I have to admit that years ago whem I first listened to Orions individual instrument tracks I thought the playing was kinda sloppy... I recently bought a bass (I play guitar), and wanted to learn some songs on bass and gave Orions a chance. boy SO little did I know, this song is hard to play properly... what seems to sound relatively easy on guitar, turns out that keeping up with the same riff but on bass is actually very fucking hard, the galoping is a four hit thing, not 3... so one of the fingers HAS to hit twice quite fast. Talk about hittin myself in the mouth with a brick. NEW FOUND respect, I was so ignorant.

This song is great. Too bad he didn’t play it in live concert, imagine he play it then improvise his bass solo and make it a little bit different from the studio version, that’ll be sick
@@toolbag-sy9ij Rob played it on Through The Never, near the end of the movie they’re just jamming Orion onstage with the roadie watching them by himself.
@@TheRealTurnedEvil I don't get why people think songs need lyrics to count as music. Some songs would be totally ruined if they had lyrics, Orion especially.
But if they want it louder, then they're probably looking for an isolated track. You can't have an instrument way too loud, otherwise it would never gel with the rest of the band. My mix brings the bass to the lead spectrum, which is usually filled with guitars, or drums or vocals, depending on which band we're talking about. Very rarely with basses, though. The only bands I can think of that feature basses in metal/rock that are also leading are Iron Maiden, Rush, Royal Blood (for obvious reasons), RHCP, Primus, The Who, etc... maybe I'm forgetting some bands, but it's very hard to find bass-laden ones.

I'm actually a guitarist myself but the fact that there is no one like Cliff these theys bug me so much i think i'm getting a bass guitar out of inspiration. Totally awesome.
George Macauley I finger pick a lot when playing guitar and I've played that way for years so bass kind of came naturally, already being very used to playing without a pick. Only thing that bugged me at first was the thick strings but I got used to it quickly. And I only picked up bass at first to learn this song so I was determined lol.
My first song I learned on bass was Fade to Black, and like you, it was because of Cliff's playing. I had taped FTB off the radio and the bass was way up on that particular version (don't know why, just got lucky). I wore out that tape 30 years ago.
Without a doubt, this is the best version of this song that I've ever heard... It would be amazing to hear every Metallica song that Cliff played on mixed like this. Thank you for this!
I always wished the bass in some of Metallica’s songs were mixed just a bit louder because some of Cliff’s basslines are just to awesome to be mixed low
Good job on this mix. You can hear the connection between Cliffs ingers and fret board so clearly. No wonder James has such a difficult time moving on after losing his best friend and perhaps on of his greatest mentors.
I think Mozart would have been completely blown away and would have loved this masterpiece if you had a true love for music Cliff was a pure genius God bless his soul I feel bad for Metallica cuz when they lost him that's when they lost it all nothing sounds as good as it was with they had Cliff with them
I think that I've listened to Orion probably about 400 times in my life since it was released back in the 80's. It was always just that long song on the tape/ album/ CD before Damage Inc. but now this does give it new life. Enough life to clear out some space for it on the organic hard drive.
To be fair this is how bass should be mixed. Right alongside the guitar. To hell with everyone that thinks it should be background noise. There’s a reason hip hop and Motown are so popular. All about the bass.

NEW FOUND respect, I was so ignorant.
what do you mean? it's X-xxx-X-xxx-X-x- repeat. arenyku saying it's not a triplet there at all?
i understand that feeling
It was meant to be sloppy
That's the fun part about the song in my opinion , it's just fun to play.

So true🤘
If it was an early Iron Maiden mix....lol

Love the galloping sound of his playing
Me too! I just wish it was mixed a tad bit louder, hehe
Who invented galloping sound?
Mike Mason dont forget iron maiden
WTF, i like reguetón, foos
nateeto I don't know who invented it, but the best performer known for using it is Steve Harris of Iron Maiden.
6:36 through 6:56 is jaw dropping he threw on the distortion and wah and did the solo verbatim on bass with kirk. I never realized that was cliff back in the day harmonizing on that part.
I am now convinced Cliff was some celestial being that showed up to make fun of a Kirk Hammet solo.
This part of the solo was played only by Cliff
Yep he double tracked and harmonized with himself
shit before this cut I had never noticed the little bass runs at the end

This song is great. Too bad he didn’t play it in live concert, imagine he play it then improvise his bass solo and make it a little bit different from the studio version, that’ll be sick

Is that a reference to Nathan Hale’s last words?
People: And the lyrics?
Me: Yes.
Every time my wife asks me why there aren't lyrics in this song I just tell her because cliffs bass speaks loud enough
@@TheRealTurnedEvil I don't get why people think songs need lyrics to count as music. Some songs would be totally ruined if they had lyrics, Orion especially.
Y la letra????
Yo: see letra jjaajaja
Only Cliff Burton and Chuck Norris know the lyrics to this song.
There are lyrics, if you can listen close enough, you hear the souls of legends crying out in metal.
Cliff'em All. Burton was the second coming of Lemmy. The world was robbed of Cliff's talent.
So those 4 thumbs down actually wanted Cliff's sound to be reduced in the mix ....you cant quiet the genius of cliffs legacy you misguided fools!
Yeah, totally! Cliff them all!!
Jason Stoutenger No son, just a fact that bass is not a lead instrument.
I'm 48, had all metallica demos and all material. even still have the hit parader issue with cliff interview.
I was skating in the park when my buddy rode up on his dirt bike a.d told me that cliff was dead..

6:38 to 6:57. I have always loved this song, but that solo, played in time, with the guitars, made the hair on my arms stand up. Damn....

Amen brother! One of the best best bass players in METAL!!!!!
André De Lemos metallica never be the same without cliff.
Such a masterpiece. As a guitar player first I only picked up a bass too because of cliffs playing. First song I learned on bass was Orion.
A masterpiece indeed!
I really find it difficult to believe that Orion was the first song you learned to play on the bass guitar.
George Macauley was one of the first songs I learned to play also.

Potusek fuck yeah bro
Same thing with the entire and justice for all album!!
Needs to be at 11.
I always wished the bass in some of Metallica’s songs were mixed just a bit louder because some of Cliff’s basslines are just to awesome to be mixed low
Lars didn't want to be outshined
Wich he got either way
Good job on this mix. You can hear the connection between Cliffs ingers and fret board so clearly. No wonder James has such a difficult time moving on after losing his best friend and perhaps on of his greatest mentors.
RIP Cliff Burton. Your unique contribution to music has immortalised you. Thank you!
Jesus cliff could gallop his fingers better than a mustang! Much love to cliff and the creator of this killer sound mix.
On those gallops, Cliff used only two fingers.
