I so WISH to be as unaware of the Reylo corners of the internet as Kayla 🤣someone needs to point me in the direction of an article/essay discussing the current chokehold Reylo fic writers have over the romance publishing world. It seems like every other month I hear about a new book that started as a Reylo story. The scientist in me needs to know what's going on lol🧐
yess i dont really care one way or the other because i dont know enough about reylo to notice the references - but i feel like every other book lately is rewritten Reylo fanfic and like??? what is it about them....
yeah i don’t know the first thing about reylo but i do know the fandom is taking over the bookish community 😂 especially with all the recent twitter drama
Thanks for including my video Kayla 💗 I can’t wait for you to get to They Can’t Kill Us Until They Kill Us! I got a few comments wanting more vampire recs haha I‘ll direct them to this video!!
A vampire book I really loved this year was A Long Time Dead by Samara Breger. We follow a woman from when she’s turned, a baby vamp, and a more seasoned vampire with all the pains of being immortal. There are multiple queer relationships in the story. It’s definitely more of a gothic style character study than action packed vampires, but I really liked getting to know the characters.
At least in the US, there are many audiobooks available for free on Spotify premium, but you are limited to 15 hrs each billing cycle. Even if you read at a faster speed, the listening time is based off of the book at 1x speed
Did authors ever figure out how they were going to get paid for this? I remember when it was announced and a lot of authors and publishers being like ????
Great video as always. I think that one idea for the list might be (over several years possibly) pick books from people who live in places you have either visited or NEVER heard of.
The best thing I read from Alix E Harrow is her short story, The Six Deaths of the Saint. It is only 30 pages and is on Kindle Unlimited. I teared up reading it. I didn’t expect that reaction for something so short.
I feel like Alix E Harrow is such a hit and miss for people and for me she's such a hit and one of my top favorite authors because I've given all her book 5 stars and they all really stay with me
Wrong place, wrong time was my favorite fiction I read this year!! I love mysteries (of course) and I love any story that plays with the idea of time, and I especially love finding out more about the author's rules for their specific type of time travel. I think this story was very different from what I'm used to reading and I was surprised the majority of the play,ot twists and I looove that feeling! I will definitely pick up more from this author!
I was also a vampire on the Spotify wrapped 😎✌🏽 Omg yes the daylist titles are so random, the funniest has been my sister in law's called swampcore gremlin 😆 My latest daylist's names was deathcore metal night 😅
as for the audiobooks: i found this out but not every country has free audiobooks with premium right now, the US just got them in october so i’m assuming canada hasn’t gotten free ones yet unfortunately
@@graceblondell7320 if you have spotify premium, you should be able to just search any audiobook and it’ll say by the play button if it’s included or not
my current day list is “easy rock laurel canyon late night” whatever in the world that means 😂 this is also so weird because earlier today i listened to a podcast about a woman killed in the exact city on Vancouver Island as the bestie who recommended the book! i didn’t even know Vancouver Island existed and now i’ve heard about it twice in one day! ETA: the spotify playlist is actually 100% spot on with what i like to listen to at this time of day though so i’ll give them that!
I just finished reading it and it was very much of a letdown because there was barely any character work or even work put into making the romance believable. When I went to look at reviews and found out it was a reworked reylo fic it alllll make sense, especially since the author mentions in the acknowledgments the books started as a threadfic on Twitter 😅
Wait.... you hated the flat share? That is literally the only contemporary romance novel I have EVER enjoyed 😂. Maybe i should pick up the vampire one 😜
Spotify has added 15 hours of audiobooks as part of the premium subscription, but initially it was just UK and Australia, and then they rolled it out to the US in November, so I don't think it's available in Canada yet!!
"Ohh I bet there's some bookstagram bitches" took me out. I can't stop laughing. It's not even a funny sentence or phrase, it's just the way you said it 😂
I got “Hypnotist” on my Spotify Wrapped. It said “Your concentration is absolute, friend. You like to play albums all the way through, from the opening track to the final note.”
Not one of my favourite songs EVER being the reason you picked up one of my favourite thrillers of the year!!? The TASTE😌🫶🏼 16:07 TOOK ME OUT!!😂😂 This was such an entertaining, fun idea for a vlog🥰!!
Don’t give up on your romance era! For a paranormal cozy mystery-ish romance read Nice Girls Don’t Have Fangs by Molly Harper. It’s fun and sassy. The romance admittedly isn’t the main point but it’s there as a B or C plot point.
i am one of the three that put a tale for the time being on the spreadsheet. not only is it my favorite book of the year, it might be my favorite book ever. our taste in books dont overlap very much so i was a little nervous when u picked it lol. im glad u ended up liking it!
This was so fun!! I love your music/book videos. And only felt mild panic when you mentioned reading books based of location and the spreadsheet 🙈 glad you found Tale for A Time Being instead because i enjoyed that one too oh and my current daylist is Fancy bubblegum pop morning
For Spotify audiobooks - I had to be signed in as the account owner to listen to any of them for “free”. I have a premium account but I’m not the account holder, so I had to log in as the account holder before any of them had no cost displayed.
I’ve had A Tale for the Tjme Being on my tbr for the longest time and you’ve convinced me I finally need to read it! Also with spotify wrapped, I know in australia you get up to 15hours worth of free audiobook listening per month when you have a premium membership, but I’m not sure if this is the stipulation in other countries!
I read My Roommate is a Vampire and it was a cutesy-fun 2 day read for me. I liked it because I enjoyed the time spent and I think I would give the author another try since it had potential BUT it is not a story I will remember years from now like Part of Your World or Love, Theoretically. I like Reylo and had NO IDEA that My Roommate is a Vampire was a Reylo fic so, no, you wouldn't have a different opinion if you knew about Reylo.
wrong place wrong time sounds so great! the idea of going back in time and relive experiences to solve a mystery is so interesting. im definitely adding it to my TBR now
At the end of the year I always realize that I do not listen to music very often. When I do I use Apple because that is the subscription I have. I just am not one to put on music when I am alone. I am more likely to put on a RUclips video or a crime show to listen to while I cook/clean.
I’m happy to hear that you thought my roommate is a vampire was decent lol. Personally, I loved that book because of how funny and low stakes it was so I was sad to see people roasting it so aggressively on Goodreads 😂 also I had no idea it was Reylo inspired? As a Star Wars watcher I don’t think that knowledge would have changed my experience at all… on a different note, i loved to see Hotel Ugly show up on one of your playlists! :)
Kyla: don’t read that one (the pallbearer’s club & woman, eating), read these ones (grady hendrix, house of hunger, & dowry of blood) Me: *reads all of them and gives the former ones 3-5 stars and the latter ones 1-2 stars* 😂 I still have to read the god of endings! But I’m scared of that book because I don’t tipically like historical fiction
Hi Lala! As you mentioned you're in your vampire era I wanted to recommend you one of my favorite movies that is a non conventional story about vampires : Only lovers left alive by Jim Jarmusch! I love it so much 😌 have a great holiday!
I believe with the Spotify audibooks you can only listen for so many hours a week/month? Which doesn't work with the amount of hours I listen to audiobooks. I also felt the same way you did about A Tale for Time Being!
I thought My Roommate Was a Vampire was so disappointing. I ended up DNFing it halfway thru and i didn't wvwn realize it was a Reylo book but maybe thats why it didn't work for me. Thats a ship i detest. Happy you enjoyed Wrong Place Wrong Time. I agree the book was addicting
Omg I’m only 7 minutes in and I’m flipping out that a Hanif book came up. My claim to fame in 2023 is being the person who aggressively recommended you read a little devil in America by commenting on basically every video and IG post with it 😂😂😂 it’s in my top 3 of the year!!
Currently reading Nestlings and loving it! I love the writing. I DNFed Starling House 😬 It was so incredibly boring and all over the place. I did not like the writing style
She adding "book wise" after saying she's on her vampire era, it's exactly what a vampire would say.
I don’t know how Kayla comes up with bomb idea after bomb idea but she STAYS doing so. She’s something else!
"I was like girl get up" had me howling, new tier unlocked for romance novel rankings
The fact that you had to ask Rob what Reylo was made you iconic and also the luckiest person on earth, what i wouldn't give to be you
Me when Kayla asked if they're together in the movies and Rob said yeah: "NO THEY ARE NOT!!!!!" 😂
I so WISH to be as unaware of the Reylo corners of the internet as Kayla 🤣someone needs to point me in the direction of an article/essay discussing the current chokehold Reylo fic writers have over the romance publishing world. yess i dont really care one way or the other because i dont know enough about reylo to notice the references - but i feel like every other book lately is rewritten Reylo fanfic and like??? what is it about them....
But luckily the scientist in you will have plenty to choose from since Ali Hazelwood loves to blend STEM and Reylo 😂
yeah i don’t know the first thing about reylo but i do know the fandom is taking over the bookish community 😂 especially with all the recent twitter drama
My Daylist today is "after hours fanficcore Thursday evening" 😶
That “smoke some, drink some, pop some” made my day 😂
When Kayla asked Rob about the ship name and I’m here picturing a vessel on the ocean🤦🏻♀️
Yep me too 😂
Me three
AND HE GOT IT ! 🎉😂
Me too, I was like 'ah, like a dinghy or something?' 😂
The USS Reylo 😂

It is a nice feature, but is not going to replace the other apps that I typically use to listen to audiobooks
There are also a ton of audiobooks that are like regular albums and they're free. The Raven Cycle, Hunger Games, loads of cozy mystery and romance.
Did authors ever figure out how they were going to get paid for this? I remember when it was announced and a lot of authors and publishers being like ????

It's so good! I read it three times!
"Girl get up" with the side eye had me laughingggg
I definitely would recommend The Unmaking of June Farrow based on the song lyrics you read, it IMMEDIATELY popped into my mind!
“The amount of times she said please was upwards of 20 I was like girl get up” GIRL GET UP BYEEEE 😭😭😭🤣🤣🤣🤣
Yes yes yes!!! Silver Under Nightfall is on my top 5 Faves of this year and I need more people to talk about it with !!
The snowfall in the background at 7:17 is 😍🥰
“Feels chaotic but it feels right” often describes your TBR decisions

Ooooh, I really like the mixed media idea for Starling House! I love that you don't know what Reylo is lol.
Wrong place, wrong time was my favorite fiction I read this year!! My Roommate is a Vampire is based off Reylo?! Ew, that's totally put me off this book now and I've been wanting to read it for weeks 😭 *unhauls*
I read it and you are not missing out.
I really liked the book and I didn't know then about Reylo comparison but I don't see it.

I really enjoy how you come up with reading concepts
Never knew that day lists on Spotify were a thing, but I just got “feel good 70s music for this moment” 😂
okay but my roommate is a vampire had me giggling whenever she moaned “frederick”

For the Spotify audiobook thing, if you are on a family plan you have to be the primary account holder in order to access.
