I feel like Nishiki's tattoo represents him during the yakuza 0 days, where he was a lot more optimistic and without him Kiryu wouldn't be the same. I do feel like Aizawa's Koi fits more on him in terms of meaning, but the idea that Nishiki has the Koi just because Kiryu has the dragon is pretty cool.

There's a common idiom in Chinese/Japanese known as 鯉躍龍門/鯉の滝登り, which descript how Koi must swim upstream through the riptide to get onto the Dragon's gate in order to became dragon. This is a reflection of Nishiki's ambitious within Tojo Clan and his relationship between Kiryu Kazuma. Also the Ryugyo(龍魚) tattoo on Kasuga Ichiban is a reference of Kiryu and Nishiki, since Ryugyo is a stage of Koi before they're truly becoming a real dragon.
And in addition, Kirin(麒麟) being the descent of Yinglong(応竜) which can be seeing as child prodigy in both ancient China/Japanese mythology. Kirin only appear in the presence of a benevolent leader (Dojima Daigo) and will became ferociously protective if a pure person is threatened by a malicious one. This fit the narrative how Mine Yoshitaka behave in Y3.

I believe that Nishiki's koi is actually the perfect tattoo for him. In Japanese legend the koi-carp that kept trying and never gave up eventually climbed a waterfall and the gods were so impressed by this little fish that they blessed him, and he became a dragon. Think, Magikarp becoming Gyarados for example? Obvious nod to the legend.
Now picture this, Kiryu is his blood brother, and has always been highly regarded for his strength eventually earning the nickname "Dragon" of Dojima. Nishiki looks up to Kiryu and wants to show the same strength, he wants to become somebody just like him, or at least as strong as him, whatever it takes.
Nishiki saw his brother becoming the dragon of the sky as they grew up and always felt like his efforts weren't enough and left him by the wayside. Therefore by choosing the koi to represent him I believe it's his way of saying "look at me brother, one day I will be a dragon too". Chasing that legend status.
Obviously that was ultimately his undoing, but the symbolism stands up better from a "legend" or "myth" stand-point, more so than just looking at the Koi itself and what it typically represents.
That's my thoughts on it anyway.

Congrats on becoming a youtube partner, you deserve it. I always wanted to see the meaning of these tattoos but never found a good source, so thank you for making it, it was really interesting. Right now i'm 20 hours in Infinite Wealth but just finished the Dondoko island tutorial. I was worried because LAD was amazing and maybe would overshadow IW but this game has tons of quality content, even for yakuza standards. Again thanks for the amazing content and keep going.

this is pretty off-topic but I really want to recommend the j-drama "Tiger and Dragon". It's on Netflix (at least where I'm at) and not a lot of people have talked about it on youtube. It's about a yakuza who tries to become a rakugo master. Probably one of my favourite shows ever.
