given category’s nominees to vote. That way we’d have a slight chance of figuring out the best books and not just the most popular ones. Most of the categories, just for example, I hadn’t read any of them, or maybe just 1 or 2 of the nominees. So naturally the one I read was the one I voted for. I would assume most people do it that way. And I could just not vote bc I don’t think that’s fair to vote for the only one you’ve read, but I do, because I like to feel like I’m participating. Still, I shouldn’t be able to vote if I haven’t read enough to be able to compare books in a category. Get with the program, Goodreads! 🤦🏼♀️ Okay rant over. 😆
The problem is there's no way to know if people have *actually* read the books. They can just add them to their shelves and then vote. But I agree, these awards are pretty 'empty' for me, they don't really mean anything.
I LOVED My Sister the Serial Killer and my reaction is the same as yours. Gave it 5 stars. Not a traditional mystery thriller, kinda cheeky and the great writing did it. Audiobook's great
I was chompin at the bit yesterday to see what the Wednesday video would be and I am so grateful for an HOUR PLUS long video!!!! Worth the short wait. Excited to watch!!!! ♥
Loved the video. I always love looking at your shelves in the background! I spotted “More Than This” and it brought back high school memories. I started reading that book in high school, LOST IT, and I am just remembering about it now! Might need to buy it again!
I love long vlogs from you, I actually discovered you on my journey to get back into booktube and also into reading. Ever since I started watching you earlier this year I've binge-watched all your reading vlogs and read quite a few of your recs!
I love Harlan Coben! I've read over 20 of his books. Mostly they're just super fast-paced thrillers with a bunch of twists and turns. A lot of times the mysteries in them aren't the most grounded or believable, but that doesn't really bother me that much lol
Ahhh I love this, this is one of my most anticipated videos from you! 🤗 I really respect the commitment it takes to read all of these books, that’s incredible! I would love to do this kind of video but I don’t think I have your motivation ahah. I also think The Turn of the Key is the best thriller of the year it’s just so great. 😍🥰 Also, I really love your hour long videos or longer content. 💕
I really liked how you showed ratings vs readers. I really liked The Mother in Law. I had a heard time really considering it a thriller. I Like how miss understood Diana was how Lucy and Dianna became close. And that ending, such a controversial topic!!
I haven't read any of these books! But a few of them are on my TBR for this year, including Turn of the Key (and Turn of the Screw), Lock Every Door and The Silent Patient. You are so dedicated to reading all these books and I am always amazed at how much you can read at a time. I am such a slow reader!
You're an awesome book tuber! I love all your videos! The turn of the key and lock every door we're my favorite thrillers last year! Also I am excited for Ruth wares new book called "one by one"
I’ve been really in the mood to read a thriller lately so I’m glad you’ve uploaded this. I’ve never voted in this because I’ve never read even one of the nominees, never mind enough to do a fair vote
Your explanation of what happened to you with The Silent Patient is so exactly what happened to me with The Wife Between Us! I can so see why people loved it and how good that twist would have been - I feel like I misunderstood what I was meant to think from the beginning so when the twist happened it was what I had thought I was reading anyway!
An hour of Lala? What did we do to deserve this?😭 Love the way this was edited! Thank you for always putting so much time and effort, it’s greatly appreciated❤️
Im super excited to check out the mother in law now because ive been looking for more family based dramas since I read little fires everywhere last year! Itll be interesting to see how I feel about it compared to your thoughts
I read alot of those!! I've been stalking youtube waiting for this video i was obsessed with the one you did last year. Please keep doing this! Love you as a friend!
LOVED THIS. I wasn’t able to read all of these this year, but your opinions always help me narrow down what ones I will read. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
The final ranking thing is a little less confusing when you factor in how many people read more than just one of the nominations. If readers of The Silent Patient also read Mother In Law, but liked TSP *better*, it actually removes one potential vote from MIL. (Since you can only vote for one in each category.) If your popularity rankings could account for the readers of multiple nominees, you'd probably have been spot-on. :)
It makes me so happy that you liked Miracle Creek! That would’ve been my choice for best thriller / mystery had voting not already closed by the time I finished it. 🙃
I don’t read nearly as much as you do, I just have a hard time getting through books. But I absolutely love listening to you talk. I will usually listen while I do other things. Isn’t that funny. You’re like my audiobook. I really respect your opinion, the books I have read that you’ve recommended are books I’ve liked. So thank you for helping me in these odd ways :)
I really enjoy your videos. I can't believe how much effort you put in making this video! I totally agree with you about the Goodreads awards, I also don't like the way it is done. I'm adding some of the books you liked to my tbr list.
OMG I was so "confused" reading The Silent Patient and did NOT see the twist coming. Loved it. But I would never vote because I haven't read any of the others.

I LOVED My Sister the Serial Killer and my reaction is the same as yours. Gave it 5 stars. Not a traditional mystery thriller, kinda cheeky and the great writing did it. Audiobook's great
