    So, for 50, 60, 70+ years you could change the plug wire to your 2 stroke mopeds and other gear but now you can no longer do it but you need to change the entire coil? Yeah, this is not progress, economic nor ecological. Shame on you Stihl and I suspect other makers too. 🤬 Good video though.

      Yes. However in my experience, to much dielectric grease can have averse effects in cold temperatures. Not plug boots but like trailer, spreader and plow pigtails. I would assume the heat generated by the cylinder head would be enough to mitigate this issue there.

    Hey Chickanic, thanks for the good video. One thing that can make it easier is to thread your coil wire, without the spring terminal yet attached, through the boot (put some grease on the wire), then attach the spring terminal, then pull it back through (reverse it), being careful to seat the spring properly

    Cool video and very good advice!
    Only one thing: I find it easyer first pusging the wire through the boot, then fit the connector on the wire and finally pull the wire with the connector attached back through the boot until the connector fits. I also find it easyer to push the hole into the wire with a thin nail or an (german:Ahle) and then fit that hook from the connector. Before doing so i pierced my fingers several times... Not to bad but also no fun... 😁

    • @beenthere570
      @beenthere570 2 года назад +2

      I agree much easier put the wire through the boot first, then affix spring-connector, then PUT A PIECE OF JUST THE RIGHT SIZE SHRINK WRAP (that you have sleeved onto the plug wire beforehand) around the "straight part" of the spring-connector, then a little silicone grease, then back into the boot gently helping from the front. (If you are desperate and do not have shrink wrap, at least use a couple of turns of Scotch 88 -- leading out the back of the boot)

    I was close. I had to repair a pulled ignition wire on a Stihl BR600 a few weeks back. I didn't cut the wire, but I did cut the boot to make it easier to install the wire/coil back in. Will definitely use grease and stretch the boot next time.

    So it wasn't just me thinking the wire coil has become tighter, thanks! I've had them come several times a week too.
    And about the grease - I don't use grease for that, but a tiny squirt of WD40, it'll evaporate and let the coil sit tighter in the boot. You can try it some day, when you are out of grease.

  • @patricknesbit2334
    @patricknesbit2334 3 года назад +8

    Awesome 👍! I can use this info for sure! Thanks so much! I use Stihl and Husqvarna equipment and love to do as much as I can on my own. A few months back I had to change out the original spur sprocket on my 2012 455 rancher my dad purchased as bday present back in 2012 to help him on his property in the country. Thankfully my plug cable was not obnoxiously tight and popped off easily. I have also learned the trick of grabbing them in such a manner as to grab the wire inside the boot so as not to pull it all apart. I took some auto tech courses years ago and learned they will rip apart too if pulled incorrectly. A little finesse goes a long way in saving time and money.
    As to the gas issue my father taught me to always mix my own to avoid any issues and always mix per each tools specs. We also use non ethanol high octane. As you mention not all pre mixes are equal or designed for everything. You can easily burn up a small engine if the mix is not right. I learned this lesson the hard way when doing yardwork for my aunt using her weed trimmer and the gas someone had mixed incorrectly for her and was low on the oil side of things. I hard seized that engine in short order. So yup wrong mix gas can really mess you up quickly.

    I've spliced plug wires. Just cut them in a spot where it can't shock and use a thin copper wire (large gauge like -22) and stick it into one end of the wire and then push the two wire back together with the wire going into both ends of the wire. Tape or heat shrink if there's room. Ig it's in the plastic trough it doesn't need to have extra insulation.

      When I got my Sthil MS 170 ( because my Stihl MS441 is overkill for cutting small limbs/trees) the dealer where I bought my ms170 told me that if I bought the pre-mixed Stihl brand fuel it would extend my warranty by 2 years but for a 1 gallon jug it was $7.50. After they explained to me the benefits of the Sthil brand fuel, I decided not to get any I just mix my own and have not had any issues with the fuel itself, the issue that I have is a chainsaw doesn't seem to have enough power and when it gets hot it shuts off and won't start until it cools down. I've taken it back to the shop to have it looked at twice and was told there was nothing they could do. I insisted it could be a manufacturer defect or something of that nature and they told me that it was very unlikely.

    Love the videos! I watched this one and have a few hints: I work on tools (pneumatic) with a lot of pins and plastic housings and I found that a long punch or small phillips helps to line up misaligned housings and then just tap the pin in to push them out. Also screws in plastic go in easy if you turn backwards until they drop into the old factory cut track, this also limits worn and stripped out holes from overlapping cuts.

    Re. fuel quality , it's an easy test to put a small measured quantity e.g. a few cc or a 1/4 cup in a container alongside the same quantity of known good fuel in an identical container and do a timed evaporation test out in the sun .
    If dodgy fuel has lost it's light volatiles this test will help show it up , check after a few hours and compare levels .
    I was once given a Troy Bilt ride-on to fix that was backfiring and coughing and basically just wouldn't run properly at all , I ( finally ) did the above test and found that the fuel tank had been topped off with diesel fuel , it had enough petrol that it smelled not too bad but the evaporation test proved it .

    A quick tip for you and your audience: I have a Stihl string trimmer attachment, and the spark plug used to shock me in the elbow when I held the trimmer a certain way. I cleaned the boot with carburetor cleaner, then added several layers of tool dip/electrical liquid tape (both are made of butyl rubber dissolved into xylene), and no more shocks. The tool dip is sold at Lowe's as Plasti Dip. It's a LOT cheaper than buying a new ignition module.

    I’ve had them come off before I’ve never thought of trying to force the coil through the small hole on the boot the wire will barely fit on most of them I push the wire through the small hole and out where the spark plug goes then connect the wire like you did then just pull the wire back to where the loop goes and put it on the plug sometimes it’s easier to put the loop on the plug then slide the boot over the plug with the wire if the insulation on the spark plug wire is messed up it might be a safer way to do it without doing more damage also if the insulation is messed up after connecting the wire loop you can use some black light glue to reenforce the wire and insulation before sliding the boot over everything 👍

    When archaeologists dig up the bones of medieval long bow archers they find the arms/shoulders are bigger on one side of the body because they’ve built up such huge strength. Hundreds of years from now archaeologists will be able to identify chainsaw repair people’s bones.

    Nice Vid Brie, those boots are a royal pain. I do, however, remove the HT lead from bad coils and have installed them with epoxy instead of having to buy new, especially if the customer has a tight budget. Just an FYI. Keep the vids coming and stay away from those pesky nipples!!!

    Thanks for the anti-stupidity tip on the plug wire removal and the same kind of tip re: the canned gas rip-off. Do you recommend the use of non-ethanol gasoline ("pure gas") for small engine use, particularly with early 90s 4 stroke engines? Remember to change out the in-tank fuel line and filter in Stihl and other European chainsaws every few years, before they harden and crack, and refuse to start.

      You'd have to pull the plugs so you wouldn't have to keep hitting the compression release (in the case something weird happened).

    A helpful suggestion. After one gently removes the spark plug boot, one can lubricate it with dielectric grease. It won't affect the spark path, nor damage the rubber boot. It will make removing/inserting the boot going forward much easier.

    Good video. I got rid of all my Stihl saws and switched to that Swedish brand for saws and Echo for trimmers and blowers. My Stihl saws ran great AFTER you got it started. I figured out that Stihl was named that for a reason. While everyone else is cutting wood, you are "Stihl" trying to get yours started. I have a John Deere 21S line trimmer, that was made by Echo that I bought in 1994. I use it every week and it has run reliably all that time.

      Found this video after I bought the cheap replacement. Fixed the OEM. Got lucky with the cheap one. I bought the whole tuneup kit so I have extra parts now. I found sawdust and oil on my ignition contacts. May have been the problem. Not a fan of the MS250. I’ve used it for maybe 6 hours total using Stihl MotoMix only. I’m going to mix my own from now on.

      @@mcraven8 not a fan of the 250 either , mine would run lean some days and to rich the next , did all the pressure and the comp. test and all was good , even with a new carb. it still didn't run right so i got sick of tuning and bought the MS260 as i should have in the first place , it's a much better saw built with better quality parts
