It's ironic to me that the two best Metallica albums without Cliff Burton, ...AND JUSTICE FOR ALL and DEATH MAGNETIC, both have mixing issues. Everyone knows the "There's no bass on ...AND JUSTICE FOR ALL! " thing and DEATH MAGNETIC has a distorted quality in parts, mainly during some of the snare drum hits. The funniest thing, at least to me, is that not only do I but pretty much everyone else let's it slide because those albums kick ass.
I would say you could barely hear bass in Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets. They're not as bad in terms of mixing issues as AJFA is though. I think Kill Em All has almost perfect mixing when it comes to mixing in bass. And Cliffs tone was pretty overdriven on RTL and MOP is that what you mean by distorted?
Now that I think of it I never know the bass line for mop songs... I like some of the cool arts in ride the lightning, like cliffs part in the call of ktulu. It's a good use of that style to me
They wanted Death Magnetic to be as loud as possible, so they used compressors excessively, until there were no dynamics left. Still, they raised the volume more than the audio could handle and thus the sound is digitally distorted at some parts. It's such a rookie mistake I'm really surprised it was made by expert sound engineers. Oh, and Death Magnetic is mostly forgettable. Especially the instrumental...
