No, marriage is great. The problem is that he shouldn't have married her. They obviously didn't talk about finances before they decided to hook up. My wife and I were on the same page BEFORE marriage, and we've been happily married for 41 years with a paid-off house and no debt. Don't blame marriage. Blame the people.
As a truck driver I can say selling the house selling the car and going over the road is the best move he can do. No rent no mortgage no car payments. Focus on paying off what you owe.

Why anyone would get a brand new truck with almost $1K monthly payment plus insurance while having $35K in CC debt and no savings? Talk irresponsible. I feel sorry for him going thru divorce but he also needs to reconsider his life priorities.
This guy has a "poor person's mindset." This guy will never get ahead. He will be digging himself new holes as fast as he can dig himself out of other holes for the rest of his life. There are many like him.
This guy is not "financially smart". Anyone who pays nearly a grand in monthly truck payments was suckered. Suckered by dealership salesman, suckered by his wife, suckered by other debtors... stop being the sucker, dude.
This sounds like what happened to a guy I went to school with. He dated a girl for a little over a month when she told him she was pregnant and he had to marry her. Friends told him to call her bluff and make her prove it, we even gave him the name of clinics to take her to. He married her. They rented a nice apartment and he filled it with financed goodies. He financed car for them. Obviously, she was not pregnant ('big surprise).A year or so later she wants a divorce, and it was ugly. She dragged it out over how to split the the stuff HE had paid for while they were married. He met with her and her lawyer several times and she was never satisfied. He told us their final meeting lasted about fifteen minutes; he told the judge he was done and ready to sign the paperwork. All he wanted was his truck (it was paid for and he had it before he married); she could have everything else he had paid for. She was stunned and apparently not happy. He said it was as if she did not really want to divorce him and maybe hoped he would beg her to take him back. The divorce was granted and he never looked back. He eventually married and had three kids.
Dave's right. Lose the house, the truck, and whatever else you bought together while married. Buy her out and get on with getting back to YOU. Been there, done that, got the tee shirt!
I find it absolutely horrendous that divorce law can be written so poorly that the ex can make an equal amount of money, squander it, and then take half of his, meaning she actually got 75% to his 25%
I know that this has nothing to do with the video, but I’d like to thank you guys for being a huge support to me. I’m debt free as of TODAY from $79750 in consumer debt 16 months ago
I'm on the same journey. Had about $75000 debt. Started paying it off in June 2022. As of today, still have $22500 left and I'm paying it aggressively. It's a mentally draining process but the lessons learned from this journey is GOLD.

OTR driver here. I went through this exact same thing a few years ago. Don’t let her keep the house like Dave said. Force the sale of that. Get your name off that mortgage. Everything will be settled, or split equally. You will recover from this.
I used to live by a lady with 4 kids by 4 different guys….never worked a day in her life. I asked another neighbor that knew her what she did for a living. His answer? She’s a professional divorce’ and breeder. Her alimony and child support was more than I made with a doctorate in engineering. And she paid zero taxes.
This is why the trend against marriage is growing with so many younger men. Divorces are no fault anymore so all these women have to do is be nice enough to get you to marry them and then like you said, take half. I'm union and my buddy went through this a couple of years ago. He married a woman, took care of her kids as his own and their biological dad never paid a dime, treated the woman like a queen. At the 10 year mark everything changed. She moved out with zero warning, filed for divorce and ended up with half his 401k, half his pension and half the savings. She had been a part time server at a little restaurant during their marriage so she made maybe 10% of the household income. He found out during the divorce she had been cheating on him for a couple of years. Why work your ass off, do the right thing and then just hand half of it over to some woman who was only in it for the money anyway?
I used to finance a $64,000 F-250 with an $888.88 payment exactly attached to it. I had to come just shy of $6,000 out of pocket to get out of it. But I'm in a separation and at the time I shared her car because I had a motorcycle, but now I dry a motorcycle and the only thing I miss about that truck (not the payment), is a roof over my head. Today I got drenched in rain on my way into work and sat in wet clothes all day.
Well, Dave is right about marriage, but people aren’t responsible about getting married. They don’t make thought out decisions about who they’re marrying and why they want them as a spouse. They just think typically “I love them, that’s enough.”
Getting rid of her now is the best thing for him. He's young enough to get his life together. It's too bad he took out such a large loan on the pickup but he is just like millions of others.
Problem is he will probably jump into another relationship with a new woman when the first one comes along and is nice to him. Problem is he could be stepping in it all over again.
" just like millions of others" True!!! My buddy has a shop next to a repo business. When I'm there, you should see how many people come to claim their cars or to collect personal belongings on a daily basis. Also many car haulers in and out picking up cars. It's a continuous revolving door, it NEVER stops spinning.
Of all the Dave Ramsey videos I've seen this one is probably the best advice I've ever heard given to a person who called. I hope this guy takes Dave's advice exactly as given.
Dave’s biggest mistake is assuming a judge will split everything 50/50. Most judges won’t. She’ll get 75% of the house and 401K and he’ll get 75% of the debt. His lawyer doesn’t seem that great either.
Also, what I meant by ‘not good’ is not every lawyer truly knows the law that they study. It’s merely an interpretation aka opinion of the said-laws. Don’t get me wrong, lawyers know more than the Average Joe or Jill but they make mistakes too and it’s up the judge to decide what to believe. However, the Judge doesn’t always make the right decision either but that’s another can of worms.
Awesome advice. I was even relieved when Dave laid it out like that and portioned up the sections into digestable pieces. Poor guy, wife goes shopping he saves for retirement and in the end wifey (hopefully doesn't) get half of it. Caller sounds like a good, hard-working man, goes to show how important it is to be discerning who you trust. And not just men, I'm a woman and I've had to take a hit too due to a financially irresponsible guy (earning twice as much as me but still managed to spend it all and drag me into debt). One year everything will be much different and better, just be smart these couple months. All the best to us all 🙏
I normally put 2k into my retirement and then brokerage pretending I have a car debt of 2k/mth. 976 is a lot. I had a car debt of 195/mth and worked overtime to pay it off.
Dave, $740 was the national average for a new car payment a few months back. This is only 25% more than that, all trucks cost this much now. What has to stop is the price of vehicles going up because in case you haven't been looking around, there are no cheap ones anymore. You can expect to pay 15-20K for a very very POS used one now. Prices doubled to tripled since Covid. Most trucks new are close to 100K now out the door.
We paid about $740/month on a 36-month 0% loan back in 2018 for a Dodge Durango, and that was after about a $10,000 down payment. $900 doesn’t shock me at all.
For a truck around 600-700 in monthly payments, the mileage exceeds 140k pretty regularly from what i've seen. A 7-950 truck payment seems like the norm now for a fairly newer truck. This is why i strayed away from Dave is because of the disconnect from the everyday person the more our economy slips.
Maybe don't buy a new vehicle? I don't understand how people think it's better to go into massive debt at crazy interest rates rather than buy a reliable used car for $10k and then pay a qualified mechanic $3k to $5k for a complete overhaul. If you have the cash, sure, but most people seem to be needlessly drowning themselves.
@@yamamancha Reliable car for $10k in the post-covid economy?... In that price range you're talking about cars with 70-90k (average) mileage. $5k could cover complete suspension wear and tear replacement, brakes, tires, other minors. But any engine issues are a whole different ballgame. Buying at that price you're adding an element of randomness to if you get a car that lasts 50k miles without major issues, or 10k miles before you're in the hole for a $9k trans. Especially if you buy a Chrysler/Stelantis product .. lol (I'm a mechanic)

Dude got taken for a ride, crashed hard and then got in again...this guy is an idiot 😂
That sounds like literally any dude that gets married and then divorced 😂

Not potentially…She will get half of everything acquired during marriage.

They marry you for 3 years and take half your shit. What hurts the most is they knew they will leave you before they said yes I do.
He's lucky, if you watch Forensic Files a lot of women literally marry a guy just to poison him and collect insurance.
@@robloxvids2233 😳 never thought of that.

Every time Dave tells someone to get married a link to this video should get posted in the comments.
Well, Dave is right about marriage, but people aren’t responsible about getting married. They don’t make thought out decisions about who they’re marrying and why they want them as a spouse. They just think typically “I love them, that’s enough.”
This couple clearly didn't go through premarriage counseling nor were they on the same page about money, before & during marriage.

The woman wasn’t nearly as much of a problem as his own financially decisions, according to the things he listed that he purchased.
Man, I love Dave's straightforward advice
Of all the Dave Ramsey videos I've seen this one is probably the best advice I've ever heard given to a person who called.
I hope this guy takes Dave's advice exactly as given.
Dave’s biggest mistake is assuming a judge will split everything 50/50. Most judges won’t. She’ll get 75% of the house and 401K and he’ll get 75% of the debt. His lawyer doesn’t seem that great either.
Most judges will keep it ALL for themselves. That's how divorce court works in America.
Not every lawyer is actually good. Some just flex the title of a lawyer but aren’t good at their job.
That’s only if child custody is in involved. There’s no child involved so most states should do 50/50 for that matter.
If it were a woman calling he would tell her to get the "meanest" lawyer that she can find. Ramsey is a joke.
This guy's truck payment is more than my monthly house payment. Selling a brand new truck that expensive is very tough to do on private party.

Since biden took office, but dumbies keep voting democrat

@@blackworldtraveler3711 Should she stay if she's not happy??
Sounds like these kids are two peas in a pod. Neither one of them will ever get ahead. They will both be in debt their entire lives and own nothing. You can just tell.
@@deirdrekiely6187 None of them are happy, too many Chad's and Tyrone's out there
@@deirdrekiely6187
I didn’t say anything about staying.
When did leaving stop someone from taking half, delaying court proceedings, creating drama, weaponizing kids,etc..?
Our first mortgage wasn’t 970 a month!! (It was 875). Why would anyone buy a car with that kind of payment!?!? Insane.
Americans love their trucks!
I always see these working class to middle class guys driving 70 k to 90 k trucks......half of them do not even have a trailer hitch on them and you can tell they are not hauling anything in the bed....it is a total vanity buy....the smart guys that need a powerful truck for construction type work buy the paired down work trucks with crank manual windows and am/fm radio and no other bells and whistles.....the same guys that have a 900 dollar truck payment cry and blame Joe Biden and the country in general for having no money and not being able to buy a house...i love it...i hope they will always be in dept and never get ahead....total man-boys....
@@US_ARMY_25_INF._DIV. imagine buying a 90k truck to throw cinder blocks and plywood in so it can bounce around the bed and dent it up. These truck prices are so insane.
Bought my house in 1995, payment was $647/month. These all hat no cattle guys driving around in pickup trucks are not too bright
No way she gets that much. She was making just as much as he was. He just needs a better lawyer.
And he better not get a semi with a huge maintenance fund. Hes gonna end up with something needing to be fixed and will be sitting, not making money, but still have to pay insurance and his semi note.
How do you trade in 2 vehicles and still end up paying 970 a month on a truck.
DO NOT become an owner operator. The truck economy sux right now.
This is great advice from Dave!
It's good advice, but like most of Dave's dealing-with-debt advice, it's pretty much common sense. I find it kind of amazing that people actually have to be told this stuff. Selling the truck would is an absolute no-brainer. I would have already been all over that.
Not to be mean, but people are stupid.
As Dave said, the caller is going through a lot of emotions right now. Logic isn't as easy as it should be.
That's why we have experts like Dave we can come to for help.
Ahhhh... Or, never gotten in that position to begin with ???
I really feel bad for the guy, I had a similar situation. A two-year marriage cost me $31,000
Men have to STOP GETTING MARRIED!!! Or, get an iron clad prenup and have it updated/modified ANNUALY. Marriage is a BUSINESS from the start.
Ex left me 350k in debt. I worked hard, and have almost all of it paid off, 8900 left. I did the Ramsey method. I will say no judge should ever let a cheater empty your accounts and walk Scott free
I would take a $970.00 truck payment over paying $1842.00 a month for our health insurance payment. UHG... We pay over$ 22K a year just for health insurance that we hardly use.. Digest that for a minute... I notice that never gets brought up in these conversations regarding health/dental cost for out of pocket buyers who are too young for medicare..
My Employer offers FREE Lifetime Family Healthcare, that extends into retirement.
This allows retirement in your late 40's/early 50's (Pension)

$130K private>> $65K Government
@@aolvaar8792 WOW thats a great deal for you all. 🙂 I retired from the state you get nothing but a pension. medical/dental is all you unfortunately
I'll never get married again. I didn't get it as bad as this guy but it's just not worth it. I had to give my ex wife half the profits from the sale of our house even though I did all the work to it while she didn't do anything.
Do a prenup. They’re not just for celebs. But if you have kids all bets are off. You’d be stuck in that case even if you weren’t married.
@@ericeandco Better yet, consult a men's family lawyer before engagement. A good lawyer can share a lot of experience about what types of women are takers, and what types are keepers.
A prenup is a must, but it cannot turn a marriage with a taker into a good and rewarding chapter of life.
Prime example on why men shouldn’t sign a contract that rewards the woman that break it 💯💯
he was in debt before he got married, so credit councelling is needed, lots of men have broken contracts as well.
Gentlemen,
In case you needed any more proof…. Never get married. This man doesn’t even have children with this woman and she is trying to fleece him.
Go your own way.
Good thing this poor fella didn't have children with this awful woman.
Gentlemen, I married a woman in 2010, 6 years later she cheated on me and literally left the household from one day to the next. We had 2 kids, 6 and 3 at the time. Went through divorce, custody battle, debt divided in half.
I swore that wouldn't happen again.
Remarried in 2021, this lady loved my kids when we were dating, once the paper was signed she flipped on me and didnt want to have anything to do with my kids.
Separated a year later. Going through a divorce again.
Im done with serious relationships. Moral of the story most modern women are snakes. And they do not fear and have no shame leaving their marriage.
We live in very troubled times.
I do not recommend a man getting married nowadays especially in the United States. We have so much to lose and so little to gain.
Stay safe and vigilant felas.
Women are now raised to think they are in charge and men are stupid. They do what they want, when they want.
Sounds to me like you have a problem picking women, more than women have a problem in general.
Should’ve signed a prenup.
Thank you for your story. Hope you boys are listening
Ever wondered what you could have done better? Not judging, just asking.
Spending $1k a month on a truck? People don’t value life that can’t be fun making less than 30 an hour for what!!?
This is so sad - I'm sorry Corey. Dave's strategy is so so GOOD so do as he says to the letter and you'll recover in quick order. I'd also pick up a part-time job meanwhile to push forward on the debt faster. Stay focused on the numbers rather than the pain and resentment. Hopefully your lawyer can help you avoid making any mistakes like acquiring any new assets or how to force the sale of the house.
I think Corey needs to be a lazy slug until the divorce is final.
I owe $10,000 left on my car. Very good car. I got the itch to buy a new truck since the dealer was offering me some good equity in my vehicle. Was about to trade it in and my 6yo said “daddy you don’t need a new truck”
I listened and left. So thankful she said that.
I’ll send this video to anyone who asks why I’m not married and will never be married.
