Metallica - The Call Of Ktulu (enhanced bass)

- Опубликовано: 7 фев 2025
- Cliff's bass is enhanced using Adobe Audition's "Center Channel Extractor". As a side effect, kick drum and snare are louder too.
Listen through headphones (and loud!) for the best experience.
The 12 people who disliked the video wanted te bass to be even higher.
Nah they wanted the bass to be isolated completely... Or maybe they are just from Australia.
@@thewisebread3653 LMAO!
...or maybe they were driven insane by Cthulhu himself...😏
They wanted Cliff to turn into a bass😂😂😂
or lars's alts
I'm glad this song wasn't on "...And justice For All". It would have been a great loss to mute the bass.
If this song was played by newsted it wouldn't be the same as the way cliff did it because cliff had all the wah and distortion on his bass unlike jason
i doubt if lars had the balls to mute cliff :D
@@goude264 Lars: mutes bass James and kirk leave the studio cliff : ktulu get this ass rag and kill him
They had never dare to mute Cliff's bass
The bass was still pretty quiet on their early albums as well though, only from the black album onwards did it get proper treatment.
Cliffs wah sounds like some demon trying to claw its way out of hell
I actually picture Cthulhu himself emerging from his underground city. Check out Lovecraft's "Call of Cthulhu" horror story if you haven't already :) www.hplovecraft.com/writings/texts/fiction/cc.aspx
I like the "woOoOoOoh"s too.
That was the idea and he pulled it off! This young man was a genius.
Alex Lovato fun fact the demo of this song was called freazing over hell or something like that
when hell freezes over*
Cliffs bass sounds like a tortured panther in this. The brightest flame burns the quickest. Jesus Christ..
Black Sabbath that's a new one hahaha
Was the reference to another Metallica song intentional?
Георгий Киреев which song?
6:10 Cthulu himself awakens. 8:20 He has destroyed all sentient life and completed his unholy mission.
lol
dude that gave me chills
Best musician in the band hands down. RIP the best metal bassist ever
Cliff forever!
@@maksphoto78 And forever an inspiration to every metal bassist!
🤘🏻😎🤘🏻⚡️⚡️
Not to mention composer.
Not only that but the songs just go so boring after he was gone. Both lyrically and musically. He was the genius in Metallica.
@@TraydonDunkheel boring or recycled?
What a fucking amazing bassist. RIP Cliff
I sure do miss him. Been great in and justice for all
I know. He died after the master of puppets albu.
He would've been great in and justice for all
@@therealdirtydan6776 I don't think lars could mute his bass
The scream of the bass here makes me shiver
One day we will get the isolated bass for this. One day.
There's a live version from 84 where it's very loud, louder than this
@@alexandercurtis4427Lyceum? He really summons Ktulu/Cthulu in that one
3 years later We get pretty close thanks to apocalypticas cover featuring the first part of the isolated bass stem
Proof that Cliff was Metallica; the band buried him in the mix because he outshined them all.
yep pretty much
Bach, Beethoven, and Burton
Kinda their thing, if you can upstage them they get rid of you or mute you
It's why they gave him the shortest straw😢
RIP Cliff burton. Damn that bass in this song. simply genius
I loved it. Cliff was a genius on the bass...This is the best Metallica instrumental ever!
There a few masterpieces in rock. This is included!
Rush/xanadu.,Villa Strangiato and there are a lot more.
Good idea for an instrumental montage,Dude!
Cool, although I'm more of "Orion" being arguably the best fruit of his bass learning alongside his best and last teacher (whom Cliff later outgrown) in Steve Doherty.
"The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far. The sciences, each straining in its own direction, have hitherto harmed us little; but some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the deadly light into the peace and safety of a new dark age."
It's pure gold

Holy shit. Cliff's wah was incredible in this song. Those parts really give the song that much more character. They really sound like some unimaginable monster!
- I didn't realize it was you, Maksim. What's up.
Glad to hear from you again, thanks for the comment. Cliff does some really crazy stuff on this track if you listen carefully.
maksphoto78 Fucking Cliff man. Listen to Fight Fire With Fire bass only. Some crazy sounds coming from Cliffs Rick in that fucking song too.

It's like there was something hidden from view that only the truly determined or positively mad could find, in true Lovecraftian fashion
Bass is so cool its lkterally lovecraftian
I thought this song had no lyrics, but listening to it now I realized that the bass is the voice of Ktulu himself.
Yes! Cthulhu's roar.
And we finally heard Cliff clear. And God said that it was good. Thank you for this.
How the hell do you even write a bass line like this? Cliff!
He did a lot of improvising and soloing using this technique. Check out this live footage of Anesthesia: ruclips.net/video/2kdUJ5NAnTc/видео.html
maksphoto78 I know, I've seen him improvise a lot. Never saw that one though, thanks for that. He solos like John Bonham solos on drums. Just takes the base idea and just plays around with it differently everytime.
It’s scary to think how much of a genus he was back then when they first came out this song is terrifyingly insane
best bass line ever written.
Listen through headphones for the best sound.
+maksphoto78 Or, you know, you could just get some good speakers for your PC... Also, just like with speakers, there are a vast array of headphones out there... Some are cheap and sound like shit, others are expensive and sound great. Saying "Listen through headphones for best sound" is only true if one has good headphones. Just saying...
The Ranter While it's always good to have good speakers, listening this track through headphones will allow you to hear the bass guitar better. It's just something I've learned from experience.
That's why I have speakers that have a subwoofer... :oP
+The Ranter I also have speakers with a subwoofer. And listening to this through (good) headphones still offers a closer bass guitar experience.
Kinda music goes straight into your Head! =)
I love when the bass runs the song
God they should Remaster this song.. All the effects on the bass and instrumental itself got me kicked right in my ass!
김준수 I think Metallica confirmed they were releasing remastered versions of KEA and RTL this year.
Remastering is increasing the volume of the album and improving the sonic quality so Remastering is releasing the original album in a more polished and louder way the sound levels of all instruments stay as they are originally recorded Metallica should Remix the album in order for us to hear Cliff's bass as we do here but since the album was recorded on analog tape I doubt they will ever do it
I believe Metallica do have all the master tapes for RTL, KEA not so sure. Can't find any isolated KEA tracks from Guitar Hero
+Eric Dixon Holy shit! Gimmeeee
they have all the analog tapes excapt the No Life 'till Leather demo tape:D Mustaine has its master recordings:D. After forming their own record label Blackened Recordings, they claimed the ownership of all their videos and master recordings so they can remix the whole back cataloge if they want but since its so much work and they are recording a new album now and considering they will do a world tour after that, we won't see it happening in the near future.
After 40 years this music still literally brings tears to my eyes.
Gojira: WooOoOOooooOO
Cliff: BWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH
😂😂🤣🤣
awesome wah cliff was a master wah player
The best instrumental metal song ever...
Ugh hard to say cause Orion too is up there
34 years ago today. Sept 27, 1986. RIP, Cliff and thank you.
Only Cliff could make his bass moan in pleasure
Pleasure? His bass was shapeshifting!
It sounds great..what a good idea Cliff´s bass is one of the best parts of early Metallica!!
Thanks for sharing...=)
So many parts may not be heard on common listening...!
By the way , no doubt that his energy was contagious..for me, this and MOP drumming is the best of Lars , too...he was more sutil and had more quality playing, now he´s more like playing heavy punk style ; sorry but this is how I feel it..
Love him though...=)
such a shame they have to ´´enhance´´ the bass, just imagine how epic the original release would have been if it was like this from the start!
it was like this on vynil they fucked it up when they moved it to cd
Eric Renner no way, damn those fucks.I I've always heard the same on cassette or cd. I figured they couldn't do that to those basslines..I need to find these vinyls
Alcino Acosta it was the way cluff wanted it and it would have sounded much better on wax and cassette.
Eric Renner WAIT, WAHT?
Cliff IS epic.
I wanted to write "*was" but then i saw who wrote this comment so I guess you might be right
berni2905 hahahaa You know it
And untouchable! 🤘🏻😎🤘🏻⚡️⚡️
The best version on RUclips. I can definitely hear Cliffs's bass! Nicely done.
Every fucking member of the band did and amazing job on this song! This is my favorite metallica song.
This is Cliff’s masterpiece, imo
@berenicea.n.barkovitch7406 both are great
This is.... WAY BETTER!!! Thanks!
if you want to take the snare and kick down sample each and use them as noise reduction profiles. Set the center channel extractor to remove all the side imaging, .then run the NR over the track. You should end up with pretty much just the bass. Then paste that back over the original unaltered track TA DAH and you've turned Cliff up.
Problem is, there are no isolated tracks for this instrumental, so no way to get just the drums. However, you could exclude the lowest frequencies (20-60Hz) in the Center Channel Extractor, because that's where the kick is, but it's still below the bass.
He was the master! I feel it…the master of em and us…I can imagine cliff going to the them and says:this is called THE CALL OF KTULU in their shocked faces ❤
Sometimes we can fix a wrong one the world and this is one of those days.
Thank you, sir
I love the lyrics
yes.
They speak through the bass: "Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn"
Cliff's wah sounds like the roars of a creature emerging from a long period of deep sleep, like Cthulhu by itself. This whole song is awesome asf, but the bass is definitely the best part of it.
RAWR
This really makes you realize that Cliff was playing the part of Ktulu in this song
Yes, the rawr!
Awesome Bass, never really listened the bass lines properly, It's astonishing
That's how should be played a bass. Cliff ❤️
This is how the bass should be mixed.
Great!
I only wish the mastered version truly unleashed cliffs screams. It was godly and underwhelmed
I'm not even the biggest fan of Metallica but this is hands down my favorite bass performance.
listened to this song while read hp lovecrafts The Call of cthulhu
I love the flanging guitar sound though out the song
That was unfortunately the result of processing trying to bring the "center channel" out.
Distortion sounds like it’s underwater in a tin can, and I fucking love it
thanks man this is waay better than the first one..much cleaner almost perfect..drums are not that much of a problem.. rock on
to those who are wondering the wah sound is from the morley power wah fuzz (i believe)
Best song ever
jfc this is great, I can definitely hear the difference in whatever compression to ;) (dd)
This is beautiful!
In this song wasn't lead guitar...
It was mothafukin leading bass🤘🤘
HELL YES!! 💪🏻🤘🏻😎🤘🏻⚡️⚡️
that wah gives me goosebumps lmao
This is a place I come to relax
This is great.
Cthulhus underwater scream
thank You for this

Flanger? I hear a wah, distortion and reverb
Take a close listen to the beginning, you’ll hear the whir of the flange. Cliff prolly placed it in the effects loop of his amp, which is why it’s in a different place sonically than the distortion, wah and compression. The reverb was added in the production.
You can hear the flanger in the second bend in the section after the escalation. You can also hear at other points in the song, but it's hard to hear if he's even playing anything then
Ollie Heads
He used a Big Muff Fuzz and a Ibanez Tube Screamer 808 as his Distortion.
Ollie Heads it sound like a flanger
Most favorite shit right here. Wish I could've seen it live in Munich. fucking love it, keep rocking on brothers and sisters across the world 🤘🤙
Cliffy your bass shakes my house and will until the day I meet you up there in the heavens🤘
Super comment! Thanks for checking my bass mixes
For sure. Suggestion song by chance is Creeping Death. If you could just amp up the air density like you did here that would be so great. Thanks for the input!!

Used to wannabe a lead guitarist until I heard Cliff Burton then I was animated on getting a BASS guitar...ahhhhhhhhh
this is how should have been recorded

Be the greatest alarm sound to wake up too
So good!!! Fark me what character behind the bass!!!
Indeed!
I like the part where he goes ‘WAH’
That bass tho
6:21 a World War II fighter plane
Cliff furthered the way for bass players to stand out, but he moved the bar incredibly high. Justin in Tool is up there...Les obviously...John Paul Jones is super solid, although Ramble On he leads the way, CRAP, I just opened a rabbit hole for myself...and I have stuff to do today.
Justin chancellor, les claypool, and cliff burton will go down in history as the worlds greatest bassists
Can't forget Geezer Butler
Dude, do you think you can enhance Cliff's bass on Trapped Under Ice?! Please and thank you!!
There’s stems for that song :) idk if it’s on RUclips though but it’s online
See kirk? This is how to use wah and make it sound great
He over uses it, he doesnt sound awful

Why did they mix it like this the whole point is to have lead played by the bass not to bury it deep down
Jason makes no attempt to play this during the symphony lol.
Because its a fekin impossibru bassline.. :D
I’m no musician but hearing this it’s sad they did such a disservice to their own song. I can start to appreciate Cliff’s mastery. Also can now hear this song is not an instrumental at all!!!
Play it at .75 speed. EPIC!
Hallowed be Ktúlu
I need this in 8d audio
hey maksphoto78 could you pleeeeeasse enchance the thing that should not be.. this is the link of a bass only version so can you just mix it up so that its slightly louder than guitars..or just enough to hear his bass overdrive properly..i would be eternally grateful

Done: Metallica - The Thing That Should Not Be (bass enhanced)
maksphoto78 thanx :DD
"Great Metal"
God Cliff was 20x the musician any of his mates were.
yeah and the others were reeally good, that says alot
Still one doubt..if Kirk used lots of wah-as nowadays haha- it is difficult to tell out which sounds was his, or Cliff´s , in the high spectrum...=(
There´s a kind o phasing in Cliff´s I guess...
Please anyone share an opinion!
Proper mixing of a metal band leaves the entire bass completely in the middle so as a term for a wah it would only amplify where the bass was out leaving out kirks frequencies almost completely.
You should seperate a bass using wah which is CLIFFORD LEE FUCKI BURTON and a lead using wah Kirk Wahmet
flavy1000 he used wah, bassballs envelope filterand other filters,chorus/flange
Can you post a bass and drum verirsion? That would be great ;)
Unfortunately, isolated master tracks for this song are not available, so I can't do a "certain instruments only" mix. However, I will try to produce a "center channel" only mix, which is where the bass and most of drums are. But it will not sound pretty.
I think all Metallica fans should campaign for the band to release master tracks for Ktulu :)
Ok, I made a "bass and drums" version by extracting as much of the "center channel" as possible. ruclips.net/video/iFrMm7Kulwk/видео.html
+Rolleharris9 A new version is here, sounding much better: ruclips.net/video/4iESIZX29tg/видео.html

We need more metal bands with Lead Bassist like Cliff, James and Kirk were decent support guitarist and Lars well... fire him and get a new drummer, maybe the dudes from Gojira, Mastodon or Meshuggah can lend them their drummer.
