- When people look at great wrestling shows in recent years, SmackDown in the year 2016 always comes up. After many years of having a merged roster and no real sense of divide between RAW and Smackdown, WWE decided to make exclusive rosters in the Summer of 2016. It's here where SmackDown called themselves the "Land of opportunity". This show was a place to see great matches and fresh new stars being given a chance to shine. Everyone always looks at the second half of 2016 as some of WWE's best work in years. In this video I take a look at just how good SmackDown really was in 2016.

this era was sooooo good and it's lowkey underrated. smackdown 2016-2017 hit different. i was 13-14 at the time, so this is my favorite period of wwe that i actually lived through

Honestly that era of Smackdown was the best of the 2010s and honestly was probably one of the best years of Smackdown ever. The competition was high and the very few big names gave opportunities to many mid carders and elevated them in the process. Such a great time.

Debut of AJ Styles, Return of Shane McMahon, Amazing PPVs, John Cena returning to SmackDown and his amazing rivalry with AJ, Return of the Drafts, Woman finally showing of their real talents. 🔥
2012 is the best year of the last decade
One of my favorite years of Wrestling in history, not only Smackdown but NXT was killing it just as much!! Can’t forget about the CWC as well! Finn Balor becoming first ever Universal champion , Survivor Series 5 v 5 and that amazing last episode of Smackdown 2016 capped it off! Man I miss this year so much..

To me, the moment that signified that SmackDown was going to be the better show during that time was where they opened the first show after the draft. You had Daniel Bryan and Shane McMahon in the middle of the ring surrounded by the superstars. It showed that the superstars were going to be given the attention they deserve. It showed unity between the superstars and the GMs. It was a stark contrast to the first episode of Raw that opened with was with Stephanie, at the height of her golden shovel era, and Mick Foley in the middle of the ring while the superstars were at the top of the ramp and Stephanie just had to bury Roman Reigns. The GMs were the only ones in the ring and the superstars having to be shoved at the top of the ramp showed that the GMs were gonna be the stars and that was a sign that Raw was going to be terrible and the superstars were going to be overshadowed.
I never thought of it like that. That’s completely true.

So sad. Look at Roman Reigns, now!! Now *HE* is sitting at the top of the food chain on Smackdown and he is now aligned with Paul Heyman and with his cousin, Jey Uso at his side. And he is a 2x Universal Champion. And Raw?! Well, that show has officially hit rock bottom and Drew McIntyre is on the verge of losing his WWE title to Bill "Oldberg" at Royal Rumble (2021). See what happens when you put Stephanie McMahon in charge of the red brand?!

Smackdown 2016 is honestly my favorite period of wrestling. I was always glued to the show. And the Survivor Series 2016 team match is in my top 10 favorite matches.

Smackdown is the reason WWE was doing so well in 2016. The Miz and Ziggler feud, Survivor Series, tag team division, Mojo, the introduction to the brand split women's champion everything. Honestly 2016-17 was the peak of smackdown

I MISS THIS. Dean Ambrose was my favorite WWE superstar and I tuned in as often as I could because he finally won the championship. And so many other things happened... new titles, SmackDown vs Raw revived, damn.

We can all agree that 2015 and 2016 were great years for entertainment and WWE in general. That year was the last great year for the wwe imo. 2017 and 2018 gave us some amazing moments too. I loved the fact that Dolph was one of the main faces of SD with Cena, Miz, Ambrose, Aj an others. Miz and Ziggler had an amazing rivalry and Iike you said they deserved to be in the main event. Fav match of the year was that triple threat match between Aj, Dolph and Corbin 🔥
SmackDown Live 2016 was the perfect time for me, 'cause I was just starting high school, and I was gonna have the best freshman year of my life!

This was when I started watching wrestling. Miz was a great IC Champion, AJ Styles was AMAZING as a heel WWE Champion, Becky and Alexa were good hell, HEATH SLATER was also good too! SmackDown in 2016 was AMAZING! Good times....
I'm just sad that I couldn't watch sd in 2016. I stopped watching wwe after wm32. It was so lackluster. I only looked at highlights of ppvs.

God I miss 2016 era SmackDown Live. In all fairness, I'm a bit nostalgia blinded since this is the time I really started getting into Professional Wrestling, but going back and watching it, there was always some great stuff. Also Ambrose V Styles was an incredibly underrated feud, they had some phenomenal matches and promos.

I loved this year overall. I thought RAW would've done better, but I was pleasantly surprised when SD was killing it! 2016 is my favorite year of the last decade.
You forgot to mention about Zigglers contract coming up and the indies getting hot at that point, lots of people though that ziggler could possibly leave the company which brought intrigue to the match because they were playing it up a little bit.

We got to see so many great matches, great storylines and especially great feuds. From Cena vs. Styles, Styles vs. Ambrose, Ziggler vs. Miz, etc. Everything was going great for SmackDown from July 2016 to WrestleMania 33. And then the Superstar Shake-up and it was all downhill from there which really infuriates me to this very day.*

SmackDown 2016 is great because it actually felt like a new era in WWE. Everyone felt like stars at the time worth carrying about. The only major flaw was the Carmella & Nikki Bella feud. Carmella never got a win and was pushed aside in favor of Nikki Bella vs. Natalya in order to build the latter up to dethrone Charlotte Flair.
2016 smackdown shows that the pg era can be great.

Looking back AJ really was and still is the man. I remember the insane pop he got at survivor series that year and honestly everywhere he went he was adored. Miz killed it as champion, and the Usos were cutting insane promos. Can’t forget about Breezangos small run either!!!

@@j86485 yup I even enjoyed the Ellsworth shit even though it got a little stale towards the end. That match at TLC was nuts and all the matches AJ styles had that year were up for match of the year. Crazy how much trust Vince put in him in that one year.
