While watching this video just now I had a random memory of when I was a teenager. (I'm 50 years old now, as of June first.) I had applied for a job at Taco Bell and I went in to my job interview with my hair looking much the same as Cliffs hair, and my jean jacket covered in Metallica patches. And on the front chest of the jacket the patch "METALLICA ALCAHOLICA" My interviewer had commented on my super long hair, and I saw him looking at that patch on the front of my jacket too. Hmmm, they never did call me back, lol. Well, their loss as I've always been one of the hardest working most reliable employees at any job I've ever worked. But, my gain as fortunately can say now that I've never worked at Taco Bell! Ha... Or any fast food chain for that matter. Phew, that was a close one, almost did. I have to thank Metallica for helping me avoid that fate ha ha. Thank you!

Was wondering if anybody else caught that. To his defence he seems like he might have had a touch of alcohol in his system AND he beasted it out and down picked the entire thrashy riff before that where as Kirk alternate picked the descending scale part of the riff.
James seems kinda drunk in this video, but he was barely 20 years old here, so that seems a bit suspicious. Maybe some bars in Chicago have a drinking age of 18. That's the age limit that we have at pubs in Sweden.
Nick Kechris That's because as u get older u aren't as good and he probably could barely play it then because it's one if Dave's kick ass Solo's don't get me wrong Kirk is fucking awesome but to me Dave's a better guitar player
Good lesson here for young bands. No matter what the style of music, how tight you are, or how talented the players are, this sounds obvious but you gotta have the songs. Countless similar bands faded away but Metallica became one of the biggest bands in the world because they had the songs. I've seen so many bands in clubs who were great except for that one very vital ingredient, and after the show I couldn't remember a single chorus.
That plus they had a creed basically. Don't sell out, hate the man, and death to false metal. Us young guys were vulnerable to those messages, and they played us well. At 57 now, i still never forgive them (although i understand why..i'm not naive) for selling out.. putting out a music video from "And Justice".

Young james is a look alike to one of my friends named james
James and Kirk Looked So Strong and Brave in The 80s 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
1983:
James: SEARCHING, EVERYBODY!
Crowd: .......
2017:
James: SEARCHING, EVERYBODY!
Crowd: SEEEEEEK AAAAAAND DEEEEESTROY!!!!!!!!
James: Searching!
Jason: Arrrrgh!
FUCKING FACTS. I went to their concert last night and everybody was screaming during seek and destroy
2018 is more like:
James: SEACHING, YEAHYEAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!

Hahaha! That's true bro!
I was at this show. It was at the metro in chicago. A guy grabbed kirk's guitar during the show and got his ass kicked by the stage crew.
haha hooligans
Rite on man that's a cool story 👍
Donald Suva That’s on the Cliff ‘Em All video, isn’t it?😂
Ахуеть!!!!!! Ты был там! И видел все это в живую!!!!!!
Good times.
Thank you!
Fun fact kirk worked at McDonald's, I think it was for funding a Marshall.
I've been in the work force for 40 years now. I can honestly say that the long hair, headbanger guys are the hardest working.
Dishlickers of the world unite!
@@charliec5653 I worked with a guy like that, always got everything done and was just a great guy
Hatfield is an underrated singer because a lot singers try to sing super high and do difficult shit on the album and then play live and can’t live up to how they sound on the album. He Always sang in a way that he could sing live and sound good. It’s realistic to maintain…
Jesus, James looks 12 almost lol
He was 20 back then. :P
ComedyBoy475 lol to me he looks like 17-18
ComedyBoy475 yeah
Will Weems He was 19 or 20. He was born in 1963.
The same with Kirk 😂
I like to think that Cliff Burton is the Jimi Hendrix of metal. Both died to young but at least they lived long enough to leave behind a legacy.
Cliff is the Hendrix of metal bass. In my opinion Randy Rhoads is the Hendrix of metal guitar.
I had a dream I died and was in Heaven.I was talking to Jimi Hendrix when I saw Buckethead.I asked Jimi if that was Big B. He replied. That Is God.He just wishes he was Buckethead. Before you dicksuckers get your panties in a wad.Its just a joke.Buckethead Bless.
cliff died on my birthday
True
lol
Super picture quality for being early 80's!!
ghsghsuidghuisd way better then what they use to record ufos
Blows your mind when you stop to think that this guitar that James is playing is the same guitar that he used to record most of 72 Seasons' songs.
4:22 rare sighting of james alternate picking
Ssshhhhhh delete your comment
BLASPHEMY
Was wondering if anybody else caught that. To his defence he seems like he might have had a touch of alcohol in his system AND he beasted it out and down picked the entire thrashy riff before that where as Kirk alternate picked the descending scale part of the riff.
Impossible
James seems kinda drunk in this video, but he was barely 20 years old here, so that seems a bit suspicious.
Maybe some bars in Chicago have a drinking age of 18.
That's the age limit that we have at pubs in Sweden.
You could hear every note from Kirk's solo so clear smth that now days u can't
Nick Kechris because now he uses his fucking whaw whaw to much
I think it might be the active pickups but idk
Lars playing at normal speed also helps!
He’s getting old lol
Nick Kechris That's because as u get older u aren't as good and he probably could barely play it then because it's one if Dave's kick ass Solo's don't get me wrong Kirk is fucking awesome but to me Dave's a better guitar player
6:57 James epic slide Hetfield
They call me slide Hetfield
Genius drunk move there
Seems like yesterday. Freakin unreal how fast time has gone. Wasn’t expecting to make it this far. Incredibly special.
Miss you Cliff!
who’s here to watch the old metallica rock during quarantine??
WorldGamers 101 me.
Here to seek and destroy this fucking virus, from home of course.
me of course
Rock?
@@mikolaj1664 he said rock as an action not as a thing
Somewhere back then an angry dave mustaine has formed megadeth
Have to wonder if he was pissed at Lars more than the others, I mean he did pull in a fucking badass drummer lol
And kicked some asses
Who ?
Mustaine was completley fucked over by james h just like every member of metallica
@@antonioramonconcepcionvida4489 Dave Mustaine?

Daaaaammmnnnn...look at those baby faces ❤ I was 8 when this album came out. It was a staple in our household🎉😊
Well duh.
@@Mr1Tanker "never sell out"?
I would like to enter the Black album into evidence
People are still mad about Metallica “selling out?” 😆
@@thomashamilton9658 You say "well duh" but all the bands who write horrible songs but just can't figure out why they aren't playing stadiums instead of bars with ten people still don't seem to get it.
Who knew the waiter could play guitar like that!!
Shawn Martin james actually worked at a sticker factory before getting signed
🤣🤗🤣🤣🤣👍👍🍺🍺
He looks like Slash's lesser known brother
Yeah I ordered a martini and he never came back with my drink, I went to go find out what had happened, there he was playing in a band.
@@rileyk.1336 and plays abit like him.
I love Metallica, but James has always reminded me of the lion from the wizard of oz.
Thats what my mom is still sayin'
😂
bruh
Looks like a blonde Josh brolin too
😂
It's just crazy how long their career has been...they're unbelievably dedicated.
The birth of thrash metal. Who'd have thought and still jamming 37 yrs later.
These dudes and Exodus, all along with the tons of those bay area bands who never went anywhere
@@ionehkontehdiabo7627 yup exodus.
Birth of a full thrash album in the states thrash was already going on with venom and Exciter and Slayer was 5 months later
@@clydewhite2824 No ones done it better than Metallica therefore the birth of thrash lays squarely at their feet. Including far less talented bands venom and exodus. Lol
I will give Metallica credit for doing the first long play thrash album but thrash was already here just wasn't labeled yet
everyone thought they were just a local band. but little did they know is that they would be the most epic metal band ever!
Austin Henke you have the same first name as me
WRONG
Some of them could probably tell that they were going to be big.
A lot of upcoming superbands have a very special presence when they are on-stage.
Not in Chicago they didn't.
NoCal maybe.
Black Sabbath is the One not Metallica

That distortion sounds amazing man
His voice ❤🎉
First time I saw them in 83, it was Cliffs 5th of 6th gig with them. I saw them open up for Raven and headline with Armored Saint opening. 1983 was an epic year for Bay Area thrash.
I was there next to you. Do you remember me?
James, could he have predicted he'd be a million-dollar rockstar in those years?
Lars already was, so James pretty much never had to worry about money. Yet they lived like they were poor, eating meat without bread.
MrParkerman6 wait, Lars came from a wealthy family?
ladistar Google his father, they moved from Denmark to the US because of hos career
ME
Lars ended up worth $300million
Wow this kids have talent, I’m pretty sure they’re gonna become one of the greatest metal bands if not the best in history
Looks like they have a future based off this

Where dd 46 come from ?
The good ole days of metal. Classic, solid and they sound great.
After hearing all those awesome versions from 1985-1999, it’s refreshing to hear this version again and feel their raw energy in the early days!
Back when Lars actually played the song instead of adding a random fill every other bar
Yep. His playing was on point for the entire show.
Just a year prior to this, Lars' drum's would fall over, so James says anyways! 😬
It's his band, he can do whatever he wants.
@@normanchamings8156 no it's not, james and Lars founded the band.

He was actually only 19 here
