He admitted in Gaiden that a part of him did enjoy the glory of battle, the feeling of defeating a stronger enemy. When Watase told Kiryu in Yakuza 5 that he could tell he enjoys it, I honestly felt there was some truth there so I'm glad kiryu owned up to that feeling. That's character development
