  • This video contains the ESPN broadcast of the Bills vs. Bengals MNF game on January 2, 2023 following the cardiac arrest of Bills safety Damar Hamlin. This shows the reaction of the players, coaching staffs, and the ESPN Press/Analysts. Although I didn't include the footage of Hamlin's collapse out of respect towards Damar Hamlin and his family, this video may be upsetting for some viewers.

Chuck Hughs, who was a wide receiver for the Lions at the time, died on the field of a heart attack in 1971. He’s actually the only player in NFL history to die on the field. What really fucking creepy about his death is that he got up after a tackle, took a few steps, then dropped to the floor, exactly like Damar did, only he died as soon as he dropped.

I was at an arcade when this happened, Dave and Busters style place, so there were a lot of TVs showing this game when I went that night. Right before I was about to leave, I look up and I see footage of the replays of Hamlin falling down (it was before everyone realized how serious this was). When I saw that combined with how bad the response seemed to be, my thought process was "did I just see someone die?" It shook me to the core for the rest of the night.
To say I'm happy that not only did he live, but made such a full recovery that he's playing football again this season, is an understatement. I think everyone came together for the next 24 hours after this broadcast, regardless if they prayed for his safety, donated to his charity, or just hoping for good news, in the hopes that he'd pull through like he did.

The moment I first saw this, my immediate first flash was back to Rich Peverly collapsing on the Dallas Stars bench during a game against the Columbus Blue Jackets. A very similar feeling of just shock and horror.
With so much time passing since both events, it's fantastic that Damar is doing great. Mike Tirico put it best when they played against each other earlier this year...no matter how they play against each other, both teams are bonded forever by this event.

Was truly an insane thing to witness, I remember watching the game with some friends in a voice call. What first was confusion turned into utter horror as we realized what happened. The shock of the entire situation resulted in nothing but silence, not a word was spoken for over 10 minutes. Never have I heard an NFL stadium so silent, you could genuinely hear a pin drop I would imagine. As we all took to social media for updates I truly believed I watched the complete end of Hamlin's life live. I can only imagine what the players on the field felt during that experience and the following days, knowing that someone you trained with, practiced with, worked with and became friends with go down like that. That night in America was silent, with only thoughts and prayers for Hamlin's well-being filling the air. Have to also give credit to how the situation was handled by the broadcast team, medical staff, coaches, and the fans in attendance. This was one of the most highly anticipated matchups, on Monday Night Football no less, but there was not a single person that cared about finishing that game anymore. Now fast-forward to the present and Hamlin has made a full recovery and is back on the field playing once again. Truly amazing.

10/3/2023 - 10/3/2023(249 comments at this time) - I work in hospital setting (27yrs with a license to do what I do) I've done CPR. "He's been down for NINE minutes (Never a good thing)
-- I was talking to 2 other medical family members on the phone at this point. The NFL did a good thing here by CX the game. Damar's CPR event & recovery should never be hidden by social media. TY for having this video. The NFL films doesn't have it available - (yet)
-- This is such a good video for CPR & AED awareness. So sad to watch here absolutely, but very needed. The existence of Rapid Response Teams / Quick Response Teams (QRS) are needed very much so. The NFL needs to cover these (RRTs & QRTs) teams better & way more in depth. Not just handing out awards for what they did on this day, but for what they need to do to proper for such events.
-- 13:50 - Booger McFarland put so well - (2) huge worlds collided on this day. Even in a hospital setting, these things happen. A trauma has a TEAM & the doctors are the coaches. Doctors direct the players in the room as to what happens next. Ever code has a well known (P&P), but in the middle of a code - the professional around the patient is making it up (minute by minute & second by second) according to how the patient is reacting & doing. The best friend in the medical field is Time.
    - ( Time to recover). Damar went into arrest at least 2 other times that night - from what I remember.
-- Suzy Kolber, football analyst Booger McFarland and NFL insider Adam Schefter. You know they were thrown into this situation & just making it up as they went along. They did a great job at the time of this event.
TY for this video & Thank God he pulled through.
