Metallica playing The Outlaw Torn on March 28, 2009 in London, UK (O2 Arena). This was the first ever performance of this song in Europe without an orchestra. And I fuckin' love that song and the performance!
Enjoy, fuckers!

If someone told me 10 years ago that this is one of the best metallica songs i would say no way... but....now i just cant belive how good this song is..I think i never really gave this album a chance and rolled with the public opinion..
Phil Anselmo takes a real person to admit this. but you're absolutely right.
Phil Anselmo hey, it's not too late and now is the right time...
Joel Villares True bro.
Phil Anselmo - Most people didn't give the Load albums a chance because of the sudden change in style and people's quick judgements indeed. - Personally I just wasn't grabbed by most of the songs, save for a few like Fuel or something, and the ballads like Low Man's and Mama Said are beautiful (but they get a pass because of that). - But when I heard S&M it lifted the songs to another level and my appreciation grew. I still think the album-versions aren't AS good, but it made me "discover" other tracks like Prince Charming, Where The Wild Things Are and some others. - I have big views on these albums, but in short I think the good tracks were drowned by a bunch of mediocre tracks, besides also being mis-presented with just messy tracklists and poor physical album designs (which does matter, especially before the age of digital distribution). - The funniest thing after all these years, too, is that even though Fuel is like an overplayed cliché and almost a meme of a MetallicA-track, I've been obsessed with it more recently. There's so much more to these songs if you really listen. XD
Yeah, this is a gem & was an instant favorite of mine the moment I heard it.
U.N.R.E.A.L what a fuckin monumental song!!! I said it once and i'll say it again, Load&Reload songs are like fine wine, it gets better and tastier over time! Outlaw torn, thorns within, where the wild things are, fixxxer, bleeding me...
+anahowana I feel like you and I are going to be good friend ;)
+anahowana 100% agreed... leave those "metal heads" and non-musicians keep screaming shit about load and reload...
+anahowana Only the Outlaw Torn is such an unreal song.
+anahowana i was just telling something exactly that...as usual. its nice to see im not the only one. songs like this, the ones you mentioned and devils dance have been ignored and judged because of the general idiotic population. they have robbed themselves of the best era on Metallica imo
Bleeding me and Outlaw are the best songs from the Load era in my opinion
Load and Reload were albums way ahead of their time, once 2006 came around people really wanted to hear these songs
Agreed, Well said.....But TOO many were worried about them cutting their fuckn hari!....lol
namemedia1 ha in my opinion they looked good, even kirk
namemedia1 and i swear, this sounds just like the album version, they kick ass with these songs live!
That is because after Load and Reload, all we had was that steaming pile of garbage called St Anger
Chad Maier it sounds nothing like it....when you think about it...great song...crap performance
People moan about Load, Reload and St. Anger but played live these songs are fucking awesome. Fuck it Metallica are fucking awesome
Load and Reload sound brilliant in studio though. I'm sure most songs sound good live because you have the whole live experience.
deathrider7 - They rarely played any of the St. Anger songs properly live. - I love that album, but I love the album performance... Live they tend to rush and ruin the groove of it, besides them getting fatigued because of the intensity. The closest live thing they did pretty well for St. Ange is that live rehearsal performance they put to DVD with the album, but even that is nearing coverband levels. Unfortunately... It just doesn't have the same feel.
seriously an epic song. completely ignored. so fing dark,
Metallica ruled in the 90s, I think they made better music, is good the tugh sound but the melody in my opinión is more important, and they noticed and understand that during this period
I love the 80s music they made offcourse but I think the 90s was the pick of their music talent and creativity
It's so fucking nice to see James smiling on this vid and doing what he likes. A truly inspirational man...
I usually like the angry spitting James. But yeah he did a great job here.
The best part was the echo effect 2:46 I always wondered how he did that.
You know he had at least a light buzz here. He wasn't sober that's for sure.
Rob is cool but I wish they'd get Jason back! His backing vocals were way better!
I also thought Jason's bass playing was just fine and felt he brought way more energy to the band! Ever watch cunning stunts? He's great live!
actually rob sings better... jason just shouted. watch the making of death magnetic, there's a part where rob sing part of a song and is great. ALSO, what do you think now that he manages to do the chorus of moth into flame? jason would have just shouted.
I never saw the making of death magnetic and I only briefly checked out moth to the flame. I'll have to check them out, perhaps I misjudged?
Lautaro Maiarú Uhm jason didn't only shouted. Listen to a performance of the unforgiven from '92 or listen to a nothing else matters performance from '92. I'm sorry rob is a great bassplayer but he sings like shit. and i know metallica's new song moth into flame and the backing vocals are ok but still meh. But that's my opinion
I'd say Jason's best vocals were for Seek and Destroy and Creeping Death. And all the Load&ReLoad stuff of course.
I love Kirk and his work. But James' solos are the fucking best. Always so soulful and haunting, and melodic.
Retro Revelations If he only soloed more...
James and Kirk - disgusting rivalry! What a pity! I love the music! But they just don't get well together!
That's the fun part of being a rhythm guitarist, you solo out of fun bc it's not your job. So it's more creative.
i dont know why Load and Reload get such a bad rep, seriously some of my favorite songs in the Metallica catalogue this being one of my favorites ever
It's simply the fact that they are such a drastic change from the first 4 (or 5) Metallica records. People generally do not like change and the Loads were exactly that. I give Metallica credit for having the balls to change up their style. While the Loads were not perfect, I do agree that there are several gems on them.
you're very right. it might have been a little too drastic but thats kinda what I like about it since they werent afraid to change it up so much, they were doing what they wanted to do. And yeah like you said, they arent the best ever but i sure as hell have a fun time blastin them shits in my truck
I think that there's some great Heavy Rock songs on both of those albums and also some of James' best as well as most personal and heartfelt lyrics.
Dmitry Owens Yeah. He has a really great voice even when not singing in his gruff thrashy voice. Just listen to The Outlaw Torn or Unforgiven II.
radec918 For sure - he hit new vocal heights on the Load and Reload albums.
Have been a long time fan of Metallica and have always loved Load and ReLoad. Outlaw adn Bleeding me are dynamite IMO
I fucking love this song. Wish they played it live more often.
Check out the S&M version of this song, it’s amazing!🤘
I always find myself smiling when Kirk throws away slider after solo xD
+Bowbert I like how a guy has to come and grab before someone slips on it.
+Bowbert So glad I wasn't the only one who noticed that Haha He throws that thing with no fucks given!
raysdga Has to get rid of it at all costs, so he doesn't mess up the next part. lol
I always think if Cliff was alive, James' solo at the end to Outlaw Torn would have been a killer Cliff solo.
Load and reload wouldnt have happened with cliff in the band imo
Josephoid
cliff was heavy into classical music and music theory, part of learning theory you learn the blues scale, and im pretty sure cliff would probably have used that kind of stuff in metallica aswell. i think they might not cut their hair but probably would move on to different genres more often.
BatFan1 my god I wish we can see/heard that ‼️
@@jofusnufc841 how can you even say that with a straight face. Cliff was the most diverse as far as musical taste out of all of them.
@@jofusnufc841 There's no way you could possibly know that. People idolise dead rock stars and yeah they guy was good but you can't say what he would or wouldn't have done 13 years after his death
Oh I almost forgot, Jason does the best backing vocals, period.
LOL I read this as Rob went "heer me". Compared to when Jason would give a sweet "HEARR MEEEEEE" black metal growl
in Metallica Jason \m/ , in Van Halen Michael Anthony \m/
Lost my sanity in this performance... THIS IS FUCKiN' AWESOME...
Everyone goes on about how they hate Load/Reload yet, every time they play a song live off one of the albums everyone suddenly knows the lyrics and sings along. Why do people bandwagon and say they're shit albums? I'm proud to call them my favourite albums.
I wish I saw that live in my many live Metallica concerts...One of my top 5 favourite epic songs of all time from any band!
The fucking best song ever. long live Metallica.
Long live Metallica, indeed! I've been a fan since '89, almost 30 years.
One of the best tallica Songs ever !!
I love this performance so much, but Rob's vocals are shit...where is Jason when you need him?
That solo was just perfect
Load is my favourite Metallica Album. Drums and solo's epic on Outlaw...
I fucking love Load, it came out when I was 14 and people were kinda "confused" by how different it was but I loved it. The blues/rock/metal sound they created was simply awesome. Every track was great. They even throw in a country song ballad! (Mama Said). As much as I love the first 5 albums and the thrash metal (especially Puppets) I consider Bleeding Me among the top 5 MetallicA songs ever.
one of the best solos
Being a Metallica fan I accept all there albums and load was a great album and I think people just need to suck it up and give them a damn break
+david hall, give them a break are u kidding man
+david hall SUCK IT UP?!?!? Load and Reload are two amazingly written albums...If people would just listen to lyrics, holy crap dude, they are filled with meaning....both albums are quite epic...
deb21305 i agree!!!
david hall devils dance is way bad ass also!!!
Load and Reload had some great tunes.
Where is Jason I fucking miss him!
I was there. Amazing experience, first ever live gig for me too. I was about 17 at time!
What the hell im hearing with that backing vocals? oh fuck!! kirk and Robert cant sing fucking good note, damn!! why the hell Jason left the band??? come back Jason!!!!
Thank you for playing load and reload songs live amazing
My favorite song off of load and to finally hear it live and played Live Well! thank you!👍✌
The only time they play this song at the right tempo
J Stone S&M is at a good tempo
jaymzCS no sm is too fast
Austin Bramer - The hell are you talking about... S&M is slightly slower than this, so it can't be "too fast".
Fucktard. There's barely any difference. What's wrong with your brain?? - Must suffer from the same shit as Lars Ulrich.
one of my top 5 ..... amazing
Love this album especially this song when it came out. I never really cared for any one else’s opinion so have enjoyed it from day one. Just because it was different was what made it a good album. To me Metallica can’t seem to do a bad album. If you like it that’s all that matters end of. Cheers.
That bass line is killer
@MrFranztastico yeah man, i've been saying that metallica never sold out, but tried to expand their musical boundaries, they didn't care about the money or the fame, they wanted to see how it would work out playing a different style of music
Top 5 in my book and I’ve been a fan since day 1!
I always loved this song and when I heard and watched and heard it on S & M, I knew that it was an epic. Unfortunately, it seems to me that only James is performing with a feel. Too bad. It feels to me that James is trying so hard to keep with the rhythm. It's a shame. An awesome but such an underrated song.
amazing crowd!!! and amazing MetallicA
its underrated songs from underrated album. my opinion, this songs really hard to play on stage.. you have to give all of your emotions and be carefull with the stability playing and singing. So James Hatfield is the one of the best frontman ever. love you man.. really. !
The way Lars played that outro here is absolutely awesome, i love that build up. Everything played in the right place at the right time. Cymbals, crashes, the snare hits, everything. Amazing feel.
one of the worlds great live bands....
NO offense to rob... but i came here after watching Jason play on another video... Rob's style does not mesh well with metallica.. sorry!!
This is probably one of the best performances from Lars in the last couple years
Great underrated song! Load was great hard rock album!
Just look at James during the outro . He throws so much feeling into his playing whenever they do this song. It is really one of the best tunes that Metallica has ever written
best song of the (re)load era :) together with until it sleeps, bleeding, the memory remains, unforgiven II, where the wild things are and fixxxer :) all other songs are good too, but these few are above a 7/10 imo :D
a very good song, and a very good interpretation, METALLICA FOREVER!!!!1
5.54.. Just amazing xxx
Wow this is my way of loving metal music, more of the black album please.
I would wait my whole lifetime to see them once again.. because without their music there would be no life!
i don't have a fav song,I LIKE THEM ALL,I LOVE THEM ALL!!!
This and Bleeding Me are so freaking good. 2 of Kirk's better solos post Justice.
Honestly, I'd say this is his best overall, or at least tied with Blackened.
Unforgiven is surely up there with his best of all time
Also hate when people hate on load and reload, personally i think they are both as just as good as the others.hell i even like St.anger xD
James is so happy to Play this
I had never heard that song live before that night and I was stunned by the energy that came out of it... Like Bleeding me last year... Load/Reload are really underestimated IMO.
Bring back jason!!!!!
@MrMertgul He throws a guitar slide that he was using on the first part of the solo. It's those metal tubes guitar players put on their fingers for that delta blues sound.
This song wow
Song jams!!!!!!!
The song is amazing, but i died at this part hahaha 4:36
Best song off the Load album!!
I like them all... St.Anger its a really good album, lots of energy and music!! I think its great, not perfect, but great (miss the guitar solos)
Load fucking awesome live
Heh heh heh, I was there! It was awesome.
I didn't think James would be able to sing this song any more, but he does it really well. Never underestimate Metallica! :P Rob's backling vocals aren't nearly as good as Jason's were, though (listen to the S&M version).
I wish they’d play fixxxer. It, along with this, low mans lyric and bleeding me, are my favourite songs from Load/ReLoad
I've seen metallica live 5 times, and the sound of them live is just amazing, but instantly when it's recorded on a camera or something similar it becomes pretty weak! i don't understand it! how can that massive sound be reduced like that?!
james has such an amazing voice, when he sings that outlaw torn part, it sounds so clean not many people can sing that loud and clean
@Rraayyttee With all the moshing and the general vibe of a metal show (plus the lights on Hammett and considering how shiny it is), I can't see anyone getting upset over a tossed slide. Plus, if he had time to hurl it at his feet then he had time to lob it into the crowd.
But I was kinda being tongue-in-cheek as Metallica is my favorite band and Outlaw Torn is among my favorite songs. I only wish I could've seen them when Newsted was on bass.
@MrMertgul Its a slidder its used to slide up and down the neck of your guitar and it makes cool effects when you slide but with a wah its awsome , if you play i suggest getting one
A song lars can still play on drums and james can still sing perfectly. Their nxt album should be full of songs like this.
Great performance from the whole band!
The outlaw torn is for sure load's masterpiece.
See Kirk throw the slide down after the solo and it spiiiiins around?....See roadie pick up slide so band members don't step on and fall =Cool. Oh yea, and read the lyrics kids....you write meaningful shit like this if U don't already know it...Hammers UP ! Just FYI...
4:35 ... hehehe
SharpWalkers He sucks at back vocal :/
SharpWalkers 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
SharpWalkers SeE mE
THIS SONG IS AWESOME, LOVE it since day1
Great fuckin song, they should play more of this on tour!
James hits me when he sings "OUTLAW TOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORN!!" *----*
now it's only MR left in the setlists from Reload era. such a pity. a bunch of great songs were written back in 90-th. love from Russia.
This song, bleeding me, and mama said are criminally underrated af!!!
love this
Rob’s vocals on this song have come a long way from 2009.
Master of puppets, nothing else matters, enter sandman, fade to black, to live is to die were my favourite Metallica songs. But after I heard Load, outlaw torn, unforgiven 2, 2x4, ain't my bitch, bleeing me became my all time favourite Metallica songs.
Don't forget my friend of misery
I fuckin love this song
So true...This track shows it....This fucker rocks....and the lyrics are awesome.
WOW I'm extremely impressed by James' vocals, I had no idea he could still sing like that
AGHHH, Gran canción, gran letra, !!!!! , pone la piel de gallina !!!!
0:55 James looks like he's really enjoying playing this song. So why don't they play it more? It's a great song
I read somewhere that it's one of his favorite songs
I've made a mistake on believe that Metallica would never play a song from Load...
Thank God I was wrong!!!!
Amazing!!! I miss Jason Newsted
A very rare song to play live. One of my favorites ever .
Load & Re-Load are masterpieces, actually they are one album with two discs (the actual plan of Metallica was that too).
They need to sideline Sandman for awhile and mix in some Load. Absolutely
3rd time listening to this song LOVE IT !! Thank you again !!!
ROCK!!
you guys wouldn't want to hear Lars' backup vocals. dig up For Whom The Bell Tools with Jason on vocals video, and you'll see what I mean lol
Wow this was done almost picture perfect to the studio recording. Metallica's best live performance in my opinion
In this and in the Melbourne one James kinda screws up on the “smash the clock” part lol. Still one of my favorite songs though. James’ solo always gets me going. Load is one of their best albums.
great performance..except the backing vocals. they sucked, plus they kept saying the wrong words
He does the same with my friend of misery. He sings You STILL stood there screaming in both parts
i love this song its the best kirk RULES!!!!!! \,,/
one of the best and most underrated songs of metallica
Lars can't even play it right about the fill of this song, what the hell...
kiss my ass.
It's hard to remember, the drum beats are simple but there is a lot fills and small changes in the beats.
That kirk solo takes me to parallel universes every time... fkn love, this song and album
Load is a masterpiece...
Epic song :D
