    Lars is a phenomenal drummer. The people who say he isn't is the people who usually only like the drummers who double bass a thousand miles an hour through a song. Lars proved he can do that (Dyers Eve, for example), but the thing about Lars is he realiezes he doesn't need to do that in order to have a bad ass metal song. Lars knows the melody of the song, and when the song needs. Sixth highest selling artist of all time, nobody can say he sucks. One of my personal favorites.

    I must say I really do like Robert he has the knack and works well with the band. Thank god for Robert, and rest in peace to Cliff. Bob did him justice and credit is definitely due.

    The tone is SOOOOOOOOOOOO incredibly good. Like this sounds like it was straight off Puppets. Hopefully they kept these guitars for most of the show.

    I was at this conerrt i almost started to cry when i heard this song the ensuing head banging prevent that but still cliff is a bass legend and Robert does him justice with how he plays his works as was shown this night

    after all these years I still see the bass player as a complete outsider and his playing simple doesnt cut it for me. I miss Jason , that was METALLICA 100%.

    remember when this album came out when I was in highschool..guys were going crazy at how good it was. This tune is still one of the best instrumentals of all time.

    I don't know why there's so much hate on Rob , while I do admit nobody can replace Cliff , Robert is as close as it gets. He is an awesome bass player and his stage presence is absolutely amazing, really brings metallica back to life.

    I love how this song is so simple but yet so powerful and easily one of my favorite songs of all time and also one of my favorite songs to play; even though I play guitar I have to say that Cliff Burton has been a great influence on me and may he rest in peace.

    The first concert i ever saw was Metallica in Detroit rock city in 1986 when they were touring with Ozzy on the puppetts tour. I saw Cliff play this then and watching Robert play it now Cliff would be proud. There both amazing bass players and deserveded of everyones respect.

      Kirk's take on first solo proves your point. Regardless of his recent (by "recent" I mean last 5-6 years) drop in overall solo performance quality, he gave a solid on-point performance.

      They overdub intros like battery, blackened, AJFA where there is like 6 guitar parts but not the main songs themselves. There was no overdub on this song ad if you listen carefully you can hear the imperfections and lars shitty time-keeping.

    it seems like in the last couple years the dudes from Metallica have kind of rekindled their love of metal. They've been playing a lot of their older more "hardcore" songs that are tougher to play live, playing them better than they would've like 7-8 years ago (I can't even watch vids of them live from those years, bleh!), and they seem to be enjoying playing their old classics. This live version of Orion was a lot better than I expected. I hope they put out another album cuz they're back.

    Here Hear!!! This is the song that I have requested as a vigil when I die. My fam gets and understands. It's the song.... A soundtrack to many lives 8 minutes at a time.... no matter who is i the band. They needed to heal before playing it....how many years did it take for them to put it back into their show? ...
    Robert Trojillo captured me with ST. Super human. All about the music, little about the appearance.... Thank you for posting this, we already have something in common!

    Its a playback period!! His right hand goes to the top strings at 2:11 as well as his left hand to start the next riff. Just listen!! You hear the notes 14-14-14-14-14--14-14-15--15-15 on the 3rd string, while his right hand goes to the top 1st string and starts the next riff, i.e., 0--0-0-(0)---0-0-0-0-(2)--0-0-0-0-|--(3)--0-0-0-0-0--0-0-1--1-1-0. The parenthesis refers to the 2nd string..

    Rob's Bass solo from 1:44 to 2:12 is pre-recorded. If you do not believe me take a very careful look at 2:11 where Robert by mistake ends the riff and goes back to the top strings while a few more notes of the Bass solo were still remained to be played... If you take a look at other MetallicA live concerts performing this song, you would realize the same thing. Example is the Korea 2006 concert, where Robert is confused when to start the Bass solo at 1:18, he tries to start the solo earlier!!

    Kinda haunting.... I'm a bass player and Cliff was my very first hero. I later got into some other different styles of music and kinda lost some respect for Metallica as a whole, but never Cliff. Much respect for him. Scary to think of what he could have contributed if he was still with us. Mind blowing that a bassist wrote this, but then again Cliff wasn't the "average" bassist.

    @stevenslat The Rhythm line is usually louder then the lead on songs like this, Kirk does not come in until about 3 minutes in. And much of Orion depends on a good loud rhythm. when the lead comes in it stands out due to volume and guitar settings, James is not that much louder and i would imagine after the song the settings were adjusted to boost the Lead, it's a heavy metal trick used to push the mids of the song.

    @alexde I have already debunked this claim, and those who claimed it also agree with me now... The 10 last notes of the solo riff are not played by Rob at all. So, regardless of any delays that you are referring to, he finishes the solo 10 notes before it is supposed to be finished, and those notes are played by ghosts...

    He even realizes his mistake (not matching the playback) and at 2:12 he stops the riff he started earlier than it was supposed to be played, by sliding his left hand down to the middle of the guitar, and probably he restarts the riff afterwards, which is not shown by the cameras. Listen again to 2:11, we hear the notes 14-14-14-14-14--14-14-15--15-1­5 on the D-string,while his right hand goes to the E-string and his left hand also goes all the way back starting the next riff. Its a playback fans

    I love how there's a pause and Lars hands over the stage to Rob.
    Every time this is played, they are paying a homage to Cliff, and I dont think they could have a better bassist leading the tribute. Magnificent guys!
