  • IS THE PRO-V1 DEAD? COSTCO KIRKLAND SIGNATURE vs TITLEIST PRO-V1! We all know that the Titleist Pro-V1 and Titleist Pro-V1x have been the benchmark for golf balls for a very long time, we have had Taylormade TP5 and Taylormade TP5x looking like knock them off the top as the best golf ball you can buy, Callaway Chromesoft and Callaway Chromesoft X have been a fan favourite for a number of years now also... but what about the Costco Kirkland Signature Golf ball? surely a golf ball on sale next to dog food, toilet roll and ketchup can't take the crown as the best golf ball money can buy? we know they are cheap golf balls, excellent value golf balls, and good golf balls, but are they the new best? lets find out... and lets do it now!

I’ve been using Kirkland brand for 3 months now. My friends say they’re illegal because my scores have improved since I’ve started using them. I was playing Titlest and Vice pro plus exclusively. I’m a 5 handicap and just love the way the ball checks, flys and rolls on the greens. I don’t have restrictions when it comes to cost for buying golf balls but choose to play Kirkland because of the playability.. hope this helps

The best golf item from Kirkland are the golf gloves. They have the same feel as a Titleist players glove and they are $22 cheaper they come in a 4 pack for roughly $18.

Don’t forget the included ball marker. 😁. Seriously though, I use these gloves and they are awesome. I also use the Kirkland ball and like it a lot. It does scuff more than a ProV, but I go through 2 to 3 a round so not a big deal to me.

Chris Gillies - You might get a full round from one ball, but they are so cheap that it doesn’t matter. They tend to scuff on bunker and wedge shots. However, I will say that even though scuffed, I’ve never found any noticeable degradation in performance (flight, distance, etc.). I play them until I lose them in the woods or drink versus tossing them out due to scuffs.

Me too...and the 2020's hold up and perform better than 2019's. not sure if it's placebo, but before I even knew there was an issue with the 2019's, I played them and hated them. Decided to give them another go in 2020 and am in love. yes I am down 1/3 of a club, but with my inconsistency that could just as easily be a swing flaw.
think about this, you are getting an extra dozen for every dozen you buy, when comparing against even the BEST deal for ANY 3-piece ball (including max fli, top-flight, vice, snell, etc). This ball truly does perform as well as any premium ball for LESS THAN WHAT YOU CAN BUY A NOODLE FOR. For crying out loud, Top-flight "BOMBER's" (what a dumb name) are $14. That's a 2-piece range ball from crying out loud. I mean seriously? how is this even a question?! If I told you to buy a pickup that got 28 mpg, for 100K. Or buy the exact same pickup but with a tranny that only produced 26 MPG for 30K, which one would you get? And you would feel AMAZING about yourself. And that is even a worse decision than NOT buying kirklands...

Blows even budget golf balls out of the water! holds up in the wind too might I add.

Thats with a standard length shaft. If I put a 6 iron shaft like BD into an 8 iron head. I would probably hit it the same as the 7, or 188. BD carried the 8 iron 200 and he is a pro with perfect matched equipment. To me it’s not surprising, it’s the future.

It's still a crazy long way to hit an 8....but that is how he is building his game. Be crazy long with everything and hopefully be hitting much more lofted irons into most greens.

I currently game the Pro V1x and stocked up on the 2019 model when they went on sale. For me the best ball for my game I tested in 2019.
That said I live on a golf course and pick up about a dozen balls a day on the hole I live on. This has allowed me to test just about every ball type on the market. I'm only 415 yards away from the practice green and visit it daily. I decided to test out the Vice balls in early May as I kept collecting more and more of them. I tested the Vice Tour, Vice Pro and Vice Pro Plus. All were the 2019 version. The Vice Pro Plus was outstanding all around the green and felt the exact same as my Pro V1x. I had found 5 of these and took them out on the course and was impressed with every aspect with 1 slight edge to the Vice ball as the lime green Vice uses was more pleasant to my eye than the yellow that Titleist uses on the Pro V1x. Honestly I couldn't tell much if any difference in sound, feel or performance with any club, lie or type of shot. Fast forward to last Wednesday and I got my hands on 2 of the new 2020 Vice Pro Plus balls, 1 red 1 lime green. This was my first experience with this more vivid color of red ball but I have always enjoyed the lime green coloring Vice used so I was game to try it out in red. As for performance the 2020 Vice Pro Plus was flat out incredible in every aspect just as the 2019. The main difference was the red ball just suited my eye instantly which was a pleasant surprise. I found it easier to focus on, which I'm sure is just my brain being weird, but it helped in consistency of strike especially around and on the green.
With my 2019 Pro V1x I average 128 carry with my GW 51*, 183 carry with my 6i 30*, and 275 carry with my driver.
With the 2020 Vice Pro Plus I averaged 132 carry GW, 186 carry 6i and 273 carry with Driver. The difference in the numbers was ball speed and spin. The 2020 Vice Pro Plus had a 1 to 2 mph increase on ball speed with the same swing speed and also had a decrease in spin with each club I tested usually 500-700 rpms less. I use a TM M3 9.5* driver with a HZRDUS Smoke Black 6.0 shaft. After a slight adjustment to my weights where I put the 2 weights basically side by side in the middle of the straight portion of the track (created a mid launch effect) I was able to increase my carry with the Vice ball to 280 yards and not lose any roll as the spin numbers stayed lower than my Pro V1x. I was hitting the Vice ball almost identical in height as the Pro V1x but with my driver the flight was lower initially and cost me a few yards until I adjusted the driver to optimize the performance with the Vice Pro Plus ball. I'll also add I play a slight draw bias shot shape and the Vice Pro Plus was better for me in dispersion with each club as the side spin was reduced and more consistent shot to shot.
If I had to purchase new balls today I'd be buying the 2020 Vice Pro Plus in red and not think twice about it. At $124.75 US for 5 dozen the value is there but honestly for my swing it's just simply the best ball out in 2020.
The Kirkland ball that was tested here IMO would be the ball I fitted for almost every mid to high handicap player, beginners and those who only play a few times per year. The performance is there but the balls are slightly inconsistent and I have the same results as James in a loss of distance with driver. The durability is not on the same level as the more premium balls but that has zero impact to those I mentioned above who are more inclined to lose the ball before durability becomes a factor. It's a very good ball especially for the price but it does not hold up to any of the top end balls over time.
I'm a 5 handicap, use Hogan PTX irons 4-7 and Hogan Ft Worth 15's 8-PW. TM M3 driver, TM Stage 2 Tour 16.5 3HL, TM M2 Hybrid and Solus 7.1 Tour Wedges. Average Driver swing speed is 108 mph. I am a club builder and have access to an indoor/outdoor facility for testing purposes. My numbers were verified on ball performance over a 2 day period and combining the data from both sessions using TrackMan from one session indoors and the other outdoors.

At least the guys that drop $50 a dozen are doing it cause they value brand/or believe the performance is worth it. If cost even dreams of entering the mind then if your not using kirkland, I ask you to really consider what your doing..I actually think the dude dropping $50 makes more sense then the dude dropping $25 (both make less sense than the dude dropping $12)

I play the Titleist Pro V1X. I recently have been playing the Taylormade TP5X. Both are excellent balls in feel and distance which are the two most important things to me when it comes to a golf ball. I have played the Costco Kirkland Signature ball and while it's not quite as long as the other two it does have a good soft feel. But like everything else you get what you pay for. The few dollars you save on the Costco ball shows up in loss in distance and uniform performance throughout balls. The one thing I know is when I pull a Pro v or a TP5 from the sleeve I know it'll perform exactly as the previous balls have. To me that's worth the extra money.

My ball of choice for the last 3 years in respect of cost and performance has been Velocity. Over the years I've tried Pro V1s either after finding them or occasionally winning a sleeve in a raffle. I'm a 13 handicap and if I'm honest I couldn't say that I derived enough benefit from the Pro V1 to justify spending £40+ per dozen. A few weeks ago one of my mates gave me a Kirkland to try and I was impressed by the feel and the distance I was getting. I bought some and was happy until the first day I played in windy conditions. Suddenly I was finding that what felt like good shots were spinning off more than I would have expected. Having read reviews that criticised them for abnormally high spin rates I was suspicious so switched to Velocity mid round. Maybe it was coincidence but suddenly I was hitting fairways and gaining about 20 yards off the tee. I will only play the Kirkland in relatively calm conditions now.

I used the Costco/Kirkland ball yesterday for the very first time (they were a father's day gift) and found them to work very well compared to what I typically use (Pro V1x). The Costco/Kirkland ball was a little more spinny, but other than that they are a good ball especially for the price. My biggest issue is the consistency of supply from Costco. If a player is going to commit to using this ball, they have to be available when you need them and Costco has regular product supply issues with specific products except the pizza and hotdogs.

Playing the Kirkland about 15 rounds. Very good spin & hit higher, which was showed in video with less spin. The cover is not as durable and scuffs more easily. But for $1.00 per ball they are great. Could afford any ball, but happy & going for another 2 dozen for $24.00. 77 year old 15 handicap who drives it 205. - 220.

I've been using the K-Sig balls for a few years off and on. I put them right there on the same level as the Pro V1. In fact, I get better shot control out of the K-Sig, better accuracy on drives. I'm not sure if that's just psychological or what, but I think there's something about the ball that gives it better stopping power around the greens. Almost reminds me of a premium balata. You can't go wrong with the K-Sig! Should be used on tour even! And the Costco golf gloves are very nice and durable.

I'm using the Kirkland 3 piece v2.0 balls because they're very affordable and they feel fabulous around the green. Iron shots feel soft and rewarding. The drive is slightly shorter than the ProV1, but not so short that I couldn't reach a green in 2 on a par 5. I only lost about 5 yards average.

Playing Kirkland over the winter but now looking for 2023 season. The Kirkland I find can mark up after a round and distance is OK for winter. Have tried a few and I am leaning towards the Taylor made TOUR RESPONSE. As a 10 handicap the Kirkland’s are a little short and there is something about the feel I cannot put my finger on. You generally pay for what you get and the mid range price TM with stripe works for me. Don’t tend to lose many balls and after playing a single TM for a couple of rounds, I have to say there is hardly a mark on it.

I saw some comparisons online of both the Vice balls and the Cut Golf balls, so I decided to try them out. I ended up buying the Cut Blue, which is a great performing ball with really good spin on short shots all for $20 (US) a dozen for a 4-piece ball with a urethane cover. It's a balance of price and performance for me; I'm a mid-teens handicap with a driver head speed of ~105, so I don't need a really pro ball. The Cut gives me close enough to pro ball performance for less than half the price.

I’m not great but an average player and man when I hit those par 3s surrounded by water I am so much less nervous I’m gonna dump a $6 ball in the drink. And when I’m relaxed I actually hit the ::gasp:: green. So for me I love these. I will give up a few long yards for the price. Having returned to golf after an 11 year gap, I was expecting to lose a few balls. So, I bought the KS from COSTCO. I must say they have been brilliant, especially around the green and out of the bunker. My driving range is not consistent enough to worry about a few yards due to the ball, but the KS feels good off the club face. For me, I don’t see the value in a ball costing 3.5 times the price. Finally putting is lovely with the KS.

I've used many balls over the years. Im constantly switching mainly due to price. Durability is not even a question for me because I rarely play the same ball for more than 15 holes. What I've found is that the current ball I use (Taylormade RBZ) 15 to 20 yards shorter than my favorite (Callaway ERC of the Chrome Soft X). Since I lack the ability to put any back spin on the ball that doesn't play into my thinking. I can top a ball on the green (some times) but I've never been able to get the ball to come back to me. Ever! So It comes down to does 20 yards make the added expense of $3 worth it. The short answer is no! But that doesn't keep me from buying the more expensive balls. Just makes me happier when I find the one I hit in the bushed. Cost of the ball over the cost of a stroke any day.

I have gamed ProV, Bridgestone, TP5, Cally Chrome soft and the Cosco ball. They all perform equally well, but the Chrome soft was absolutely the most durable ball. My local is a tight Par 66 course with a lot of emphasis on high spinning wedge approach shots. The TP5 fell to bits and I had to swap it out after just 15 holes. The BS was still playable at the end of a round, but was noticeably roughed up. The Cosco ball barely lasted 9 holes. It had spin and distance, but my short irons tore it up. But, in it's defence, I played a par 72 with driver holes on 12 of the 18, and fairly benign "land short and run up" greens. The ball was still very good at the end. I guess my point is, you need to match the ball to your game AND the course you will play it on. Oh, and I don't play the Prov, because i use yellow balls, and where I am (Queensland), I can't buy yellow Prov's online for the same price that I can get the others.
Plus... one side rant ... to all golfers, STOP PICKING BALLS UP ON THE GOLF COURSE! They didn't grow where you found them. Someone hit it there! I hit a long ball and occasionally am not in sight of the landing zone all the time. I see it land from the tee, but its missing when i get there. You know who you are, and Stop it! lol
Play as often as you can, and enjoy your game regardless of the outcomes.

I have been using the Costco ball for years, and used to use the Titelist pro-v1x. They are nearly identical in their performance. I am vain, so I do use the Pro-v 1x when I am paying over $100 per round. The Pro-v 1x seems to have better spin on short shots and the Signature ball has better performance for me off the tee as far as direction is concerned. The higher spin rate is the culprit for the Pro-v1x. So if you are vain like mevuse the Pro-v 1x but if you are thrifty like me, use the Signature ball for the majority of your playing.

How do you hit your gap Wedges so far? For some reason I also hit my Pitching Wedge 120-130 yards and my 7 Iron carries 170 yards... but I can barely get my 52 degree to reach 100! The 52-60 Wedges are Kirklands, and my Irons are Sim2 OS with graphite shafts. I'm getting good height on both PW and Gap, it's just my 52-60 Wedges don't give the same pop and ball speed I get with my regular irons including PW. I find myself having to choke up and do easy swings with a PW on anything longer than 100 and shorter than 125. That's over 20 yards without a club which isn't normal.
