The time, commitment, effort and intention with this video is truly sensational! Endlessly in awe of your creativity - I’ll be coming back to watch this again and again with a notebook/pen in hand!! 📝
Patiently waiting for a booksandlala video where I’m not like wtf Kayla *HOW DO YOU THINK OF THESE THINGS?!* I watched it again as well just to help my thumbnail game the second time 😂
When she filmed at the beginning of March 'I'm gonna go easy on myself this month because it's gonna be a hard month for me' I was just like 'oh you have no idea....'
Lala, this video is incredible. The commitment, the creativity, the TIME it took, the experiment itself... it's inspiring! It was a really nice surprise to see me there
I KNEW YOU WERE DOING SOMETHING DIFFERENT WITH YOUR THUMBNAILS IN 2020 AND I'M SO MAD I NEVER THOUGHT ABOUT THE POSSIBILITY OF A YEAR LONG EXPERIMENT!!
Am I the only one who hears “I’m never doing a year long challenge again” and think you are already trying to throw us off the scent of your next insanely creative idea? You constantly outdo yourself and I am in awe. The dedication... 💯🤯❤️
For book tube specifically, I have noticed a trend where everyone is turning their books around to make the books they are going to talk about a “mystery.” I don’t care about this trend for everyone I already watch (you know the crowd you are talking about who watch early, because I am curious about what books they are going to talk about), but for new people popping up on my discover page I am WAY more likely to click on them if I can see what books they are reading without watching the video (changing thumbnail after a few days argument to get more longevity) even if there is just one mutual book, I am more likely to watch the whole video than if they are all “mysterious” and I have no idea what your taste is. okay that’s all, I wish more people would do this because It would def get more views from me for people I don’t already watch routinely. Great video, very interesting. I will be paying attention to more video’s thumbnail in the future.
I completely agree!! I already have hundreds of videos from all my subs to watch. If someone new wants to grab my attention, I need to see my favorite books or books I’m interested in on their thumbnail! I simply don’t want to waste my time 🤷♀️.
"That's what we are embarking upon on in 2020". I could weep for January 2020's Kayla. You beautiful naive soul, if only you knew what we were embarking upon..

I was literally waiting for her to show Keith from TryGuys when she was talking about the "white guy who gets super close to the camera and makes a face" type of thumbnail... and I was not disappointed. 😂 😂 😂
I’m SO glad the white shelf mystery has been solved 🙌🏽 that really riled up the masses Edit: ok now that I’ve watched the full video, the best thumbnail was the Pantone one in my opinion 🥰
Can I just say thank you for breaking thumbnails down for us from a graphic designer POV??? I’ve been trying to up my game, but this gave me so many more ideas. Thank you for nerding out on this topic with us!! 🙌
@bookslikewhoa I'm not even 15 minutes in and I agree! I LOVE this kind of insight and general behind the scenes sort of content. Sort of related (?) it just makes me think how I really enjoy commentaries for movies, and when I was a theatre major in college, I particularly enjoyed more of the behind the scenes work in putting a play together, despite the fact that my focus was acting haha. xD
I’m so amazed by this video!! The WORK that got put into this is on another level 🤯🙌 I am bowing down to you!!! (Also, was honoured to be featured in it 🥺❤️)
I LOVE how you can take one itty-bitty concept about the community and taking your marketing skills and BAM you make a video like this. I always love when you bring up larger conversations, but in a bite-sized way that everyone can relate to and understand. I personally love when you're analyzing certain parts of creators. LOVE IT.
THIS VIDEO WAS INCREDIBLE! The time and effort and commitment that you put into this was just absolutely inspiring and I'm always in awe of your content! LOVED so many of the thumbnail styles and definitely going to be using templates for my thumbnails from now on! You are so creative and such an inspiration and I loved going on the feature length film journey to find your thumbnail style! ♥️
ironically when i was looking for a change in thumbnails i came to your channel but then i saw how much effort and creativity you put into yours and i was like “this is too much work for me” (i’m lazy) ANYWAYS september was my favorite month because i liked the colors
I feel like such a “Debby-Downer” but I hardly notice the thumbnails. 😅 If I see your name or anyone I regularly follow, I just watch it. 😅 Also, btw, I do see you as a “script” type of person. I envision you with colors like maroon and navy, with a layered bold and script font.
(Edit: I’m talking about video views here) I think the reason summer months and November-December-ish time might be higher (atleast in young adult audiences) is because that’s when most college students have a break from school and are able to do more pleasure reading. I know that I tend to watch most booktube content during the summer/winter breaks because that’s when I have time to also read and feel inspiration to begin new books. During august-October and February-may it’s hard to find a lot of time to read because of school, so I don’t tend to like watching videos about reading because it reminds me of what I should be doing but aren’t. I’d be interested to see how age demographics change throughout the year. Just a theory lol.
that’s only true for some countries though. it would have to be more age AND location stats (because kayla wasn’t limiting her stats to the us/canada where summer holidays are in the middle of the year).
@@xanderghallagher1002 most definitely, but just something to think about! i’m australian so jan & dec are our actually our longer summer holidays (perfect timing for all this end of year content) but i don’t know how other countries organise their breaks and who knows, maybe kayla has a massive viewership in germany or zimbabwe! i love hearing her analysis of the stats though
This is so freaking epic, I noticed something going on with your thumbnails in March last year and I feel like I’ve been waiting nearly a year for this video!!! 😍 But seriously, the dedication for this video is amazing! I love seeing all the different styles of thumbnails it’s so inspiring and it’s so cool to see you try out everyone’s different styles!
OH MY GOD! I thought I was imaging things! Lala’s thumbnails sometimes didn’t even look like hers! :O massive respect for you, a year-long challenge is intense!
About an hour into the video when you were talking about “or I can move my bookshelves to be white” 🤯 felt like a huge plot twist in a story when you finally make the connection and it all makes sense!!!!
thank you for the feature ahhh! ur commitment to your content is literally mind blowing omg... my personal favorite Kayla thumbnail era was def the doodles I think :) your thought process behind this all is so illuminating !!
You... are an absolute queen!!! So creative, so smart, so talented. I just finished watching February, and thank you for the kind words! 🥺♥️ I agree with you 100%- the scrapbook thumbnails are so cute but quickly become torturous. It always took an hour or more to figure out! 😫 Thank you for constantly making content that is absolutely unmatched in creativity. This is so brilliant!!
Also I totally noticed this when you started in January but was too scared to ask you in the off chance I was wrong haha 🙈 I’ve been waiting for this video for a year and it does not disappoint!! 😍😍
I'd love to see a challenge like "reading only japanese authors for 1 month" or russian, mexican, whatever country you usually don't get to read as much, i think it would be really interesting, sorry for my bad english 😊
omg!! i am so honoured to be mentioned, thank you 🤧♥️ i will forever be amazed by your creativity & this was so creatively inspiring to watch! i adore the december thumbnails, your outfits 😍😍
you included my comment! 🥺 tysm for doing the full body thumbnail month. i know it made you uncomfortable but it really made me feel seen & happy. my favourite was dec & the white-based background month (which obviously shows my taste), the only one i hated was january’s theme (which, again, tells me i have no taste)
My favourites were the white backgrounds :) Honestly I kind of avoid booktube videos with the "gasp" face or silly expressions in the thumbnail... but then I prefer more serious book reviews/discussions in general
And then there are those of us who couldn't care less what the thumbnail is because we are here for every one of your videos regardless of the thumbnail. 😂😂😂❤
This video has everything I never knew I wanted: booktube reccs, YT stats, body acceptance as FACT, color theory, and a healthy POV on how insane stats are as a tool for measuring worth. This video is everything and I love you.
Ahhhh I definitely noticed when you were changing it up! That’s too funny what an awesome concept. You’re so stinkin creative! 🙌🏻🔥 Ok just finished and this was amazing, I felt so similar about thumbnails this year, definitely experimenting with them and discovering what I liked. Anyways loved going on the journey with you through this YEAR LONG VIDEO 😵🤯
Wow, I’m like.... no observant at all. It seems like I barely notice thumbnails, because until you started talking about how the other booktubers have an aesthetic, I had literally no idea. The only time I thought there was something weird was with the Chronicles of Narnia thumbnail, because I’m not used to thumbnails with no text or something. But THIS never crossed my mind, I’m very impressed. Also, thank you for talking about Clau and the Spanish community, I discovered BookTube through those creators and they have seemed like completely different worlds for years, seeing them come together excited me way too much. Amazing, Lala, keep doing what you’re doing, this is god tier content.
The end though 😂 This video was so fun!! The full body thumbnails were probably the most stunning to me (the Pantone though!!) but I am definitely in the group that automatically clicks on all of your videos so what do I know lol
I feel like I just watched an hour and a half of "The Psychology of RUclips with Lala" and I'm 100% here for it!! The effort and dedication you put into your channel and the fact that you share it all with us.... RESPECT!
My favorite thumbnails was definitely those with doodles on them! Makes it look like a feel good video, wich they are! Probs for the commitment to the projects, and it's fun to see the change of the discussion and styles around the topic 🥰
Can we appreciate the DEDICATION?! 😭 This video made me realise that a) I wish I was a creative person b) there are SO MANY booktubers that RUclips has yet to recommend to me *saves playlist to watch later* and c) I was so unobservant to your changing thumbnails because I am a Kayla Stan and will watch everything you put out regardless of the thumbnail 😂 but I already knew that...
when you said "there's a lot going on in march" i was just like OH GOD she has NO idea what she has in store! (at least assuming that clip was filmed at the beginning of the month).
Wow mad respect for how much work you put into this! So thorough I’m so impressed! I’ve been wanting to change up my thumbnails or put more effort in but its something I’m lazy with so this is very inspiring💕💕💕
i definitely remember back in january 2020 thinking “wow the thumbnails look nice but i miss the monthly color theme”! and now watching this year long experiment was sooooo entertaining!!! also i didnt have a favorite but i liked that the white thumbnails matched your ig!!!
I am so shocked!! Because you’re so creative like how!? But I feel so honored because I’m on this playlists 🥺 on a different note thank you for doing this!! This was so informative and I learned a lot THANK YOU
This was soooo fun to watch! And the camera angle 1 to camera angle 2 switch in the final clip made me laugh at loud, rewind, and laugh again. I fully did not notice any thumbnail trend changes, as one of those notification on people and also I'm apparently unobservant as hell 🙈. But looking back I really like the doodly stuff and changing up the closeness in general (ie. a mix of close ups, standard head and shoulders, and full body shots).
Love the conversations you've put in this video, from inclusion in the community to defining "booktubers" and the role of thumbnails and such. Love. All things I'm OBSESSED with discussing.
Impressed is an understatement. Blown away. The creativity, dedication, internal/external processing of every bit of information, analyzing the stats but not letting them negatively affect you, and then not having a solid answer at the end of all of this and being perfectly okay with it (as a creator and viewer). Can I just say, I'd watch it again in theaters.
lala you are so on point with the conversation regarding "big booktubers" not being only the english-speaking ones. in fact, i do know booktube channels on brazil that have more than half a million subscribers. check out "bel rodrigues" or "ler antes de morrer" for instances. and they only speak portuguese, which is a less known language when compared to spanish. and it's so weird that english-speaking booktubers don't even think about this possibility. i'm sure that there is a booktuber that has more than a million subscribers that i'm not aware of, but the fact that english-speaking booktubers talk and speak like they are the only ones is so weird!!! great video btw
I love your white thumbnails the most honestly. It fits your style and esthetic in my mind. This is such a fun video/project idea in general. I will love and appreciate anything you choose! 💕
I just wanted to let you know that while I did not recognize the changing thumbnail themes each month, I still consistently clicked on your videos this year actively thinking "oh my god I love this thumbnail." So while the experimental part was lost on me, your effort and time to create the thumbnails was always a a front row thought of mine when I watched each video. Your effort and dedication does not go unnoticed!
oh WOW i even sent this video to my non booktube-watching friends and all of them loved it! it's really fascinating to see the thought behind your thumbnails. to be quite honest, though, i don't feel like i have any favourites because i just liked all of them! i think the white background ones worked more for me in terms of being eye catching, but i thought all of them were so nice!
This is like a youtube creator masterclass! Also, of all the thumbnails, I liked the look of the white ones in October the best, and the December ones were great, too, especially that huge pile of books!!!
Honored to be your month of thumbnails here!! :3

This is such an incredible video!
I feel weird seeing January Kayla saying hi to me. 🥺 ... she doesn’t know what’s coming in March yet 😲
This went through my mind too 🥺
When she filmed at the beginning of March 'I'm gonna go easy on myself this month because it's gonna be a hard month for me' I was just like 'oh you have no idea....'
my mind thought "february kayla" was a very cooly named booktube channel for a sec there😹
That‘s it, we‘re officially crowning Lala as Queen of Booktube.
I second this 👏🏼👏🏼
Holy shiitttttt the creative process for this video is UNFUCKINGMATCHED & UNPARALLELED 🔥✨!!!!!! September and December are my favorites 🙏🏻

So many I didn’t know. almost need to rewatch and make a list.

I fully did not notice any thumbnail trend changes, as one of those notification on people and also I'm apparently unobservant as hell 🙈. But looking back I really like the doodly stuff and changing up the closeness in general (ie. a mix of close ups, standard head and shoulders, and full body shots).
This is so bloody fascinating. The dedication, honestly
This was so interesting! I'd wondered about some of the thumbnails. Also, this is so helpful to think about different styles to try out.
Love the conversations you've put in this video, from inclusion in the community to defining "booktubers" and the role of thumbnails and such. Love. All things I'm OBSESSED with discussing.
I noticed there was a change in thumbnail style but I assumed you were trying something different! Nice work!!!
Omg I’m so honored to be mentioned 🥺💜
lala you are so on point with the conversation regarding "big booktubers" not being only the english-speaking ones. in fact, i do know booktube channels on brazil that have more than half a million subscribers. check out "bel rodrigues" or "ler antes de morrer" for instances. and they only speak portuguese, which is a less known language when compared to spanish. and it's so weird that english-speaking booktubers don't even think about this possibility. i'm sure that there is a booktuber that has more than a million subscribers that i'm not aware of, but the fact that english-speaking booktubers talk and speak like they are the only ones is so weird!!! great video btw
1hr 45min? We've been blessed!
Kayla just BLESSING us with every single book tube channel we haven’t found yet 🤗❤️
This was so fun. I laughed through the whole November concept explanation. “White men love to do this” lolol.
I really sat here & watched this straight through from beginning to end
This is like a youtube creator masterclass! Also, of all the thumbnails, I liked the look of the white ones in October the best, and the December ones were great, too, especially that huge pile of books!!!
